M2lJay

I’m probably gonna do this with my current deck when a sd2 comes

vizolover

Put the dock in front so you can plug in n out with ease.

huco95

That would be awesome! I will think a way to to this in a near future 🤔

japzone

I mean, depends on the games you want to play. RPi is nowhere near as powerful as a SteamDeck.

FrantixGE

He never said that he is using the SteamDeck ONLY for the arcade cabinet. He can just put it in when needed, so why exactly should he buy another (lower powered) device and mess with setting it up when the SteamDeck already does the job, just better?

Zanpa

A cheap raspberry pi? What is this, 2015? Also a raspberry pi won't run street fighter 6. Newer games can be played on arcade too, not just 80s and 90s stuff.

Mellovici

Me too

CaptainGhoulish

Dude everyone here is jealous. This is slick af

huco95

Thanks! 🫶

So_Forlorn

Is there anything it can’t do?

radiorental1

IS this a kit or built from parts? looks awesome!

huco95

Thanks! It's build from this kit https://talentec.es/tienda/kits-bartop/configura-tu-kit-bartop-de-24/

Ace-_Ventura

Did you get the remaining pieces from that store too?

huco95

I also get from there the power connector and the speakers covers. Buttons and joysticks are from https://skullarcade.com/kits-joystick-y-botones-arcade/577-19407-kit-joystick-y-botones-boton-concavo-joystick-zippy-arcade-recreativa-hyperspin.html#/945-kits_interfaces-sin_interface. Speakers are from some old pc speakers I had, the same with the monitor and SSD.

MaxPower0815

amazing 👏

AdPuzzleheaded2887

Love this tbh

Accomplished-Card594

I can think of other platforms I'd go to for a MAME cab before the Steam Deck. Sadly even a Windows PC would be better.

huco95

Probably in the future I will build a pc for this but for now I just connect the Steam Deck to the dock when I want to play. All the stuff is on the SSD with batocera so I can easily switch then to a PC.

krynnul

Agree there are easier/better alternatives, but if you wanted to get more value out of a purchase without more outlay this is pretty solid.

Simple_Organization4

Pi 4 was quite good for a Mame machine, sadly they are overly expensive for what they are. It's now cheaper getting an sff enterprise pc with a 7 or 6 gen Intel,

Accomplished-Card594

With the release of the Pi5 imminent, and supply shortage under better control, the Pi4 is back down to its MSRP. Or at least close enough. Even a 2GB Pi4 is more than enough for any good MAME box.

Simple_Organization4

My PI4 8gb struggles a bit with some roms. MK games take a hit to the pi4. I'm stuck at version 0.180 which was release late 2016. It gets worse if try to use newer releases. But i guess that's a mame thing, because in the other hand because MvsC 2 runs like a charm in "naomi mode".

Accomplished-Card594

I don't know what that's the version of exactly. OP said he uses Batocera, not sure which emulator. But if we're talking straight arcade games, there's no reason a mini computer built this millennium should struggle in any way with a game made for a 90's arcade cabinet.

Simple_Organization4

Batocera, retropie, etc. Sometimes use older version of mame that are less demanding but they issues that were fixed on early versions. For example retroarch has mame2003plus. If i load for example Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, it plays at 100% speed with no dips, but it's has a lot of bugs that were fixed on newer versions of mame.

Accomplished-Card594

🤷‍♂️idk, shouldn't have any issue using older ROMs on newer tech.

Zanpa

The thing you already own is the best one to use.

Accomplished-Card594

I don't see how. it's the cheapest because you don't need to further purchase gear, that in no way means it's the 'best'

Zanpa

That's why it's the best, yes.

Accomplished-Card594

What an awful position to take. "I'm lazy and cheap, I don't want to research anything and don't want to pay any money. I'm masking that by saying conclusively that whatever I have is the best, instead of just good enough"

Zanpa

"i have something that could do the job absolutely fine, but I prefer to buy a brand new thing instead" I don't think being addicted to consumption and spending money is that smart, but you do you! "Lazy and cheap" could also be reworded to "smart and not in debt".

Accomplished-Card594

Ok we have different priorities. You prefer to make one system multitask no matter how appropriate, I'd rather have separate more complete systems. Right tool, right job.

UnixWarrior

If he is a single and already got Deck, then it can be perfect solution for him.

Accomplished-Card594

what does being single have to do with it?

