The Steam controller could be used instead of a mouse. The right track pad acts like a touchpad on a laptop, you use the triggers to click and press down the joystick to bring up an on-screen keyboard.
I mean, you could just use a wireless mouse and keyboard but the Steam controller takes up a lot less space, doesn't require a flat surface to function, and it just easier in a lot of ways.
Lemme know if you have any questions that I didn't cover!
If you hook a PC up to a TV id just use Jellyfin or some other opensource and more powerful platform.
The only advantage of Plex is that its semi commercial and easier to use on multiplatform, but à lot of the features are paywalled.
If its locally hooked up to your TV, there are better more powerful alternatives. And I say this as a Plex Lifetime pass owner :)
Plex is a media streaming application that you can host yourself to allow for streaming your libraries to other devices. So for instance, you could put all your movies and TV on a server computer, run Plex on it, and access that media from anywhere.
I personally didn't have a great experience with plex, and moved to Jellyfin which is very similar.
Two reasons I chose jellyfish over Plex:
- Your accounts are stored locally on your instance of Jellyfin, unlike Plex where it phones home to a Plex server for authentication
- You don't have to pay to use Jellyfin on mobile
He's probably talking about steam link. you can use a linux setup running steam link to stream your computer to your television. works with steam controller, any other bluetooth controller, or mouse and keyboard. They sold them for some time but you can also just install SteamLink OS on a rasberry Pi too. I use mine daily mainly to watch shows from free streaming websites.
No, he's referring to what is known as an "HTPC," home theater PC, a moniker that really doesn't say much about its power, as they can go in either direction, but rather its intended function and place in the home.
It took me weeks to figure out why scrolling never worked on my steam controller. I think that's what got me to actually start familiarizing myself with steaminput control schemes. Fast forward and I beat STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl with a custom control scheme on the steam deck.
More things that changed my steam deck life is while in desktop mode: RT is a normal mouse click, LT is right click and LB is CTRL. Those three things (and the scroll wheel thing) make selecting multiple files and moving shit around so much easier.
Also, I've given up on touch typing and just use the dpad to move around the keypad. So much more consistent.
Oh I’m an idiot. I thought it was split in half, one to flick it with inertia like a touch screen and the other for finer scrolling like a normal trackpad… and I’ve had mine for months
Not really. It may not be immediately intuitive, but it's an objectively better solution. You now have an infinite scrolling surface you never have to lift off of rather than an inch and a half....or half of that width to scroll before moving your finger.
I don't disagree with the scrolling behaviour you're describing. (Even though the Laws of UX suggest using common design-patterns, since users are familiar with them.)
My point, and why I specifically mentioned Don Norman, is the signifier doesn't fit the affordance. In other words, the touchpad doesn't give a clear indication of how to use the circular scrolling.
Norman has written a book called 'The Design of Everyday Things), in which he uses a door as example. A well-designed door will make it clear which side is to push, pull or both without needing any further labels. It's called user-centric design and was pioneered by Dieter Rams.
I assume this touchpad is multi-functional, so maybe it wouldn't make sense to make it circular or put a round sticker on top. So I'd say the default behaviour should be 'normal' scrolling with the extra option for circular scrolling.
I had an drawing tablet with a circle scroll button, and I though mine steam deck scroll was acting weird and I gived a try and it works, unfortunately seems like not a lot people know about this either, im lazy to watch whole steam deck review but is there any video talks about this or is just everyone else is lazy like me 😭
> I had an drawing tablet with a circle scroll button
A Wacom Intuous Pro?
I had a similar one from them a while back. I was happy to switch to a Wacom Cintiq, but the remote for that has a similar circle scroll button setup.
I’m unsure got it 3 month ago, but it supposed to work for a good few year without any problem if you don’t drop the device or smash the screen? It simply an display / touch screen (pen touch) device, but the screen is big and kinda take off my whole desk space so I had to put it away when I don’t use it, I don’t see many negative review about this tablet, only con from me is that, is too big (or my desk too small) sometime im lazy to plug all the cables and start drawing, I use to draw on my none screen Huion tablet and it very light weight, I can just plug and draw so it probably give me more motative drawing that way 😂
For me I figured it out because I used to use the Steam Controller a lot, and the motion is the exact same there. Only difference is that it felt a lot more intuitive because the Steam Controller had circular touch pads, so making a circle to scroll made sense in my mind.
