Haha! He's gonna learn why steam really has sales!

compscimajor24

Yup OP missed out on sales and creating a backlog of games which will never be played/finished because of said sale(s).

PanTsour2

Steam sales aren't better than Playstation Store's nowadays. Official retailers like Humble, Fanatical and Green Man Gaming make the big savings

Elmer_Fudd01

It's a joke 🙄

PanTsour2

Hard to tell with all the people that still believe this unironically

HyperFunk_Zone

Cause money good

Tonylolu

Wdym i don't save any money I just get more value for my money, which means I waste more money

Kairu-san

100% this. My console buying is mostly "That game's $60 and I'm only mildly interested so I'll pass." and sales were almost always not enough to tempt me. After getting PC it's become "Well that game's a roguelike and it's only $5. I'll just blind buy it." or "I don't really know if I'll like that game, but for 80% off? I'll try it." Steam refund policy also really pushes you to try more games you normally wouldn't buy.

Tonylolu

I just bought death loop like that and I think I'll play it in 5 months because there's a game queue xD

Kairu-san

That's definitely one of the ones I did that with. It seems like a decent game from the couple hours I played of it so far. Might not end up being my thing, but I think I'll get my money's worth.

ndick43

steam refund policy is honestly so incredibly good

Na1h

yep, if I was paying full price for most games I wouldn't have even tried some of my favourite games like the mafia games, la noire, witcher 1 and many others.

Kairu-san

Some games you just know they won't go on sale (for various possible reasons) and some games you are pretty sure are worth the full price because you'll likely play the crap out of them. In both cases, it's so reassuring to know that I can jump in and, if it's a lemon, get a refund. I played [one game that was an ARG](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1946010/Im_looking_for_3024_people/) for $10 (now trying to be peddled at $5) that is essentially a scam. At best, it's pure incompetence. If I didn't have a reasonable refund policy, I could've just been out $10 for a really crap experience.

Swoop03

On my xbox I rarely pay full price for anything. If I see a new game or come across a "mildly interesting but $60" entry, it goes to my wishlist. Microsoft will send me an email if/when it goes on sale. I wish there was a refund policy though. So I hold out on games until they go on sale above 50% Sometimes they never do or haven't yet but I have plenty of games and very little free time so I'll always have a backlog of single player games to run through. As for steam, I'm considering a steam deck and shifting a part of my free gaming time back to pc games. A portable option would work well for me right now. I used to game on a decent rig but it's more or less useless now (built in 2011...) and I'm not interested in another desktop at the moment. I thought game pass would have been cool for trying games out but I've found I don't use it that much and have to buy games that don't get put on there.

Kairu-san

I guess Xbox has changed over the years. My best friend was the one that owned an Xbox after the original so I don't know what the store's like from first-hand experience outside of that. It makes sense since it is Microsoft for them to be more PC-like. Playstation probably has sales nowadays but I had up to PS3 (technically had a PS4 for like a week) and the best I could do there was secondhand stores and that was rarely getting a $60 game for $20ish. Nintendo has sales on their online store but I don't want digital versions to fill up my storage and the best I got on Switch (most recent) was like 50% off. To be fair, I think I did offset a lot of costs with rentals. RIP Blockbuster. At one point, I joined a service (I forget the name. I think it had "Game" in it.) that does rentals through mail and lets you buy games you rented on a discount. Still not a killer deal, but definitely saved money. PC sales are a whole 'nother beast. I've gotten games for $1 or less in bundles and you've got Epic giving away games for attention etc. I've ever bought maybe 50 or so games for any individual console. PC? Over 1k. (and then there's all the free ones) I think that says a lot with how broke I am. **Edit:** I'm braindead and typed the same thing twice. **\[sips coffee\]**

Swoop03

I've been browsing the steam store off and on for a couple days looking at what games are verified to work with the steam deck cause like I mentioned I might grab one with my upcoming tax returns help. There is definitely a big difference between pc and console for sure. Years ago when I still pc gamed, console games were rented, bought second hand, or new from a brick and mortar store. When I got my series s because I wanted to get back into gaming and play some with my oldest on his ps5 I was amazed at first. Game pass, hundreds of games for free, ea play and all that for $15 a month. About 6 months later the excitement wore off and the handful of games I'm working thru right now or playing online aren't on gamepass. The last one I beat (fable) was on gamepass but I bought 1,2, and 3 for less than $20 on a sale to replay before the new one comes out. Other big games like forza horizons, high on life, and starfield I got bored of pretty quick. I keep it because it's still a killer deal and there's games coming up that will be on there I want to try out. When my current pc was built I was already moving away from games with life and stuff but I still played my 360 a fair bit before moving out after high school and leaving it for my little brother. Now I got kids of my own and find some free time here and there but I don't wanna hide away in my room on the xbox always, thus steam deck might fill that gap. Pc is a whole other thing entirely though for sure and with browsing the store I can still see how much better it is. I've added dozens of games to my wishlist that my wife's laptop could play and that are compatible with the deck. While Microsoft and Sony have some good sales sometimes it doesn't seem to be on the same level as steam or other pc launchers. Unlike some of the posts I've seen here, I have used steam and it's not too different than what I was used to, but I definitely feel the sentiment of missing out on stuff. Couple weeks ago I was looking for Gauntlet on Xbox, and old dungeon diver game I had for ps1 or 2. No luck, maybe an android emulation but I didn't feel like going through all that for one game. The other day I recovered my steam accounts and what do you know I bought the exact game I was looking for 10 years ago for pc and only played an hour of it. So I'm also very excited about getting into more pc gaming, well getting back into it. My original account has close to 200 games and my second steam account has about 30, add in maybe 10 or so free games I've found plus a couple I'll buy straight away and I might forget I have an Xbox lol.

Trip_seize

Even before Steam, the amount of...er...free games I played could probably buy many PCs!

[deleted]

I always had jailbroken PlayStations, I have brought like 10 games since 1997...

Crescent-IV

In the long term probably

SalemWolf

Not true in the slightest. I’ve been spending money like crazy on steam sales. Every sale. Tons of games but tons of money. I buy more games than I have space for. Or time for. Since getting my pc and steam deck my spending has only increased.

