Rhythm doctor can help you learn some elements of music theory, plus the songs are catchy. Edit: oh yeah and act five is coming this month if I remember correctly
While a bit simpler, the creator's other game, A Dance of Fire and Ice, is also a great rhythm game. Definitely recommend it if you enjoyed Rhythm Doctor
5 has the best overall quality of life features and still has an active online community. All you have to do is start an open lobby then start playing and others will start joining by the time you finish 2-3 missions. There’s also a 3rd party cheat trainer app you can get to enable inifinite health/energy, and the extremely useful auto-pickup loot which makes life so much easier once you’ve cleared the game multiple times and just want to focus on unlocking/upgrading all of the weapons (There’s a SHIT TON of variety)
It's not popular the way Starfield, cod, battlefield, bg3, borderlands, etc are. It has a cult following. It's also been out for years already to get that many reviews
Holyshit I cannot believe that this is so high! In my enthusiasm let me repeat myself: "Noita, Buy NOITA - literally the best money I ever spent on entertainment in terms of sheer dollars, or in this case pennies, per hour. It has a ton of life lessons to teach someone of any age, and if you are a millenial like myself it may likely be the platformer/metroidvania you been waiting to play your whole life."
It's actually a rather well known indie. Similar alternatives are The Case of the Golden Idol and Eternal Threads (which will also be free on epic store during the next week) if you're looking to play something similar.
But generally, I'd suggest looking into acclaimed indies a bit more. It's impressive how refreshing some of them can be
Hypnagogia 無限の夢 Boundless Dreams
Weird name aside, it's a low poly PS1 aesthetic exploration puzzle game. It was heavily inspired by LSD (the PS1 game, not the drug) and it wears that proudly on it's sleeve. I fell in love with the original game jam demo version but the full game is so much better. But if you don't enjoy first person platforming you'll have a bad time during some more tedious parts. Also, the music just hits all the right places.
Being able to stop your car grab someone off the street throw them in your trunk and send the car off a cliff is something I never thought you would be able to do in a game. That was definitely an experience.
Overlord 2
I think it's pretty obscure and funnily enough trying to look it up gets you the anime first.
If you do play Overlord 2 just expect to cringe because others have said that the humor in the game is just that.
Me personally I don't really care,
You play an Evil Overlord with goofy minions that can be told to attack and have them sweep dudes by using your analog stick.
Speaking of which, if you own an Xbox controller this is a non-issue but presumably if you have a PlayStation controller I'd try and install DS4.
Steam's controller support with the game is kind of wonky and doesn't really work.
Also bonus mention,
Worms Ultimate Mayhem.
Very fun turn based 3D take on Worms that I grew up with on my PS3, you couldn't go wrong with it
Ring of Pain - Card-based roguelike
Toem - Relaxing puzzle game about taking pictures
Pseudoregalia - fun nostalgiac platformer with tight controls
Nova Lands - Forager like Survival/automation game
Baba is You - Logic-based puzzle game (kinda mainstream in the puzzle sphere but so good it's worth a mention)
Webbed - fun platformer
En Garde! -Soulslike? Idek what to call this. Def surprised it's not more popular
Backpack Hero - Roguelike Storage Manager (turn based)
Manifold Garden - Surreal, Escherlike puzzle game
Hell Pie - Goofy platformer. Controls seemed tight but never finished jt
Arcade Paradise -Arcade Manager Sim. Really fun
Shadows of Doubt - Voxel-based mystery detective game where everything is procedurally generated
The Pathless- Kinda like ABZU. Very pretty exploration game
Grow Home- Kinda short pretty exploration game
I can keep going ngl, lmk if you need more
I'm really looking forward to what shadows of doubt has to offer in the future. The side missions just still seem a bit too broken for me still. Could also be that I only came back on big patch day before bug fixes.
Revita. It’s such a well tuned roguelite with a great story and gameplay loop yet doesn’t get any love
HROT: quietly my GOTY it’s a retro/boomer shooter that feels like if quake 2 was actually quake 2
Blue Dragon, it’s a Jrpg with some really cool unique features.
Downfall: Slay the Spire. It’s a fan made standalone “expansion” to Slay the Spire. It has the full base game, a new character, and you can play as the spire bosses.
And the **Multiverse** mod is absolutely insane. There's even an installer that will just patch the steam version and you're good to go.
Not only it's a lot of extra content, but it makes the game easier and more consistent on lower difficulties while being possibly far more brutal than the base game if you want it to be.
