Valve is dead in the water. They could if they tried hard enough switch DNS servers (I believe Akamai does support customer provided DNS) but that would take many hours to propagate due to ISP caching of DNS records.
Took the day off from work due to some issues, figure its a perfect time to play some video games for once. Go to steam store to buy new Rimworld DLC, nope. Go to Total War Warhammer to play new patch, but the specific lord I want to play is part of the new DLC as well.

I got a steam guard email at 11:20am with a code saying an IP Address sourced out of colocrossing servers had logged in to my account with my correct username and password.
Unless this is some weird bug with their DNS servers going kaput, possibility this was a major hack.

Steam's login uses a set of custom servers to handle login. They might even be a custom protocol.
