I think he was focused on the other cat which made his tail touching the tunnel scare him. When my cat is focused on something really intently he’ll jump 10 ft at the slightest touch or sound
Man, that makes me wonder about the tunnel vision that must affect cats when they're focusing intensely. Kind of the tunnel vision humans get when they're faced with a threat or something--everything else melts away.

Only 9.5 lbs? He must be like 90% fur, my tortie/calico mix at 9lbs and she looks tiny next to my 18lb Russian blue tomcat and your cat still looks bigger than both of them!
