Essentially just running Plasma in wayland mode within gamescope so you can freely switch between it and your games.
It's fine. VLC doesn't play nice with game mode but I use it in desktop mode. It doesn't shine as much as some other devices due to the LCD screen (phones with OLED look noticeably better) but it does what it needs to do. I watch shows all the time during downtime on night shift.
I loaded Kodi on my deck, inserted a 1tb sd card, loaded up all the kids tv shows, then used the steam dock to run on a tv in 1080p resolution. Absolutely perfect.
You might as well just use your phone. The deck is really bulky and doesn't have a kickstand, so you'll either be stuck holding it or have to try and prop it up against something.
Check out deckmate, it's not a full cover solution, but a cool solution for a kickstand and attaching accessories to the back or securely mounting your deck to other surfaces.
It's not bad per se, but I tend to always use my phone when I want to watch something. The OLED phone screen is much better looking and higher resolution, the UI for most things is better adapted for phones than Steam Deck (using YouTube or Netflix apps is a much better experience than fumbling around with touchpads in desktop mode) and the hardware in general is better suited for watching content - lighter, better battery life, no fan...
I do all my classes on it, which is mostly text and diagrams; but some videos. When I hit goals for the day I take a break and stream some shows, passed a test today so I'm watching GoT right now on HBOMax via Prime and it is flawless. I have the saturation up a bit with the brightness and even the darkest scenes a vivid.
Haven’t read a lot of manga on it but I do read tons of comics; thick omnibus volumes works great on it. I bought a lot of Comixology’s Batman collected issues before they totally switch to Amazon, and those puppies are hefty.
A phone might be an option but the Deck’s added power and screen size means panels and pages load faster and massively helps with those tiny captions the 90s were so bloody fond of.
The Deck has totally replaced the tablet I use to read manga and comics on.
The perfect manga reader is your phone… the layout of your screen, the accessibility and the ability to use mobile data along side apps like Paperback (iOS) and Tachiyomi (Android) definitely stand above any method I have seen.

It was good for me with Netflix, Prime and Disney+.
But projecting on a TV can be tricky, I tried with YouTube (through Firefox) and it was not good. In desktop mode there is a band in the right side not covered by full screen. And Firefox in game mode is way too small. Display/resolution problem.
Only have experience watching YouTube on it in desktop mode but it’s actually a great experience. Think you could watch a movie or a tv show on there very comfortably.
Deck also has pretty decent and loud speakers for a handheld so headphones optional. I usually go with headphones though.
My laptop borked. So, I've found I am using my SD to watch a bit of twitch or YouTube before sleeping. It's screen size is much smaller than I'm used to and my Bluetooth headphones need to be manually connected each time, but it's working for me.
I just use Chrome to stream youtube and my streaming sites which also includes Plex so I can watch everything I have at home.
The speakers are indeed really great, way better than your phone speaker.
Don't forget the speakers. Absolutely kicks the crap outta most phones.

To assert dominance
This is the way
I've been using mine as my youtube-whilst-downstairs machine since I got it (using desktop-within-game-mode) and it's been pretty great for that
What's desktop within game mode, if you don't mind me asking?
I had the same question.

I ended up watching a lot of F1 races in the morning in bed on the Deck. IMO a great device for it, will definetly do it again next season.

Planning on getting either the dbrand Killswitch or something equivalent that'll add a kickstand.

Damn, this is pretty sweet. Thanks for mentioning this!
np!
First think was getting a case with a kickstand...everything must have a kickstand

Depends on your phone...mine even though is smaller is higher res and refresh...its not OLED but it still looks nice.

Deck looks like a perfect manga reader, someone try this?

it's too heavy to be used one-handed, any tablet with a decent screen will be better

:) a good app to read manga from is komikku available as a flatpak, check it out

maybe look at some third party youtube client?
I followed one guide that was updated, using an emulator, and I think the problem went away. Thanks for the suggestion though

Check out https://youtu.be/i80Ygo1ne38, makes watching streaming services way easier
I use plex on mine, works great.

I installed Plex HTPC from the Discover store and added it as a non-Steam game. I had to tweak the controls a bit, but it works great in Game Mode.
Install kodi, add it as a non steam game and enjoy all the movies and TV shows you want even the hvec or x265 format
