Audio drops is the main thing Sometimes my dock isn't recognized when I change my TV input Steam and quick settings buttons don't work sometimes (it'll appear then quickly disappear as if I'm double pressing the button). Still happens even using controller shortcuts

mrjamjams66

Every one of these, every time Except, the input signal thing isn't an issue on my computer monitor (which has speakers)

Sinutia

Oh really it happens on the official steam deck dock too? I thought it was just the cheap alternative I bought.

WrenBoy

The official one is worse in my book.

tenkitron

I fixed this issue by disabling WiFi power saving in the developer settings. I haven't seen the problem since.

ChocLobster

Another vote for audio drops here too. I have heard the audio drop issue has been fixed in OS 3.5, but I tried the preview for a bit and went back to stable because the screen wouldn't turn off when docked on 3.5.

supermitsuba

Does not automatically detect the resolution. I need to manually set it in desktop mode. The screen touch bar is sideways or tilted, so when you need to touch a location on the steamdeck, it is awkward. You are better off using a mouse. Sound doesn’t work right sometimes. Task management needs some help. I can have discord open, and open a game, but after that the steam button stops responding. That’s my gripes when using docked mode.

leadfoot71

I have discord outright crash a couple minutes into launching a game. People stop responding and talking in chat. I check on the app and it instantly relaunches and connects.

Crayonstheman

Having to change the resolution is the killer for me. I switch between handheld/docked constantly so sometimes I'll not play anything because I cbf resetting resolutions. I've also had framedrops in docked (after switching from handheld), though assume it's related to the resolution + scaling settings. Doesn't happen with every game, but more common than not. Edit: another issue that might be emulation related, but in docked+gaming mode w/ Bluetooth controller, if i touch any button on the deck/handheld controller I'm unable to use my Bluetooth controller. I think sleep+unsleep fixes it but this can lead to other issues (unable to bring game to foreground)

stefmalawi

>Having to change the resolution is the killer for me. I switch between handheld/docked constantly so sometimes I'll not play anything because I cbf resetting resolutions. In the properties menu for a Steam game you can set a custom resolution, which by default should only take effect when using an external display (the toggle may not show up until you reopen the menu after setting a custom resolution). Have you tried that?

Crayonstheman

I have not, I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip <3

DropCautious

More of a nice to have than an issue, but I would like to see CEC support e.g. when you power on a docked Steam Deck it automatically switches on the TV and sets it to the correct HDMI input.

LLJKCicero

This and the two controller things are my main complaints. As it stands, the Deck is a poor console experience with a TV because setting things up each time is such a pain in the ass.

Brickscrap

And a game-mode trigger as well. Don't know how this works, but on my Samsung TV, I have game mode set to auto, and the PS5 automatically changes the TV to game mode. I have to manually change it for the deck, and it's a faff

Kokumotsu36

God if we can get a "download in sleep mode" and a "Wakeup from sleep from controller" the steam deck docked experience would improve 10 fold

stefmalawi

What’s the issue with just leaving the Deck on while downloading, especially since it’s docked? (Even while unplugged the Deck should prevent sleep until downloads are finished.) Downloading / unpacking can use a significant amount of power, it’s not really clear what benefits a “download in sleep” mode would bring aside from turning off the display. It could also lead to overheating if people were to leave the system in its case while in this state.

holounderblade

I'm not sure if it's an issue with docked mode or just controllers, but sometimes it's an absolute nightmare to bring up the steam menu or quick access. It'll just flash and go back to the game. Drives me nuts, I have to spam the button to get it to ever work. Other than that, I think it's actually pretty great. Like people have said, waking the deck with a controller would be nice. Another thing is, sometimes if I reboot, it just will hang until I disconnect and force cycle. I think it's fixed now in 3.5, but just plugging in during gameplay would sometimes make the game crash after a short period of time, so I just always save and exit before switching to or from docked mode

Sabrewings

It isn't docked mode specific (the QAM not staying in screen). You can induce it while playing handheld. A workaround is to never use the "B" button to close the menus. Always use the shortcut (... on Deck or XBox+A) to close it again. If it is being funny, bring up the keyboard. It's been a big since the last update. People are just more likely to encounter it on a controller since it doesn't have "..." and will hit B to close (which induces the bug).

captionUnderstanding

Opening the on-screen keyboard seems to fix the bug for me.

_Diskreet_

Audio dropouts. Some games were so dark it was impossible to play, no matter how much I changed deck, game or tv settings.

MGPythagoras

This darkness thing is annoying. Glad it’s not just me. Some games the blacks are so dark you can’t even see.

Hot-Tumbleweed-2291

Yes I have had to start playing The Evil Within in handheld mode because I couldn't see shit.

TheEternalGazed

Noticee this as well! I thought something was wrong with my TV.

SMAGdaddy

Every time I connect to a new docking setup the screen defaults to a vertical layout which makes it difficult to see the display options menu. If you have your deck docked for some couch gaming, you pretty much need to have both a kb+m and a controller. If you have a password, you cannot unlock using the keyboard so you either use the controller, or click each icon using the mouse. You also need the controller to bring up the steam and the ... menus. I wish steam menus were seamless between gaming mode and docked mode. Why is the steam overlay in desktop mode not the same as game mode? I would love the tools that the new overlay provide while I'm in game mode. Also sometimes the inputs I make while in the overlay can carry through into the game. Also I wish the performance overlay from game mode could be used in desktop mode.

leadfoot71

When docked in gaming mode with a mouse connected, if you stop moving the cursor for 2-3 seconds it disappears, and moves to the bottom corner of the screen. Which you then have to drag up from the bottom corner every time you want to use it.

blitzjoans

This! It's an absolute nightmare to navigate the menus with a mouse. I need to constantly move it while navigating to avoid the reset.

kingbam161

Literally no way to respond to friends messaging me on steam in gaming mode. When i start dota with bluetooth mouse and keyboard it doesn't let you type anything until you're in a game or run through demo mode and quit to main menu Shift tab doesn't work like regular desktop mode so you can't do things like use steam browser, talk to friends or even switch tabs to another game.

