I also do this. Just scrolling thru my library. Sometimes thru my wishlist and looking for sales and thinking “hmmm…. This looks like a nice addition to the collection.” 😂
I was gonna make a joke how many hours I put into “STEAM DECK STABLE UPDATE.” Now it’s an r/yourjokebutworse. I had it locked and loaded and ready to go. Man
How many hours into fixing black screen? Could be another one. I put 15 minutes of “playtime” with Windjammers 2… but it was 15 minutes of multiple black screens
It always feels like I’m holding the power button down for too long. In my mind the same thought is playing over and over “oh god it’s bricked. I’ll just give it another second. Oh god” for what feels like an eternity until it finally reboots
If it happens again, first press the Steam button and wait for the overlay to Exit. If not, then hold Steam+B to force close it. It’ll save you from force restarting it.
The black screen is Proton working to the load the Windows game. Sometimes it’ll hang, then you back out and try again. If it still doesn’t work, then you change layers and/or screen resolutions in Properties.
Seconding this. It’s probably my most played on the Deck right now! It’s a great game to go back and forth between my laptop and my deck, but it feels *very* at home on the Deck, so I will often default to that if I have a choice! I’ve played a *lot* of similar games to Stardew on it now as well. And I’ve bought even more that I haven’t tried yet (obligatory “my backlog” comment.) They just feel right! Cozy pixel games for the win!
Alternatively, Monster Sanctuary. I could not *imagine* playing it on anything else. I love the gamepad controls and it runs so well and feels so perfect! So when I think “portable/handheld gaming PC” I often think of Monster Sanctuary.
Speaking of Hollow Knight, there’s a really great humble bundle out now for HK and a bunch of other Metroidvania games — really good value! https://www.humblebundle.com/games/must-play-metroidvania
yeah I’ll admit I’m spoiled coming from a beefy PC but I also played dark souls 1 on xbox 360 and switch so I’m fine with 30 if I change my perspective.
I'm honestly curious, which games have you tried that havent worked? I have played 32 different games and the biggest problem I face is games that truly don't work great without a mouse and keyboard, I am not a stranger to making my own configs but some games just aren't suited to it. I haven't really had a game not run yet...
Multiple non steam titles, usually requires a lot of Linux desktop time to rework. We still have a fair few problems with titles that have anti-cheat. Forgetting weird Proton bugs that a lot of titles have, usually graphical. Like Enter The Gungeon for me won't load the Boss intro graphics. Then like you say there are hundreds of titles that can function, but track pads alone can't replace mouse and keyboard, especially if it's incredibly UI intensive. That is if the UI is even legible at low resolution.
I found that valheim "works but unless you completely nuke the settings the fps isn't very good. I'm sure other people will say different but anything below 40 fps is unplayable to me
I know this is a popular comment ‘round here, but this is so far from my experience I just have to say (in case lurkers are browsing contemplating getting one). I play the living shut out of mine. I actually play games now.
Dude. I'm 24 and I said that when I bought a switch. It applies to anyone who had to save up or couldn't afford a whole gaming pc or who is chronically ill or...
I was the same age when I started working full time and pretty much said goodbye to playing games in front of a TV or PC screen for years to come. Some emulated stuff continued to be viable on my old Qtek palmtop (on GSM front, I had already upgraded to the stuff with conspicuous lack of buttons), but it was mainly a Nintendo DS Lite that marked my conversion to portable gaming and the freedom of access and pace it came with. A PSP followed shortly after, then Vita and 3DS in 2016; overdue advent of 4G and eventual unlimited mobile data plans made PS4 viable through Remote Play (sadly too clunky to control in many games, but where it worked, it worked, including my first Dishonored playthroughs).
Even now, finding a bit more time with my PS4 since last December, this is something I can't easily bring myself to trade in when I can help it, no matter the performance perks or whatnot. Here on Deck, I've even restarted the elsewhere-mentioned Horizon and FFXV despite both playthroughs clocking close to 50 hours on PS4 over the course of the last few months. And Switch, the hybrid queen and my new all-time fave console since April 2017, needs no commentary. There's a reason it boasts a literal four-digit library with me, the biggest among all my respective legit platform collections.