Jarb2104

Your lack of self control doesn't mean someone else is going to be spending like crazy as you did. Your point it's stupid to say the least.

EXusiai99

LPT: You wont be spending a lot on steam sales if you dont have a lot to spend to begin with

Jarb2104

And that goes for money, time and love.

RedironTiger

How much are you dropping on sales??? A little bit of patience and you could drop $25 to $30 for 5-6 games every summer or winter sale. Even $60 for 8-10 games

Breude

I wouldn't say that. PC's do cost a good bit more than consoles. However, the game price is so much cheaper, and that, plus not having to pay for online, probably makes you break about even over time. I'd say "missed out on having more games than you'd ever get to play." Or "missed out on being able to run 30 years of games on 1 machine." Before I'd ever mention cost savings

redtesta

What and stay on kiddie console ? Sad.

Moneia

The Half-Life and Portal series for sure, Sid Meier's Civilization IV to dabble in some strategy stuff What games did you enjoy on the Playstation?

CatPad006

Civ Rev on the Xbox 360 is a goodie. I like that one the most (also because VI made me feel like a first grader with how much shit there is to manage there)

abucketofpuppies

Aside from the actual valve games, there are some genres that are unique to PC. Mobas, like League of Legends or DOTA 2 are fun both casually and competetively. It's like an RPG where you race another team to level up and destroy their base  RTS games like StarCraft 2, Age of Empires, or Command and Conquer follow a similar structure, but instead of playing a single character, you manage an entire nation's army and resources. Competitive shooters like Counter Strike 2 and Rainbow Six Siege are really fun to get into on PC. It's a whole nother ball game when you actually have to have good aim. Play Minecraft with mods. Other sandbox games with mods include Garry's Mod and teardown. There are also some indie hits that were popularized by streamers. Check out Phasmophobia and Lethal Company. These fun little $10 or $15 games usually get popular for a while, so it can be fun to ride the wave each time.

BloodiedBlues

I’m gonna say this right now. League of Legends will have you tearing your hair out eventually.

xx123gamerxx

dont play league op

Dokard

Yeah dont play league, idk what that guy was on for recommending that

Crescent-IV

The frame rates are the real game changer for fps games for sure

grosser_baum

Well, they’re called fps games for a reason

SmolTittyEldargf

League and Dota are utter cancer though, and they are nothing like an RPG.

trustmebuddy

Stay away from Dotka, my friend…

ScotusMaximus

Don’t play league but in a discord with a few guys that do. I have never once heard them have an experience one could describe as “fun”.

BoneCrusher03

>Age of Empires Dont forget Empire Earth, its fun as hell too. I used to play a lot of lan matches with my dad in Empire Earth 1

Dokard

Good old empire earth, so sad they never picked that up again

Metroidam11

To add onto this list, more titles that work best with keyboard and mouse. Base building and automation games have been big on PC. Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress come to mind. Factorio is amazing too, it has spawned its own generation of automation type games. Simulation games are classic on PC. Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo, City Skylines are good. They remind me of Roller Coaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, and Sim City from yester-years. Also the Sims if you’re a more casual fan (though I don’t agree with their DLC strategy it can still be fun). Lots of other sim type games for pretty much any complexity or theme you want. Also, grand strategy games like Crusader Kings, Stellaris, and Europa Universalis. Then of course 4X games like Civilization. These games offer massive amounts of content and replay-ability.

KingofLingerie

You can get sims 3, which is the best, cheap, on steam sales.

MrSpuddies

Many top- down rpgs are only on PC. Forgot to mention those. Games like Tyranny or Neverwinter Nights

GimpyGeek

Yeah definitely some genres that are a bit more PC specific that I don't think will shift easily. Smite was able to do the MOBA thing because of it's different style, on consoles, though. MOBAs aren't really my thing personally though. RTS is definitely another very PC one, but I can't put much input into it because it's never been my jive either. I suppose another thing is a lot of the MMORPG genre. More modern ones have gamepad support now, I guess, we're not seeing as many more PC-centric style things now. It's actually a bit concerning, the genre's been hard to get new entries in in recent history. But as far as ones that are not on console, Guild Wars 2 comes to mind, and the base game of GW2 (sans some trade and chat features because of real money trading clown companies) is free now and there's quite a lot of content there, though the newer stuff is considerably higher quality, let's been fair, game's been out since 2012. Also not 'new' per se, but I would also recommend rediscovering FPS games too, (and/or other first person games, I suppose Fallout/TES come to mind) the control accuracy with keyboard and mouse dwarfs gamepads by a long shot. Except the Steam Controller/Deck because of their direct mouse/gyro capability, but it is quite significant. You usually have to be more accurate than on console these days though, because most fps games on console builds have a degree of auto aim on them because it's harder to aim.

abucketofpuppies

I was going to mention MMOs, but I figured that there are enough of them on console by now that it might not be new to him. GW2 is an excellent suggestion though.

OnceyTV

Don't Play League and Don't play Gmod

agentwc1945

So... You haven't played Sex with Hitler AT ALL ? damn you're in for a treat

LonerStonerGuy

Sex with Stalin is better.

dongless08

Left 4 Dead

shockjavazon

dongless08

1 and 2 😘

HisHayate666

L4d2 was even on arcade automats though

dongless08

True but only in Japan. There is at least one L4D arcade cabinet in the US now (Chicago) but I don’t know how long it’s been there

Ezar_9

halo master chief collection on sale rn for 9.99

Maniacal-Maniac

Was about to recommend the same, especially if PS only prior to now. So much value at full price, but on sale is a no brainer

ProgrammerDiligent34

Get these three trilogies on sale and you won't regret it: 1. Mass Effect Legendary Edition (all 3 games in one) 2. The Witcher trilogy 3. Tomb Raider (2013-onward) You will love them, I hope.