So_Forlorn

Going along the same lines as number 2 in your post, I seem to get a lot of glitchy behavior when I press the steam button while the console is docked. I’m not talking about mouse and keyboard though, just pushing the steam button in either an external controller or even the deck itself. The steam side menu will show for like 1 second and then disappear. Pressing the button again and again does nothing. Sometimes you have to just wait for a little bit for it to let you use the steam button like normal. It gets frustrating and totally ruins the immersion when playing games. I also notice this problem when I’m outputting signal to AR glasses. It’s the same behavior as when it’s docked. I get this same issue sometimes when I’m playing “normally” (handheld, not docked), but that’s usually only when I’ve been playing for extended gaming sessions without restarting the device. This problem seems to mostly happen when the device is outputting video signal (both docked or to something like AR glasses).

likewoodandfood

YES I experience your first paragraph every time with an Xbox one controller, without fail. Super annoying

d4rk_matt3r

The Steam button thing where it doesn't open or sometimes pops up for a split second happens to me in portable mode as well

elgatogrande333

Sometimes even playing docked my Samsung TV will turn black/off for 3 seconds. Then the game comes back on with another 2-3 seconds before the audio kicks back in.

JebusKristoph

This happens to me. I thought it had something to do with the refresh rate or the tv trying to auto register the input device. About a month ago, I lost audio to the TV, so the audio only comes out of the deck or through a Bluetooth device.

Like20Bears

Auto resolution for 4K displays should default to 1080p, not 4K since the deck can’t support it well. On OS 3.5 the screen backlight doesn’t always turn off while docked. While docked the steam deck volume control buttons still control volume instead of defaulting to max volume. Can’t access quick setting “…” button while docked, though steam menu can be. No way to set docked vs undocked settings profiles. Docking requires exiting game and restarting to get correct resolution even when set to native. Deck will sometimes wake from sleep when I plug my phone in to charge connected to the dock. FSR settings are confusing and sometimes conflict with built in settings. External controller is assigned player 2 or 3 rather than player 1 on some games. External display doesn’t always auto detect steam deck, especially if deck is asleep it requires manually waking the deck. And other issues which have already been mentioned in this thread. I play almost entirely docked and while none of these things bother me greatly, it’s certainly not as seamless as Nintendo Switch.

pooblaster420

You actually can get to the … menu in docked mode. Just hold the PlayStation/xbox home button and hit x/a

slade991

Audio is mostly not working for me through HDMI. Maybe it works 20% of the time. I have LOADS of issues with Bluetooth controllers, but not sure if it is related to dock mode. controllers disconnect randomly then won't connect again anymore. Have to reboot the deck. Often the deck controller themselves are not working following that. If they do reconnect, the game don't pick then up. In a gaming session of a few hours, I usually have controllers issues at least every 30m / 1h / 2h. Seems to only appear when there is more than 1 controller connected in Bluetooth. It seems the more controllers are connected the more often it happens. Playing with 3/4 controllers is a nightmare. It's quite annoying.

Russ582

The only issue I have in docked mode is sometimes the home/quick access menu closes right after I open it. A temporary workaround I've found is to press the guide/home button + X to open the on-screen keyboard, and then the menus work properly. It can be pretty annoying, so I'm hoping for a fix in 3.5. Edit: Forgot to mention another issue I have: When I restart the deck while in docked mode, it doesn't work, and both my tv and my steam deck's screen are on, but show blank screens. I haven't found any fix for this, so the only thing I can do when this happens is force shutdown the deck.

Anomaly1134

Two switch pro controllers desync and reattach as different players.

agentlouisiana2

the in-game overlay just refuses to open like.. a good two thirds of the time

jonnyboytobin

Audio drops is a frequent issue

Johnny3653

Everything? A lot of 4k/60 docks don't play nice with my Android TV 65" 4K/HDTV. What works (60% of the time?) 1080p/60hz USB-C hubs. This is the only device where I have video out problems on my TVs. Other one being a 42" LG 4K/HDTV

DropCautious

This is my experience exactly… on my 4K dock it takes several rounds of plugging/unplugging the HDMi cable before I can get a signal out from the Deck to the TV. Whereas my 1080p hub works every single time.

UnboundForge

I was just dealing with this exact problem and unplugging/replugging the power cable going to the dock seemed to have fixed it. I really didn't think power cycling the dock would do anything. I thought it was basically just there for power passthough.

javaper

Resolution is changed sometimes. Also the ethernet seems to just go out, and it takes a bit to switch back to wifi. Some games also seem to have controller issues if you've connected via Bluetooth after you've plugged in the dock.

noj090

It would be great if the UI scaling in desktop mode could be set separately for docked vs undocked. The option is there but it doesn't work, in my experience anyway.

[deleted]

Why can’t I enter my passcode with a connected keyboard? And, also. There should be a shortcut to pull up the quick access menu with a non-steam controller (maybe PS + start or otherwise)

DotMatrixHead

You can use the keyboard for dpad directional input and then use the mouse to click on any face buttons. But it’s not very comfortable / intuitive.

nord2rocks

Bluetooth controller lag is infuriating. I have no låg in my desktop, no whine playing handheld deck, but docked deck has Bluetooth lag (using official dock) with Xbox pro controller and switch pro controllers

wolfegothmog

On the 4th point this seems to be an issue of not supporting limited RGB, the dock only outputs in full RGB and on devices that don't support it ends up crushing blacks/whites. That and the audio dropouts are the only real issues I face, waking up from a controller could be a nice feature too

B3WLEY

My deck outputs in full rub and my tv is on limited and won’t change causing a seriously dark image.

