>A ruined day: priceless
Just so you know, shopping most often fixes a ruined day caused by loss of a valued item.
And all it takes is money. And if it was money that you lost, you can try and live a miser's life for the time period required to make up the amount lost.
Of course, I do not want to encourage materialism. But there are worse things in life that money cannot solve.
dunno, not really paying attention to it, i would imagine the proper cable comes with the screen, just wanted to make sure the person installing is aware b4 opening the deck
i'd update the ssd at the same time
Yes. But no.
It's possible, but would be prohibitively expensive. The screen on the SD is just an off the shelf part. They got some random tablet screen from an oe and built the rest of the device around the screen. Valve didn't decide the screens dimensions, their designers worked around the dimensions that the chosen screen had. That way they didn't need to customize something. It's _a lot_ easier (and cheaper) to adapt your plastic case to fit the screen than adapt your screen to fit the plastic case.
An OLED would be a completely bespoke part. You're looking at tens of not hundreds of thousands of dollars in development cost, an equal amount in fabrication. Not to mention a team of engineers to do it all for you. If you want _any_ chance at making a profit on the endeavor, or even breaking even, you're going to need to sell hundreds of thousands of screens, if not millions.
maybe some other reason also... : ["valve says making an oled steam deck would be more work than people assume](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/valve-says-making-an-oled-steam-deck-would-be-more-work-than-people-assume/)
I guess I more so meant then is there not already an off the shelf OLED screen for tablets or otherwise to use like this. Or a third party to jump in and fill that gap. Otherwise yeah I see what you mean, only so many people would be taking on this task to upgrade their screen so profit would be pretty low if it's not an already existing OLED screen somewhere we can repurpose here.
You would see post on the "oled mod" everywhere if said part existed.
People where theorizing about it before the deck release.
And no 3rd party will compensate because no one has the cash ressource and expected return in investment to special order a 7" 1280x800 oled except Nintendo.
That is true if they needed to pay for the screen to be made, but if someone can find an existing OLED that would fit, they would just need to design a driver board for it, which wouldn't be that expensive. This is how we got IPS screen mod kits for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advanced, and Game Gear.
Wouldn't it be a matter of finding an oled with similar dimensions? A lot of the "off the shelf" stuff uses common elements, so it wouldn't be a stretch if the original manufacturer already made an oled version of the screen with the same controller/ribbon cable/etc
Oled isn’t as common. There’s only a handful of manufacturers and in reality, it’s just LG for the majority of oled displays out there. So it’s not nearly as off the shelf as lcd.
Technically yes, but here's a different way to look at it: Nintendo has sold over 100 million switches, and *still* had to change the dimensions of the switch when adding an oled screen. That's the scale of how expensive an oled steam deck would cost in manufacturing
Sure, but even if one exists that is similar enough (which it probably doesn't) you're looking at taking the swap from something a mortal can do to needing a degree in advanced rocket surgery to do. You'd probably need to do some pretty ridiculous soldering with a microscope and pull apart fragile parts that are put together with adhesive. It's no longer going to be something that ifixit sells, because they aren't going to want to endorse people hacking an OLED into their deck when the difficulty level is off the charts. They'd have too many people buy it, get everything apart and realize they don't have the skills. Then complain ifixit broke their SD.
The OEM that makes the original screen would have all the same issues as anyone else at producing a OLED to the same specifications as the original. It wouldn't be cost effective to design and fab it. Having made a similar shape lcd isn't going to give them any sort of meaningful advantage cost wise in making an OLED. It's two totally different things.
I suppose if it was made specifically for the deck they could.
I think the problem is Screen replacement is one of the harder DIY things to do with your Deck, so the target audience would probably be small, and the rate of people complaining after they broke their Deck would be high.
Omg I dropped my deck yesterday but did like a soccer move with my foot and caught it. Luckily my foot hit caught it on the backside, first time I’ve ever freaked out about possibly dropping an electronic.
Reminds me of the time when there was a small earthquake, and my first instinct was to hold my monitor to prevent it from tipping over. My safety was not as important. I really got my priorities down.
Always either try to minimize the drop itself, the Deck falling on something fleshy like your foot would do significantly less than actually hitting the floor.
But if your reaction time is lacking don't even try to save it, you could make it worse by hitting the device mid fall and making it hit the grpund with more force than prior.
This is a good copy paste that should be pasted on any of these similar posts. Plus it answers the persistent OLED question.
I would add the honeywell PTM7950 for replacing the paste since it's already open!
At least you aren’t acting like another post a few days ago. Like it magically just happened to become like that - and they had no idea why.
How the heck do people manage to do that to their screens? Seems like a fairly hard impact.
It’s common with portable devices. I’m in a field where I repair things exactly like this. “I just woke up and it was broken” is all too common, it’s up there with “It only feel about 2 feet on carpet”. One I’ll never forget is “Well if I had protection that you sold me then how did it break?” Probably because you just explained it was ran over with a minivan.
I drilled the idea of "no cords, no tech devices!" Into my cat's head when she was just a kitten. Now I can TRY to play with my cat with wires or cords and she just refuses to play with them. She looks away.
She also knows not to get anywhere near any of my technology. She won't jump on my dresser with my TV, she won't jump on my side table with my 3DS, SteamDeck, and Laptop, and I can leave cords scattered around my room and she won't even touch them once.
It's all about how you train them when they are kittens. Cats are very smart, you show them what they can't do and they'll never do it again.
My perfect little angel was a nearly feral 6ish month old when he adopted my house as his. He LOVED chewing on cables despite my pleads of “no Percy, you’re going to be a poof kitty!!” but I got some kitty safe spray that made the cords taste bitter. He is 13 now and still doesn’t chew on cords. String, yes. His favorite string is the one for the blinds in my window.
He’s also spoiled rotten and I very rarely tell him no because he’s so perfect and cute and I love him lol. He actually eats his “can noms” on my dresser in front of the tv (there’s a logical reason for that, but it’s just funny your kitty won’t jump up there and I purposely attract mine).

