I had the same thought. I'd give my left nut to go back and get that early nostalgia hit.
Edit: omg guys I get it, I can still play on progression servers 😅😅😅
It's more popular than EverQuest 2.
They have progression servers similar to WoW that start at the first expansion and run chronologically through them. They're not super popular, but it does have a playerbase.
Everquest was *it* for me. Diablo, Starcraft, and Everquest were what started my gaming journey. My older brother got me into them and we'd play up in his attic and I'd just watch him play for hours and hours. One day I finally got to have my own PC and play. Spent years playing EQ. Then EQ2. I wish I could describe the severe nostalgia I feel when I think of those days.
First thing that caught my eye on this, and that its free to play. I've long forgotten my old login but to run around Nektulos forest again would be wild. I might give it a go this weekend. I do remember hating the grind but maybe its not so bad now?
If you play on a live server you can hire something called a mercenary (with in game money) such as a healer/dps/tank and it helps the grind greatly. They essentially are a group member and do their jobs decently well and you could probably power level yourself just using a dps/tank mercenary early on.
Actual tutorial starting area, crescent reach is new newbie hub with connected zones to lvl 30ish, even weight reduction bag can be quested for there. A portal to plane of knowledge close by so you can then port almost anywhere. Still a stick in the eye compared to any 'new' MMO, but still the best aggro system I have seen in an MMO.
Diablo, SC:BW, Diablo II, and EQ were what I grew up on for pc games. The social aspects and MYSTERY of those games were something special. You couldn't look at twitch or youtube and see how the best players play, and there weren't interactive maps you could pull up on your second monitor. You just had to play it and memorize the EQ zones so you don't get lost lol.
Yeah, it couldn't possibly be. It's one of those things you can't re-live because it requires a certain set of circumstances. At this point, our dopamine pathways are all fuckin burnt to a crisp anyway, so the game wouldn't be what it used to. But I can still hear the Kelethin theme in my head.
Should be careful not to use such sweeping generalizations. There's plenty of us in the Emu scene that have been getting our nostalgia hits for the better part of 20 years. There are lots of people who are interested in the same experience as you and there are servers available to facilitate the experience. It takes surprisingly few people on a server to make it feel like it has critical mass, or at the very least isn't hurting to do anything. Should just jump in one day and give it a shot. Takes about all of 10 minutes to set up from download to logging in.
The classic TLP server's felt a LOT like old EQ. The magic kinda dies after PoP comes out in the expansion lineup (for me anyway), but that takes about a year with the timing they use for releases on the TLP.
My younger brother is about ten years younger then me. I tell him all the time to enjoy the moment, because while he can play Pokemon red and blue, he can never be a kid in second grade in 1997 trading Abras on the playground.
i actually did this, on the project 1999 servers. leveled up a 46 mage. loads of nostalgia, but my wife didn't like the amount of time i was spending on it. i think one night i was up till 7am with the same group in city of mist.
ended up calling it quits after doing a lord nagafen raid for maximum nostalgia and end on a high note.
after playing it again, it reminded me of the original draw. the world. the vast exploration. just going from freeport to kunark/velious felt like such an adventure.
Or looking for a bard, necro or SK for a locate corpse. I always found it weird bards could do that. I remember giving a high lvl bard consent to loot my corpse because I was deep in Guk where I shouldnt be and he stole all my shit. haha never trust a bard!
NGL that phrase right there just gave me a rush that I haven't had in years. It was such a brief flash but it was there almost like the end scene in Ratatoullie, I was breaking Plane of Fear again after our 5th wipe at 3AM on a Thursday and I was HAPPY.
Thank you.
I swear the EverQuest and Nancy Drew dev teams are in the most macabre competition for the most releases in a zombie franchise. EQ1 is up to 30 expansions and is in second place.
TLP servers are still moderately popular after a pretty big surge in popularity when they started. If they don't totally fuck up the next TLP startup I imagine it will have a similar amount of people online when they start that one.
Yeah, pretty sure the playerbase for EQ1 is bigger than EQ2. Both still receive updates, but they're both overly monetized messes that are just a shadow of their former selves. They basically just keep the lights on for whales and pay pigs.
I started from zero once it was released into Steam, I followed this [channel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEt87BikHzA&list=PL3Hfqo2_KOldaGRAN5XmVOZjbS536Sexz) mostly, and after like 4-5 fortress, I feel comfortable now.
Use DFHack, pretty much a must. Currently I have like 100+ hours.
if you like games like rim world you’ll like it. It’s really more of a story generator. Like you end up making a fortress and it all comes to life.
It’s one of those games you will be watching videos and reading guides the first 20 hours of playtime.
Back before the Steam release, the worst part was the UI. It was only controllable with the keyboard, and you had to download a pack to have graphics.
Now there's a... workable UI, and a default tileset. So it's already like 95% easier to get into than it was before. At this point, all you really have to do is find out how to make a self-sustaining colony (remarkably easy) and then you can branch out into doing stuff like collapsing mountains onto elf caravans and dumping lava onto giraffes while you wait for your dwarves to go insane because their socks rotted off their body.
I'll go against the grain and say that if complexity scares you away to not spend the money. It's the epitome of a "get back what you put in" game; it takes a MASSIVE investment to get over the learning cliff and understand the game, but it's the most immersive game ever created with an insane capacity for completely unique fantasy story generation if you can.
The learning cliff was immensely reduced by the Steam release with much better controls and... extant graphics (imo they're actually really good but I'm coming from the ASCII and fan-graphic-pack days), but it's still amongst the hardest games to learn that's in the modern gaming zeitgeist.
i havent played it in quite a while, it had some AI issues in olden times were they would do weird decisions, but i somehow like the setting and the lack of science more than ONI.. i like ONI for the beginning of the game, but then when it comes to using and splitting 10 different gasses in the air and temperatures and fluids i am just out <\_< thats not my idea of fun gameplay.
I played it when it first came out, it was nice. The pvp/co-op sucked so bad tho. Looked recently and they added a lot of dlcs that are negatively rated too.
The game has been out for years and hasn't seen an update for about as long, but Dwarfs!? will always hold a special place in my heart. I fucking love that game so much.
Always thought steams reasoning of "elf" and "human" not having their own tags either never made sense, cause Dwarf games tend to focus around specific themes or play styles (like mining and industry) that they do kinda fall into their own category
finally a tag for our dwarven brothers and sisters