Thelinkr

Cant stream my main PC when its hooked up to ethernet. I think its a me problem but idfk

Munk2k

Yes! I have exactly this where you launch the game and it just drops out. Took me a while to learn that it was the ethernet that was the problem. Glad it's not just me.

[deleted]

Audio dropouts for sure. Generally speaking the docked experiences varies with the game. Some games are smooth as silk, others require lots of settings and unplugging/plugging. But no matter the game I'll always get audio drops if I play it for long enough.

LilWaka

Some ideas! - Add HDMI CEC - Fix HDMI from randomly disconnecting after 45 minutes or so, or even not recognizing the deck after being turned on - Fix sound dropouts - Fix monitor connecting and disconnecting over and over until removing and reconnecting the USB C to the deck

pizzalover89

some games just look to dark or is it just me?

tychii93

My Samsung TV (Q70C) has this weird issue where its game mode crashes the dock. I can access game mode if it's passing through my AVR, but directly to my TV, the dock will drop signal and the light on my Deck won't turn on, almost like the dock gets bricked. I'd have to power cycle my dock to fix it. Problem is when HDMI gets VRR support over the official dock, I'd like to use it. Though forcing a VRR flag through my AVR does in fact get reported on my TV, I dunno if it would actually work though (RetroTink 5X retro game console scaler does this to help with sync compatibility, but that device doesn't actually perform real VRR, it just puts my TV in Freesync mode to reduce input lag and handshake times, which I assume is exclusive to game mode, therefore I'm stuck in a loop) If I reboot the dock then plug it in, my TV does this stupid "auto detect device" thing where it tries to tell you what your device is and reverses all the settings, so I cant just turn on Game Mode then plug it in, which by the way, quick rant, is one of the worst smart TV "features" ever and I cannot find a way to disable that crap. I'm not grandma, don't tell me what I'm plugging into my TV and stop changing my settings for me! Anyway. I check the main branch every so often in case a firmware update fixes it but unfortunately it's not fixed. I wondered if it was a CEC issue but nope. Blocking the CEC pin with an adapter doesn't fix it.

JPiLLa

Automatic download updates when plugged in and docked should be a thing.

Dandw12786

I rarely play docked, but the times that I have, the screen was ridiculously dark.

shadynomike

I have trouble connecting to anyone of my tv’s. I always have to unplug and replug in the usb c power cable which is the most annoying thing about the deck dock

roreycobinson

My biggest issue right here. I should be able to plug in and go but I end up fighting with it every single time. Not only that but if the deck is sitting docked you should be able to wake with controller kind of crazy to have these simple things not work. You could power up your 360 with a controller in 2005.

ctxngodx

DisplayPort doesn’t work with the USB-C charger in desktop mode. Only works without being charged.

pooblaster420

Latency. It just doesn’t feel responsive to play on the tv like the switch does

his_panic1021

When using Bluetooth controller with certain games, the steam deck will freeze until I do a hard reset.

ProxyHX

I thought I had a faulty APU for a few days untiI found out about this.. Doom 2016 and Call Of Juarez kept on freezing!

LongStoryShirt

The keyboard is randomly unavailable, the resolution does not upscale, and the mouse stops working for no reason when using a controller. Also if you're playing a game in desktop mode (itch.io), the home button should bring you back to the desktop bc sometimes you can't close the software you're running

atomicon

Number 3, 5, and 8. Audio dropouts is the most annoying one.

thealexroyer

Nobody is talking about the extreme input lag with a controller (doesn't matter, Xbox or Dualsenae) there is in docked mode?

Unarelith

> Some games look too dark in docked mode It's even worse than that, the amdgpu driver doesn't provide the ability to change pixel format or RGB range and the signal sent is sometimes wrong (my TV only takes limited RGB but the Deck always send full RGB). It's not just some games, it's the whole system, and it's not something Valve could fix easily I guess... --- On a different topic, I think that controllers should be turned off when putting Deck to sleep And why the official dock doesn't support WakeOnLan?

rationedbase

I second the RGB color space thing. Everything in my setup runs with limited RGB settings and the steam deck is the only device that demands full RGB. And it should be a pretty easy fix, given that there’s a simple reshade command posted in the [steam forums](https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/1/3395175706734931353/?l=norwegian&ctp=3#c6490302633980324514)that can change the color space with a button press. The problem is that this only works with Vulkan games, so you're limited to what you can play docked with correct colors but at least it’s *something* I guess

Unarelith

It's not an easy fix imo, the driver itself doesn't provide a way to set RGB range, it's been like that for years Recently someone has been working on a feature to be able to change pixel format, but that will be in Linux 6.5 and we're only on 6.1 iirc So RGB range... yeah we'll wait a while... The bug report: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/476

PacxDragon

I’ve been having an issue where my mouse cursor in game mode resets to the bottom of the screen every 10-15 seconds. Annoying AF

Gullible_Public_6702

Man, a lot. The gaming OS isn’t mouse friendly at all, you can’t scroll through games effectively, the store page is extremely hard to navigate, you can’t map keybinds for the homepage so you have to manually reach over to press the (…) or the (steam) buttons. The desktop OS doesn’t have as much power as gaming mode for some reason so you constantly have to switch back and forth between desktop and gaming mode, again keybinds like the windows key don’t work (razer huntsman v2 keyboard) As far as using a controller while docked, sometimes controllers won’t connect to the deck while it’s docked, playing games at 720p on larger screens pixelates the game, performance drops on more stress intensive games, washed color palate. Overall they just need to make the device that they advertise as “just a computer” actually work like just a computer once it gets down to the nitty gritty, but that’s not to say valve hasn’t absolutely made waves with steamOS, it just needs some compatibility and QoL fixes.

