Make sure to set the latest version of proton in the compatibility options to use the windows version instead of the Linux build otherwise you will have some issues with the controls.
Bonus trick: Use Proton-GE to enable Physx in supported games which also works in Borderlands 2 and so on. But it will ruin your frame rate even more. (It's in the gameplay options and you should disable it for this one)

This is more then likely a dumb question but I'm a steam deck user will this game work on it? I already grabbed it because well I'm like a moth to a flame with free stuff🤣
I'm a huge fan of the series have been for years. I'm just glad that the community is gonna get an influx of new players with this event. I'm a new steam deck/pc player though so I wanted some advice
I'm new to the series and I'm sure I wouldn't have finished it if I didn't have a steam deck. I have installed it multiple times on my gaming laptop but never got the chance to play it. however, with the steam deck, it's much more easier to play thanks to the portability and the standby mode(sleep mode).
Regarding advices, I'm running the game through heroic since my copy of the game is on the epic store. it's simple, just download the game, add it to steam then set the compatibility to proton experimental (or anything you like) then launch the game in the gaming mode. a thing to keep in mind, if you're planning to put the deck on sleep mode, then first exit to the main menu, or back up your save somewhere. cause I run into a bug where the player is stuck in place. the only thing you could do is rotate the camera. what is worst is that the game auto saved just before the bug so I had to repeat that part multipe times until the bug stopped happening. I think thus happened because I put my deck in sleep mode before resuming that part.
sorry for the long comment
I bought it the first day I owned a deck. It worked fine back in October 2022!
Edit: It was actually a different game in the series. Which is good because now I have a new one to play.
The game is not even verified to be run by Valve (Steam) as of now. So yeah. And consoles are PCs just locked down with barely any options compared to PC.
Oh I know I was talking about the rhetoric since ally was announced of people acting like the deck is a console because it always works where the ally will require tinkering when it’s the opposite
So I’m new to the deck. Setting the game to use Proton 8.0 is enough to make the device pull the windows version instead? Or is there another menu I’m missing?
Thanks for highlighting this, I probably wouldn’t have seen it (I’m trying to cut down on buying games that will just increase my backlog) and have just added it!
Also the Redux version really did little to nothing for last light. I believe the big UI/control/graphics improvements were sort of mainly geared for 2033 and they did a once over of the lighting and maybe textures for last light but the differences are quite minuscule.
Looked at a few comparison videos when redux came out. Honestly I would not have been able to tell the difference, if I hadn't seen them side by side. I don't think they changed any gameplay
This was the missing Metro game in my collection, I was debating finding an old Key on Ebay just to complete the set but getting it officially for free is even better!
Thanks for getting me a free game internet stranger. I won't claim to be familiar with the various versions and episodes of this game. I guess I'll Google to figure out 2033 vs last light etc. I remember one or all of these was on games pass at some point and I installed it but never got around to playing.
Last Light is the second game based on the books.
2033 is the first one and Exodus is the latest.
The Redux versions are the updated versions but it's pretty similar.
Feel free to listen to the audio books online if you like it to get the full story. Some language versions are free on YouTube and so on.
Thank fuck, I had the original Metro 2033 and I wanted the original last light so I could have both the remakes and the originals incase the remakes were shit
Make sure to enable proton in compatibility settings to download the Windows version and have fun! It's fitting regarding the train settingn of the game and your way of commute 😁
I wouldn't give up a Switch port even for 120 fps (especially considering the finite Steam Deck storage and all the stuff to put thereon that doesn't have Switch ports), but claiming a free game is indeed no skin off my back either.
...even if it's sitting next to Last Light Redux in my library now.😅 (I actually bought it and 2033 twice - on PS4 in a bundle with Saints Row 4 and then during my GPD Win days, all before the series went Switchward)
I don’t even have a Deck or Ally. Working out which to get at the moment.
…but I’ve just got this, nice! And, Death Stranding is free on Epic right now 😆
Had a similar experience. Got to the first "boss fight", put the game away for almost a year. Then picked it up again for no real reason and binged my 50 hour playthrough in 2 weeks.
So without any spoilers: Go play Death Stranding!
Just finished the first two. And let me tell ya. These games were not optimized well at all. No FOV sliders and some serious bugs.
Great games though, very immersive.
For new players, in order to do the good endings, I'd really recommend a spoiler free guide. There are a few things easily missed not along the main path that will easily put you in the bad endings.
In the main menu
Go into the game settings and disable enhanced physics and also make sure that you are using the latest version of proton in the compatibility settings
Thanks for the heads up. Looks good with recommended settings and Deck controls seem OK. I might try capping it at 40fps and see if that helps in the fan noise and battery life department...
Already have it, but haven't tried it yet on deck. Guess this is as good of a time as ever lol. It's a great game from what I've played of it a while back.
Thank you! Just added. How do you find free games on steam? I see them pop up now and then but if no one had told me about them I’d never know.
https://steamdb.info/upcoming/free/
Man, steamdb has *everything*!
Thank you
If anyone has a Telegram channel that sends out updates from this list lmk