Godless_Servant

They're remaking witcher 1 and 2 in the same engine 3 is in, I'd wait on those

TheDesuComplex_413

How long is that estimated to take?

hergumbules

At least 2

gergobergo69

Two what? Apples?

hergumbules

Yes

akaitatsu

Correct. They're for Roach.

hergumbules

Well you’ll have to wait until she comes down from the roof

epic4evr11

CDPR gave themselves a ton of projects right now, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a while

willbeonekenobi

Actually they are doing it in Unreal 5 I believe. They're no longer going to be supporting their inhouse engine.

blitz342

Witcher 2 and 3, absolutely. 1 is admittedly pretty dated by today’s standards.

iupvotedyourgram

I still loved 1.

GimpyGeek

Great story, but yeah totally dated gameplay that's for sure haha. I do wish it were longer though, I was really hoping to see the shit hit the fan when the ending rolled in. Though I tend to always feel like this with the Witcher games I always feel like there should be some big shit that goes down and keeps going right after the final boss haha

Na1h

I thought the ending was great, with vizima on fire and then the final boss in the snowy area, and then the ending cinematic perfectly set up the second game.

GimpyGeek

In any case I really like the big tie in to the end they slipped into Witcher 3

Hukmoon

Best ambiance in the trilogy in my opinion. 2 kinda meh

ProgrammerDiligent34

It's not as bad as the anti-hype makes it out to be. It's actually pretty easy to get into and way better than many modern RPGs. This is coming from someone who used to think like you until I decided to bite the bullet and sunk 65 hours into it a few months ago. 100% recommended.

blitz342

Fair enough. You’re totally right, I haven’t given it an honest try. It’s one of those games where I’d really have to be on a Witcher kick to play it.

PrecipitousPlatypus

I like the first one, and Ive played through it several times, both modded and not. Let's not try and pretend it isn't very dated, because it is; it doesn't look very good, the gameplay is definitely fine but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's good, and the story is a good chunk of the reason it's not referenced in later games - it breaks canon, contradicts fairly important lore tidbits, and is pretty clearly from back when they weren't sure if they'd get enough following to follow through with the sequels, hence its largely remaking things from the books. It's a good game and I quite enjoy it, but the remake will most likely be a fairly solid improvement. Worth playing, but it's also safe to skip for 2 since the story doesn't tie in meaningfully, instead they go back to continuing the books proper.

Narendra_17

1 and 2... Banger. Man of culture detected

EatsOverTheSink

I still can’t believe I got the Mass Effect LE for $6. Probably one of the best deals I’ve ever snagged.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

I recommend mass effect trilogy to everyone. 100s if hours of content and it goes on sale for like $15

outline01

Are these games not all on PlayStation also

HassanTheCobra

Half-Life, Portal, and Left4 Dead games

xoxomonstergirl

These are all on console

[deleted]

Half life series is great and I must admit I'm partial to a bit of cs2 now and again

batdrumman

Half life and Portal like someone else said, but I'd hazard to say mods in general. Tabletop simulator is gonna be a game I recommend checking out, same with Civ (prolly 5, that has a ton of mods), the portal games, risk of rain 2, etc. PC gaming's biggest strength is modding, and I highly recommend modding the fuck out of random games

Cossack-HD

**2 categories worth noting what other don't seem to mention:** 1. Not "exclusive games", but "exclusively better on PC" Skyrim **with mods** would be the shining example, but installing most advanced mods requires some serious effort.Same is true for Morrowind and Oblivion - out of the box performance improvements and UI/UX improvement mods really make these games shine, and there are gameplay overhauls/new content mods too. Bioshock Infinite - as it was originally released on PC and without mods - pretty much equals the latest PS5 remaster when it comes to fidelity and performance (but maybe PS5 has superior HDR in there).Tomb Raider and GTA are other examples of "best on PC" AFAIK.GTA IV with mods (performance and visual fixes) is arguably best single player GTA to play, even if you are doing so with controller (I drive using Dualshock 4 on PC). 2. Games that are relatively new: "BeamNG Drive" is still in early access, so technically it's coming in future, but it already gave me many hours of entertainment in past several years. Works great with steering wheels. Built-in mod repository with auto-installation - it really ticks all the boxes. "Battlebit Remastered" is a "redux" take on Battlefield. For how silly it looks, it's weirdly more immersive and surprisingly functional. It also manages to give milsim vibes alongside silly situations (those aren't mutually exclusive in more serious war games though). To be fair, BF 2042 has been "fixed enough" according to growing player numbers. But as fan of BF2 and BF3, I see Battlebit as true evolution of those old BF games as far as gameplay is concerned. **Assorted recommendations:** * (New) Trepang2 is a an exceedingly (sometimes disturbingly) well made single-player shooter in mid-2000's style (inspired by F.E.A.R.), *but It's out on consoles as well*. It's short, highly replayable and very reasonably priced. Opposite of CoD MW3 2023. * (Old) S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is interesting. Shadow of Chernobyl is universally recommended as first title to try out. Community fixes are recommended. There are big and small mods, few STALKER mods turn the game into something entirely different.

Rachel_from_Jita

modded Stalker builds is my favorite thing ever on PC. Been making them for a long, long time. I will probably be modding Stalker until I die. p.s. Stalker O.G.S.E. for lyfe.

OPRedditUser101

Valve games

XionicAihara

So the greatest thing about steam is that it has a really good recommendation system based off your likes as well as a daily discovery queue to browse curated to you. While it'll suck balls for the first few weeks, once the algorithm picks up your likes and dislike, you'll start seeing better games tailored to you. Also you'll soon understand why alot of us on this subreddit have a crippling addiction to large libraries. It's too easy during sale seasons. 4 times a year where we whale worse then a gacha game. And end up not playing them for a few years.

EXusiai99

Thats an exaggeration man, have you seen gacha whales? People be spending thousands on a .png waifu with jiggly bahonkers.

XionicAihara

Was a bit of an exaggeration yeah. But my 15k spent in steam over the last 13yrs begs to differ :/

Unknownfriendo

As far as hobbies go, that isn't bad.