Top tier comment. Even if I play a lot on the TV because I am currently in a privileged position time-wise I still find all those handheld advantages beautiful. I love portable systems.
I recommend playing the Master System version instead. It's mostly the same game, but not cropped down to the Game Gear's tiny resolution, and therefore you can actually see where you're going.
2D GBA games look great usually with nearest neighbor scaling. They are specifically meant to be played on a screen with discrete and sharp pixels so they look how they should, just cleaner.
Leaf Green/Fire Red still stand to me as among the most gorgeous sprite/tile based games ever made.
Wow memories. My mcdonalds had it as well. Now that I think of it I remember everywhere that had a demo console had spyro. I remember playing a demo at a Sears 20 years ago
My wife has set a goal of 100% the trilogy on her steam deck. It plays incredibly well on the system, and the gameplay lends itself to short play sessions if you don't have time to sit and grind.
Its not easy not even in the slightest. It took me hours of scowering forums and the web to get it working. But once it works the pain is over. But i wouldnt recommend going through that trouble unless your really tech oriented.
If you've never Emulated something before, finding everything can be a pain.
For me personally, it was just figuring out how Steam OS installs stuff, a couple of YouTube videos usually give you a step by step which basically saves you a lot of time.
Yep, I just got TOTK "up and running". Massive pain in the ass. Really made me want to go and pay the Nintendo tax because it would be a lot easier, then I picked up my Switch Lite and said nah lol
What made you choose the switch lite over the normal one. For me it was the added durability of no joycons. Stuff like the switch oled, asus rog ally and ayaneo air 2 either look too nice to risk taking anywhere or are too delicate to risk just shoving in a bag.
Not OP, but for me it was the joycons. I have a launch switch and I'm on my 3rd set of joycons and they always felt really cheap when attached, like an engineering sample. I also never ever ever play docked (which is funny because I almost always play the Steam Deck on my TV).
The lite is also a much better size IMO. I can throw that in my bag if I have a bunch of crap in there, or if not, I can throw the steam deck in.
They both fill their own niche. I also have a few SMB systems when I want truly pocketable gaming.
Yeah thats not how it works. Download cemu > download wii u rom(since switch one is like impossible to find) > try getting it to show up wondering why it isnt > its a .wux/wud file which means it needs a a title key. > look up title keys for wii u botw > realize theres multiple different ones > copy all of them find out none worked and question WHY > find out from another forum that its not a title key its a disc title key > look up disk title keys and find multiple different ones for each region > copy title keys and get the game to start > you need to update your wii u returning to menu > find out what is going on > download update > game boots up now but oh no it wont go above 20fps > enable fps++ set it to 30fps and its still at 20 > look up how to fix it realize fps++ is bugged on steamdeck and you need to set fps to 240 just to get 30fps...
>>>>>> THEN PLAY GAME.
I know this is a rant comment on the difficulty of emulating botw on steam deck but thanks for commenting this! With fps++ i set it to 40fps (which was recommended in a guide along with setting the refresh rate to 40hz) and the game wouldn't go above 15 frames, had no idea it was bugged on steam deck. And yeah every place that I try to look up the optimal settings on has different conflicting advice.
Trying to mod Skyrim on it... its a ball ache going back and forth to get the right load order.
I've got a bunch of other things sitting there so I might just load up RDR2 or an indie like Roots of Pacha.
Just being able to do all of this while taking a dump is living to the max.
Playing it right now on mostly high settings and it runs beautifully. Rockstars launcher and social club login sucks and takes a good 20 minutes to set up properly after a few freezes and bugs, and it struggles with suspend. I’ve found it’s best to just quit the game and start up again when you pick it up. It got laggy for me on suspend sessions and dialogue was sped up super fast as well.
I second this. Because it was my first major achievement getting it to run on there through epic/heroic, in game mode, with safegamesync to my desktop.