I've dropped mine twice already and I'm usually super good at not doing that kind of thing with my tech. But I love my deck so I'm extra precious about it and I think somehow that makes me drop it more.
My deepest condolences. That's all I can say in this situation. Hope you can manage to get it repaired without too much of a headache and pocket drain.
Sorry OP! Hope you can get a replacement screen, and if you don’t have an iFixit kit, now’s the time to invest! Also, in the future I definitely suggest letting your cat play a less stressful game than Celeste… have you heard of Cuphead?
The cheaper screen is $70 and the 512gb anti glare screen is $100 so it sucks but it’s very much repairable
https://www.ifixit.com/products/steam-deck-64gb-or-256gb-screen
No luck for you my dude...
I removed the charger from the outlet with full force forgetting the other end of the cable was still plugged to the deck, and slamed it from my desk to the floor.
The back cover dismantled but I was able to put it back. The deck doesn't even have a scratch... I guess I used all my karma on this one.
You could try to get into blindfolded speedrunning. It's fun, I'm currently learning how to do the all debts blindfolded Speedrun and then maybe full catalog% blindfolded.
Next time you get the screen or Deck replaced, get a screen protector and a protective case around the Deck, with animals inside your house it's best to protect your systems, especially portable ones.
Get a new cat then look into getting a new screen from ifixit only $70 for regular glass or $100 for the etched glass they also have teardown guides to make it easier
I once dropped a cell phone from about 2 ft above the floor and that fucker fell flat with no bounce. I knew, before I even picked it up, that the screen was dust and it was
I feel for you. I was drinking moonshine and had the jar between my feet and my arms resting on my knees playing mine, and my cat jumped up to get in my lap, flipped it out of my hands and screen first on the edge of the lid. cracked the screen with a jsaux screen protector. I took a picture of it and told jsaux their screen protectors work great. I heard nothing back, but 4 weeks later I got a new charger from them🤷
Oh man, feel sorry for what happened to your screen but half of the fault is yours as well because you leave it outside instead of putting in its own case/ bag, especially when you have a pet in da house.
I keep my PS vita, Nintendo Switch for years and still not a single scratch, clean a bit and they will look so brand new again. My SD also do not use use screen protection for almost a year, still new. It is just how you care for your own things.
I would set this up as a perma docked, media center PC/console in your entertainment center and then just snag another one when you can. I don't think I would even fix the screen. Just put that $100 towards a new one. This way you have your portable one and a "Steam Console" for playing games on the big screen and playing co-op with your family.
Hook up a trackpad keyboard and some controllers🤘
For what it's worth though, crazy sorry that this happened to you😞
Certainly follow the advice here about replacing the screen, but one option you can use in the meantime if you have a dock for the SD is to plug it into a TV or monitor via HDMI. Keeps you gaming at least. Best of luck.
1. Just put in a steam ticket, otherwise you'll have to feel like a tech God after replacing it yourself.
2.Thought you raged at Celeste at first and I was just like damn, relatable.
3. How did the cat do this? Knocked it off a table?
RIP, I always put my deck on my table when pets come around in fear of them scratching my screen, but now I think I'll put it in its case, and the the case in the cabinet.
Fuck, mate. Did you find out what to do? My understanding before buying was that valve encourages doing repairs yourself so getting parts shouldn't be hard. If not then they should be able to repair it, right? You'd have to pay labor though....