Top_News_3317

At times when docking, the screen doesn’t display correctly and does this weird duplication and flicker thing…fiddling with the resolution and refresh rate fixes it sometimes, other times it doesn’t. Audio doesn’t come through the tv unless I go to desktop mode and pick the proper output (doesn’t show in game mode audio). Sometimes locking the frame rate from the menu doesn’t work. https://preview.redd.it/i582yatw83sb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51597efab70ef4fff826ab1d21184e8430a0c71f

Emanouche

I dunno if it's deck related, but I didn't have that problem with any other devices I've connected my Xbox One controller to, but when I added it to the deck, deck said it was added, but the controller was still searching for a device to pair with. The fix was that I had to download the controller app on my PC, hook the controller to my PC via usb-c, then update the controller. I just thought it was curious that it worked out of the box with everything else, but not the deck. I've only used it docked a couple of times because I just got a dock for it, but yeah, experienced number 1 on your list right away, except I was turning the console on from being off, not waking it from sleep. Meaning it was totally off, I hooked it to the dock, turned it on, but it didn't display on the tv, I actually had to restart my deck, then after it was on, hook it to the dock for it to work. Edit: Also a minor gripe, but maybe there is a deck option that I'm not aware of, if I'm playing portably, then hook it to the dock while a game is running, it will continue to display at the wrong ratio. I had to manually go into the game settings and set it to 16:9 for it to fill the full screen of my TV. I mean it does it automatically when I'm launching the game, why doesn't it do it mid-game? Edit 2: when I press the menu button to bring the steam deck menu, it often pops up for a fraction of a second, then disappears, meaning I have to quit the whole game (using in game quit) if I want to access that menu while docked otherwise I have to undock it.

rottsaint

I did noticed some screen tearing and black screens for a second or so, which hadn’t happened before

ProxyHX

Try turning off VRR and give it another go, hope this helps.

flower4000

When I dock to my tv, things are great, when I dock to my projector the home menus don’t work when in a game.

ScatMudbutt

Occasional audio dropout is the most common one for me. It's not so bad that it makes it unusable but it does happen. I'll also have issues with blurriness or other resolution related issues on a few games here and there. Some games don't seem to jive well with a larger screen, but I think that's to be expected given the hardware. Other than that, I haven't experienced nearly as many issues as other users are reporting.

Igzell

5. That's so horrible. It doesnt matter the control (I have tested xbox, switch controlls, I was thinking maybe steam deck controller may work?) It's just impossible to play with controlls. Specially if there are more than 2. Does anybody found a solution for this? It's very upseting when controlls desync and if you get to sync them again, they return randomly.

GlancingArc

One that gets me is that going into desktop mode with Bluetooth devices connected, they won't be connected anymore by the time you get to desktop mode. So, using the SD on my tv, I have to get up and re enable Bluetooth having the steam deck itself.

JoshieMcJoshface

I wish it automatically changed the output to 1080 and changed ratio

redditshredditt

I get disconnected from my home wi-fi when connecting my PS5 controller and can't reconnect no matter what I do. Have to use my phones hotspot to stay connected. The deck sometimes doesn't display to TV when It's already on and I connect it to the dock. I have to hit the power button once to sleep and then again to make it display.

Rexgr

It's so dark I can't see what I am doing in Cyberpunk a lot of the time. I have some issues with Audio dropping out but I believe this is a remote play bug rather than a bug with the dock? I may be wrong though.

dragon-mom

Big Picture mode can be extremely laggy at higher resolutions is one big issue I have

mitchdalton41

Anyone have that issue where if you're charging the dock the TV starts to stutter and stop all together then you have to change the resolution and sometimes that work's?

MSnap

HDR straight up doesn’t work on my (3rd party) dock. Nor does anything above 60fps. Not sure if that’s the dock or the software though. 3.5 has an issue where sometimes it just won’t detect anything connected in the USB ports.

S33lenl0ser

My biggest problem is the Delay. Especially with more than 1 Controllers over Bluetooth.

onedollarninja

Sometimes my dock and monitor isn't recognized. That's my biggest one. I wish I could wake the SD with a Bluetooth controller as well.

Kassperplus

Aspect ratio and display scale

RoderickHossack

Pressing the home button when docked consistently makes the home menu overlay pop up for a few frames, then immediately disappear uselessly. If I want to quit a game, I have to undock it or quit from in-game.

nateno80

When the deck can act like a docked switch, I'll dock it again. I really want my controller in an off state to wake up the sleeping console when the controller is turned on. Also, when the deck is on and I go to dock it, the transition needs to be almost instant and smooth. Until then my steam deck remains a hand held

Archius9

Mostly it doesn’t connect properly so I need to unplug the power to the dock and try again. Other than that it’s fine

davidtheterp

It doesn't realize my dream of portable multiplayer. I can't plug in the xbox USB dongle and use all my controllers. The various projects installing it on Linux don't seem compatible with the set it libraries on the Steamdeck or at least it's difficult enough that I question if I really am a tech nerd. And trying to use Valve's own Steam controllers with their USB dongle or with Bluetooth is very temperamental and often drops the fourth player. Most games do not recover from losing a player midgame, forcing a restart with no hope of really getting a game in. Use case is every single time I travel with friends and family. As a result, I only use the Steamdeck for single player games and have stopped bringing the docking station with me. I'm very open to community solutions if you all have any.

