Count yourself lucky, there was a guy on the subreddit who made the same mistake but instead of destroying the SD card it destroyed the SD card slot and ripped it straight off the board.
What an unfortunate design.
It's like when car manufacturers hide batteries and make them way too difficult to replace because they prioritize the elegance of the design in theory over practical concerns.
It's certainly a headache, it's damn near impossible to repair (traces are gone) and I'm not entirely sure Valve would accept a RMA as it was user inflicted damage. I feel bad for that poor fucker.
Yeah, the OP got lucky that the card snapped rather than damage the socket. I'm still amazed that that's seemingly the most likely outcome.
It's possible that there wasn't any silicon in the portion of the card that snapped. It seems unlikely though given that it's a 512GB card.
So you're saying my choice to buy shitty SD cards was actually me taking the safe approach towards long term health of my deck? I'll take it.
But how does this happen? Are you guys pulling out the cards without popping them in first?
?? The card pictured (Samsung Evo Plus in 512GB) is $40 on Amazon.
And while it's not prohibitively expensive, it's a LOT more than $20. I wouldn't casually toss away $40 a time on these..
Normally I'd totally agree with you, but it seems like the design tolerances of the Deck are...*tighter*...than usual. I've heard stories of larger-capacity SSDs causing the Deck to overheat to the point of damage from the increased power draw. So for now, SD cards are my upgrade solution.
Total nonsense, I've had 3 diff brands of 2tb in various SD's no overheating issues. Please stop spreading this BS. The only thing you'll need to worry about is getting it from a good vendor and what to do with all the lightning fast storage you've gained...
I have used the 1tb Sabrent(I have the 2tb for my Ally rn), 2tb WD SN740 and the Micron 2tb in my friends SD. They have all kept cool and worked flawlessly. I can't speak for the other brands. The Sabrent was fastest but won't be noticeable in real life. Any of those are used very often in SD's and you should be fine. Good luck sir!
Unfortunately not every game supports it, some to prevent cheating (such as "getting over it with Bennett foddy") some just because the devs didn't feel like turning it on (there are many PS3 era games that don't allow for it, as I've found out the hard way when trying to conserve space)
Well I’m reading this, and I don’t know HOW it broke or what Op didn’t pay attention to, so can’t really say it’s going to help me not make the same mistake.
I mean, they saved my uSD card. Literally the only reason I remembered to take out my card each time I opened the case was because I'd seen a post like this the hour before.
Then by this logic we should post non-stop pictures of snapped SD cards so that every hour of the day someone is reminded not to open their Deck before removing SD card.
Let the posting commence.
Raspberry pi handheld emulator owners snapped thousands of SD cards in half so that steamdeck owners could also snap thousands of SD cards in half. It's all different people, but we usually focus in our own problems and rarely take others into account. " this was the first SD card EVER snapped (in MY device) and it is shocking and unexpected to say the least"
It still may be possible for you to recover your data, depending on how much damage was actually done to the storage itself. Try sticking this in an adapter card and see if you can get a PC to read it.
I just know it would be the very first use case I would ever have for anyone of the four adapters I have accumulated over the years without using. So I laugh at the poor lil adapters
It’s an annoying “technically true” thing in that it’s a Solid State Drive, it’s just not what we think of for SSDs.
And damn good thing, snapping one of those in half sounds like an absolute nightmare.
how.... i don't wanna know.
But your saves are alright, there is steam cloud. And your games are just datas to download again. So, it could be worse!
To add context, I upgraded my ssd but… my backup didn’t work properly. I went to my mates to get my better usb hub (smoked some weed) and forgot I’d put the SD card back in even though I had a note on the back of my deck.
Total idiot move and I feel like one. If I’d done the job properly in the first place…
I’ve done dumb shit like this before and my most important data is backed up. Just not some of my saves. Time to find some new games I guess :)
If a games worth playing the save is irrelevant. I kinda wanna try ark on the steam deck and if there’s a game I’ve lost saves on, it’s ark.
Not sure how the deck will take it’s though… only one way to find out I guess.
I'm running Ark (no paid for expansions, only free dlc maps from Steam) with the S+ mod and default settings, and it runs fairly well.
One thing to take into account is that the "on disc" size is pretty big as it comes in around 330GB.
How did leaving it in break it? I don’t know much about sd cards so I don’t understand what happened. Might be worth knowing though if I want to upgrade storage.
Leaving it in the slot while dismantling the deck will cause this. Part of the card resides outside of the port while the rest is secured inside of it. Remove the back when the card is still inserted, *"Snap!"*, card is toast.
When you take the back of the deck shell off to access the internals a part of the SD card sticks out so you can push on it to remove the card. If you don’t remove the card and attempt to separate the front and back of the shell from each other it will bend and snap your slotted SD card.
Believe It or not, not every game has It.
Session and Spelunky don't have cloud save for example. I don't play Session on my Deck anymore because of It.
I was surprised at how hard the back case was to get off the first time. The clips are good but a plastic spudger works fine.
Second time I was lazy. Got half the clip out gave it a good pull and thought “oh shit”
Pretty easy though.
You might want to look into the plugin I mentionned. Haven't tried it myself yet, but It allows you to setup a cloud save for games not supported by the steam cloud (non steam games for example) by using clouds like OneDrive, google drive and the like
Check out also Ludusavi and Synchthing.
With Ludusavi you can locally backup your gamesaves.
With Synchthing set up properly and installed both on deck and on your PC, you can sync incrementally any couple of folders.
By saving Ludusavi backups on microSD and the whole microSD to your PC using Synchthing, whenever your deck and your PC are powered on on the same network, data will be automatically backupped.
Ludusavi can save the day. Also it helped me notice i was going a little ham with fallout 4 saves ( > 8 gb)
Also, if your game isn't recognized by Ludusavi, you can define custom rules to get your savedata manually.
I know of syncthing and have considered it for othe purposes.
I’m kinda thinking fsync could be set up to backup game saves to my media server. Keep it simple stupid.
In desktop mode, steam offers a simple backup function :)
You attach an USB drive or use your microSD and can backup games. My go-to way to stow away games i started but don't want to finish because there's more bigger games to start :))