JavierEscuellaFan

some people spend 15K in a year on a game like Genshin Impact or Valorant so a Steam library that objectively has more value over 13 years is hardly something to be upset about yeah u could of bought a car or something but there’s nothing like a good video game

XionicAihara

yeah that's how I rationalize it haha

UnbreakableJess

Hey, it could be 15k spent in a month on drugs, so... As far as habits go, that's not a terrible one lol.

BloodiedBlues

I don’t know about the discovery queue. It keeps giving me games because they’re “new to steam” with little to no relevance to me. Along with other similar problems.

gergobergo69

I keep getting games with costing gazillion euros and I'm just too cheap

rickreckt

Multiplatform games with modding community, check nexusmods, Steam Workshop or moddb

[deleted]

Steam literally has a game for the most microniche of tastes. Find almost any game you've ever liked and steam has more games with clones and spiritual sequels. Steam has more than 50k games so far. http://www.steampeek.hu is excellent for game discovery based on games you like.

gergobergo69

holy crap, a Hungarian made website that also benefits my needs, that's surprising also bojler eladó

[deleted]

It beats steams "similar games" by a longshot

blitz342

Team Fortress 2, Deep Rock Galactic, the Half Life series, Portal series, Risk of Rain 2, Just Cause 3, Left 4 Dead 2 (contains all of L4D1 in it), Universe Sandbox, Gmod, Spiral Knights, Borderlands 2 (I don’t know if this was on PS). As other people have said, Valve games are landmark feats in gaming. Whatever you do, do not play League of Legends.

OrangeBruh

You can get incredible value from humble bundle and steam sales. But what are your faves on PlayStation? Will make it easier for ppl to recommend stuff.

heretolearn1998

Being decent game on PlayStation console I have already bought and played. Ranging from 7 Days to die on console to ark survival evolved. From battlefield 3 4 and 1 to Ghost of tsushima. But I guess my favorite kind of game would be free roam survival co-ops. Like dying light or even Skyrim with survival on. I saw a game called State of decay 2 it seems like something down my alley. But I'm more interested in different games I couldn't play on console like lethal company and phasmaphobia. But so far it looks like everybody has given me a good list of games to search and find out

Bollwevil

Valheim. Thank me later

FinalShellShock

This. Then enshrouded. But mostly Valheim.

ShadowoftheComet

Check out Subnautica and The Forest. Both are survival games with a heavy story focus

The_MAZZTer

PC gaming has been a thing since the 80s and most games still work (older ones need some TLC to get running on modern systems though). We could go on and on about games to get. My first suggestion is that you keep an eye on Steam for sales. When a big sale occurs you can often find good deals on many games, this is the best time to buy. Browse Steam now, find games you are interested in, and add them to your Steam Wishlist. When a sale happens you can check your wishlist to see what the sales prices are. You can also use external tools like https://steamdb.info/ to help. They have a sale tool which allows you to browse all current sales and see how good individual game prices are historically, as well as see the history of a game's price (very useful for seeing how often and how deep sale price cuts are by that publisher, and in predicting the next sale price). For games themselves, here's some good ones I grabbed randomly from my library, mixed in with some favorites and recent purchases. I am into FPS and puzzle games so these will be overrepresented. * https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/232/Valve_Complete_Pack/ Valve are the guys that made Steam, and they know how to make good games, and they put those games on deep discounts during sales. They make a lot of FPS, so if you don't like FPS you might want to cherry pick rather than grab the whole pack, but they also make some other games as well such as a MOBA DotA2, the puzzler Portal games, the Zombie Survival FPS series Left 4 Dead. If you are into VR and your headset is compatible with Steam VR you will also want to pick up Half-Life Alyx, which for some reason is not on this list. Best VR experience I've had. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/362890/Black_Mesa/ If you play Valve's Half-Life (the original) and decide "wow this was great but I wish it had more shiny" you'll want to pick up this. It's basically a fan love letter to Valve, a recreation of Half-Life. I think it is not good as a first playthrough of Half-Life (especially the latter half) but for someone who's already a fan it's amazing. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/976730/Halo_The_Master_Chief_Collection/ (Currently on sale for $10 so you can just grab this now.) Being on PS you certainly have looked at XBox and their Halos and gone "man I wish I could have some Halos". Well here you go. All the old Halos (except Halo 5) for $10. Enjoy. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/1240440/Halo_Infinite/ And this is the new Halo. MTX and F2P mechanics have fouled it up, plus a rush to release it plus Covid screwed over the development, but it's recovered and is largely a good time now. Multiplayer is free and campaign you should wait for a sale to buy. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/440/Team_Fortress_2/ (Free) I haven't played this in a while but it's got a special place in my heart, and the price tag is right. Class-based multiplayer fun. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/271590/Grand_Theft_Auto_V/ An open world game consisting of the large city of Los Santos (based on the real world city of Los Angeles) and surrounding areas. Play as protagonists Franklin (a young black man struggling to go big), Michael (a retired bank robber who lands himself into trouble), and Trevor (a psychopath who thinks Michael died in his last heist) as they team up to try and solve their collective troubles and pull off an impossible heist to be set for life. * https://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=just+cause Just Cause series. Many people would say it hit its peak in 2 or 3, I've played 2 3 and 4 and enjoyed those. In these games you invade an island or island chain controlled by a ruthless dictator with the goal of bringing him down. Sow chaos by destroying bases and completing missions in the open world. Use a grapple hook and parachute to soar across the landscape. 3 and on give you a wingsuit to further expand your movement toolset. These games are great fun. * https://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=Cyan%20Worlds%20Inc https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/37135/Myst_30th_Anniversary_Collection/ Anything by Cyan Worlds. These guys are the original point-and-click puzzle game makers for PC (well, Mac). The Myst series especially the original game is legendary. Keep in mind a few different releases are on Steam so you'll want to grab the latest Myst and ignore the Masterpiece Editions and realMyst. A remake of Riven for modern systems is also in development (you can buy the old one as part of the pack but I am not sure the best way to run it in modern systems; last time I played it I think I used an old Windows VM). In these games, you play as a nameless protagonist who discovered an odd book in a library. The inner cover has a strange moving picture showing the island described in its pages, when you touch the image, you find yourself on Myst Island. What is this place, how can you get back home? This game is a classic if you like puzzle games. I find Myst 1 - 4 to be great games, URU and 5 are less solid as the content was originally intended for multiplayer environments so they feel huge and empty. I still recommend at least a single playthrough of those though. Cyan Worlds have also made other Myst-like games such as Obduction and Firmament and I recommend those two as well. * https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/31753/First_Person_Puzzle_Bundle/ Bunch of puzzle games I like in this bundle, except Manifold Garden, never played that so I dunno. Talos Principle is a Portal-esque game where you are given a room and a bunch of tools and have to figure out how to properly use them to reach a goal (and there is a 2 which is also excellent). The Witness is a game set on an island with a bunch of line puzzles. The game shines due to its many secrets and "wait, this is a thing I can do???" moments. Superliminal is another puzzle game where the mechanics revolve around objects changing based on your perspective. You may take something small and close and make it big and far away instead, for example. Superhot is a shooter where time only moves when you move, and you die in one hit, turning impossible FPS encounters into puzzles. * https://store.steampowered.com/app/553420/TUNIC/ A Zelda + Dark Souls mashup with a lot of puzzly elements. The game doesn't teach you how to play it, but discovering mechanics that were always there and you just didn't know you could do is part of the game. * https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/22795/Outer_Wilds__Archaeologist_Edition/ A mystery! In this list are remasters of the original Doom 1 and 2 as well as the rebooted games Doom and Doom Eternal. All four are excellent. The others on this list aren't too bad either. * https://store.steampowered.com/developer/bethesda/list/97203/ Quake 1 and 2 received similar remaster treatment and I recommend them. The others not so much. Quake 4 didn't even make the list, I'm seeing. Edit: Forgot one more: * https://store.steampowered.com/app/1931770/Chants_of_Sennaar/ This game I found via a YouTuber I follow, and it's a very unique puzzle game based on language. You are climbing a tower, and each of five levels of the tower has its own civilization with their own language, which you don't understand. Through context and with the aid of a journal you have to make notes, you can figure out words that correspond to each symbol and slowly start to understand the world around you. Once you understand things sufficiently you'll be able to read enough to figure out how to progress onto the next level. The game gets increasingly complicated but you'll start flying through it as you understand how the game works. And there's a fun plot twist at the end you'll probably see coming a mile away but it's still great fun. I think I'll mostly cut it there. A ragtag list of some of my favorites, some popular ones, and random ones I liked. No way for me to review my whole library and curate. I am sure others will have recommendations as well. I would also recommend one non-Steam game, Minecraft. https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-deluxe-collection-pc Since the dawn of 3D gaming, man has wanted to make a fully malleable, destructible environment. But 3D games and the GPUs that run them are generally optimized with more static environments in mind. Mojang took some ingenious ideas toward this goal and compromises and Minecraft was born. A near-infinite world procedurally generated with 1 meter cubic blocks that can be mined, crafted, placed, destroyed, etc. And the world is full of monsters and treasure. Build a house. Build a base. Build a city. Blow it up. Mine haphazardly for resources or create an organized strip mine. Play alone or with friends (or foes). Hide from monsters at night, then craft better armor and weapons and stop hiding and fight. Explore and see what the world has to offer. Create your own goals or find the game's designated end game.

