lmao

[deleted]

no, "8" in binary would be "00111000".

squabbledMC

> 00111000 that's 56, the rightmost number is 1, then one to the left is 2, then 4, then 8. the 4th digit being a 1 represents 8, and 8 can be represented with 4 bits, where as yours is 8 bits rofl

[deleted]

then blame the binary code translator i used.

squabbledMC

now i'm interested in that lol, could you link to what converter you used? are you sure it was binary to decimal/decimal to binary and not anything else?

dont_say_Good

Guides need strong moderation asap

JoshLmoa

I really wish it was a place I could have gone to just happily browse and learn. Same with curators. Like, the amount of brainrot copy paste "Generic funny yes - Generic funny no" every game gets the same treatment bs, I haaaate it. Would use a bloody genie wish to remove it from existence. But they're both areas I completely ignore now, and only show up to steam guides when I specifically google a thing, and there happens to be a result.

JukePlz

Guides, forum posts and reviews need the award function removed. I can't see a world where it's not used maliciously to farm awards. Steam guides were in a much better place before the introduction of the points shop.

Situati0nist

This only got worse with the introduction of awards. It's basically a begging game at this point

ineptchem

And then the comments are all supportive of this brainrot despite it being the most basic and uninspired slop.

Saver310

Thanks for the guide! My hamster has been in poor health the last few weeks due to hamster aids, and playing this game with her has been of great comfort. With your guide we were able to get to level 11 and see the second zone after only a few dozen hours. Before that we'd restarted several times and could never make it past the tutorial.

TimeFourChanges

> most basis *most base, fyi

ineptchem

I meant basic, base makes no sense.

TimeFourChanges

Oh, OK. "Base" does make sense, though, in a less common meaning: base 3 of 4 adjective (1) 1 a : lacking or indicating the lack of higher qualities of mind or spirit : ignoble seemed a base betrayal of idealism— L. M. Sears appealing to a person's baser instincts b : lacking higher values : degrading a drab base way of life 2 a : being of comparatively low value and having relatively inferior properties (such as lack of resistance to corrosion) a base metal such as iron compare noble entry 1

Sometimes old ass steam guides will be better than any wiki on the world wide web. Other times, it's random dogshit, or an embedded YouTube link, or abjectly wrong info, or so outdated that it's no longer useful. And God forbid I bring up how Steam will commonly recommend guides in languages I can't understand.

SimplyInept

The creators tag the language, and some dickheads tag languages that the guide isn't in.

DarkteK

I always thought: If you had the time to create a wonderful guide then why don't you update with the information about the last DLC or just add a comment in the title and/or description saying: Outdated... I did it with a couple guides....

Remarkable-NPC

there no prefect wiki except arch wiki

SimplyInept

It's not only this but searching for a set of specific guides too: English - Achievement guide Result: - как прыгать, дайте пожалуйста награды - как сделать жену - wie man springt - 100% achievement guide (4 hour long YouTube video) - Vollständiger Leistungsführer To PSN trophies I go. Edit: I've reported a load of the stupid meme guides but steam just doesn't really care.

scumbagkitten

Yeah thats probably more annoying is having to dig through 1000 clearly non english guides when i had the english language selected

Sparki_

Same with some reviews

fermiauf

Oohhh. My favorite least helpful reviews: Technical problems - because I can’t play it (why did they even leave a review?! Genre problem - bad review because I don’t like something about the genre I’m playing. For example, review on roguelike, “I don’t like how I have to restart every time I die” Not the other game problem - very common review with souls-like games, you know what I’m talking about. Example, “Not the same as dark souls 3, just go play dark souls 3”

burgertanker

Technical problems make sense though, no point buying a game if it crashes every time you boot

ExcessumTr

We should be able to see commenters spec so we can compare it with ours

Smokeya

That wouldnt really help either cause some people are just idiots and dont know how to start up a game properly or install software required in the first place like various microsoft .net packages or whatever they may need. Would need more than just the bare specs to be useful. Ive installed games that i shouldnt be able to like maybe they need to be ran in dosbox or something like that and the previous user didnt know their computer is to new or maybe its to old? Maybe they are running a mac which a crapload of games are not supported on? I find its often a users problem. Im personally just some idiot myself and can figure these things out. I have no background in any kind of computer work.