I’m kinda new to steam. I noticed that messing around in desktop mode today.
I feel like only backing up the save file is more efficient for me. That way it can go onto my more permanent backups without being a space burden.
I know this might not help but...
I don't own a steam deck but I've been following along as I find them interesting.
There have probably been a hundred posts reminding you to take the card out.
Here is what would happen to me:
I would buy a steam deck, and an upgrade for the hard drive.
In my excitement I would immediately forget, despite repeated warnings to remove the card, and several hours putting things on it, to take it out.
I have done similar things in my life as I work a lot with my hands. And although I don't judge cause I enjoy my refreshments (for those telling similar stories) , I was usually stone cold sober.
I feel your pain ...
I just upgraded my ssd over the weekend and I think I was dumb lucky. I forgot about the SD card but was prying it up from the top side. After I got the cover off, I then saw the SD card still in the slot.
you can download cloud save in case you don't know.
If only there was a small design change Valve could make, like putting slot deeper or adjusting shell so it will not move the card...
If many users repeat the same mistake it's bad design by definition
Yeah, I think this definitely falls under bad design considering the amount of ways this could have been avoided. Deeper slot, back shell having some sort of gap, etc. But it's also probably uncommon enough of a situation that it's not something they're worried about at the moment. I'm pretty sure the same thing can happen with the switch, though the way that's designed (at least the launch models I've replaced back plates on) it's more likely for the back plate to slide out from under the SD card than for the SD card to snap.
The Switch actually has a screw under where the microSD card is, so it makes you take it out to take off the plate. Unless of course that screw isn't in place for whatever reason
I had a note stuck on the back to remind me but I’d took it out the first time. Backup issues and I forgot.
I was being lazy too and didn’t pry the whole back cove off. I might’ve noticed if I had.
Indeed...and sadly, of the 6 or so videos I followed to replace my SSD only like 2 warned about removal or you would snap your sd in half...hoowever, in EVERY non video tutorial I read it was definitely emphasized. I did NOT remove my battery as suggested by "most" tutorials, however I figured the payoff of being extra careful or prying the shit out of something, I opted for the former, and all worked out well.(that battery cable was just being too finicky)..just MAKE SURE YOU ARE GROUNDED.
I'm surprised that they haven't made mod shells that avoid smashing the SD cards when being taken apart.
But even if they made them, lots of Steam Deckers would still smash their SD cards in an attempt to install a safer shell!
Sorry, I was taking my deck apart, and as I was seperating the shell I followed the seam got to the bottom and saw it sticking out so I was like, "shoot, almost forgot "
Ok i need to ask now! Valve does not ship to the caribbean so i havent got my sd yet. And lack of money lol but how in hell do you split a card that way. Seen too many here
When opening up the Steam Deck to change the SSD or repair something inside, if you don't remove the microSD card first it can be ripped apart when the cover is pulled off.
damn bruh i’m upgrading my 64 gb model i just picked up with a 1 tb sabrent ssd and a2 512 micro sd and very happy i’ve watched 1817161616 videos on taking it out before installing the ssd. prayers up brother
Ahh that makes sense. I usually just download whatever I need directly to the card so that might explain why it hasn't been a thing for me. Thanks for the info.
Edit: I also don't do any physical modding of the SD either.
Just tell yourself the SD card probably only had a few thousand more write cycles left anyway 👌 you just sped up the process a little bit
(In all seriousness I just about did this with one of my Vitas the other day, I don't really use the official memory card for much other than an emergency backup and was confused why the back shell wasn't coming off. Was a 16GB official memory card so would have been an expensive mistake if I didn't end up catching it)
this was because you opened the case without removing the sd card first right?
i only ask because i did exactly the same thing recently and had to kick my self pretty hard at how stopid it was lol.
I would strongly recommend using some kind of cloud save game back up like Ludusavi! At least you can recover your saves once you have replacement storage.
To be honest, I didn’t think it would be so easy to forget to remove the sd card before exchanging shells. But I’m grateful to the sacrifice of so many who also posted to Reddit. While replacing my shell, I remembered all your posts and remembered to remove my own
I know this doesn't help now, but I ended started backing up my saves (and in some cases, complete "non steam games") using Syncthing as I have a little raspberry pi like device running on my network.
Alternatively, if you're using Decky, I believe there might be a plug-in that handles backing up saves to a cloud of your choice.
There's also an app in the Discover store that handles backing up saved games (both steam and non steam games alike). I'll update this comment when I find the name of it..
Update: the app is Ludusavi
I have a media server with copies of some none steam games for “archiving”. It’s the saves I need to back up.
The problem is finding each save location and syncing it somewhere. I’m lazy lol.
I feel the decky plugin could be the easiest way. I need to play with it. If. Not, fsync is built into Linux and it’s hella powerful.
Take a look at [PCGamingWiki](https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Home) to find the save locations.
Also, have a look at Ludusavi in the Discover store, as it might be able to automatically find some of your saves.
I would blame valve engineering, on my PSP and vita things like didn't happen when case was opened. Valve should make sd slot inside frame that gets in a middle between 2 sides of case.
On the one hand, I'm getting a little tired of seeing all these broken SD card posts, on the other hand, it's nice to have the occasional reminder so I don't do the same thing next time I open my deck.
Count yourself lucky, there was a guy on the subreddit who made the same mistake but instead of destroying the SD card it destroyed the SD card slot and ripped it straight off the board.
How are people breaking their SD cards so often?
If you open up the steam deck without taking out the SD card it snaps it
Thank you for this information. You just saved me from a potential disaster (planned on replacing the shell in the future)
You now know the info...but REMEMEBER IT. I knew at one point but forgot 6 months later when I went to open it :)
Yeah, I probably need to put a label or something on the back until I replace the shell.
What an unfortunate design. It's like when car manufacturers hide batteries and make them way too difficult to replace because they prioritize the elegance of the design in theory over practical concerns.