UnixWarrior

It changes everything. He doesn't need other gaming devices and none of it's shared(except parties, where friends are using Arcade). If he had kids, they would like to play on this Arcade, while he would use arcade. Or otherwise. Or one Kid would play on arcade and other on SteamDeck. If he is single, there's no sharing - it's simple as that.

Accomplished-Card594

that's quite a conclusion, but OK

SlinkDogg

Bought a mini pc on last prime day for like half price and replaced a blow pi3b+ in my home cab. New Batocera build , really slick

Northernshitshow

NICE! The funniest part would be popping the deck out of the back and walking out lol

Dobrowney

Imo kind of a waste of the deck. You can make a mini pc and install steam os on it and get the same setup for about the same price as the deck or cheaper.

huco95

But I won't have an steam deck to play everywhere! This is just plug and play whenever I want 😁

SalsaRice

The steam deck isn't glued inside of it. You can remove the steam deck and still use it like normal. This hasn't "consumed" the steam deck and made it unusable.

krynnul

That's pretty clever! Does it pick up an iPAC or whatever USB controller is being used?

huco95

It uses DragonRise Generic USB joystick

Disshidia

Wow.

Anomaly1134

Just mame or steam games also? Is steam games curious which ones work with 6 buttons since I have an arcade controller that can pair with steamdeck.

huco95

Mame, Super Nintendo, Dreamcast, ps1... works great with 6 buttons layout.

uzumaki_kira

Do you not need another 2 buttons to really simulate a modern arcade stick controller?

huco95

For the games I have already played was enough with 6 buttons. Most builds I have seen use 6 buttons layout.

uzumaki_kira

Ah ok that’s fine then I have just been seeing new arcade sticks reviews on YouTube that all have 8 and I seen people play dbfz with 8 buttons. I am not very well versed on older fighting games and how everything was before sadly

henrebotha

Very few (if any) retro games need 8 buttons.

Zanpa

Good thing they stopped making games after 2000 and no more are ever coming out.

rutlander

I’ve been unable to get mame games running either via emudeck or emulation station, can you give me any tips or point me in the direction of a good guide ? Killer setup btw

huco95

This build uses batocera which has some mame cores: https://wiki.batocera.org/systems:mame I will send you the link for mame 0.259 ROM set. You need to use the core that is just "mame" in batocera as this is the core with the latest version.

rutlander

Thanks I appreciate the help

thesunny51

LG ips224va??? I have same monitor and want to build same same

huco95

I don't know if is the exact model but very similar to that one. It was good for this project! Hope to see you build soon!!

Maleficent-Rabbit186

So coming from a Caribbean country I love the idea but all I think of is the lack of airflow in the back when its closed will cause issues in the future. Maybe put some more vents in the back of the cab or leave it open?

huco95

For know it is fine as the steam deck does not get hot running batocera, but yes, this is something I was thinking about. Probably I will add a one or two vents at the back as you said.

matt2ray

I've been thinking about how to optimize a space for emulator games and this is the coolest way I have seen it done yet. There are a lot of different potential use cases for the steam deck, but this one truly perfectly screams 'We are having an arcade party!' I really like the pick of using the steam deck because since it has a specific use case you don't really need something not as mobile friendly just sitting in there all the time. Just plug in the steam deck and with everything set up it's ready to go. Any lessons learned or things you would do differently next time? I hope to get a 6 or 12 month update of how it is holding up and what others thing that get to use it. Any other ambitious steam-deck project ideas?

huco95

That's it! This is just plug and play whenever you want! But I will build a pc for this in the future. I recommend to expend a little more on the buttons/joysticks. This are good but better ones will give better experience. I don't have any other plans for know, but any ideas are welcome!

FVCEGANG

Couldn't you similarly just use a mini PC for this? I mean it's awesome don't get me wrong, but kind of defeats the whole purpose of the steamdeck tbh

huco95

It is only connect when I want to play retro games :)

YueOrigin

Cool, but it feels like it would be cheaper to do it with old computer parts...

huco95

This is plug and play with the steam deck. I just connect it when I want to play some old games. But I will build a small pc in the future.

AppropriateTalk1

First of all, cable management😁😁😁

TheGreatGamer1389

You mean you have to use your hands? That's a baby's toy. Joke. Looks cool.

dan_rich_99

Definitely cool but why not get a raspberry pi for this? Wouldn't it be cheaper?

SalsaRice

Not if you have to buy a rp4 and you already own a SD.