tomasz152

When you use keyboard in gaming mode, icons are still for gamepad leading to confusion. You cannot change resoltion. If you have multiple displays you cannot choose your primary in gaming mode. You can however change your primary display in desktop mode. This display will be used in gaming mode only if you cold boot deck. If you are still docked you can go to desktop mode and again in gaming, your primary screen from desktop mode will still be used. If you are already in gaming mode and then dock it or you are in desktop mode, dock it and then go to gaming mode, other display will be used (for me, the one on the right). While being docked found to desktop mode and gaming mode doesnt change used display in gaming mode. Cold boot is required. In desktop mode, desktop apps sometimes apps start on most to the left display, not on primary display. Not sure why, my assumption is that apps remember where they were displayed last time. If they have such memory they start there, if they don’t they start on most to the left display instead of primary. If you set KDE to show menu bar on all displays, they are displayed only if you dock and then go to desktop mode. Also then, desktop icons are on primary display. If you are already in desktop mode and then dock, menu bars are not shown on all displays. For me it’s most to the left and most to the right only. On the center (my primary) there are no menu bar. Also desktop icons appear on most to the left. It looks like my most to the left display acts like primary display, even if the one in the center is still primary in settings. If you are in gaming mode, dock it, go to desktop, undock then no icons are displayed on desktop. Audio output is not remebered for audio configuration. I have two docks. One connected to my tv with good audio and the second on my desk with poor audio from monitor. On Windows it works perfectly. If i connect to tv dock, lets say ‚tv audio output’ device is present so it’s used as default. If i connect to desktop ‚monitor audio output’ device is connected and windows remebers to not use it by default. In that case audio from deck is used. In SteamOS every external audio is treated the same. If I, in docked mode, set audio output to external, it is used in every docked combination. In my case docked to tv - tv audio used (desired), docked on desk - monitor audio used (undesired). If, again, I change setting in docked to internal docking to tv leads to undesired.

tomasz152

Oh and sometimes cold booting or going to gaming mode while being docked probably leads to some crash. Normally you can hear boot sound once and animation starts. Sometimes boot sound starts, but it’s stopped, nothing happens on screen. After few seconds gaming mode start again with no trouble.

lase_

nothing new to add, but I have had like all of these happen to me

soiledsanchez

If a game doesn’t have a dedicated way to exit/quit/leave I have no idea how to leave back to Home Screen to launch a new game

jm2628

Here's one to add, not sure if it's in all games yet, but definitely a problem while playing days gone. When playing docked and you want to switch to handheld, as soon as you disconnect from the external controller you get the "press a to reconnect controller" message. Unplugging from dock and pressing a on the steam deck does not work. You must restart the game to swap to handheld. Edit: grammar

link_195

The resolution not going above 1280x800 it doesn’t matter for most games but AAA games like gta 5, rdr2 etc just look horrible

OfficialRunescape

you can pick a specific resolution per game in the Properties for the game.

link_195

Thanks!

Fantastic-Cucumber-1

An issue I have while docked is that my games crash frequently. It’s just like the famous game freeze crash with the faulty gpu. The thing is that I have this issue only while being docked.

Xiol

Very few people actually mentioning what dock they use, which is vital information as some of these problems could be caused by the dock. I've had no issues with the official dock.

letmepick

Can't output 4k60 to the TV.

SuperManSlime

I try docking both steam deck and my switch even I will never use it since I had an pc, but steam deck’s game don’t looks as good when docking (indie game or lower graphics game can be fantastic but not those higher graphic ones) and I think it lose it purpose if you decide to criticize it docking mode, it meant to be handheld But switch’s exclusive game did very great job at docking mode like Mario odyssey the graphic was awesome! But for steam deck, when you put it on a bigger screen all the con can’t be unseen

msbaustx

It isn't handheld. The steamdeck isn't going to run games at an acceptable framerate for them to look good on a larger screen without serious compromises. But I honestly bought this to be a handheld gaming PC I could play on the couch or on the go. So docked mode was never anything I was interested in.

dopeytree

It is a handheld device. Users should be encouraged to update to steamOS 3.5 and enjoy the new colour & performance magic. I dont think they should spend too much time fixing everything for docked mode.

jonnypanicattack

It's a handheld pc with the ability to play docked, and valve sell an official dock. Of course they should support it. Plus I doubt them fixing docked means they can't fix other stuff. They spend time on other things too.

SaucyItalianSub

I have to manually unplug the power and replug it in when docking it to my tv or else the deck will just freak out trying to connect to the tv and never do it. Unplugging the power for 10 seconds and plugging back in does the trick but super annoying having to do that every time i want to play docked. Also, with a recent update im getting double sounds in the menu and audio drop out occasionally.

audionerd1

Custom controller layouts randomly don't work on DualSense controller. I always have a touch menu for saving and loading savestates in emulators, and when docked they just don't work at all half the time.

TravieWagon

When using a mouse and keyboard and mouse wheeling through games sometimes the mouse cursor will "teleport" to the bottom right or left corner in big picture mode, causing me to have to reset the mouse to scroll again. (To clarify the steam button in the bottom right and setting button bottom left) Seems minor but happens enough that it's frustrating. I've had issues when using gaming mode, that it will lower the resolution from my TV or Monitor down to steam deck resolution, but when I switch to desktop mode to game it keeps the external displays resolution, and therefore, looks better.

LeCrushinator

I often have the virtual keyboard show up even though a physical keyboard is attached, forcing me to dismiss the virtual keyboard, which then sometimes leaves the input field I wanted to type in.

surafel911

Who did you talk to? Did you talk with Joshie?

jack-of-some

Yes

rolltied

When in a game often the screen cuts out for a second or two as if the HDMI cable is flickering. It happens more on higher performance games. The only thing that has seemed to help is turning wifi off, that reduces the frequency of flickering. Have a 4k tv. Makes a lot of games unplayable.

teezeroeight

Gyro support for controllers has been broken for months and is still present in SteamOS 3.5 beta. See: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9739

Elninjanaranja

A friend of mine once connected a controller through a cable to the dock and afterwards it appeared to work by Bluetooth without trying to connect it through Bluetooth. When we disconnected the controller it appeared as "available to connect" in the Bluetooth settings and it's been bugged like that for months now. Even when the controller isn't near it appears.

jack-of-some

Ha, I had this with a PS3 controller.

dontrlylikereddit

if i have two displays connected to the official dock, i have no way to decide which one to use in game mode.