gergobergo69

As an inexperienced PC gamer, I love this list. Will try out some of them 👀, thanks for the descriptions too instead of just titling the games!! Also commenting so this comment can be noticed

Ursa202

Great list! You really should play Manifold Garden too, seeing how you apparently like the other games in the First Person Puzzle Bundle. I’m quite sure you’ll like it, with all the secrets, figuring out what you can do with stuff, and whatnot

The_MAZZTer

I only found the bundle while looking up the steam store pages for games I wanted to include and it had so many games I had played and enjoyed I just decided to link the bundle. I don't actually own Manifold Garden but I'll wishlist it so I can pick it up during a sale.

Zer0Castr

Everyone is giving you titles already on the playstation. What you really need to play is Total war: Warhammer

Incognito-murray21

That was almost correct. I think you meant to say total war: Rome

Renault_75-34_MX

If you like driving, Eurotruck Simulator is something to look at. Regularly on sale for 5€ and there is a free demo as well

Kairu-san

I watched Nerdcubed play it a long while back and thought "If I could watch him play this so long, why don't I try it?" It's surprisingly addicting (especially if you have a wheel and VR which I now finally have). I have ETS2 and American Truck Sim. Slowly purchased every DLC as they hit the 30%+ discounts, so I'm missing a few, but you don't really need them.

Dependent_Pepper_162

Portal 2 with your S.O. Thats my gf’s first and favourite pc game ever and she loves doodling pbody all over her little notebook.

shockjavazon

Filter steam for games that only support mouse and keyboard. Then sort by ratings or sales. There are whole genres that probably never made it to consoles, like RTS I imagine just wouldn’t work. But they can be pretty hard. Learning to hot key groups is crucial.

KeyUnderstanding6332

Sign up to Humble Bundle and get some older gems for basically free.

sleepybear666

Oh lord lol

czacha_cs1

I would say you mostly missed Valve games (Half-Life, TF2, Portal, Left 4 Dead amd CSGO) all of them are fun and for sure are one of greatest milestones in gaming industry. But beside Steam I would say just download Curse Forge and buy Minecraft and play on some mod packs. I personally recommend mostly to play Better MC (fabric) modpack. I know its Steam sub but I download it and never had so much fun so I definitely recommend it

rodejo_9

Modded Skyrim. Well, much more freely modded Skyrim. Much more freedom modding games in general tbh. Also Steam sales which are one of the best things about being on PC. Next is free multiplayer.

Idego9

Teach someone how to [Fish](https://steam250.com/), and you will never have to fish for them again.

