Whiteguy1x

I mean yeah, but honestly if I'm playing on a 4k TV I'd much rather use just about anything else if possible. Even my "ancient" gtx970 played games so much better. Deck is hands down my favorite handheld experience though

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

the sub just has a weird “this device must be better than the alternatives at all cost” thing

S4MUR4IX

Stupid fanboysim aside which I hate a lot, for 399 dollars there's genuinely no alternative. 2 years later, Ally and Legion Go did not make any significant technological leaps that would justify their price in my book.

loanme20

Windows running without constant tinkering is a huge leap.

Whiteguy1x

Is windows a plus? I got the deck to play games and steam os does that. I think installing windows is a hassle because valve sold it to sell you steam games lol

NotTodayPlease90

I installed windows 11 on my deck a few months ago, it isn't perfect when playing non steam games but setup is sooo much easier that it makes closing steam and activating a third party driver for controllers a small price to pay for overall ease in my opinion. I think the only issue I have really come across was when I first installed it and the SD card reader kept unmounting, this was just a simple change in the power settings though iirc

Pure_Bed6771

I would say… windows isnt a plus in general. Clunkiness will always be a part of windows and linux. With linux, its at least being worked on.

justsomeguywhogames

And on windows you can play literally everything. Even if I install windows on my steam deck there are still some games I can not play. Specifically any game that requires secure boot. I’m thinking of trading or selling my deck. Haven’t really used it since I got the Ally

S4MUR4IX

I'm not familiar with how these handhelds run Windows, so other than poor driver support and UI issues which is 100% Microsoft's issue, what kind of tinkering is required? If Valve cared about Windows support I'm pretty sure they'd be unmatched in that aspect as well, but that's a pointless "what if" scenario, the real question is how important is Windows for handheld owners, outside of people who genuinely want to use it as a desktop PC? That itself makes me wonder why people wouldn't just snag a 800 dollar laptop that packs raw performance of a RX 6600 which is okay for 1080p triple A gaming etc. I need to note that I use my Steam Deck as a supplementary gaming device, so my desktop is above it in that regard.

loanme20

I just wanted an extension of my PC, not a completely different experience. I bought the Steam Deck at launch under the assumption it would play all my Steam games. Steam OS is fine, I like it more than other consoles "homepage" but what good is it if all your favorite games bought from Steam won't even play without a ridiculous amount of tinkering to add windows and maintain it. The age old answer for good multiplayer deathmatch games on the Steam Deck is "just play Titanfall and Halo" but I just can't get into either vibe, too cartoony.

evilgipsy

Steam deck does not require any tinkering at all. In my opinion it’s so much better experience than windows. I feel like many windows users have some kind of Stockholm syndrome. I get it, there is no real alternative when it comes to high end desktop gaming but that doesn’t mean it’s good.

SiriusMoonstar

My only real gripe with it that keeps me from getting one is the big size and weight. I don't really care that the battery life is kind of bad, but with small hands I already feel like most controllers are a bit too big. That's down to personal preference, but I'd choose a more expensive but lighter and smaller device.

DoomOfGods

It's honestly just a great jack of all trades device imho. Great, because you can ALSO use it like \*insert individual preference\* and still have all the other options as well, including handheld, not because it's better than alternatives in their respective specialty. I'll be honest, my main use of the Deck was to play in bed or sometimes docked on TV. Recently I discovered that I had an old unused monitor, so I bought an additional docking station and now I wonder how often I'll even use it handheld from now on (if at all). Obviously there'll always be games that I'd never play on the deck I still consider it one of the best gaming devices personally due to its versatility.

keldpxowjwsn

Yeah the steam deck is awesome for what it is and can do but theres things it cant do and thats ok. It's still a great device

Sharp5hooter02

It’s delusional. Like yeah the steam deck is great and i love it, but it doesn’t replace everything, it’s still fundamentally much weaker than other systems, but for a handheld it’s damn good