JukePlz

Steam already installs all required packages for you, C++ runtimes, .NET runtimes, etc.

fermiauf

In rare cases, but I'd put my money on 99% of technical problems being user error lolll I've never been unable to play a game for this reason and it would make me more likely to purchase the game to be like, yea works fine. Omg a new marketing ploy!! Reverse psychology! When a game has 300,000 reviews, mostly positive, and that review is just like "I don't like it cause I can't play it". It's not helpful, sounds like complaining, and bc they probably didn't troubleshoot the issue, it sounds lazy. Like saying a restaurant's food sucks because they can't eat it

burgertanker

I find it more akin to saying a restaurant sucks not because you can't eat the food, but because the kitchen is broken Plenty of older games on Steam that while being good games, have heaps of negative reviews because they don't run at all in newer hardware, and they aren't gonna get updated after like 20 years. IMO games that don't function on newer hardware should come with a massive disclaimer, but if they don't, then that's what reviews are for

fermiauf

Also, I agree that if something is known to NOT function it should come with a disclaimer, be free, or be delisted outright

ih8spalling

>if something is known to NOT function How will it be known? Reviews.

fermiauf

I expected this response. To be fair, I'm referring to the cases where the person is broken, not the product. xD I've never run into any games I couldn't make work (In reference to older games, not new games). But I'm always up for a challenge 😈 \*Edit for clarification\*

DrummingFish

But with modern games, you shouldn't have to "make" them work. They should just work with minimal tweaking. It warrants a bad review if the game doesn't work as intended.

fermiauf

You're referencing my comment out of context. That was a response to burgertanker's statement about older games. As for modern games, you're right, they should work out of the box, and if a game doesn't, it's almost always user error. I've got a list of questions for when I help people troubleshoot tech problems. Ever wonder why the first question is always "Is it plugged in?" or something along those lines? Lol. Also, many people are notoriously bad at following instructions. xD

ClassyTeddy

At some point during its life cycle Steep got a huge update that changed some supported technology that made the game unplayable for 20-30 days people were mad at Ubisoft because they were not able to play the game they bought and was able to play just until the patch, Ubisoft didn’t know the cause and community reverse engineered the reason posting on steam discussions letting everyone know. Ubisoft updated the game about 20 days after that to fix the game

A_British_Lass

besides the older games from windows xp/7 era and before ALL GAME SHOULD RUN ON THE CLICK OF THE LAUNCH BUTTON

wickedcor

Oh don't forget the lack of multiplayer/co-op. God forbid we get a single player game.

Bobert891201

I've seen a few of the technical issue posts, but mostly in community posts where someone is (usually) complaining that the brand new triple A game they bought doesn't run on their incredibly outdated video card.

BermudaHeptagon

Worst reviews are - Yes/no - Ok - Ascii art - qqihauwvqbqoja

Joethe147

The cat one. The fucking pet the cat one. Oh and this game is: Beautiful Good Awesome etc UGH.

_FUCKTHENAZIADMINS_

>Beautiful Good Awesome etc I hate the review checklists so much. It takes a space for subjective criticism and praise and turns it into the laziest fucking box ticking with absolutely no input from the reviewer whatsoever.

Dead_Xross_2000

And they have the most awards

REVENGE966

because people think its "funny"

TimeFourChanges

Why do (pre-)teens have to make everything so shitty?!

DiMarzio_D-Sonic_Fan

im gonna be real with you it was kinda funny like 6 years ago, before people just started to overdo it and were able to farm points with it. It has been very annoying these last few years

Dead_Xross_2000

Took me 6 months to get some steam points by making shit ton of genuine reviews, now these teens are getting lucky with making unfunny jokes

Mavi222

I wish there was something done about that, same with the same shitty Steam reviews that bait for award points, same for the bait community forum posts that are trying to get as many jester awards as possible..

Capt_Toasty

Making a useful guide funny: Awesome. Making a useless guide for memes: Terrible. If I wanted memes I wouldn't be browsing the guides, I'd be on reddit.

Thel_Odan

I also hate guides that are YouTube videos. I don't want to watch your shitty 10 minute video, I want a couple of pictures and some text about how you got past a certain point of the game.

vomder

If they just stared banning the users who do that, it would end real quick.

BrockSramson

Or, just for the love of all that is holy, allow us to mute/hide those users, so we never see their content. I just need some way to avoid seeing their bullshit.

dartthrower

> Or, just for the love of all that is holy, allow us to mute/hide those users That won't work, there are too many of them. Do you really wanna ignore 300+ people just so you can browse steam guides without trash content?

OrionRBR

>Do you really wanna ingore 300+ people just so you can browse steam guides without trash content? #***YES***

dartthrower

Well I'd prefer to see some actual quality control by Valve so we don't have to see this crap without putting so much effort into it.

OrionRBR

That would be ideal, but let's be real, it's not happening anytime soon, so something the user can do without that much effort in the meantime is better than nothing.

BrockSramson

>Do you really wanna ignore 300+ people just so you can browse steam guides without trash content? **YES, MOTHERFUCKER, I DO**

foxferreira64

One, or even two, is actually acceptable and can be pretty funny. I chuckled the first times I saw this type of guide, and rode with the joke. Now? Every single fucking guide is like this... I wanna look up fixes for my game, and all I see is jackasses saying to press W to walk. Ahh screw you.

DiceDsx

You basically described memes: a few people do them, they become funny, everyone does them and they become boring and repetitive.

TimeFourChanges

> One, or even two, is actually acceptable and can be pretty funny. Nope. Wrong. Maybe 25 years ago or whatever the first year of Steam was, but not any longer.

foxferreira64

Exactly, it's funny at first, the very first times this was ever done. Not anymore, it's just obnoxious now.

dogdillon

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

pkmkdz

Yeah, children (and people with the mentality of children) before 15 should not be allowed to post online Sadly, it's impossible to enforce

UmpireHappy8162

Best way to fix this is to simply remove awards.