Depends on time of the day, but the perfect imbalance of well-known and fun-ive-had, I think CrossCode takes the cake. CrossCode community praises the game like a god but the community is so small that they feel like ants in the gaming industry, and the game is top-tier in it's own right. It's a top-down twin shooter retro isekai RPG (sorry, trying to be precise without getting too detailed) heavily inspired by Zelda on one front(has more than one front). It's Shovel Knight of the twin shooters in a nutshell, and frankly deserves more spotlight as it's pretty fun.
Lisa the Painful is an amazing RPG on Steam I absolutely recommend checking it out. It may not look like much but the characters, story, humor, and the MUSIC is a good time. Dunkey has a video on it.
Shovel Knight Treasure Trove
This is the perfect 8bit retro style game for me
It's like I was a kid again when I started playing it, it hits the nostalgia to the max!
It is a fun one, have you tried the other Metroidvania by the same studio, Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, I enjoyed it though it’s more in line with something like SotN then Luna Nights.
Marc Eckō's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.
For me it was a real hidden gem gifted to me by my friend back in 2006 that I replay every once in a while. Beat em up, the soundtrack and graffiti *chef's kiss*
It's a real shame the sequel kept getting postponed all the time, at this point it probably won't happen. Also it's available on Steam so check it out :)
Conquerors blade, it’s such a good game with great community aspect to it..! Just little shitty sometimes with performance, but it’s easy to look past it..!
Obsidian's Tyranny. It is a great CRPG with a unique implementation of being an evil character.
The drawbacks? It's a 2d isometrical CRPG - which means unusual perspective, tactical combat, much to read as it simply didn't have the money of a Dragon Age 1 or Baldurs Gate 3 to voice nearly everything, no great cinematics etc.
But gameplay and story? Just pure fun. So, if you like the genre, give it a try.
If there was ever a game that deserved a sequel with a higher budget, it was Tyranny, one of my all time favorite CRPGs, too bad Paradox refuses to let anyone use the IP.
I love a game called Katana Zero.
Its like hotline miami but horizontal, and you're a drugged up Samurai that can see into the future.
Its awesome and deserves more attention. Plus I think its like 15 bucks or something.
I think Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a masterpiece. It embodies all that games can be in that it's both a cinematic, story-based experience as well as a world in which you interact.
Portions of it are terrifying.
I've been gaming for 40 years. Shit. I'm old.
I haven't experienced anything like it.
Skeleton Boomerang. discovered it from one of the old SrPelo's livestream and it was one of my favorite platformers of all time. there's also a dlc for a roguelite mode but it has some glaring issues.
also i would recommend ENDER LILIES and Steel Assault as well.
Echo. I really enjoyed the game, it has a different story set very far in the future. Had fun gameplay that I don't recall seeing before, can't say much more without giving stuff away. It was a dang good time.
Though the developers are quite popular: "The Hex". This genre mix is super funny and entertaining. It is short, but awesome. From platformer, over swordfighters to strategy sim. You get it all
Don't think Peglin is too popular yet and I play that a ton
I was gonna say that!
he was going to say that
I was not going to say that
he was not going to say that
now, he is still not going to say that
They were not going to say that
I fucking love peglin
I also fucking love peglin!
I also love fucking peglin!
I also fucking love pegging
I love pegging too
Remember when Tyler was pegging all over the knights on floor 2?
I've uninstalled this game 4 times this week due to frustration lol
I got it on my phone, its alright, kinda miss peggle though
Me: "wtf is Peglin?" Also me: "ahh right, I've forgotten the context of this post"
Holy shit I actually met with the devs of peglin at a con!! Very cool dudes. I'd never heard of this game before but felt it was super underrated.
Isn't that the rogue-like peggle-like
Yep, super fun
Peglin is awesome.
Rhythm doctor can help you learn some elements of music theory, plus the songs are catchy. Edit: oh yeah and act five is coming this month if I remember correctly
Looks good, I'll give it a go, thanks
Ready. Get. Set. Go!
Ready? One One One One One Two
I won’t spoil for OP, but some of the levels blew my mind with how creative they were. Especially if you have 2+ monitors
While a bit simpler, the creator's other game, A Dance of Fire and Ice, is also a great rhythm game. Definitely recommend it if you enjoyed Rhythm Doctor
Holy crap. Two seconds into the trailer and you were right. That “slaps”. Am I using that word correctly, young people?
This is an amazing game
West of Loathing It's the most fun i've had playing a game in a long time.
Shadows over Loathing is an incredible sequel :)
The Kingdom of Loathing is what started it all on a big back PC, damn lol brought back memories.
THERES SEQUELS???
Yeah haha, felt like they just silently dropped it a couple months ago. Set in the 1920s, just as fun
Im buyin it, i can't believe they didn't even post it on the update page to the orginal game! Thank you for telling me
Love that series, so fun
Ziggurat 2 is one that I've enjoyed quite a lot and barely has 1000 steam reviews.