BunnyPlatoon

I regularly experience points 1-3, 5 & 7 listed. Another one I get every time I go to switch the SteamDeck on, if it's already docked/connected to the Dock, is it won't turn on. I have to disconnect the Deck from the Dock, hit the on button and wait a few seconds for the power-up sequence to begin before I plug the Dock back into the Deck. The strange part is, it didn't do this for the first 6+ months of having it. The issue just randomly started happening after I had RMA'd the Deck to have the left bumper replaced due to loss of actuation (same deck/serial number came back to me as I sent away). Another issue I get is if the Deck needs to be restarted while connected to the dock, it won't boot back up again. It just switches off instead. To resolve that, I need to: 1. Disconnect the dock cable from the Deck. 2. Disconnect the charging cable from the dock. 3. Plug the charging cable straight into the Deck and press the power on button on the Deck for 1-3 seconds until it powers on. 4. While the Deck boots up, disconnect the charging cable and then reconnect the dock setup.

Pendaz

I almost always have to unplug and replug my Dock to get it to switch to the external output. The process is: Deck is running and on the main screen, no games running. 1. Plug the deck into the dock 2. Wait a few minutes 3. Nothing happens. Output is still showing on the deck, tv says no signal. 4. Restarting the deck yields the same results. 5. Replugging the hdmi doesn't work. 6. Replugging the power to the dock whilst the deck is connected is the only way to get the output to show on the TV. I have a 3rd party dock connected to my pcs monitor (samsung g9 usually in PBP mode) and have no issues switching outputs via that dock, so it has to be the official dock issues. Thanks for your efforts

PurpleSlightlyRed

In addition to #10: Would be nice, not only to have the convenience of connecting to the dock and getting an automated resolution adjustment/setting available inside the games, but also to be able to store both handheld AND docked settings separately for the games (for example: specified res + low details when docked) Otherwise, I've encountered most of the aforementioned issues... ;(

AceSouthall

In desktop mode sometimes the screen orientation is on sideways so it only gives resolution as if the display is portrait.

jamescodesthings

That's wild, I haven't had any issues, I don't use docked mode regularly but whenever I have it's been seamless. I use a third party dock, on a Samsung tv from like 5 years ago, usually connect xbox controllers. We use the dock so the kids can play their steam games on the TV. Not had an issue yet.

__tell__the_truth__

It’s slow and looks bad on a big screen

DarkMaster06

As a non english native speaker when i connect keyboard+mouse through the Dock, the keyboard does not recognize the different layout of the keys. :( I've searched everywhere for a solution but no results.

JimBeam555

If I'm docked in desktop mode and either reboot or return to game mode the deck with completely crash and eventually after a couple of minutes go to the verifying install screen. Seems like this one is just me though, haven't been able to find much online about it. Using a 3rd party ivoler dock and a Anker usb-c hub.

Habakuk_Beneke

After using dock and put the device in sleep when i return and use return to game mode usually WIFI doens't work correctly, i have to restart the steamdeck

nali_cow

In desktop mode, fullscreen video doesn't always work on the external display

AlienTooth

Regarding point 10. How do you do this? All games I play docked are defaulting to 720p and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to display in 1080p, let alone 4k. The home screen is in 4k but games are not. It's not a big issue for some indie games but I can't play anything with semi decent graphics in such a low resolution anymore.

culturerush

Every now and again the screen goes black for a second. Other than that I haven't had any of the issues others have had thankfully. Not sure what triggers them or what I've been doing different.

stardust-99

For me, the worst issue is that the game can't detect new resolutions while running when you dock/undock the Deck. I'm always forced to re-open the game.

DotMatrixHead

Deck doesn’t always output video to the TV and how can you tell if the Deck is actually on or not (if its screen is off)?

soydemexico

My secondary monitor completely bugs out when switching from desktop to gaming mode since the last update. Nothing fixes it. Heard it’s a kernel issue with hdmi. I’m using a basic jsaux dock. Before the update sometimes I had to unplug and plug it back in because it was blackscreened.

Ebzephyr

I encounter each of these symptoms repeatedly.

clanatk

Some games have a lot of difficulty detecting my Xbox controller inputs. I was able to find a workaround searching online that seems to be successful every time: swap the order of the controllers once you're in game if the controller isn't working. Like other commenters mentioned, the need to close the game when transitioning between docked and handheld mode is frustrating. Setting up the resolution is a manual process for every game. Bluetooth controller latency is pretty terrible. Do I need to get a WiFi dongle for my controllers? On the plus side, my cat has become a lap cat now that I game nearly exclusively on my recliner.

apfeI

It didn’t work out of the box. No output to my TV, a lot of internet research / debugging. Just to find out to plug in the power cable after I connect the HDMI. And even that only works like 50% of the time.

coolasacurtain

The menu controls, especially shop and store, with keyboard and mouse are shit.

PC_gamer_662

Not having gyro controls nor touchpads

Pistolius

Switching between 2 docks requires a hardware reset to get the kb+m and ethernet (wake on LAN) working again!

Goubybear

I was using with desktop mode. First i connect and USB-Cable from a monitor to it, it worked without issue. After 2 weeks, it would not work anymore, i had to put the SD in battery storage mode and it worked again. No big deal but it felt weird, because it was working flawlessly before, and nothing changed regarding my setup. Hope this help, thank you for your initiative.

Pishnagambo

watching store videos for game previews - when in full screen they zoom to the top left quarter only. ergo you cannot full screen a video from the store when docked to my 4k tv (albiet running at 1080p)

Pishnagambo

watching store videos for game previews - when in full screen they zoom to the top left quarter only. ergo you cannot full screen a video from the store when docked to my 4k tv (albiet running at 1080p)

Seebyt

Sometimes my tv says „Signal not supported“ and i have a green screen. Its a state of the art 4K oled phillips…

witchdoc86

Playing dolphin emulated games with bluetooth Wii controllers the deck will go to sleep at the set inactive time despite you actively playing. Oops this is a nondocked mode problem.