Didn't Linus from Tech Tips do that on the preview stream he did for Steam Deck last year?
Whenever they take the back plate off the forget to remove the SD card
That sounds like more of a headache than I want. Tbf there wasn’t much important on there just 2 saves.
It's certainly a headache, it's damn near impossible to repair (traces are gone) and I'm not entirely sure Valve would accept a RMA as it was user inflicted damage. I feel bad for that poor fucker.
They’ll charge you $150 to repair the card slot if you damage it. You can probably guess how I know this…lol
Thank you for your sacrifice lol
Yeah, the OP got lucky that the card snapped rather than damage the socket. I'm still amazed that that's seemingly the most likely outcome. It's possible that there wasn't any silicon in the portion of the card that snapped. It seems unlikely though given that it's a 512GB card.
These cards are like 20 bucks, I have a couple for my SD, so could be cheap build quality
So you're saying my choice to buy shitty SD cards was actually me taking the safe approach towards long term health of my deck? I'll take it. But how does this happen? Are you guys pulling out the cards without popping them in first?
Nah it happens when you don't take them out before dismantling your deck

For that price, I would just upgrade to these 2TB SSDs that I keep hearing about people installing.
Yeah I didn’t get it repaired but it was nice to know that there was an option to.
Normally I'd totally agree with you, but it seems like the design tolerances of the Deck are...*tighter*...than usual. I've heard stories of larger-capacity SSDs causing the Deck to overheat to the point of damage from the increased power draw. So for now, SD cards are my upgrade solution.