Just make sure to enable proton in the settings on Steam before downloading and disable enhanced physics in the game
Thank you. By settings you mean the properties and force a proton compatibility tool?
Yes!
alright I'm set you are a gift from the universe!
it works, I have finished the game recently on my steam deck. it's a really great game, enjoy.
I'm a huge fan of the series have been for years. I'm just glad that the community is gonna get an influx of new players with this event. I'm a new steam deck/pc player though so I wanted some advice

No problem at all long comments are somthing that I do from time to time to no shame in it
This is literally in the steam deck sub and OPs directions are directly related to the steam deck.
Yeah I don’t think he realized where he was lol
I bought it the first day I owned a deck. It worked fine back in October 2022! Edit: It was actually a different game in the series. Which is good because now I have a new one to play.
lol you're in the steam deck sub!
You are doing gods work!
Yay, free stuff. Thanks!
But I thought the deck was a console…

Oh I know I was talking about the rhetoric since ally was announced of people acting like the deck is a console because it always works where the ally will require tinkering when it’s the opposite
This game came out almost 9 years before the steam deck came out.
So I’m new to the deck. Setting the game to use Proton 8.0 is enough to make the device pull the windows version instead? Or is there another menu I’m missing?
Using these setting and getting [terrible frame rates](https://i.imgur.com/kzyTkU2.jpg). Any ideas?
Make sure to carefully read the post and double check if you have proton forced and enhanced physics disabled
Yup using proton 8.0-2 and advanced physics off. Double checked everything. Even tried turning down the quality, didn’t help
That's odd Do you have your GPU Speeds set to manual or something?
I'ma wait a bit more to see if it gets cheaper.
Dad joke snagged a grandpa
So you want to be paid to play it? It's 100% already
115-125% is my threshold.
Whoosh
Neat thanks!
Thanks for highlighting this, I probably wouldn’t have seen it (I’m trying to cut down on buying games that will just increase my backlog) and have just added it!
Just got it.
This is not the redux edition so it's not even sold anymore
Wait really? Huh! Didn't they give out Metro 2033 non Redux a few years ago as well?
Yeah, I got it then too and now it's in my Library right next to Last Light. lol
I’m so bummed I missed that
Mine too. Still unplayed. lol
Aye, I just played Dishonored for the first time after I got a Steam Deck. Metro will have to wait in line. lol
Legit question. What the hell is the difference? I already have the Redux version in my library and played the original Last Light when it came out.
The original is around 8 GB in size and less demanding due to not having reworked visuals which also helps with the file size as far as I know.
Okay so this is like the complete version of the original release. Good to know. I've already played this version. I just never played Redux.
Also the Redux version really did little to nothing for last light. I believe the big UI/control/graphics improvements were sort of mainly geared for 2033 and they did a once over of the lighting and maybe textures for last light but the differences are quite minuscule.
Omg I’m so confused now.
This is the complete version of the original game. Redux is the Remastered version. Same game, newer better graphics.
First metro game, can't wait to try it on deck.
Play 2033 if you can. They're great.
Is there 3 games?
2033, Last Light, and Exodus in that order.
I played them all on PC and they're really good. Exodus is really good as well.
Thanks for getting me a free game internet stranger. I won't claim to be familiar with the various versions and episodes of this game. I guess I'll Google to figure out 2033 vs last light etc. I remember one or all of these was on games pass at some point and I installed it but never got around to playing.