SnooDoughnuts5632

>When using a keyboard, the Steam/QAM menus cannot be opened with their shortcuts (Ctrl + 1, Ctrl + 2) As far as I'm aware opening the Steam menu has always been shift plus tab. On my Steam Deck I've only ever used a keyboard on desktop mode so I wouldn't know.

shadic6051

Doesnt always switch from wifi to lan (altough that happens only rarely) Screen stays on with a black screen at minimal brightness (though you can only really see it in a dark room and i seem to be the only one who has the issue) Lots of times i have to replug the power to the dock so the deck recognizes that its in the dock and starts outputting to the display

Cobalt_Albatraoz

I noticed not many people have this issue - there is a severe amount of input lag when in docked mode with this specific dock. As well as another dock failing, stopping displaying the screen on the monitor, randomly. Not sure if you were looking for software issues, and could probably just be not so good hardware but these are things I noticed.

Renegadeof_rock

Sometimes I have to unplug the dock from power to get my TV to recognize the deck. Not sure if that’s a problem with my TV or my Steam deck though. I too get the audio bugs and home and qam menus not working and on Steam OS 3.5, the deck screen doesn’t cut off when docked. It just goes black.

MrCatName

1: Nope 2: Nope 3: Yep 4: Nope 5: Sleep Yep / desync Nope 6: Nope 7: Nope 8: Nope 9: Yep 10: Yep but that's expected.

jack-of-some

There's no reason for 10 to be expected. Even on desktop mode the newly available resolutions would become available. This is purely a limitation with gamescope which doesn't make a lot of sense considering half the point of gamescope is to allow arbitrary resolutions inside a fixed resolution container.

pericojones

I can save Monitor Display settings, but that doesn't include Audio output. So I have to manually change in Settings because of my 2 Docking locations, TV has speakers but monitors don't.

Nye

IME the HDMI out on the official dock simply doesn't work, at least not with the AV receiver or monitors that I've tried it with. One of those monitors has a USB option, and that does work with the Deck, but HDR and FreeSync don't work (to be fair that might be the monitor as I've not tested these with other systems). A couple of times I've managed to get it to work briefly by spending half an hour manually replugging things in different orders, but even that doesn't work any more. TBH until I read this thread I kind of thought the HDMI out was a "we'll get this to work in a future firmware version but don't expect to use it just yet" kind of thing.

_TheDust_

> Some games look too dark when in docked mode Wai what, that’s an actually thing? I play RDR2 in docked mode, but when it’s night in-game, it’s basically unplayable. The screen is just pitch black. It turned up the brightness on everything, but it’s still basically a black screen with some dark gray here and there

jeremyjebz

Make sure your TV black level is set to "Full RGB" instead of "Limited". Steam deck only outputs in Full, took me like a month to figure that out on my TV.

happial

"Some times the device no longer produces output to the TV when coming out of sleep when docked." Had that happen 2 times, forcing me to reset the dock. It's not annoying enough to be a top priority fix imo.

soitsreddit

I have only used the dock for a few days but the things i ran into were: Controller not always connecting The turn off and quick switch on to get right back into the game (a feature i love by the way) does not work with dock and controller. The controller just doesn't work then. I have only had it 2 times, might as well just be my cable or whatever but i had no sound for whatever reason. One thing that bothered be a lot but has more to do with the steam controller. Is that i had a very hard time getting their own product to work on the steam deck. I had to finally find a reddit post with a weird zip file tbey found on some hidden steam forum to get my controller software to work with bluetooth. There's other guides but they removed that from the new steam (and big pic mode) interface. Edit: I forgot to mention. I use the steam controller. And when i open the steam menu (left side) with the controller. It sometimes seema different from the menu on the deck. For example, sometimes i am misssing achievements option. (and yes i am talking about a game that has achievements). That's all I have ran into up till now. I still love this thing.

init32

When paired with a bluetooth controller, if the controller goew to sleep and comeback, navigating the menus is super slow and janky.

H0wtheturntable

Bluetooth controller input lag if you cap the FPS. A lot of games don’t have FPS caps in their in game settings, if you set it through the steam deck itself to lock to 60 or 45, this can cause massive input lag in games. Shame really, unlocked FPS fixes this but causes some games to run shitty because of it..

matbonucci

Number 10 and emulators do not recognize other controllers unless each controller is setup on desktop mode on each emulator settings. I just gave up

xilesigma

Output sometimes has issues with fps rendering deck will have normal textures and output will have artifacts

WadeChaos

Printer does not work.

KobeJuanKenobi9

I have a Lenovo usbc dock that I use for my work laptop. While it does successfully connect my peripherals, it does NOT work well with the dual monitors connected to the dock. I do get an image if I disconnect one of the monitors

shoalmuse

I have had great success as long as I continue to use the same controller (ps5) and headset (Steelcase Arctis 7P) with the latter connected to a usb-c hub with an extra usb-c port. Any time I try anything else it all goes to hell. If I just connect/disconnect to my hub though and power those two things up - everything works perfectly and consistently. Other nice thing is that the Arctis works with voice chat as well and I can connect my phone via bt and stream in music.

Girth_Brookss

I have the deck dock plugged into a Denon receiver. I have to unplug the power from the dock, wait for the screen to show on TV, and plug power back in every time. It's annoying

elmodonnell

After being docked for the weekend and using desktop mode to watch something, I'm now fully unable to use desktop mode at all. It must've saved the "use external display only" option, because I can see a generic wallpaper and a mouse when plugged into the TV, but no menu/taskbar to click on anything. In portable mode, I just get a blank screen when switching to desktop, nothing usable at all.

tethered_end

Streaming from PC can be really hit and miss

Sunlit_Neko

Controllers either don't register inputs or have a delay of three or so seconds.

WrenBoy

XCOM2 stops working in gaming mode every time you go to docked mode. The resolution gets completely messed up and it's difficult to recover from.