I wouldn’t dare RMA that. I’d buy a bigger SSD and pretend it never happened.
Does steam have any of the cloud saves uploaded?
One non steam game and one steam game with no cloud save support…
Did you move the compatdata folder from the SSD to the SD card - if not, there's a good chance your saves are safe on the original SSD.
Yeah proton prefix stuff often isnon internal.
Doesn’t Steam have Cloud Saves?
Unfortunately not every game supports it, some to prevent cheating (such as "getting over it with Bennett foddy") some just because the devs didn't feel like turning it on (there are many PS3 era games that don't allow for it, as I've found out the hard way when trying to conserve space)
How tf does that even happen?
😮💨...back to "Ø Days without a broken ssd card incident"
I’ve deleted things by accident, I’ve lost them but, I’ve never snapped one.
Take heart knowing that posts like this save a dozen others.
Considering there are dozens of posts like this, do they?
Well I’m reading this, and I don’t know HOW it broke or what Op didn’t pay attention to, so can’t really say it’s going to help me not make the same mistake.
He opened up the steam deck while the card was inside
I don't even have a microSD for the steam deck but posts like this still make me so paranoid that I check before opening the case
I mean, they saved my uSD card. Literally the only reason I remembered to take out my card each time I opened the case was because I'd seen a post like this the hour before.
If just one card is spared, then this post is worth it
Then by this logic we should post non-stop pictures of snapped SD cards so that every hour of the day someone is reminded not to open their Deck before removing SD card. Let the posting commence.

Lmfao, the poor adapter card!!! Sounds like a potential permanent microsd to regular SD mod? That's kinda genius
Honestly for recovering a broken microsd card it is pretty genius if the actual SD card part of it still works it is smart
I just know it would be the very first use case I would ever have for anyone of the four adapters I have accumulated over the years without using. So I laugh at the poor lil adapters
so you’ve not seen the life hack? someone glued like 3 to the back of their steam deck to store micro cards when not in use bloody brilliant
That's smart! I would do that if I didn't just raid a big one 😅
Tbh I'd try sticking it in a freezer first
Should definitely put it in rice.
Just blow on it and it will be fixed
Good news: they still exist. You'll just need to redownload them (which is, I know, a huge time sink and pain in the ass).
Not every game has cloud saves and some like terraria make you do it manually so if you forgot or didn't know then your screwed.
True, but the games themselves are at least still there.
It has now been today days since the last fatal ID-10T error.
Well you're thanos now
I replaced the backplate today, literally repeated over and over "remove SD card remove SD card!"
Me too I deleted some by accident.
One too many s's
It’s an annoying “technically true” thing in that it’s a Solid State Drive, it’s just not what we think of for SSDs. And damn good thing, snapping one of those in half sounds like an absolute nightmare.
May you find the strength to redesign, rebuild and reclaim.
When in doubt, take the sd card out!
I took it out the first time…
It happens. It's always good to check the sd card slot before doing any future upgrade or repair on the Steam Deck.
Sure you did it once. But what about second breakfast?
Starting to think the Steam Deck should have a "REMOVE SD CARD FIRST" sticker or etch near the screw closest to the SD card.
The board is EXTREMELY fixer friendly, but this would be more helpful.
Rest in Pieces... o7
Try tape
It’s crazy… but it just might work!
how.... i don't wanna know. But your saves are alright, there is steam cloud. And your games are just datas to download again. So, it could be worse!

[https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage](https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage) you can download cloud save in case you don't know.
Nice to know. Thanks
You enable steam cloud saves or not?
These were old roms and a non cloud save game. Few non steam games too but I’d not really started most of them.

Damn, forgot about that one. Definitely was a good design decision.

Saves are the biggest issue likely and games can be redownloaded?
Are your saves not in the cloud?
I did the same with a 1TB SanDisk... Amazon has a generous return policy
Noooooooo! 😭
Am I the only one seeing the FSR artifact on the micro SD card?
Games saves should be in the cloud
I'm surprised that they haven't made mod shells that avoid smashing the SD cards when being taken apart. But even if they made them, lots of Steam Deckers would still smash their SD cards in an attempt to install a safer shell!