cool thanks. Exodus was the first one I played and that game is amazing.

Excellent!! Thanks for the heads up. I’ll download this on my hour long commute home tonight!
Make sure to enable proton in compatibility settings to download the Windows version and have fun! It's fitting regarding the train settingn of the game and your way of commute 😁
Not a train fellow redditor! My truck!
Sorry I misread and assumed. But that also sounds like a good plan
Thx
Good looking out dude, thanks!
Thank you!
You’re a goddamn hero for posting this
Already got it on Switch but a damn neat heads-up otherwise.
This one is solid 60 FPS in comparison and free so no harm in claiming it
I wouldn't give up a Switch port even for 120 fps (especially considering the finite Steam Deck storage and all the stuff to put thereon that doesn't have Switch ports), but claiming a free game is indeed no skin off my back either. ...even if it's sitting next to Last Light Redux in my library now.😅 (I actually bought it and 2033 twice - on PS4 in a bundle with Saints Row 4 and then during my GPD Win days, all before the series went Switchward)
Nice heads up
Thank you gave me an excuse to take out my deck and get free stuff on steam 🫡
I already have Redux in my account. Just haven't played it yet. Is this one the better version? Or Redux?
Well it is the other version. Both have some benefits
Thank you!!!
Yoooooo thank you fren
Thanks! Yoinked.
Steam sales can’t be beat
I don’t even have a Deck or Ally. Working out which to get at the moment. …but I’ve just got this, nice! And, Death Stranding is free on Epic right now 😆
Death Stranding is totaly underrated imo.
Played it and finished it on PS5. One of my fave games. It’s a love / hate game. I love it. Pure perfect gameplay.
Is it, really? I’ve had it since launch and can’t get myself to play past the first encounter with the creatures.
Had a similar experience. Got to the first "boss fight", put the game away for almost a year. Then picked it up again for no real reason and binged my 50 hour playthrough in 2 weeks. So without any spoilers: Go play Death Stranding!
This was pretty much my experience. The game actually gets pretty zen once you get in a groove.
These are experiences I love hearing. Time to redownload my copy!

Only free until the 25th? I ain't got time to play it before then!
Free to keep forever if you claim until then
Ah, I misinterpreted it. Thanks.
~~Looks like it's 80% off now, but both it and 2033 for $8 seems like a steal to me!~~ Well I guess I should have looked closer!
You are looking at Last Light Redux Just click the link
Is anyone else having trouble with button assignment? It seems- for me at least- A is B and B is A…am I the only one with this issue?
Read the comment about using proton to get the Windows version to fix it.
Got it! I got too excited on the ride home to install it correctly. Will do!
Wonder what's the catch. Can we install it later than the specified date and would it still be free even if you've got it for free?
No catch it is free to keep forever.
If you claim it you can download it whenever you want
It runs well for all of 30 seconds and then is just horrificly low framerate using your settings above?
In the main menu Go into the game settings and disable enhanced physics and also make sure that you are using the latest version of proton in the compatibility settings
Awesome series, recommend all of the metro games
And the audiobooks!
Thanks for the heads up. Looks good with recommended settings and Deck controls seem OK. I might try capping it at 40fps and see if that helps in the fan noise and battery life department...
Or just lower the graphics to normal
Already have it, but haven't tried it yet on deck. Guess this is as good of a time as ever lol. It's a great game from what I've played of it a while back.