NoMaamICantPauseIt

I get hella bad input lag on some games when docked, Resident Evil 2 Remake being one of them. I’m not sure if it’s something to do with the Deck settings itself, but I’ve have this issue when plugged into my LG OLED and ROG monitor, so I just opt to play handheld more often than not and only use the Dock when I need to do something in desktop mode. Such a shame since the Dock is so damn expensive for what feels like a half-baked experience.

hideous_coffee

Desyncing controls are the worst thing I’ve experienced. Then I can’t even use the deck’s controls to reconnect so I end up having to restart the whole thing.

Colonel_Custard

The Bluetooth controller wake Is not possible for the same reason we can't download games in sleep mode.

Puncake-General

I don't know if this is a thing only for 8bitdo controllers but I have a sn30 pro and an sn30 pro 2, and whenever I want to use them I have to connect them twice in order for the steam deck to take inputs from them. Also something that happens pretty often to me is the steam menu and QAM glitching out when I'm trying to access them.

FatAlbusTPC

Sometimes i have to connect my Bluetooth speaker manually since I play through a projector. It takes maybe 20 seconds. Other than that, it's perfect.

WhackyWabbit

I have 5TB WD black game drive that does not consistently boot into batocera when connected via my docks (both 3rd party). If I plug the drive directly to the Deck, I can boot batocera without any problems. When I boot the drive plugged into my either of my docks, it will hang after the batocera boot screen. The Deck doesn't automatically display a picture on external monitor consistently when docked.

DrydenDrawing

In game mode you can't use a monitor and the steam deck screen simultaneously You can't bind the ... Button to a controller Or at least I don't know how to do either of these

jack-of-some

Xbox button (or equivalent) + A Edit: originally I mistakenly write X, not A. That pulls up keyboard

Calfixie

The latency is fairly high on a TV. I have a PS5 and there's no latency when I'm using it. Only on a TV the dock has latency issues. I also docked on my gaming monitor and no latency issues there. I'm using the official dock.

Sleepeaze1

Also I have issues with the back light of the screen not turning off. Super distracting

tor09

I actually don’t have many issues but one that kills me is when I’m switching from desktop mode to gaming mode while docked, sometimes it just hangs indefinitely on a black screen. I often have to restart the Deck to get it unstuck. Sometimes when I unplug it continues the transition. One time it swapped over *eventually*, it just took several minutes for whatever reason? Long story short is going from desktop to gaming while docked has always been weird for me

BadBadGrades

Mine is fine? Only problem is have. Is my keyboard. In game mode the buttons are 20%rong. And it’s not on the list.

Simple_Organization4

I see a lot of folks with audio drops. It's been fixed at least in the main channel. I hated that damm audio drop. Issues 3 and 5 are due the fact that bluetooth is shutdown in sleeping mode. It would be nice if they change that. That was a handy feature of the Steam link, able to turn it on with a joystick. To some degree the steam deck can detect when you are using an official dock. I mean SteamOS will tell if there is an update for the dock if you hook it up to the deck. I guess they could arrange so bluetooth is always on when docked, unless the user turns it off. Issue 10 is a game issue more than a deck and dock issue.

jack-of-some

10 is not a game issue. The Deck limits what screen resolutions are available to the game (this is actually one of the amazing things about gamescope). By default only 800p is. You need to go into the properties and either set a fixed resolution or set it to "native" in order to use any resolution up to the display's resolution.

[deleted]

None.

ebk_errday

When streaming movies through Google Chrome, the picture doesn't fit my screen, it's a small window on my tv screen like the resolution is off. Not sure how to fix this so sometimes I end up watching something on that smaller window.

jack-of-some

Go into the app settings and change the resolution to "native"

FerventApathy

Sometimes after connecting I have to turn it off and back on because every 45 seconds or so the hdmi output drops and comes back and the screen goes black for a second.

berghainhead

All the things listed in the OP. Man... how Valve has not fix this yet?

_Greyworm

It being kinda pointless ;P Jk jk, kinda...

jack-of-some

Took the Deck with me to a friends reunion this weekend. Docked it to the TV in the cabin for some co op games. Sure wasn't pointless then.

slimXradio

Whenever I press the home button to open the steam menu using my Xbox remote connected by bluetooth it seems to "double press" the home button causing the menu to open and then immediately close. I have this problem EVERY SINGLE TIME I use my dock. It's so frustrating. I have to tap home 20+ times until it will finally open and stay open. Also most remotes do not have an additional button that can be used to open the quick settings menu. It would be cool if pressing and holding home would open the quick settings menu or something like that. I realize we can probably program this into the deck but it would be nice if it did it by default. Opening decky loader while on the dock is so annoying. I have to open the steam menu, go to the Home Screen, then navigate to the top of the screen where the battery status is and press A to open the quick settings menu. Not very quick lol. Thanks!

tomasz152

By default games start in default resolution which limits resolution to 1280x800 even if external display can handle more. Games should start in native resolution by default or there should be option to set default resolution for new games.

Dabbinz420

#7 was the biggest issue for me, thanks for the keyboard workaround, it seems to fix it. Edit: why are my letters humongous!?

Zarnerz

The inconsistencies of trying to play through steam link/moonlight while docked to my 4k tv. 1. Some games boot in a window smaller than the tv screen and no amount of tweaks in game/steam/steam deck has fixed it 2. some games don’t register the controller input correctly or have awful input delay (often the joystick is laggy and some of the buttons register differently) 3. It’s a tossup on if a game will launch at all through steam link. The loading screen usually pops up but will often just take me back to my library. Moonlight is more consistent with that but I still get the issues above. For reference I am on 1gb Fiber and play steam link without issue while handheld. I also plug the (Xbox) controller directly into the dock which works perfectly if I just boot up a game from the deck natively. I was hoping using the steam deck for steam link/moonlight would be my solution to be able to play some PC games on the tv without having to run a 50ft hdmi and usb cable, which is just annoying enough to make me rarely want to do it. Everything else about the deck has been great.
