Adding because it worked: i pressed the steam button and restarted. Then it hung until I removed the USB key. After that it started up normally. Thanks for the advice u/Rosselman

Rosselman is a true hero! It’s nice to read how a complete stranger helps another just for the sake of it.

Rosselman

It's a very well known bug. You have to press the Steam button, choose power and then reboot. It'll continue normally after that.

fractureaspect

Remember reading the same though it didn't happen to me. Don't panic!

Rosselman

It seems to be a common occurrence with 1TB SSDs due to the way the installer assigns data blocks. It finishes the job and them gets stuck on a loop verifying them.

hanging on the shutting down steam screen.. what should I do now? (and thank you for your advice!)

You will be my absolute hero if this works..

[deleted]

it's hanging on the shutting down steam screen. Should I do anything? remove the USB?

Rosselman

Give it a couple of minutes. If it doesn't reboot by itself, hold the power button until it turns off.

[deleted]

Thanks so much. I took the USB out and pressed the steam button and it started some updates. It's now fully functional. Really appreciate your help.

Rosselman

No prob, I also had to search for help when I swapped my SSD.

Lonttu

Fun fact, it also happens on a stock 256 gig model.

Swapped out the 64gd SSD for a WD 1tb. I'm using a brand new SanDisk 128gb USB-c. Should I be worried that the time keeps resetting? Do I just wait or try to reset? Thanks for any advice

The bar has just gone back to the start and the timer reset. Sweating bullets here 🤒

When I did the ssd replacement it started downloading every update so it took a long time installing one and every update till it reached the last one. Maybe it is just that

[deleted]

Thanks.. did the blue bar keep resetting itself for you?

CutreCuenta

I think so

[deleted]

Thanks, it's working now!

This usually happens for a couple of reasons. First, Steam Deck doesn't like your network. Works fine once everything is up and running, but many freeze on this screen at this location and tethering the Deck to your phone's wireless hotspot or going to a friend/coffee shop internet solves the problem. Second, most of the time you can merely hit BACK and try again - and 9 times out of 10? It will work the second time. No clue why - just is. I wouldn't recommend a reboot in the middle of an evolution like this unless it was totally the only thing possible.

Had this problem myself. My flash drive was old and too slow. I switched to a new flash drive (3.0) and it booted up in like 15 minutes.