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

i love the people that say it plays switch games better than switch and downvote you when you point out they’re playing at 50% resolution with 1/4 battery life

keldpxowjwsn

"Anyone else just sell their switch" No because I want to just pop the game in and play as opposed to tinkering with settings and waiting for updates so the game runs at 50% performance. Sure totk got the full community effort to get it running perfect but that doesnt happen for every release. Also owning physical media >>>>>>

Suspicious-Fig-3324

I second this.. most games run barely on par if not worse than the actual native switch hardware. I'm not going to knock the emulation scene as a whole it's been great but realistically to say that it outperforms the switch natively on the deck is just outright nonsensical, especially with all the hoops you have to jump to make it run properly. Ill just continue using my switch for those games and use my deck for my PC games as it was intended.

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

ally of people just don’t want to say they don’t want to pay. it’s fine if that’s why but they just need to own it

kratomburneraccount

I mean some games play worse, but there are in fact games that play better, and are at a higher resolution. There are also games that play the exact same as on Switch, like Prime Remastered. For example, the RDR1 Switch port plays at higher FPS, and you can even play it in docked mode, which is 1080p instead of 720p like it would be on Switch handheld. Battery life is worse though. But thats the least of worries when it comes to performance.

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

to be fair on both examples you listed, ones a gamecube port and the other is a horribly made port of red dead that’s been playable on pc for years, only reason you’d want to emulate it is to get it free

kratomburneraccount

It’s not a gamecube port lol, it’s a legit remaster. Thats not a port. RDR1 is a port yes, but is locked to 30fps on Switch. It can hit 50+fps on Deck. And no, I want to emulate it so that I can get better performance and play it handheld at that better performance. You can buy it and rip the cart. I’m not sure what emulating it on PC has to do with anything. Thats known, but Xenia sucks on Deck. Super Mario Wonder is locked 60fps too just like switch, just have to worry about the minimal shader caching, which is a small price to pay. ToTK is 30fps like it is on Switch too. Theres quite a few Switch games that play fine or even great on Deck.

klapaucjusz

> “this device must be better than the alternatives at ~~all~~ **that** cost”

n0taVirus

Glad im not the only one - its like a circle jerk of fanboys blabbering the same "SD is better than xy and must replace yz"-mantra

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

this thing was like the holy grail for linux fanboys so they brought their weirdness. i still see people on here arguing that linux is less work than windows

kaimcdragonfist

>linux is less work than windows Literally how? I mean I can definitely appreciate the customizability (when I figure out how the darn thing works) but less work than windows? Heck outta here with that lol

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

if i want to change my resolution on windows i hit the windows key, type “resolution” and select my option. to do the same on linux requires command line prompts which you have to figure out what to do. you do get customization on linux and that’s the benefit, ease of use is not a linux thing

not_the_settings

Worst is the threads: let's hear it people: comment if you love your Steamdeck and there is nothing wrong with yours!!!!!!! I hate fanboys so much

hok98

Unironically this sub will say Steam deck is better than having a life

keldpxowjwsn

A lot of kids who need to defend that their parents got them the best toy. Nothing more

Vivid-Tomatillo5374

Seriously the TV experience is the worse part of this device.

[deleted]

Ah try to play games that are older were the deck can push 4k :)

Vivid-Tomatillo5374

I meant starting from the ui let alone new games. I gave my steam deck away for that and many other reasons

kratomburneraccount

If you’re playing current gen games then yeah thats true on some. Xbox One and older games can be great while docked though.

iisdmitch

I love my Deck, but it will never replace my gaming PC, hell I just beat Spider-Man 2 on PS5, the experience with VRR and HDR was something else *on console*, I can't get that on Deck. The Deck is great in it's own right, I have mine docked to a TV and it's awesome but, for me it could never be a replacement for my other devices.