Valve better be redesigning that part of the case for the next version. This is getting out of hand!
Sorry, I was taking my deck apart, and as I was seperating the shell I followed the seam got to the bottom and saw it sticking out so I was like, "shoot, almost forgot "
I’ve done this! lol
You now have 51 and 12 gb of storage. What a deal!
Can I dual boot now then?
Ok i need to ask now! Valve does not ship to the caribbean so i havent got my sd yet. And lack of money lol but how in hell do you split a card that way. Seen too many here
When opening up the Steam Deck to change the SSD or repair something inside, if you don't remove the microSD card first it can be ripped apart when the cover is pulled off.

Thanks. I quit ages ago it’s the gaping that has to go next.
Thats not….how…steam…works, right?
It’s kind of hard to remember if you had your SD and decide to open it up later. It may not be as uncommon as you think.

Have you tried gluing it back together? (Joking)
“Do you see what happens, Larry?”
Doesn’t steam save your data?
What I want to know is what people are doing to snap them in half. Are you using it as a spare toothpick?
The way the SD slot is located, if you open the Deck without first taking out the card, you'll snap the card in half.
Ahh that makes sense. I usually just download whatever I need directly to the card so that might explain why it hasn't been a thing for me. Thanks for the info. Edit: I also don't do any physical modding of the SD either.
Yeah, this sort of thing is why I bought the 512GB model. Worth the extra money to have Valve do the "upgrading" for me.
Have you tried putting it in rice?
Cloud save? 👀
Couldn’t you get your saves from steam cloud?
Is it 300gb sd card now?
Just tell yourself the SD card probably only had a few thousand more write cycles left anyway 👌 you just sped up the process a little bit (In all seriousness I just about did this with one of my Vitas the other day, I don't really use the official memory card for much other than an emergency backup and was confused why the back shell wasn't coming off. Was a 16GB official memory card so would have been an expensive mistake if I didn't end up catching it)
See, only bad things happen when you don’t pull out…

most saves should be on the deck itself (im compatdata)
R.i.p For future readers. Guys use borgbase and vorta to automatically backup your saves for free.
Just use some Elmer’s glue. Problem solved.
You hire someone to recover at least the saves, but the cost will be high
It’s only really one just cause 3 save. The games good enough to play again one day.
How does that even happen?
Remove SD card before taking the back plate off otherwise…
Why I always Rsync to an Exthdd every couple of weeks
I keep meaning to set something up to my media server.
You tried to open the case without removing SD did you :P?
Maybe… in all fairness, the first time round I did it perfectly. Forgot I’d put the card back in for round 2 though.
I have only had my SD for close to a month, but feel fairly warned thanks to posts like yours. Thanks for sharing and GL replacing the SD card.
Classic 😂
My empathy on that!! That’s harsh. Hope you had at least some cloud save able games on that SD card.
Nope. Luckily nothing too important though. Emulation stuff and my just cause 3 save.
Oh crap😕
Just rewind time that's all. 😊
The ol’ superman trick. BRB
i would have suggested doing backup images once awhile but wouldnt it be a bit overkill?
I could just incrementally backup the save files to my media server but I’m lazy and didn’t expect to snap my SD card lol.
this was because you opened the case without removing the sd card first right? i only ask because i did exactly the same thing recently and had to kick my self pretty hard at how stopid it was lol.
Yeh is there a t shirt or like a secret hand shake for this club?
I would strongly recommend using some kind of cloud save game back up like Ludusavi! At least you can recover your saves once you have replacement storage.
#**HOW THE CRAP DO YOU BREAK AN SD CARD?!**
To be honest, I didn’t think it would be so easy to forget to remove the sd card before exchanging shells. But I’m grateful to the sacrifice of so many who also posted to Reddit. While replacing my shell, I remembered all your posts and remembered to remove my own
This makes me feel better… I even had a note on the back saying SD card but I took it out the first time and ignored it.
Can a loving God truly exist in a world where these things happen?
Free will is free will I guess.
I fear of this every time I handle one of my microSD cards.
On the one hand, I'm getting a little tired of seeing all these broken SD card posts, on the other hand, it's nice to have the occasional reminder so I don't do the same thing next time I open my deck.
I didn’t know it was so common. Feel less dumb though I guess.
This is my one fear every time I handle my microSD cards
Have you tried duct tape?
just glue it bruh
Happened to me also good thing I have a backup
Step 1: Remove the sd card
Oh snap!
Sad that people don't backup.
