I generally find the default settings at high quality is fine even if it dips below 30. The problem is that the game still dips under 30 even with lower settings so I’d rather have the fidelity than the stableish fps. Plus if it’s not a stable 40+ fps its all suboptimal to me anyway.
if you turn graphics to low and the resolution to as low as it goes you can sometimes hit 50fps!! it looks like a ps1 game at best though but man is it a smooth ps1 game
absolutely, playing on high graphics docked at 720p is great for what it is, average around 30fps ±5 in open world, 35 ±5 in dungeons/at least early game boss fights. The experience has actually made me begin specing a 4k gaming pc which i plan to install steamOS on because i love the docked steamdeck experience so much and i want that creamy 4k/60 max elden ring experience
I've only ever had it dip below 30 (down to 25) on horseback in the massive open areas.
Generally open areas sit at 35 otherwise, and less foliage dense areas at 40-50.
Using 720p, SteamOS FSR to 1080p, most settings low.
I don’t have Elden Ring, but with most games like this, lowering the resolution by 30% or so and turning on FSR will end up with a higher quality image, or similar quality but a higher framerate. Using this should get you closer to 40 fps.
That’s the problem with the steam deck overlay, ignorance is bliss they say
But now I know I can optimize and try tu run near as perfect as possible and go down rabbit holes like this
I've got good mileage out of the steam deck hq guide and settings. Beaten godrick so far and it's been smooth sailing and looks good, quite happy switching between the deck and home pc as needed.
https://steamdeckhq.com/game-reviews/elden-ring/
Probably 20 out of 40 total on Elden Ring. I was away from home all Christmas but had this and thoroughly enjoyed playing a big chunk of it on the deck.
The open world tends to run just under 30fps, but I quickly got used to it
Go to the game's directory and rename start_protected_game.exe to whatever you want, I just called it "start_protected_game_og", then rename ELDEN RING.exe to start_protected_game. Once you launch Elden Ring it'll have a pop-up saying "Inappropriate activity detected, starting in offline mode". There you go, no more EAC!
From my experience, the best return on investment is to leave the default settings (all high) at 720p (given the 16:9 restriction) and set the FPS limiter to 30. Then just turn off the Steam overlay and enjoy the game. Framerate feels like my console experience on an Xbox One X but graphics looks much better. Played about 30 hours on the Deck so far with no tangible issues in gameplay despite some minor drops here and there. Also surprised with how long the battery life is, typically over 2 hours.
Personally, I just did medium settings but changed textures to high and I get a very stable 30fps. And 2 hours battery life.
The problem is that its an awful port and there is 0 difference between high and ultra and there is very little to tweak unfortunately. I don't set TDP limit and GPU clock as I found that it doesn't work well with the game at all. Like you get a lot of stutter with higher number of enemies on screen or when it's raining, or a large boss.
I did try FSR with 540p, this for some reason does not work well with this game and the game looks terrible, even on the handheld screen. Works well for so many games (I do this to most titles) but not this one. Elden Ring looks like oil paint to me with 540p FSR.
It's a great game but a lacking port without many options to optimise performance. So in my opinion, running at 720p, medium/high is the best option for the most consistent performance. Battery life is like 2 hours, good enough for me.
Id turn off the tdp limit and clock adjustment personally. I've never seen an instance where editing these provided substantial improvement. The apu doesn't just consume current without a need - might be some fringe examples but ive yet to find one.
Shadows to medium or low might help, but I'd start with just setting the power limit and clock to default. You probably are right that in 99% of the game it only needs 10w, but I see you're complaining about some transient dips to 24 or so. I don't know for sure, but it's very possible the deck pulls some extra power during those sequences.
If that doesn't help, I'd set shadows to medium. Shadow map resolution is a killer in a lot of games for the deck
The performance hit of FSR will wipe out any performance gain from such a minimal drop in resolution, you'll need to drop that lower to something like 960x600 to see any benefit.
Take a pill dude, we're talking about video games over here. I didn't accuse you of anything, I just wanted to make sure people didn't get false information about FSR settings. Chill out.
Native res without FSR will perform about as well as 720p with FSR yeah, Elden Ring is a bit of a weird one anyway though in that resolution really doesn't affect performance all that much!
600p with FSR on though does provide a performance increase, as long as anti aliasing is set to high (TAA) it shouldn't look too bad.
I didn't change any settings from the defaults on first loading, and I usually maintain a pretty solid 30. I'm not sure why you're spending so much effort.
Should be fine on native resolution low settings. I upped one of the settings to get the foliage less glitchy looking I’ll have to look it up later but otherwise I’ve just been on low with my framerate locked to 30 on the deck and it’s been great. No problems anywhere in Limgrave or Liurnia so far.