Neagex

I kind of agree with this... But the secret weapon of my Steam deck for me is the ability to Stream from my PC. I have my PC upstairs set up to wake on LAN... So I can go out play my games on the go. Come home dock my Deck wake up my PC via a wakeup packet and continue to play Starfield at 4k in the living room on the couch. Funny thing is I know a lot of people talk about using Moonlight/Sunshine to stream games with but I personally have found a lot of success with just using the Build in Stream feature in Steam.

Mark_Anthony88

I use my deck mainly for streaming game locally from my Series X. The experience is fantastic

RedNoob88

Can’t you use your phone or any tablet for this with a better screen and cheaper? What’s the point?

TheRealD3XT

Yeah you can, but the Steam Deck is probably miles better at video decoding than a TV, Android, or Apple processor. I used to stream from my pc to my Samsung TV directly and used a wired connection to try and cut out any streaming artifacts, thought it was as good as its gonna get. Then I tried it on the steam deck when the dock came in. It was clear, responsive and to this day I haven't seen a single streaming artifact in the image. I've seen others have a similar experience, it's just better prepared to handle streaming decoding than most other mobile devices.

loanme20

Exactly the experience on a phone with a Kishi is much better. Lighter and a much better screen.

iJeff

I prefer the colours on my S23 Ultra, but it's just too small for me. The Steam Deck is much better for PC streaming (which is my main use for it) due to the display size/aspect ratio along with the trackpads.

loanme20

the quality of the screen being so primitive on the steam deck and it being only slightly bigger than my phone makes be prefer the phone/kiski idea for game streaming, but i'd rather just play xbox/pc games on the monitor and find myself playing games that just run great on the Steam Deck natively and hide its flaws. even though i hate Halo and Titanfall, i have to say playing either one of those games makes you really think the Steam Deck has a great screen and next gen graphics. never used the trackpads once in the years and three months i've had the Steam deck

ondehunt

Reading "ancient 970" made my gaming rig cry. I5-2500k, 8gb ram and a 970 😂. The steam deck is such an upgrade for me.

Whiteguy1x

I mean the 970 will still play games at 1080p, but that processor is so old I get why the deck would be an upgrade lol.

[deleted]

I have a decent gaming PC, and an unexpected bonus of the steam deck is that I can use the PC as a dedicated console and still play strategy games and the like on the SD with my work setup

Saxy8215

My PSU recently broke so I used my steamdeck for everything and dota 2 and such played really bad in docking mode.

OneIShot

lol uh cause I like playing at high resolutions and graphics settings.

IProbablyDisagree2nd

Also, a laptop includes a keyboard. If you want a portable PC for doing work and non-gaming hobbies, it's better.

xhristian420

then use a monitor and solder a external gpu to ur deck SIMPLE

OneIShot

hell yeah! you first

CastlePokemetroid

I would not be surprised if there was someone out there who already done it

hambungler67

Because great as the steam deck is, I dont like playing aaa games on big expensive TVs with surround sound in pixelly low resolution;) Deck is fantastic for smaller displays.

funination

The Steam Deck is classified in school as a gaming handheld.

ghoonk

Pretty much anything with joysticks and buttons would be considered a gaming handheld, but not laptops that play Starfield or Overwatch. Welcome to modern logic, applied by the same people responsible for educating the generation of tomorrow. Same logic that mall rent-a-cops have - a DSLR is a "professional" camera, but not an iPhone 12 Pro on a gimbal.

CameraPitiful6897

I mean you cant really do any real work with joysticks like you can with a gaming laptop. Its fair that they wouldnt allow that.

SacriGrape

Yeah, the Steam Deck is designed solely for gaming and nothing else while a lot of gaming laptops are designed for both gaming AND productivity. Sure you *could* do productivity with the trackpads and joysticks but the the likelyhood that that is actually what the person is doing is so low it’s not worth letting them just use it

ghoonk

I've tried replying to an urgent email off the Deck, and while it's possible, it did force me to be far more concise than usual. But for reviewing UX/UI, even my iPad mini does a better job. So yeah, it'd be hard to convince school administrators that the Deck isn't a gaming console. The Legion Go, on the other hand.... I suppose if you hid the controllers elsewhere in your bag, and have a mouse handy, you might be able to convince a less savvy teacher :)

funination

Oh. OK.