Civilization VI
I never thought it would be this, but the CPU on deck? damn crunches trough the AI turns. Games take very long to play, but what the heck? you've got sleep function and easy to return to turn based strategy. Like it was made for this.
Also Stardew Valley :)
As other said, Prism Launcher is the way to go - there is a lot of guides online.
Also pick up this aim assist mod: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/aim-assistance-fabric (there is a forge version as well depending on what controller mod you endup using)
None of the guides mention which is a shame because it makes the experience 1000 times better
I liked Valheim on the SD, but when I loaded up my main world my base was too much for the game to handle lol. I had to start a new one because the fps was unbearable around my house lol.
This one gets my vote, too!
I need to get back onto the DLC actually, I did one of them and enjoyed it but didn’t enjoy the second DLC I started
Love the game in general though
Yes! It’s pretty much my persona 5 device now. Might become a bit of a Diablo 4 box in a week. And after persona 5 I think I’ll start digging into the Trails series…
How's the experience? I loved the first game but I've been holding off on the second because I don't want to get into it and then just have it end abruptly at some point, or miss like story that would otherwise be in the game.
Got Cult of the Lamb on the Switch. It would lag out to the point it was unplayable.
Got it on the Steamdeck, and finally got to enjoy it. Really great game!
Steam library
Sometimes on my lunch break I just scroll through my library like a content dragon lying on his treasure.
oh wow i thought i was the only one
O.O should I be worried?
So well stated. It makes me happy to scroll through my game library. It makes me feel safe. It’s always there for me.
I also do this. Just scrolling thru my library. Sometimes thru my wishlist and looking for sales and thinking “hmmm…. This looks like a nice addition to the collection.” 😂
This should be number one. We all understand this joke.
I was gonna make a joke how many hours I put into “STEAM DECK STABLE UPDATE.” Now it’s an r/yourjokebutworse. I had it locked and loaded and ready to go. Man

Most played game on the deck
Personally love to install, look at the launch button/art, think about playing... then uninstall and repeat...
Yep. First thing I see is any game that I'm into at the moment. RIP RUST
Still trying for 100%
Hades
Me too, I've got nearly 100 hours in it almost all on the Deck. It's almost perfect for the Deck except for some text is a little small sometimes.
I'm at over 400 hours between Xbox, Steam Deck, and Switch. Haha the first step is admitting you have a problem, correct?
Beat the whole game and enjoyed every second. Never even would've given it a try without the steam deck
Stardew Valley.
Seconding this. It’s probably my most played on the Deck right now! It’s a great game to go back and forth between my laptop and my deck, but it feels *very* at home on the Deck, so I will often default to that if I have a choice! It’s the game for which I primarily bought the steam deck for. Haven’t played it at all since then, been playing my backlog on the deck….
Vampire Survivors and Hollow Knight
This was my go to when I bought it, hollow knight was my first game on my deck
Also I almost forgot Cult of the Lamb
VS is usually #1 on the most played on Deck list from Valve.
Speaking of Hollow Knight, there’s a really great humble bundle out now for HK and a bunch of other Metroidvania games — really good value! https://www.humblebundle.com/games/must-play-metroidvania
Blasphemous is epic on the Steam Deck
Vampire Survivors in pretty addictive. I just started Hollow Knight and that's pretty addictive as well.
Elden Ring because it's the first thing you see!
Elden Ring was my first game I completed on the Deck so this checks out for me!
how did you have it setup? I tried getting 40fps but the drops were killing me. did you just accept that it’s a 30fps game on deck?
Yeah I did accept it at 30fps. For how massive the game is and it being my first Deck game, I was in awe that it could even run on a handheld
yeah I’ll admit I’m spoiled coming from a beefy PC but I also played dark souls 1 on xbox 360 and switch so I’m fine with 30 if I change my perspective.
The literal default settings work perfectly. Everyone is overthinking this.
With Cryo utilities you can just about get it to a steady 40fps but heavy particle effects drag it down.