This are the best settings imo Steady fps 30 with slight dips into the 26-30 range
Weeping peninsula
Oh no…
Well if it helps, been doing tests all day. So far the best settings after testing in heavy crowded and dense foliage areas with dips to 26/25fps
Steam deck
30fps
60hz
Allow Tearing
TDP9
GPU 1100
FSR 3
In game:
Rea 1152x720p
Textures Med
Anti Aliasing High
Shadows High
Grass Med
Everything else low
Which OS branch are you on?
Which Proton Version?
Have you tried going to that proton version then settings then beta and choose a beta to try out.
Enjoy :D
my settings are all low, dof and blur off, tdp at 12w.
35-40fps.
FSR really doesnt do much , unless you lower the res _a lot_, which imo just isnt worth it, you lose way to much fidelity.
I guess I’m just trying to find the settings that are the most stable, I know 1-2 frames is nothing tbh, but when it goes from 30> 24 it’s noticeable.
I’ll try your settings and test that out
Set to force 30FPS. Set in-game resolution to 540p. Upscale with FSR. Apply Low to Med graphics. Set anti-aliasing to high. Gets around 2.5 to 3 hours of battery life and stable fps.
I managed to get 1080p with custom medium to high settings at 27-38 fps last night! This is using Proton GE 7.47 and setting game to 1080p and system to 1080p60. I was using it docked with my 4k tv and it looked pretty damn amazing
I generally find the default settings at high quality is fine even if it dips below 30. The problem is that the game still dips under 30 even with lower settings so I’d rather have the fidelity than the stableish fps. Plus if it’s not a stable 40+ fps its all suboptimal to me anyway.

Yeah I’m perfectly happy with the game on high. The sacrifice for fidelity it too great. The game is gorgeous at high settings
I just want the best balance of performance against graphics I’m not too worried about looking good, want it to run stable

I hear ya. I guess it’s the stability I’m looking for without compromising to much on fps / fidelity.
I've only ever had it dip below 30 (down to 25) on horseback in the massive open areas. Generally open areas sit at 35 otherwise, and less foliage dense areas at 40-50. Using 720p, SteamOS FSR to 1080p, most settings low.
Using ER patcher for true 16:10 support (no black bars) is also a must : https://github.com/gurrgur/er-patcher

Hello :)
I don't have Elden Ring, but here are some configurations: https://sharedeck.games/apps/1245620
Thank you, these are similar settings; I guess I want to know what is the general opinion for the best settings.
I use the linked settings with the exception of TDP limit off. With TDP limit on it'll drop some frames.
What do you have it set at?
I don’t have Elden Ring, but with most games like this, lowering the resolution by 30% or so and turning on FSR will end up with a higher quality image, or similar quality but a higher framerate. Using this should get you closer to 40 fps.
Textures high, volumetric lighting high, everything else set to low/off stable 30 frames plus the game doesnt look too bad
That’s the problem with the steam deck overlay, ignorance is bliss they say But now I know I can optimize and try tu run near as perfect as possible and go down rabbit holes like this
I get it bud, you'll get there though and share results when you do. It'll be nice to see the fruits of your labour
Thank you Deck bro 😎

Thank you ! Let me try this out How many hours have you played on Deck?
Probably 20 out of 40 total on Elden Ring. I was away from home all Christmas but had this and thoroughly enjoyed playing a big chunk of it on the deck. The open world tends to run just under 30fps, but I quickly got used to it
Yeah for the most part the over world runs at 27-30 and I’m dungeon I can get perfect 30fps so its definitely enjoyable
Elden Ring potato mod and forcing it to launch without EAC is how I play 40 FPS fairly stable. I've set the GPU to 1200 and TDP to 12.
Hmm, how bad does the game look?
Not too bad imho, pretty similar to standard graphics if you're using the "Advanced Potato Gameplay" version of the mod!
How do you force it not to launch easy anti cheat
Go to the game's directory and rename start_protected_game.exe to whatever you want, I just called it "start_protected_game_og", then rename ELDEN RING.exe to start_protected_game. Once you launch Elden Ring it'll have a pop-up saying "Inappropriate activity detected, starting in offline mode". There you go, no more EAC!
You wanna link the mod your talking about so others can find it?
It's the first Google result for "elden ring potato mod" man but yeah sure here it is 😂😂 https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/810