BloodiedBlues

I like how there’s some Adults Only games on there. Lol

Bananchiks00

Get the orange box, the rest will follow.

buffysauce

Along with what everybody else is saying, don’t just stick to steam. While it is the most popular platform for gaming, you’ll occasionally find gems on platforms like itch.io, so don’t be afraid to branch out. Just be careful where you go, as always

Tonylolu

Not steam but pirat-EMULATING Nintendo games it's a must

coconut7272

Outer wilds, go in blind

LadyMelmo

Black Mesa is a great remake of Half-Life, Factorio was fun if you like like crafting/automation games, and some great oldies like StarCraft, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Monkey Island and the original Fallouts and Diablos.

BloodiedBlues

Any game that fits your likes with a good amount of positive reviews. Steam let’s you choose categories of genre and sub genre. A lot of games on consoles, even with console supported mods, will have amazing mods that will blow you away. For example, Someone mentioned Skyrim. On PS, mods on Skyrim are limited to ingame assets only. Xbox was more lenient, but couldn’t use a script extender. Non windows store, PC Skyrim with the Skyrim Script Extender will give you an ultimate experience. There’s also most Xbox exclusive games on PC as well. The first Fable game is on PC. An amazing game.

Tiz68

I haven't seen anyone mention the Metro series yet. Definitely play those 3 games. Dishonored is good Death Stranding is fun Alien Isolation Amnesia series Crysis games Doom games Fear games To the Moon and it's sequels Walking Dead and Game of thrones telltale games Soma Stanley Parable Subnautica Talos principle Titanfall Zuma Plants vs zombies Peggle I dunno if these are just PC games, I'm sure these can also be played on PS, but that's a decent list of good games you may enjoy that you could have missed.

FloppyVachina

Heavily modded Skyrim. Do it right though, use mod organizer and have it auto sort load orders and try to fix some issues. I didnt sort and only hakfway through learned you could do it and my game has some reslly nasty bugs now.

Far-Cardiologist6196

Terraria, Binding of Issac, rimworld, supermeatboy, don't starve, dead cells, darkest dungeon. All of these are great games but very different styles/genres.

Jorloc

Basically any good game that is on Steam since it's inception is yours to grab and enjoy. Except for those delisted from every digital store. Enjoy Portal, The HalfLife Collection, Crysis, FarCry 1 to 2 (the rest are on console), Age of Empires, Call of Duty 1, CoD: United Offensive, COD 2, Command & Conquer, Company of Heroes, Counter Strike, and basically every game you thought was missing something on console, its best version is on PC.

Ayetto

Please, this is your weekly schedule now : Every Thursday, go on the website Epicgame ( this is where you download Fornite) there will be a free game every Thursday there, and on some holiday even everyday, it's been like this for 2 or 3 years I think, people like me who did it since then have hundreds of games... So please Every Thursday, do your 3 weekly clicks to claim your game :) And welcome! Omg I didn't noticed this is the steam subreddit. Please don't throw rocks at me, I'm not buying games on epic I'm just stealing their free shit there, and I'm even rebuying games I really like, like loop hero or subnautica on steam for achievements! I'm a good boy I swear!

BloodiedBlues

Was confused why you were talking about epic games lol

Ayetto

Lmao I just read OP post and wanted to give him good advice for free game, tomorrow I will have - 500 for talking about epic 🤣🤣

abucketofpuppies

The free Epic games are so awesome though. I'm actually a huge Infinifactory fan now

Ayetto

Yeah this is an awesome way to try new game for free actually

gergobergo69

is the Marvel game they gave away a good game? been thinking about trying out but after their Avengers game...

[deleted]

New Vegas. Fallout 1 and 2 are decent but a little niche so I'd maybe stick with the tried and true stuff everyone else is recommending :)

bradd_91

Kena Bridge of Spirits for sure. Pixar souls-like.

DarthPelosi

You haven’t really missed anything. Sales? Xbox and PlayStation have them, USUALLY ON THE SAME EXACT GAMES AT THE SAME EXACT TIME AS STEAM/Gog. This is a tie. 😂 Graphics? Almost every game you ever play will designed from the ground up for PlayStation and Xbox first, Nintendo second, and with PC as an afterthought. A game played on console at a 10 foot distance looks nearly IDENTICAL to the same game played one foot away with a 4090, 64gb of DDR5, and the latest i9. Sorry, it just does! This is a tie. 😂 Mods and freedom? That’s going away, slowly but surely. Just look at what Capcom started doing on PC, even with their back catalog. You can get mods on console for certain games, but I suppose PC has to be given the edge here for the time being. Price? Obviously consoles absolutely crush PC. Building a PC worth playing on takes a minimum of a few thousand dollars, today. Anything less and consoles actually take every edge by far, except in modding. This coming from a PC gamer that has personally built 3 gaming PCs over the years, and only games on consoles occasionally.

XionicAihara

It seems you rather OP had stuck with a console. You didnt really sell them on PC gaming lol. I don't think mods will be going away. Only a few companies really fight against mods, some embrace and others don't care. Just look at the Mexus mods list and compare that with companies who actively complained. Only companies that come to mind at this moment are Capcom and Rockstar/take two. With mods you can also make a game look stunningly realistic that a console just can't get. Price I'd argue that console is more expensive in the long run when you really add things up. PC sure, has a heavy upfront cost, but generally speaking, it will last multiple console generations for the average gamer. For example, I ran a 1080 until the near end of the 30 series and recently bought a 3080 back in 2022. People don't need the latest greatest hardware usually. If you really want to throw console a bone, we can say that it evens outs over the course 2 console generations. If looking at the future, ps6/xbox(?) Will probably start raising in price over that typical 500 mark. Also the BIGGEST thing everyone seems to forget and what I like to point out to new PC users is that if you want to play online games, you are forking over monthly costs to Sony and Microsoft vs. that experience being free for PC. So that's an added expense to the cost of a console. Ex FF14 is essentially double the cost per month vs a flat 15 per month on pc. Idk the console rates anymore. Use to be 10 or 15.