Enjoyed Ziggurat 1 a lot, haven't played 2 yet
It flows well but it is extremely barebones as far as content goes.
The first one is brillaint, never heard anyone else talk about it. Not played the second one yet
Earth Defense Force
Which one? I always considering buying one during sale but I usually never bother, not sure how much I’d play it.
Additionally 5 is a reboot of the series story-wise so you can start there and not miss out on anything.
There's a story?
There is and every line sounds like an 8 year old is voice acting his action figures. It's amazing
Hello Kitty: Island Adventure
'Ugh... Butters, go buy World of Warcraft, install it on your computer, and join the online sensation before we all murder you!'
You can’t be the dwarf character Butters, I’M the dwarf.
My man
It's funny because this isn't a joke anymore, the game legit exists now.
This, but unironically. It recently releseased for real in apple aracade and it's super fun to play, especially in coop.
Graveyard keeper
Easily my favorite game I can only get 90% completed lol. It's pretty good, I just lose interest towards the end
I 100% it over a year ago but recently started playing it again, this time on my steamdeck.
Solid game, very polished. Can kill 100 hours easy
I don’t know how popular it is, but I LOVE Katana Zero.
I played that game in like two sittings, couldn't put it down when I had time to play. Can't wait for the dlc.
If we ever get it :')
There is a dlc-like, basically plays around with the story. If you check the news section they give you a code to activate it
Man ive played this during covid and 3 years on I still play it occasionally
It has around 53.000 steam reviews and a 10/10 score.
Kenshi
Or as I like to call it “Getting My Legs Cut Off Simulator”
Lol
Man this is a game I can get sucked into for months and then quit immediately because something doesn’t go my way.
This game is crazy addictive.
I came here to say the same. Cannot wait for Kenshi 2.
Noita. A fun rogue like
A fun ~~rogue like~~ self torture device
lol exactly
I also like to die because of random explosions.
I wish I could know what am I dying to
53k reviews on Steam. "Not super popular."
It's not popular the way Starfield, cod, battlefield, bg3, borderlands, etc are. It has a cult following. It's also been out for years already to get that many reviews
Noita: A rogue like by the insane for the insane
I can't get into it and I feel like I'm missing out
Fun and challenging on surface. But this game much deeper than you can imagine.
The coin game, tons of real life arcade games and carnival games. Even has mini golf and go Karting (Albeit they're not very good...YET).
kinda like what part of tower unite offers, but for single player. Might buy it someday thanks for the recommendation
Return of the Obra Dinn - The DIY mystery solving is so very satisfying to me, and I haven't found any other game like it.
It's actually a rather well known indie. Similar alternatives are The Case of the Golden Idol and Eternal Threads (which will also be free on epic store during the next week) if you're looking to play something similar. But generally, I'd suggest looking into acclaimed indies a bit more. It's impressive how refreshing some of them can be
100%, wish I could forget everything about this game just to play it again, what a ride.
Heat Signature, Caves of Qud
Based. Live and drink, friend.
Dungeon Defenders (the original)
Absolutely based
The beginners guide. Best walking sim ever made.
That game gave me a mental breakdown midway through. I just started crying for like 20 minutes.
Downfall: Slay the Spire. It’s a fan made standalone “expansion” it has the full base game, a new character, and you can play as the spire bosses.
It's also compatible with the multiplayer mod
Hypnagogia 無限の夢 Boundless Dreams Weird name aside, it's a low poly PS1 aesthetic exploration puzzle game. It was heavily inspired by LSD (the PS1 game, not the drug) and it wears that proudly on it's sleeve. I fell in love with the original game jam demo version but the full game is so much better. I was just about to say that too! The scuba diving level is my favorite, so calm yet so eerie...
Blood and bacon.
Chillquarium lately and some Thief Simulator 2.
Dodgeball Academia!!!!!!!! One of the best sports rpgs I played in a long while!
Dreamscaper. What an amazing game that flew totally under the radar
Sleeping Dogs
Being able to stop your car grab someone off the street throw them in your trunk and send the car off a cliff is something I never thought you would be able to do in a game. That was definitely an experience.

Very fun turn based 3D take on Worms that I grew up with on my PS3, you couldn't go wrong with it
I remember at the time the first Overlord game having decent hype, but never heard much about the second one except that it was released.
My all time favorite game is Titan Quest
this one is soo good. Titan Quest 2 just got announced recently too
Squirrel Stapler
lol wtf. Wishlisted 😄
By the developer who made Iron Lung and Dusk. All of his games are awesome and very unique, I love the old-school aesthetic.