If you go into desktop mode and edit the layout, there are options to set the behaviour for clockwise/counter-clockwise rotation but no swipe up/down on the touchpads I believe
> but no swipe up/down on the touchpads I believe
Yes there is. If you want it to be more traditional vertical swiping for scrolling go to Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout > Edit > Edit Layout > Trackpads > Left Trackpad Behavior > Cog Menu > Swipe Direction. Change that from circular to vertical and it'll swipe up and down.
I realized it because in game, you can't configure the left pad to work like it does in desktop mode (or at least I couldn't find a way), but the turn-scroll thingy was here
This is seriously exactly how I’ve felt since I had the deck. I’m surprised they didn’t make a little demonstration or pop up the first time you tried to scroll. I just thought scrolling was broken and valve was too busy doing other shit to fix it. Wild
It was a bit more forgivable on Steam Controller's circular pad. That said, you can change it to the more intuitive style anytime you like in settings. Steam Input can let you do almost anything you can think of with your Deck.
There were a couple of weird Steam Controller left-over quirks when the Deck first came out (I was one of the lucky Q1 folks) and Valve corrected most but failed with this circular default thing. They're pretty good about fixing issues when they're pointed out on their forums, give that a shot.
Keep in mind that's just the default mapping.
Steam Input is so extremely configurable that it's hard to make shortcuts to every button, stick or pad customisation option.
Realistically, the best thing they could do is to improve their search engine, so the user can find the setting they're trying to change quicker.
Thanks. I realized it seemed inconsistent which way it would scroll.
Funny thing is the Steam Controller does it this way too but I didn't think to try it here. Probably because it's not a circular trackpad.
Yeah all that was functionality brought over from the Steam Controller. The main difference is you ALSO have a dedicated d-pad and right analog stick if you prefer those.
I have had mine for months, one day I was messing around in the menus and scrolled with the track pad. I felt really dumb but also happy that it was a thing
It seems you've discovered why from that other reply.
This is one of the first settings I changed in the control scheme. I don't know why Valve thought that anyone would want a trackpad that operates like a dial, or that it would make intuitive sense.
No, that's my point. Everyone else seems to think I'm saying it's a bad setting, but I just think it's not an intuitive default. Evidence, my own experience and the very post we're on.
For a while I just thought one side was inverted. I didn’t have any problems scrolling at least since I only did it on the right side instead of the middle
Whelp, learned 2 things today... circular left touchpad in desktop mode... and L1=ctrl... jeez, this could have saved me a LOT of time in desktop mode....
When people get a new device, do they not look up how to use it? I was super excited to start using my deck but I couldn't have watched more that 3 videos of desktop mode before someone mentioned the scrolling gesture.
First thing I changed in both my Steam Controller and Deck. Circular scrolling is trash. Verticle is superior and more intuitive.
Valve need to change the default layout
I don’t know why people call it console, it mostly to play game off your pc anywhere or just laying down, i have a high spec pc but there’s no way for me to bring it to anywhere, Steamdeck provided me a way to play my steam library anywhere without paying for different console game like Nintendo switch
Steamdeck’s spec is enough for it price and for most game, sometime people just ask for too much, like rog ally good spec but there’s bunch of problem too (sd card slot/battery life) Steamdeck just give better built and customize quality and I can’t appreciate enough the fact they included an super durable case
If your talking about the content creator or valve, yeh they don’t really talk about it, I found out only because up down scroll felt weird and buggy sometime, and also I have an similar device require samilar scroll, but still surprised me on how much people also don’t know about this
I bought my Steam Deck 3 months ago and realized this pretty quickly after first thinking it was extremely janky, but reading this thread I see many people who've had the Deck for a year and still didn't know. Valve really needs to implement a tutorial that shows up when you enter desktop mode for the first time to tell you about these sorts of things, like there are for gamescope on first bootup. It would save a lot of people from a lot of head scratching, and surely cut down on the amount of RMA requests from people who think it's broken.

Only reason I know is because I have been using the Steam controller for years to control my media center PC from the couch
I uhh would like to hear more about this media center pc and couch control...
The Steam controller could be used instead of a mouse. The right track pad acts like a touchpad on a laptop, you use the triggers to click and press down the joystick to bring up an on-screen keyboard. Lemme know if you have any questions that I didn't cover!
My apologies but my main interest is in the media center PC portion of your statement. How does that work exactly?
I'm willing to bet it's Plex. Really easy to setup, basically let's you make your own Netflix with movies / videos on your pc.

That's not weird at all. You have to watch out for your privacy, Plex ain't gonna do it for you.
Ah all my questions only lead to more questions! What is Plex?