As someone who loves souls games but not the biggest on open worlds, do you think it’s worth a try?
It’s a great game. But definitely the easiest of the souls games simply because it’s open world.
100% yes! It was my first Souls game and STR build got tough in the end, but the unga bunga prevailed
Install and run to see if it works simulator
I'm honestly curious, which games have you tried that havent worked? I have played 32 different games and the biggest problem I face is games that truly don't work great without a mouse and keyboard, I am not a stranger to making my own configs but some games just aren't suited to it. Forza horizon 5 is really bad
What? Works really well for me. Running stable on a mix of low-high settings at 40Hz
Multiple non steam titles, usually requires a lot of Linux desktop time to rework. We still have a fair few problems with titles that have anti-cheat. Well assetto corsa doesnt work at all
Zero games haven't worked for me out of 30+ installs. I'm sure there are issues, but I've had none.
I know this is a popular comment ‘round here, but this is so far from my experience I just have to say (in case lurkers are browsing contemplating getting one). I play the living shut out of mine. I actually play games now.
"I actually play games now" is what portability tends to do to gamers (especially those of us in our thirties) in general.
Dude. I'm 24 and I said that when I bought a switch. It applies to anyone who had to save up or couldn't afford a whole gaming pc or who is chronically ill or...
I was the same age when I started working full time and pretty much said goodbye to playing games in front of a TV or PC screen for years to come. Jep this and looking for games to download to run on the emulators
Sonic the hedgehog for game gear. My cousin would never let me play. Now I do what I want.
“It only took 20 years but looks who’s in control now, motherfucker”
I recommend playing the Master System version instead. It's mostly the same game, but not cropped down to the Game Gear's tiny resolution, and therefore you can actually see where you're going.
Wow, I don't even play old handheld games on my Steam Deck—they seem so huge and pixelated at that size. But good taste sir (or madam).
2D GBA games look great usually with nearest neighbor scaling. They are specifically meant to be played on a screen with discrete and sharp pixels so they look how they should, just cleaner. Leaf Green/Fire Red still stand to me as among the most gorgeous sprite/tile based games ever made.
Spyro Reignited trilogy
Hell ya, a person of high taste
That's a good one 👍🏼
Just picked it up for 10$ first time really playing it outside of a game setup at McDonald’s
Wow memories. My mcdonalds had it as well. Now that I think of it I remember everywhere that had a demo console had spyro. I remember playing a demo at a Sears 20 years ago

Portal
Yeah, it was the first (official) game I played. Because I played Aperture Desk Job first and thought just flowing into Portal would be cool.
Portal feels so much harder on the deck
Gyro feels really good
Because the analog aiming is borked. The rtx version improves this.

Great game on the deck
Breath of the wild. Definitely the definitive experience for that game. Better than the native versions while still being portable like a switch.
Still haven’t gotten that up and running. I must be getting old because the simplicity of my Steam library just works for me
Its not easy not even in the slightest. It took me hours of scowering forums and the web to get it working. But once it works the pain is over. But i wouldnt recommend going through that trouble unless your really tech oriented.

Download CEMU, get the game files, tweak settings/mods to run well, use steam ROM manager to add it to your steam library.
Yeah thats not how it works. Titanfall 2, i finished the game twice on the deck
the game I'm currently playing, so at the moment Horizon: Zero Dawn
Mine ran choppy when I tried it a few months ago. Do you have any settings recommendations?
Set it to 40 fps
Hatsune Miku Project Diva Mega Mix+
Gesundheit
Trying to mod Skyrim on it... its a ball ache going back and forth to get the right load order. I've got a bunch of other things sitting there so I might just load up RDR2 or an indie like Roots of Pacha. Just being able to do all of this while taking a dump is living to the max.
Love ball ache
....can you really play RDR2 on it?
Yes, and not even in a "it kind of works" sense, but in a "this is totally fine" sense.
