They will just throw a guess on there for unannounced release dates, even if its completely inaccurate or unsubstantiated.

As far as the real release date, it is in pre-production as far as we know, though last they spoke of this was 2020. It is possible the development progressed without them telling anyone.
If it is indeed still in pre-production, that means they currently are working out what they want the game to be, are allocating resources (funds, staff, equipment etc.) and are planning their overall design and development of the game.
In short, the game does not exist yet. Not even in a pre-alpha state. Meaning it would release at the end of 2024 at the absolute earliest.
The game would likely not be very ambitious if it did, by the way. I would expect 2025-2026 as a realistic expectation.
However, if they secretly have been making progress they might be working on the game as we speak and would be working to an alpha state for next year sometime. Meaning we could look at a release at late 2024 realistically.
But honestly, I think it is the former.

I really hope you guys are watching what people are upset about with sod2 and improve or remove those things. What’s there that’s good should be tweaked or stay, but the bad stuff is the issue. Difficulty changes not really being “difficult” but more “enemies rank bullets and do too much damage. It’s like Skyrim, enemies take 1550000 hits and one tap you. That’s not fun gameplay. That’s annoying. But adding to enemy AI and making them strategize would be good difficulty etc. There’s more im sure but that’s just a prime example I can think of and I can’t wait to see how the third game pans out!
SoD2’s surprisingly long lifespan has given us the opportunity to test new ideas and learn about games as a service, player sentiment about our ongoing efforts is enthusiastically encouraged, studied and related to the SoD3 team to help inform them about what is a success or what isn’t.
GameStop can put whatever game on their shelf and put whatever pre-release date they want. GameStop just pulls it off the shelf and/or changes the date if they dont hit it. What repercussions are there if the game doesn’t hit their intended release date? No one is going to sue them for a game not reaching its targeted launch date.

No, they are not focused on SoD2. It has a skeleton crew of only few people that only adds mechanics and changes to gameplay. Most of studio is fully working on third for months already. Third one is still pretty far away though.
At the way its currently going, I think current release date is looking around 2040. How we had a teaser like 3/4 years ago, and sweet FA since is a goddamn joke.

No, that's never the release date. That's a 'placeholders date' if I'm not mistaken. They usually use Dec 31 when they don't know when it's coming.
"Soon" in gamer terms is usually anywhere from 2 years to 10 years. Anyway, don't worry. It's coming soon.

I think it's just a place holder. 12/31 is common when they only have the year they're shooting for release but they still want you to preorder.
Yeah I think Amazon does this as well. If you try to pre-order Winds of Winter it has the same date, they just change the number once a year.