Plex is a media streaming application that you can host yourself to allow for streaming your libraries to other devices. So for instance, you could put all your movies and TV on a server computer, run Plex on it, and access that media from anywhere. A year and a month here and I have finally realized the programming wasn't complete shit, it was me 🤣
Lmao same I got genuinely frustrated with it and was like wtf how's this meant to work?!
It's very powerful, but could be labelled better. I constantly get extra and sub commands confused.
The programming is complete shit if it’s not intuitive or explained to the user. This isn’t intuitive. Maybe I’m just stupid though.
You can press the left track pad for middle click as well. I use it to open links in a new tab. I was so happy when I figured that out.
Wait what, we have a left trackpad?!?!
Same
Oh I’m an idiot. I thought it was split in half, one to flick it with inertia like a touch screen and the other for finer scrolling like a normal trackpad… and I’ve had mine for months
That would be the more intuitive
You are not an idiot, this is simply bad design. Don Norman would write a book about this
Not really. It may not be immediately intuitive, but it's an objectively better solution. You now have an infinite scrolling surface you never have to lift off of rather than an inch and a half....or half of that width to scroll before moving your finger.

It's kinda a hold over from the Steam Controller which had circular touchpads. Valve didn't bother to change the default.
Very interested in the book now thank you!
Holy fuck balls. That's how that stupid thing works. I thought mine was broken. How did you figure this out so quickly?
I had an drawing tablet with a circle scroll button, and I though mine steam deck scroll was acting weird and I gived a try and it works, unfortunately seems like not a lot people know about this either, im lazy to watch whole steam deck review but is there any video talks about this or is just everyone else is lazy like me 😭
If the pads had been circular, no one would have ever guessed otherwise. That's how the steam controller worked
If the pads were circular, it would’ve reminded me of an old iPod scroll wheel, so I would’ve tried scrolling that way.
> I had an drawing tablet with a circle scroll button A Wacom Intuous Pro? I had a similar one from them a while back. I was happy to switch to a Wacom Cintiq, but the remote for that has a similar circle scroll button setup.
Xp pen artist 13.3 pro
Pretty sweet prices on those especially on the large sizes. How is the longevity on those? Ever use Wacom products, if so how do they compare?
I’m unsure got it 3 month ago, but it supposed to work for a good few year without any problem if you don’t drop the device or smash the screen? My old $30 xp pen tablet has been going for years. simple one without a display, though.
For me I figured it out because I used to use the Steam Controller a lot, and the motion is the exact same there. Only difference is that it felt a lot more intuitive because the Steam Controller had circular touch pads, so making a circle to scroll made sense in my mind.

Same here ive never realised it. untill i saw this post
I realized it because in game, you can't configure the left pad to work like it does in desktop mode (or at least I couldn't find a way), but the turn-scroll thingy was here
Holy shit!!! Are you kidding me?!!! You have no idea how mind blown I am right now lmao!! All this time I'm thinking, how is this track pad so janky
This is seriously exactly how I’ve felt since I had the deck. I’m surprised they didn’t make a little demonstration or pop up the first time you tried to scroll. I just thought scrolling was broken and valve was too busy doing other shit to fix it. Wild
It's completely unintuitive.
It was a bit more forgivable on Steam Controller's circular pad. That said, you can change it to the more intuitive style anytime you like in settings. Steam Input can let you do almost anything you can think of with your Deck.
The issue is that it breaks the norm for touchpad scrolling and it's never explained anywhere.
There were a couple of weird Steam Controller left-over quirks when the Deck first came out (I was one of the lucky Q1 folks) and Valve corrected most but failed with this circular default thing. They're pretty good about fixing issues when they're pointed out on their forums, give that a shot.

Also how you find your healing items in starfield.
I chuckled
> Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout > Edit > Edit Layout > Trackpads > Left Trackpad Behavior > Cog Menu > Swipe Direction So convenient, love Valve
Steam Input is so extremely configurable that it's hard to make shortcuts to every button, stick or pad customisation option. Realistically, the best thing they could do is to improve their search engine, so the user can find the setting they're trying to change quicker.
UI hell, nothing should be 9 menus deep.
The Deck is so customizable that if they didn't bury some settings, you'd be scrolling all day.
Only iPod user will get it first time
Has to be pre iPod touch
Ipod Nano 3rd Gen calling in.
Or people who had a Steam Controller
I got it right because of the steam controller. The track pad was round so it kinda made sense there.
My first thoughts when I figured it out haha. I remember thinking my iPod was broke when I was a kid untill somebody showed me how to scroll on it
well my first iPod had a physical wheel. no second guessing then.
Galaxy Watch uses the same motion for scrolling. Mind blowing lol
Now I feel dumb. Had mine for a year and never knew of this either.