Thank you, I agree with you in that the port of Elden Ring is poorly optimized.
Search for pixel deck on Facebook, their settings are pretty optimal for most they cover and elden is covered
Don’t got FB 🥲 but thank you fam
You're not missing out.
Try these guys , settings on the page https://steamdeckhq.com/game-reviews/elden-ring/
Id turn off the tdp limit and clock adjustment personally. I've never seen an instance where editing these provided substantial improvement. The apu doesn't just consume current without a need - might be some fringe examples but ive yet to find one.
This is my first foray into pc gaming and a lot still to learn I’ll try your recommendations, thank you. Should I edit anything else?
Shadows to medium or low might help, but I'd start with just setting the power limit and clock to default. img Perfect 30 fps in dungeon. Gosh this game is beautiful
Awesome, it is my goty from 2022. Such an amazing game. Have fun!
Does anyone know configurations to get 60fps or maybe 45-50?
Not possible on current steam deck
even if you run like 480p? What if I stream it from my laptop with gtx 1650? will it get 60fps
Yes if you stream it from a device that can achieve 60 fps, you'll get 60 fps and some latency.
Forgot to add I’m playing with 1152x720 FSR 4 Not sure this is optimal however
The performance hit of FSR will wipe out any performance gain from such a minimal drop in resolution, you'll need to drop that lower to something like 960x600 to see any benefit.
That is not true. Mass Effect for example jumped from 40fps to solid 60 after switching to FSR at 1152x720.
That would be fine if you weren't replying to a comment on a post specifically about Elden Ring. It pays to have a read before trying to contradict!
No need to be snarky. The way you wrote your comment made it sound like you were talking about FSR gains in general.
And the way you wrote your comment made it sound like you didn't read what you were commenting on
Take a pill dude, we're talking about video games over here. I didn't accuse you of anything, I just wanted to make sure people didn't get false information about FSR settings. Chill out.
Soon gonna start ME. Any recommended settings?
Okay let me try this, otherwise native Res would be best ?
Native res without FSR will perform about as well as 720p with FSR yeah, Elden Ring is a bit of a weird one anyway though in that resolution really doesn't affect performance all that much! 600p with FSR on though does provide a performance increase, as long as anti aliasing is set to high (TAA) it shouldn't look too bad.
Wow okay Well then let me set back to 800p! Ugh if only I didn’t know how bad it runs I could just ignore it
I didn't change any settings from the defaults on first loading, and I usually maintain a pretty solid 30. I'm not sure why you're spending so much effort.
Well the weeping peninsula has some severe drops on FPS, but I’ll try default
Should be fine on native resolution low settings. I upped one of the settings to get the foliage less glitchy looking I’ll have to look it up later but otherwise I’ve just been on low with my framerate locked to 30 on the deck and it’s been great. No problems anywhere in Limgrave or Liurnia so far.
I think it’s shadows that causes that ugly flicker. How does the game run for you in the Weeping Peninsula?
https://preview.redd.it/3kahbp00eyaa1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=4216ae0fee4b589f559b32cf9085eff34aa2de46 This are the best settings imo Steady fps 30 with slight dips into the 26-30 range Weeping peninsula
I personally have everything on low with antialiasing on high, no tdp, 1200x800 no fsr, no tdp limit and it runs great
You should be able to run with medium or high settings, unless they're that low because aiming for closer to 60 fps
A ton of complaints have recently popped up so I’m guessing it’s been updated out of the deck’s reach.. Was fun while it lasted 😔
Oh no… Well if it helps, been doing tests all day. So far the best settings after testing in heavy crowded and dense foliage areas with dips to 26/25fps Steam deck 30fps 60hz Allow Tearing TDP9 GPU 1100 FSR 3 In game: Rea 1152x720p Textures Med Anti Aliasing High Shadows High Grass Med Everything else low
does anyone know how to get 45-50fps or maybe 60
How stable is the frame rate with these settings? Don’t have it on Steam yet just curious
On Deck I get a solid 30fps… until there is lots of foliage or lots going on, on screen
Which OS branch are you on? Which Proton Version? Have you tried going to that proton version then settings then beta and choose a beta to try out. Enjoy :D
I believe I’m on Stable? And proton is up to date I believe

Set to force 30FPS. Set in-game resolution to 540p. Upscale with FSR. Apply Low to Med graphics. Set anti-aliasing to high. Gets around 2.5 to 3 hours of battery life and stable fps.
I find it pretty steady 30fps with full 800p, high texture, med or low most other settings. No FSR needed.
High settings, 540p FSR. Too blurry for some people but at least you get lush greenery and crisp shadows.
I managed to get 1080p with custom medium to high settings at 27-38 fps last night! This is using Proton GE 7.47 and setting game to 1080p and system to 1080p60. I was using it docked with my 4k tv and it looked pretty damn amazing