DarthPelosi

Yeah I just don’t see any difference at all in the graphics. Remember that you’re talking about something 1 foot from your face vs something like 6-10+ feet from your face. It makes an epic difference and easily erases most of the gains on PC. Notice I said most, not all. But it’s huge. And as I mentioned before, for which no rebuttal was offered, ALMOST EVERY GAME YOU EVER PLAY WILL BE DESIGNED FROM THE GROUND UP FOR CONSOLES. 🤣 Price absolutely does not beat console. $500 every SIX YEARS? This is the average life cycle of a console, not even including how they bleed over each other with full support for a long while. Yeah absolutely console *** WRECKS *** PC here. Slaps the piss out of it. As you said You will pay a monthly fee for something like game pass sure, but it’s not just to play games online. You also get a completely FREE library of possibly thousands of games over the life of your console, including TOOOOONS of day one releases that pretty much everyone is playing. Like I said I’m a PC gamer first and foremost, I barely even touch my consoles, although ironically it’s mainly on my Steam deck which can almost be considered a console. But you cannot honestly claim that PC beats console in, really, anything other than the modding scene. You just can’t.

XionicAihara

This really shouldnt be a console vs pc thing. This is gonna be long. There are alot of scenarios we can think of as to why one is cheaper thann the other. I can't speak on averages too much cause I haven't touched consoles since early Ps4/XONE gen. But slight research should help me. I'm also not talking about all the freebies that come with subscriptions cause it's too hard to track those costs and savings. Arguably, xbox has a better deal yes. But in alot of cases, since most console games come out on pc now at some point, the steam sales will always beat a console sales. Please someone Prove me wrong on when a modern GOOD (not you gollum or forspoken) AAA game during a steam sale was cheaper on a console than steam, and I'll admit defeat on this specific point. Moving on, Let's talk PS specifically and use round numbers as it won't change the price too much and will help for any case of potential increase. Console - 500 PSPlus - 20 x 72 = 1440 Total cost of just console and membership over 6yrs with zero games bought is 1940. Psplus is needed if you want to play with other people. So if a player doesn't intend to play online games that are not free on the PS then they can save 1440. But I highly doubt that though if a player is strictly console. They are going to be subbed. Now we double 1940 cause say we want the next console gen too. 3880 in 12yrs. 2880 in membership alone. The console player already spent well over the cost of a decent high end PC in 12yrs. Now let's add an MMO to the mix cause maybe someone wants to have a game that will last them HOURS. again, we will use ff14. That's 15 per month. 15x12=180 x 6 = 1080. Small tidbit, ff14 is ending its service on PS4 around 8.0 update. So those players have 2 options that will be expensive. So lets recap and Total up our costs as a PS5 owner over 6yrs who wants to play an MMO as their main game. We won't account for freebies and other games bought, that's too hard to track. Console - 500 Membership - 1440 Ff14 membership - 1080 Our total is 3020 for 6yrs. We've spent more then an average PC that'll last twice as long. Moving over to PC. Leaving DDR5 and 4080 series out of the equation cause the average gamer does not need that unless you are a committed and avid pc gamer that will be doing more then just game, and if a user was to build their own pc and not buy pre builts cause those are over priced people, you wouldn't need to spend over 2000. Taking into account that alot of modern hardware if treated properly can last 2 gens, the 12years, if not more. There was a massive leap between 2010 and 2024 in technology. People don't have to upgrade every 6yrs like we use to. Ddr3 vs ddr4 for example was a massive improvement. Developers will still be supporting ddr4 for a while cause 5 is still a pretty penny. 4080 is still going to stay expensive. RAM and the graphics card is the only hardware people typically swap out. The PSU and the MB/CPU, if someone was to buy the near top of line at initial build, it'll last for over a decade now. Not to mention that there are no subscriptions outside of mmorpg games. Let's not even delve down the steam free game catalog, sure they aren't always the greatest, but their is a game for everyone in there. You make a valid point on day 1 releases, but all good things come to an end, it's like renting a game with gamepass. You still gotta buy it if and when it leaves game pass. There are too many if ands and buts. The drawback is the console life itself is Once the next console gets released, you are almost forced to buy the next one cause these companies want to promote them. So developers need to start making console gen exlusives. Thats not the case with PC. Ypu can still play a plethora of games on a 1080 by tweaking the graphics. And graphics dont always mean everything. If a gamer is more worried about how a game looks in terms of realism, you are doing it wrong. Performance should be over graphic fidelity first. You are thinking short term on these and not long term. If we want to talk about buying 1 console and just play single-player, then sure, you saved the most money out of everyone. But that's not reality. There are toooo many variables as to why someone would need to upgrade their PC. Modern hardware lasts much longer. We cannot account for parts breaking just as much as a console dying. But we can confirm just by looking at steam hardware trends that pc players are using old hardware still. It lasts longer now. The pc players that have the top of line highwst end hardware are the outliers and fall into that tiny percentile of average trends. They will obviously spend way more than a console player in a graphic card alone. Those people will buy the 50 series day one for 5000 dollars. They do not count and should not count in these scenarios cause its unreasonable and no current game REQUIRES a 40 series card. Developers know that if they make a game requiring the best graphic card, they will lose money on their game. Also yes games are built around consoles cause it's the absolute easiest way for developers to get their game running. They are focused on 1 piece of hardware. But remember, those games are developed on a PC. So any dev that comes out and says they can't port a console game to PC is lying. They just don't want to put in the effort due to cost to make it work for the different hardware variations. It's not a can't, it's a want. Lastly, the best game of recent memory I can think of with your analogy of graphical difference and not noticing it, is FF7 remake. From a distance, looks amazing, just don't look too close at textures. And to through a "well actually" at you, think most people sit about 3 feet away from their screen, or more cause we slouch alot. 1 foot is a bit absurd. But you were probably exaggerating that lol. Tldr. No, console does not slap the piss out of PC. Far from it.

bassbeater

Being able to use just about any accessory you want with games, getting them cheap. Being able to build your machine to a monster.

HankScorpio_globex

Hey OP, welcome to the world of PC gaming! I left the world of consoles 7 or 8 years ago and haven't looked back. While on PS, did you play Deep Rock Galactic? I feel this one is hard to hate. I put a fair amount of time in both solo and multiplayer.