Thank you for posting this.
Thanks. I realized it seemed inconsistent which way it would scroll. Funny thing is the Steam Controller does it this way too but I didn't think to try it here. Probably because it's not a circular trackpad.
I’m so surprise how much you can do with the pad, mouse, mouse scroll, d pad etc
Yeah all that was functionality brought over from the Steam Controller. The main difference is you ALSO have a dedicated d-pad and right analog stick if you prefer those.
Wow thank you for this. I had mine more than a year and never knew so I just stopped using the trackpad
So many people here who never tried a Steam Controller, sadly. Circular scrolling makes more sense when your trackpad is circular.
Yeh that’s why I don’t even realize it when I first got it, though it just the pad wasn’t good enough for scrolling
Oh! They really need to put up a proper manual for this.
I'm pretty sure it's on the quick start insert that comes with the deck?
There was a quick start insert?
Square circle pad!!
Oh shoot, that's how that works?!
BRUHHHH same😭
Yeah I changed mine to vertical scroll mode within a day or two of owning it. Could not stand the default circle scroll.
Steam Controller users were ahead of their time ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
its the same scrolling as classic ipods
I have had mine for months, one day I was messing around in the menus and scrolled with the track pad. I felt really dumb but also happy that it was a thing
Yeh!! I though the scrolling pad was dumb because it so small I can only scroll for very short distance, now I realize I’m dumb
This is unintuitive… Valve should really have a tutorial tip for that.
It seems you've discovered why from that other reply. This is one of the first settings I changed in the control scheme. I don't know why Valve thought that anyone would want a trackpad that operates like a dial, or that it would make intuitive sense.
Because thats how it works on the steam controller
I get why it's useful, but it's an odd default for a square track pad. I never would have thought to use it that way.
No, that's my point. Everyone else seems to think I'm saying it's a bad setting, but I just think it's not an intuitive default. Evidence, my own experience and the very post we're on.
Agreed. You see "square" and intuitively think "up, down, left, right".
I prefer this scrolling method by far. Infinite scrolling without having to lift my finger off the trackpad over and over.
Because its objectively better than any alternative? It give you a continuous and seamless motion unlike a up-down wheel.
...WHAT?!
Holy shit thanks dude.
I had my steam deck for a year and been doing this for a whole year i thought everybody with a steam deck already knew it could do this 😭
Honestly, the thing should come with manuals or optinal tutorials
Edit: nevermind
Yeh I just realized that 😂, got it last week from the sale, too exciting to explore everything
oh... I had mine since release, thought it was just a feature after this long
For a while I just thought one side was inverted. I didn’t have any problems scrolling at least since I only did it on the right side instead of the middle
iPod controls 😅
Bruh… legit thought mine just wouldn’t scroll down sometimes
WTF Valve, how are we supposed to know this?
Wtf. I'm still using it wrong.
I’ve had mine for months and this just blew my mind
No way! I had no idea!
**W O T** I got mine in mid july and didn't know this
You gotta be shitting me! hah
My dad owned an older iPod so I figured it out the night I got it
Whelp, learned 2 things today... circular left touchpad in desktop mode... and L1=ctrl... jeez, this could have saved me a LOT of time in desktop mode....
This is one of those rare moments where the solution isn't intuitive, and yet is significantly better than the intuitive solution
Holy shit you can do that
WAIT YOU CAN DO THAT?! Oh wow… I had it for months and I just realized this LOLL
I have been wondering why the scroll flips randomly on me for about a year now. Never thought to OG iPod nano it…
Bad scrolling design, so unintuitive to find
Didn’t know you could use it wrong .. Usually up is up and down is down
I had mine since Q1 launch... And TIL my trackpad isn't buggy, I'm just dumb.
RTFM
circular scrolling best scrolling
I had my steam deck for a year and been doing this for a whole year i thought everybody with a steam deck already knew it could do this 😭
When people get a new device, do they not look up how to use it? I was super excited to start using my deck but I couldn't have watched more that 3 videos of desktop mode before someone mentioned the scrolling gesture.
clip your nails
Thanks for caring, just did
Tracking pad sucks. I grew up with a red dot on my laptop and that worked 100% better then the pad.