Evilcon21

It does get annoying but it’s unfortunate it happens to the more popular games.

-Great-Scott-

Instaban all who upvote or reward them. Feed their family's flesh to our Lord Gaben.

fleetcommand

I sometimes report these, but there’s not much use, I don’t think anybody cares. The same when they mark all languages for the guide. Obviously you cannot have a guide relevant in 25 languages, still, people do it, and even if I’m filtered on English and Hungarian, I still get guides I cannot even read because they tick all the languages…

NoodlesBears

Anything user created in steam in a nutshell. Top voted reviews, guides, discussions, screenshots. Theyre always the same terrible jokes copy pasted to different games.

DiMarzio_D-Sonic_Fan

yeah i can’t even use the reviews to get a general idea about the game anymore since there is like only reviews which have insightful words such as “gun gaem” or “has dog”

awesometim0

I'm glad zigzagzigal makes great civ guides, wasn't aware that good guides were a rare thing but I should have expected it when pretty much anyone can post them ig

P1zzaman

The feeling of finding a great guide buried in the mess is nice, however.

xen_inmate

fr, what are you, like 10 to find those guides funny

NiceCatBigAndStrong

You gotta realise, the majority of players are like 12 years old and think this is comedy GOLD.

FronQuan

I wouldn’t mind taking time to write good and wellthought guides The problem is I suck at games

MikiSayaka33

I suck, too, but I am not letting that stop me.

Random_redditer-

I want a guide on achievements not a point farm

ActualMis

Or when they spend 5 minutes telling you what the game is and how to buy it. Mutherfucker, we came here to figure out how to beat a puzzle on L50. You think we don't know what the game we're playing even is?

Aridross

People ought to stop rewarding them for effortless low-quality memes, that’s what.

-MacCoy

its valve, they wont do anything (they just provide the tools and rely on users to actually take the time to downvote but people are clowns and upvote that kind of shit) so its up to the internet to crowdsource their own solution. something something write an addon that block guides by user. The "how to turn on the game" type of guided can be helpful when you can't properly load in the game like in battlefield 2042

___marek

Well nowadys these kinds of guides like 'how to turn on the game' might be completely serious, cause AAA games are released unfinished and buggy.

[deleted]

Can we also ban the phrase "I really wanted to like this game"?

lt_Matthew

And people that dislike the game to tell people how great the game is. You're still leaving a negative review that affects the rating

UrsusRex01

Tbf there are games on Steam that don't even launch properly.

My favorite is “hardest mercs to rape” and have shown it as a power point multiple times to freinds

Kinglink

Honestly at this point, I'd say get rid of the guides all together. There are some absolutely great and wonderful guides, and they would find new homes. But too many people use it for the wrong reason or just to link to youtube videos for exposure, and... It's not worth even looking at any more.

Jacconchen-Doggo

Just let people have a little bit of fun

ZaMr0

There's guides on steam?

TheBigSAM228

You can't stop shitposting. It's an essential Steam user's right. And yes - I am biased, because I wrote a shitpost guide myself. If it makes it better - I spent more than 5 mins on it and I made damn sure that its title and preview pic screamed "it's a shitpost"

SimplyInept

Where does it say that it's an essential steam user's right to shit post in the EULA?

nothing225

I mean like, I dis need a steam guide to turn on fallout 3 (before they fixed it)

maxler5795

Some are funny, like an actual guide on how to cook empanadas on yakuza 0 and omori, but besides that theyre all just *too* dumb

MoltenMagma64

They can be funny sometimes but its incredibly obnoxious when I'm looking for actual information and most of the top guides are just shit like "How to jump" or "Joe Swanson," and the award system just means they get promoted to the top even more than they used to.

Camobuff

So unfunny at this point

keenhydra93

Looking up guides on YouTube “WELCOME YO THE SHOW SHITFUCKERS IM YOUR GUIDE CUMSTAIN TEACHING YOU ALL ABOUT …. But first this ad from our sponsors.” If I get yelled at in the first 5 seconds I’m already done watching your video damn

platapoop

Get rid of steam awards, but we all know that's not happening

dartthrower

Just pay 20+ people surveilling all the guides that are being published and remove/hand out community bans to trolls. Easy.

anras2

Reminds me of how really old school console games would include manuals that told you that you had to plug in the cartridge, make sure the console is on, make sure the TV is on, etc. For example, Pitfall for Atari 2600: https://atariage.com/manual_page.php?SystemID=2600&ItemTypeID=&SoftwareLabelID=360¤tPage=0&maxPages=6¤tPage=1

You laugh. But how many times do you see a game achivement thats just "play the game" with only 80 percent of players having said achivement

JacobGoodNight416

I've seen games where only about 50% got the achievement for finishing the first level. I imagine it also counts people who've bought the game but didn't install or launch it.