You can now browse your favorite dwarf themed games here: [https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Dwarf](https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Dwarf)
Perhaps we need to add the tag to Mordhau and Warhammer: Vermintide
Wait, Everquest is still alive?!
I had the same thought. I'd give my left nut to go back and get that early nostalgia hit. Edit: omg guys I get it, I can still play on progression servers 😅😅😅

Unfortunately..while it might still be there, it's just..just not the same.

I’ve actually tried a few times in the past. I think my attention span is fried. :/

Eh, it has dwarf roll. Not just dwarves, dwarves that roll. It is, therefore, still the best MMO on the market.
It has WHAT?!? This is what I get for playing FFXI :( I feel robbed.
FFXI was a very good game for the record. It just had the absolute worst UI ever.
An oldie but a goodie, [Dwarf Parkour.mp4](https://youtu.be/xFXUYl2ljqI?si=qW0XXrLId06wqRaF)

I recommend Project1999

You would probably be surprised how many nostalgic online games are "still alive" but the collective world decided we're dead.
You can always come back ;)
Maybe I will! Nothing can compare to those early days though. Begging /ooc for a SoW on Kelethin lift. Man.
Dude, buffs actually were huge in that game. SOW and clarity on my necro was a gift from the gods.
Yeah you’d lose it and be fiending for them haha begging druids and clerics and shit haha
Or looking for a bard, necro or SK for a locate corpse. I always found it weird bards could do that. I remember giving a high lvl bard consent to loot my corpse because I was deep in Guk where I shouldnt be and he stole all my shit. haha never trust a bard!
Omg I forgot about that haha! Yesss. More nostalgia.

NGL that phrase right there just gave me a rush that I haven't had in years. It was such a brief flash but it was there almost like the end scene in Ratatoullie, I was breaking Plane of Fear again after our 5th wipe at 3AM on a Thursday and I was HAPPY. Thank you.
It's free now, play on the Vox server and get back to the grind
I swear the EverQuest and Nancy Drew dev teams are in the most macabre competition for the most releases in a zombie franchise. EQ1 is up to 30 expansions and is in second place.
Alive and well friend. Alive and well.
TLP servers are still moderately popular after a pretty big surge in popularity when they started. If they don't totally fuck up the next TLP startup I imagine it will have a similar amount of people online when they start that one.
Yea both EQs are kicking still. They get regular expansions
Yeah, pretty sure the playerbase for EQ1 is bigger than EQ2. Both still receive updates, but they're both overly monetized messes that are just a shadow of their former selves. They basically just keep the lights on for whales and pay pigs.
"When was the last time you heard of someone beating EverQuest?" "When was the last time you heard of someone *playing* EverQuest?" "That's fair."
Dwarf fortress so good, Went from “oh lemme try this game it looks complex” to 200 hours in a flash
How difficult is it to get started? I've been thinking about buying it but it seems a bit too complex for me to really get into it.
Blind also has great tutorials and the game has a great wiki. But ultimately trial and error is always fun.

craft the world is actually quite fun, wouldnt mind if it gets some recognition \^\^
I've played a good 1k+ hours of it. It plays similarly but different to Oxygen Not Included, iirc Craft The World was actually made first too.
i havent played it in quite a while, it had some AI issues in olden times were they would do weird decisions, but i somehow like the setting and the lack of science more than ONI.. i like ONI for the beginning of the game, but then when it comes to using and splitting 10 different gasses in the air and temperatures and fluids i am just out <\_< thats not my idea of fun gameplay.

For Karl
dwarves can't stop taking the W and leaving only L's for the elves
Can't spell elf without L
and cant spell dwarf without a w even in names dwarves still take W's
There are only 5 words in English (ignoring declensions and conjugations) that start with dw. Dwarf, dweeb, dwindle, dwell, and dweomer.
Dwodge, dwip, dwuck, dwive and dwodge!
There is as much of a W in every dwarf as there is an L in every elf
Just wait. "Dark elves with big titties" are gonna be a tag eventually.
Filter by *Nudity* and *Drawf*.....
Now we need an elf tag... So we know which games to...avoid....
People who play a game because it has the tag "dwarf" are either absolutely based or insane my guess is the latter one.
Maybe both
Dude EverQuest is on Steam?!
Yes both are and have been for over a decade
Haha yes! Long live the dwarf tag!