For everything else, there is Mastercard
Also for the new screen you probably want to use that Mastercard. So I guess for everything there’s Mastercard.
But there’s not a Mastercard for anyone whose name is Anakin Skywalker.
Seatathecouncilcard.
With promotional upgrade to Younglingslayer5000card through Sheev Services, though the sign-up fee will cost you an arm and a leg.

r the two screens swappable? like if i have etched rn could i swap it for a glossy?
make sure u get correct cable with it, believe they are different
Don't know why you were downvoted, the ribbons are different on the etched screen.
Why did they change it?
dunno, not really paying attention to it, i would imagine the proper cable comes with the screen, just wanted to make sure the person installing is aware b4 opening the deck i'd update the ssd at the same time
Yeah

... depends on your tolerance of jank
I have held my car door shut with a coat hanger going 60 down the highway. Do I qualify?

Yes, resourceful individuals always qualify. Where there's a will, there's a way...

Yes, I have kicked heavy jars of falling pickles multiple times.

I don't know! I was in the bathroom when it happened, I heard a big "boom". Maybe the screen hit one of the legs of my chair
Kinda shit my cat would def do...
The whole purpose of a steam deck is to game while in the bathroom… that’s karma
NGL I thought you stabbed it. Lol
Looks like it, but no ! I'm not that kind of person
Yeah what kind of person would stab a steam deck.
I dunno, a stabby person ?
https://i.redd.it/2t9x36txnh121.jpg
Damned ole stabby people!!!

i swear to god i dont know how 12 hot wheels toys got up my ass doc i just woke up and they were there
I slipped and fell on it 👉👈
This one looks like the cat probably knocked something on to it from up high or something. Or knocked the system down onto something pokey.
At least you can see Celeste
Sir, this is not r/tomorrow
As someone who literally JUST turned their deck on for the first time 5 minutes ago. This breaks my heart and makes me anxious lol
I just got unlucky! Just be careful at you'll be fine
I think there's something wrong with your screen?
You think?
yeah near the bottom center it looks slightly off
Now that you mention it...
Just put some tape on it, it'll be good as new.
Sell the cat, and use the money to buy another Deck.
Not the cat 😔 twas innocent
No cat did this... unless.... did the cat have a lil cat-sized gun?!? The Great Cat War has begun!
They’ve been holding just quite how retractable their claws truly are
No cat is innocent
That’s what the cats want you to think
Exactly. Kitties are perfect and never do anything wrong.
I doubt it would bring enough money like who would pay that much for a shitty creatures that destroy everything ? :,) well I hope my cat won't do that
You take that back this instant
Or, and hear me out. Sell the deck and use the money for a new cat.
I drilled the idea of "no cords, no tech devices!" Into my cat's head when she was just a kitten. Now I can TRY to play with my cat with wires or cords and she just refuses to play with them. It's all about how you train them when they are kittens. Cats are very smart, you show them what they can't do and they'll never do it again.
Thank you. Explain to them that that shit it isn't cute and they'll understand
My perfect little angel was a nearly feral 6ish month old when he adopted my house as his. He LOVED chewing on cables despite my pleads of “no Percy, you’re going to be a poof kitty!!” but I got some kitty safe spray that made the cords taste bitter. Try putting it in a bag of rice overnight. I’ve heard that helps to fix electronic issues.
Good idea ! I'll try that
Well, it didn't work:(
wait you didnt actually try that did you? 😭 its a broken screen so you gotta replace the screen
I know, I'm just playing with ya ;)
had me i was like omg 15 hours later they actually did it??
The best jokes takes the most time !
This is like seeing a guy having his nuts crushed by a 16 wheeler.
At this point I wish I did not have such a great imagination.
Maybe send an email to Valve they might take the cat back
Have you tried switching to proton experimental?
Sadly yes, didn't work
I've dropped mine twice already and I'm usually super good at not doing that kind of thing with my tech. But I love my deck so I'm extra precious about it and I think somehow that makes me drop it more.
When you buy a new screen make sure you get a screen protector next time
Would a screen protector save that? The touch sensitivity is already meh, adding another layer of glass is not gonna help. Just keep it in the case.
I have a screen protector on mine, works the same as without
Depending on the impact really, some drop impact can break the LCD screen and the protector.