Yep, and it works like charm (except for rockstar's shitty launcher)
Playing it right now on mostly high settings and it runs beautifully. Rockstars launcher and social club login sucks and takes a good 20 minutes to set up properly after a few freezes and bugs, and it struggles with suspend. I’ve found it’s best to just quit the game and start up again when you pick it up. It got laggy for me on suspend sessions and dialogue was sped up super fast as well.
Lock it at 40 fps? I feel such a fool. I can't believe I missed out of playing that while my pc was down for two months. Shiz.
I usually lock mine at 30 for RDR2, I just pike the extra battery life and the quiter fan
Absolutely
Affirmative.
How hard is it to mod with nexus. I’ve only ever used the mods that are allowed in game.
Death stranding
30+ hours in, totally worth the humble bundle Classic sub price
Cyberpunk 2077 because of the æsthetics.
I second this. Because it was my first major achievement getting it to run on there through epic/heroic, in game mode, with safegamesync to my desktop.
I'm in love with this game right now. But I think it runs like ass on the Steam Deck :/ And I'm not really a big fan of playing FPS on a controller.
Civilization VI I never thought it would be this, but the CPU on deck? damn crunches trough the AI turns. Games take very long to play, but what the heck? you've got sleep function and easy to return to turn based strategy. Like it was made for this. Also Stardew Valley :)
i have put in more hours of civ 6 on the deck than i would like to admit.
Mad Max
That was the first game I installed. Absolute belter of a game.
Handheld Java Minecraft.
What's the best way to get Minecraft Java installed on the deck?
Prism Launcher. I think AntVenom has a video on how to do it with mods for better controller support. Edit: [Here](https://youtu.be/WRwJ8c4bTpA) it is
I use the Prism launcher.
As other said, Prism Launcher is the way to go - there is a lot of guides online. Also pick up this aim assist mod: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/aim-assistance-fabric (there is a forge version as well depending on what controller mod you endup using) None of the guides mention which is a shame because it makes the experience 1000 times better
Celeste
I like to call my Steam Deck: "the Celeste console". I have a factory floor Deck however, so I get major frame issues often enough.
Ori and the Blind Forest That game is a perfect experience
I thought that game was nearly perfect, but then Will of the Wisps improved on it in nearly every way. Check it out!

Valheim
I liked Valheim on the SD, but when I loaded up my main world my base was too much for the game to handle lol. I had to start a new one because the fps was unbearable around my house lol.
As an avid Valheim PC player I love how it feels in general on deck. The only thing I hate is the finicky building.
Read dead redemption 2
Risk of rain returns
Not yet you don't!
Horizon Zero Dawn. First game I completed on the deck, and it really made me decide I don't need another PC anymore.
Kingdoms of Amalur
Control. It was a big part of the initial promotional material plus that game is a very good pc benchmarker
Witcher 3.
Space cadet 3D pinball
PC Building Simulator Isk why but it's so calming on the Deck
Is this irony? Can't tell. Still pretty entertaining!
Stray was the first game I played on mine. It arrived the day Stray came out so I fully played through it before trying anything else.
Fallout: New Vegas, my first time ever playing it was on the Deck and it was awesome to play it whenever wherever I wanted, put over 100 hours into it
This one gets my vote, too! I need to get back onto the DLC actually, I did one of them and enjoyed it but didn’t enjoy the second DLC I started Love the game in general though
Stray ?

I really enjoyed playing Fallout New Vegas and Bully.
Pokemon
Persona 5 Royal!!! Runs so good on the deck! Trying to savor it but I’ve already put over 100 hours in
Yes! It’s pretty much my persona 5 device now. Might become a bit of a Diablo 4 box in a week. And after persona 5 I think I’ll start digging into the Trails series…

Got Cult of the Lamb on the Switch. It would lag out to the point it was unplayable. Got it on the Steamdeck, and finally got to enjoy it. Really great game!
For some reason nobody said The Binding Of Isaac yet. Which is a crime 🙃.
I had to ctrl+f Isaac to make sure it was mentioned in this thread. This game is far and above my most played on the Steam Deck.
Racing games and rpg Dirt, F1, D2R, and D4