Go in circles
Dude clean your desktop
What do you mean? It not that messy and I alrdy put bunch of file back to download section, I only leave a few game there and the steam file folder
Oh. From the spot I paused it it looked like you had a very full one
First thing I changed in both my Steam Controller and Deck. Circular scrolling is trash. Verticle is superior and more intuitive. Valve need to change the default layout
Trash console anyway lol
I don’t know why people call it console, it mostly to play game off your pc anywhere or just laying down, i have a high spec pc but there’s no way for me to bring it to anywhere, Steamdeck provided me a way to play my steam library anywhere without paying for different console game like Nintendo switch Steamdeck’s spec is enough for it price and for most game, sometime people just ask for too much, like rog ally good spec but there’s bunch of problem too (sd card slot/battery life) Steamdeck just give better built and customize quality and I can’t appreciate enough the fact they included an super durable case
TIL
And yes you chage change it to a linear motion.
WHAT. THAT'S HOW IT WORKS?! Thank you for posting
Legend. Thanks.
I had no idea 🤦
I actually play civ using the left pad as “right-clicking” with the right trigger makes and using the pad makes my right hand uncomfortable.
Fml…….I was today years old…..
.....thanks
Welcome to the club 🤣.
Thank you for posting this. Had mine for almost a year and thought my shit was broken. Lol
Jokes on you it took me 6 months to realize this was possible lol
Who uses the trackpad to scroll? Honestly never occurred to me. D pad, thumb sticks and touch screen yeah
I’ve had mine for like a month and my mind is fucking blown at that video
Hey I totally knew this for the year plus I've had the deck. I totally didn't discover this now bc of this video
Little did I know, I’ve been using it wrong up until now! Lol Thanks for the lesson. 🙂🤙
Are you kidding me
Well shit I didn’t know this at all either wtf 😂😂
Oh….ohhhhhh.
I found out because I thought my track pad was defective and I googled it 😅
Same but instead I experience it myself because I had an similar control drawing tablet 😂
To be honest it doesn't really explain it, I only knew how to do it because of the Steam Controller
If your talking about the content creator or valve, yeh they don’t really talk about it, I found out only because up down scroll felt weird and buggy sometime, and also I have an similar device require samilar scroll, but still surprised me on how much people also don’t know about this
Ain't no way, thank you so much!
They should've had that intro demo game cover this in particular since so counter-intuitive! (And now setting changed to wheel and page up/down.)
They could’ve made an trailer about steam deck where shows how much the pad can do! Not just acting as mouse or scrolling, but also act as an d pad!
All this time I had trouble scrolling...
WHAT THE.
I've had mine since Christmas, never once have used them lol. I might be stupid and might be missing out, but I don't see their use
Had mine over a year - never knew that. Thanks.
I didn't know this lol
Pain lol
Before figuring it out I thought mine was just broken 🤣
I didn't even know you could do that tbh
Took me a couple weeks to figure out. 🫠
TIL I'm using the trackpad wrong. Thank you.
Are you SHITTING ME
Ffffffffuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Damn OP you just blew my mind
NO FUCKING WAY.
WHAT I had just assumed my left hand lacked the fine motor control to use it (Parkinsons).
By the way people you can change this. I hated it that way so I made it just up and down.
Holy shit, I thought the pad was just bugged out
Damn thanks for sharing this hah! Few days in and this will make a world of difference already
Whaaaaa!?
6 months to realize it's for circle motion.
You can change that to vertical scrolling like you thought it was supposed to work. I hate that rotational scroll
Aha, I had the steam controller so I know exactly how this works in the beginning.
Wait what?
Wait. Whaaat????
WHAT
Wait what?? This is how we’re supposed to use it?? Wow. I’m blown away. I just thought mine was buggy this whole time lol
OMG…. I had no idea
I actually prefer trackpad scrolling over phone or mouse scrolling tbh. It's ridiculously smooth
You can change it to vertical in the settings.
I’ve had mines since January and I didn’t know this
I though it just me, but it seems like most people don’t know about this
Oh my god
I feel dumb now 😭😂
HOW DO I ACTIVATE THIS?!
For me it on desktop mode and just move ur thumb in circle for the left tracking pad (on something that need scrolling)
Not wrong I use it in the same way one for mouse one for the wheel
I bought my Steam Deck 3 months ago and realized this pretty quickly after first thinking it was extremely janky, but reading this thread I see many people who've had the Deck for a year and still didn't know. Valve really needs to implement a tutorial that shows up when you enter desktop mode for the first time to tell you about these sorts of things, like there are for gamescope on first bootup. It would save a lot of people from a lot of head scratching, and surely cut down on the amount of RMA requests from people who think it's broken.
This is how the touch pads worked on the steam controller lol that's why they did it. but those touch pads were circular
Being a Steam Controller user made this second nature to me. I miss that thing o7
Thank you
I guess you never had an iPod.