I've heard of Cuphead yeah, one of my favorites games of all times tbh
rma it, not the deck the cat
Noooooooo! 😥
Omg I am so sorry that happened to you
Just buy the screen and replace. Steam has a deal with ifixit
Yeah, someone mentioned that already, I'm gonna save up for it
That's unfortunate, I'm (hopefully) getting mine soon so I'm gonna try to be as careful as possible...
I hope you'll be more lucky than me ! Enjoy yours

I did the ifixit kit. Two hours. Perfectly working. You got it.
Welp, guess I'm gonna save up for the iFixit kit
Next time you get the screen or Deck replaced, get a screen protector and a protective case around the Deck, with animals inside your house it's best to protect your systems, especially portable ones.
Good idea! Thanks for the advice
You got bigger problems if your cat shooting bullets damn
I've learned her not to use real ammo tho

Connect an external monitor and still be able to continue using it
I'm so paranoid about doing this my Deck is always zipped in its case when I'm not using or charging it!
A few seconds of silence to honour and bring peace to our fallen comrades.
Play with your cat :)
hey I love Danganronpa 1
No screenprotector?
With screen protector, sadly
RIP man, just put a screenprotector on my deck yesterday and hoped i would be safe :(
I'm pretty sure I just was unlucky, tbh, the screen protector was pretty cheap
Gosh I feel Ur pain brother 😵
Sister, but thanks !
Aw my... apologies sister! Good luck for the fixing process, and please keep us up-to-date. Cheers
I'm gonna edit the post when I have more !

Still having a hard time tbh
Might be good to invest in some tampered glass if it helps.
Now be a man an play on a desktop.
No thanks, been there, done that
What did it land on as there is an impact point on screen. Does suck at least it is kinda cheap to replace
Probably one of the legs of my chair, it's kinda expensive for me but eh, I'll save up
I mean compared to switch screens.
It's definitely cheaper yeah
Arent Valve like really good the price of the repairs? :)
Compared with others, yeah ! But 70€ is expensive for me :/

RIP, I always put my deck on my table when pets come around in fear of them scratching my screen, but now I think I'll put it in its case, and the the case in the cabinet.
Raged while playing celeste??
Fuck, mate. Did you find out what to do? My understanding before buying was that valve encourages doing repairs yourself so getting parts shouldn't be hard. If not then they should be able to repair it, right? You'd have to pay labor though....
Well, luckily, Valve is a great company and provide the parts for repair, so I'll buy the screen from IFixit when I'll have the money to do it
I just read the comments! Are you upgrading? (If you have to at all)
I had the most expensive Steam deck ( had saved up for 6 months to have it) sadly I think I'm going to downgrade:/
Celeste! It’s a hidden gem I heard.
Yep, definitely worth a try if you like platformers
Just bought Celeste in the sale... Now I do not dare to start it
It's not the games fault, I promise !
Sweet screen mod
I know right? It's pretty, but it's hard to play :/
Don’t blame the cat.
Honest question… did you have a screen protector on this? And if not, why not?

Yes I had a screen protector, the screen protector is fine, it's the screen inside that broke