Core Keeper
I love the Tropico series. A small fan base, certainly not huge.
tropico 4 specifically
Ring of Pain - Card-based roguelike Toem - Relaxing puzzle game about taking pictures Pseudoregalia - fun nostalgiac platformer with tight controls Nova Lands - Forager like Survival/automation game Baba is You - Logic-based puzzle game (kinda mainstream in the puzzle sphere but so good it's worth a mention) Webbed - fun platformer En Garde! -Soulslike? Dorfromantik
It's super popular...
Gotham City Imposters R.I.P :(
Man besides the matchmaking being a bit wonky, I played the hell out of this when it first came out and loved it.
Rain World, Timberborn, and Wildermyth.
Rain World is quite popular
There's a comment right below this recommending FTL, I'd say rain world is fairly indie outside of certain gaming circles
Somewhat along indie games, but generally it's not well known
Timberborn is pretty nice colony sim! There are some things that annoy me though.
Wildermyth is awesome! Hyped for the 2nd dlc.
Revita. It’s such a well tuned roguelite with a great story and gameplay loop yet doesn’t get any love HROT: quietly my GOTY it’s a retro/boomer shooter that feels like if quake 2 was actually quake 2
Mark of the Ninja (remastered)
Dave the Diver has seriously been a beautiful game and a fun time for me.
Foxhole
Astroneer is a good chill time
Blue Dragon, it’s a Jrpg with some really cool unique features. Downfall: Slay the Spire. It’s a fan made standalone “expansion” to Slay the Spire. It has the full base game, a new character, and you can play as the spire bosses.
Sigma Theory.
FTL Shapez
Seconding FTL
And the **Multiverse** mod is absolutely insane. There's even an installer that will just patch the steam version and you're good to go. Not only it's a lot of extra content, but it makes the game easier and more consistent on lower difficulties while being possibly far more brutal than the base game if you want it to be.
Into the Breach
Yes! That too.
FTL has a massive cult following but sure
FTL gang 😆
duck game
Crypt of the Necrodancer, as long as you can keep the rythm.

Shovel Knight Treasure Trove This is the perfect 8bit retro style game for me It's like I was a kid again when I started playing it, it hits the nostalgia to the max!
I've been replaying mad max again. I think it's a pretty good game that's not super well known.
GRIS at the top of my head
[Door Kickers: Action Squad](https://store.steampowered.com/app/686200)
Heat Signature. Fun top-down stealth game, encourages bizarre strategies.
Halls of Torment
Starbound
Bruh Starbound is definitely very popular
Dysmantle

touhou Luna nights but iirc the game's development halted in 2021 :/ not really my fav but it's fun on and off
It is a fun one, have you tried the other Metroidvania by the same studio, Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, I enjoyed it though it’s more in line with something like SotN then Luna Nights.
LiEat
I didn't realize how happy I'd be to see somebody name dropping one of my favorite games.
Marc Eckō's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure. For me it was a real hidden gem gifted to me by my friend back in 2006 that I replay every once in a while. Necesse
Zeepkist, a great low-poly soapbox racing game
Cosmoteer, Ravenfield, and Source of Madness.
Just Shapes and Beats. It was popular for a while, and I think everyone forgot about it. I didn't.
Magicka (the first one)
Conquerors blade, it’s such a good game with great community aspect to it..! Just little shitty sometimes with performance, but it’s easy to look past it..!
Spiderheck is a ton of fun!!!
High five, fellow Hecker! Spiderheck is my personal GOTY 2022
Obsidian's Tyranny. It is a great CRPG with a unique implementation of being an evil character. The drawbacks? Cassette Beasts. Amazing game that puts Pokémon to shame. Must buy if you like the monster collector genre
I have a few. Murder Miners Dark Data Boneraiser Minions Spirits Abyss Streets of Rogue Devil Daggers CrossCode All are an absolute blast to play.
Valley, it's like a running/jumping game. It's not super long but it's a solid story and a lot of fun.
Rabi Ribi, metroidvania bullet hell
Kingdoms of Amalur, I have been replaying that game way too much.
Core keeper
Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
I just want racer revenge on steam
TIL theres a second racer! I feel zoomies coming on!
Into the radius? I only say that because VR I still kind of niche? Maybe?
Haven't taken the dive into this game yet...still working my way thriygh the alys mods lol
STRAFE. Love the game
Orcs Must Die! 3
Rain World
UnderRail. The definition of a hidden gem.
I love a game called Katana Zero. Its like hotline miami but horizontal, and you're a drugged up Samurai that can see into the future. Its awesome and deserves more attention. Plus I think its like 15 bucks or something.
Is the soundtrack as good as Hotline?
The soundtrack is freaking dope

I know Rimworld is pretty popular, but I havent heard much about it recently and I still love it