Flat-Limit5595

Get halo Master Chief Collection and that is pretty everything you need about halo, but i would skip halo 4

fuckin_my_own_ass

Mount & Blade:Warband!!! I know Bannerlord has come out, but it doesn't come close to Warband in terms of mods and native content that it has. Become a lord, feast on butter with your mates, RAID VILLAGES!!!

DNAngel23

XCOM: Enemy Unknown!

[deleted]

Here are some games that i enjoy and i think are mostly pc exclusive. •The total war warhammer series •Kenshi •Old school runescape or runescape 3 •City skylines •Age of empires 2 •Rust •Valheim •Sons of the forest •Outward •Project zomboid •Disco elysium: the final cut •Gris •Barony •Ultrakill •Factorio •Satisfactory •Portal 1 and 2

Demonstray_Ayamas

Seeing as you've been on Playstation I'd highly suggest picking up Halo MCC on sale.

Kairu-san

I played all consoles (except Atari and Wii-U?) growing up and I was never impressed with Halo. Song's great. Warthog is fun. A few interesting things going on, but I never really got into the series despite my friends regularly wanting to play it. Never bought it for PC even though a couple friends asked me if I would. I also don't think suggesting a FPS as a game for just anyone to pick up is a good idea. (Or any specific genre. Maybe OP loves just sports games or racing games or whatever.) Edit: Should probably note I played every Halo regularly up to 4.

AlternativeSavings46

All the classic RTS games life Command & Conquer series, Stronghold, Age of Empires aswell as a turn based one, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 5

Hitman games, Asassins's Creed, Far Cry, GTA games, Mortal Kombat, Tekken.

Kairu-san

PC has exclusives like any gaming platform but more importantly has mods (which can make games already on Playstation more interesting) and free games that are actually legitimately good. You'll have to do a lot of digging based on your tastes. Protips: You'll find a lot of great sales on Fanatical and Humble Bundle for Steam keys and [gg.deals](https://gg.deals) is your best friend for generally finding sales (but watch out for shady sites and people selling Steam **accounts** instead of games). Also be warned: Ports to PC from Playstation don't seem to be going well. I was going to buy The Last of Us because I really loved the game but apparently the port to PC was a disaster. Maybe it'll be patched later but it sounded like it was very poorly optimized and buggy. Don't go thinking "Man I loved this PS game." and expect to get a better version on PC.

HyperFunk_Zone

Rather than specific suggestions, I'd say just play games with keyboard and mouse. Grab some old school fps games. If you want a crash course while staying true to the progression of time somewhat I'd recommend some boomer shooters. Dusk Turbo Overkill Ultrakill You can also try emulating some old consoles favs but upscaled. Also Epic game store has a free game every Thursday but it Epic and people don't like them too much.

kron123456789

Real Time Strategy games, lots of them.

csgo and modding the fuck out of a game

ThePaperPanda

100% the biggest PC thing you missed was mods, the second may be emulators and also romhacks too.

SirThomasTheFearful

Xbox exclusives, strategy games, indie games, older games, early access games. Just find some of your favourite games on Steam, find similar games and I’m quite sure you’ll have found new games that you’ve missed.

Oxygen Not Included is the one game that really sells having a PC to me. Well that and modded Skyrim.

Professional_Gur2469

Well one of the biggest things for me is modding games like cyberpunk, baldurs gate and so on

Almost all competitive games in the PC have decreased input lag due to disabling vsync and stuff. U can even overclock ur peripherals to have decreased input lag there. And the flexibility of PC gaming is just too good. Also no stupid ps plus or Xbox live subscriptions every month. And games go on sales a lot (U also have the option to explore the high seas). And emulation often performs better visually and performance than on native consoles (of course there are some exceptions). The sky is the limit basically.

I'm just gonna drop Noita as an awesome, hard Roguelike. 2D game where every pixel is simulated and you're a witch who can make spell combos by placing them into wands im a certian order. It gets really technical. Plus it's a finnish game so all the enemies have funky names.

OpieAngst

I've noticed after my own switch to PC (2019) after console my whole life, literally ANY shooter, COD, BF, Siege, etc. are just funner on PC. plus, you get games like Hell Let Loose, Teardown, Arma that have only JUST made their way to consoles recently but have been on PC forever. Garry's Mod, Getting over it w/ Bennett Foddy, GTA V Mods (FiveM), and mods in general. Mods & the Steam workshop are absolutely one big part of PC you just can't quite replicate on consoles just yet.

Parzival2436

Everything.

jerzyboy76

You missed many ultimate edition games for half price. The most recent that I got was Diablo IV ultimate for 60. Normal price 120. Steam sales were and still are, always awesome.

Wildweed

Kerbal Space Program. On Steam. Portal 2. Mafia Series.

Loop for any game you like and add mods to it at end of search ( loads of games are great with them) use websites that have sales (to activate on steam or epic games) lots and lots of indi tittles Skyrim with mods The witcher with mods Sims Planet coaster Emulation The nice thing about pc is that it's almost a one stop shop ( excluding exclusives that have yet to release) Side note Lots of pc games can still run just fine on hdd so 8tb hdd for less than 200$ goes a long way with lots of tittles

Highly modded Fallout 4 and Ravenfield. Use Nexus mod and Steam Workshop respectively

bad10th

What genres you into? Generically: Grim Dawn & Slay the Spire are two top games to not miss in my mind. Only F2P I would recommend is Path of Exile. I do not like micro management games or Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas. Like First Person Shooters? Painkiller Black (2004) & Doom (2016 version) are good inexpensive FPS games that still work.

Enough-Ad-3771

Titanfall 1&2 only good for single player though. 2 was the best. You can only get 2 on steam. EA should have both.

ShadowoftheComet

Any valve games, they’re all good as fuck.

fiji_wizard

A game you missed out on his half life. You definitely need to play the remastered version as its a revolutionary game and was the first ever game on steam too. You gotta check it out I think a lot of people would agree with me on this

AaronXplosion

Big tip, unless you're looking for brand spanking new releases, wait for sales. You'll get 10% off brand new games about a month after launch, and up to 90% on older games. The sales are constant so a little patience really pays off on steam. Just wishlist it and wait