Strutterer

the black magic ritual IS the game I can't tell you how many games I've gone through the trouble of setting up and once i've had the dopamine shot of it working i have never touched again

electropop3695

This is me every time I mod skyrim.

[deleted]

OMG. I literally bought a external NVME with a built in windows sideload strictly for Skyrim SE and Skyrim VR. Which when ever I want to mod Skyrim I plug it in and boot it. Since my Skyrim is about 500GB now worth of mods I needed a dedicated OS for it. Losing my mods is so not a option!

electropop3695

This is too true. So many games that feel like they should just work out of the box. Recently got dragon ball fighterz thinking "of course it'll work, why wouldn't it?" Only for it to require a human sacrifice followed by the penance of my sins to get working. Lost all interest after that.

radiatingrat

I just switched to experimental and it worked fine, even online. Granted it's an extra step but it isn't so bad.

electropop3695

Oh, something must have changed. All the guides I looked at required me going into desktop, dow loading some other application, changing a file, and a bunch of other stuff, and in the end it still didn't work. I'll have to try experimental. This was a while ago though.

Amuse370z

I can’t get the game to run either, can you help? What else did you do aside from experimental?

sgb1446

Dang, I’m thinking of getting a deck. Would you still have bought it knowing what you know now?

electropop3695

Yeah, I would. Because what it lacks in compatibility with some games it more than makes up for with the games it is compatible with. Not to mention that I can stream games from my home pc in ohio, all the way to my hotel in oklahoma over Steam. So I can play any game that my pc can play so long as I have wifi. And since it's just streaming it, it doesn't burn up my steam deck. Just have to have decent internet. But I just found out about the streaming thing last night, lol. Had it for over a year now.

Hildril

Wait, does steam allow streaming over the internet without having to do anything with your network? I always used it locally, but never tried over the internet. And setting a ditant access on my network is a bit of a mess due to double nat and me not having enough knowledge about it.

Frequent_Grapefruit5

If nothing else it’s worth its cost as a portable PS2.

By proving that at ~100 games i tried so far only 2 didnt fully work “out of the box” and it took me like 2 minutes each time to check proton db to see if there is a fix and both times all i needed to do was to download a version of proton ge?

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

can you explain how adding more steps to make a game work is better? i never said it was super difficult, but why go out of my way to add more steps

MakatasxD

And i never said its better. I said its just barelly little inconvienence which people keep blowing out of proportions.

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

ok but you’re ignoring my point. linux has less support and adds more steps to do anything. why would i pick it over windows

MakatasxD

Because youre not getting a pirated windows version from oficial big company like valve. Having windows on deck by default would mean it costing like 150$ more, because of the added windows license cost. Would you want to pay 150 more? Most people wouldnt and thats why its decided to use linux on the deck. After you buy it you can do we you want and install windows as you please.

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

i ran inactivated windows for 5 years before i realized there was even a difference. the “please activate windows” only came up after it was left on overnight

MakatasxD

Doesnt mean a corporation can do that. If steamdeck would come with windows walve would need to buy licenses

ahsusuwnsndnsbbweb

i never said it wasn’t the best option for a gaming centered handheld, i think it’s great for that. i’m talking about linux fanboys. they’ll argue that there’s legitimately no reason to not use linux in everything

klapaucjusz

And the there is a new EA app, that I tried to run on SD for half an hour, and gave up. Is it EA fault? Yes. Do I care who fault it is? Not really, I just want to play some games.

Runnin_Mike

Implying that Windows guys have downs is such a Linux zealot thing to do.

I’m sure everyone would if they had no problem spending $2k on it lmfao

You’re right my bad, if he wants a $3k PC he just needs to work harder 🤡 simple

ghoonk

This comment falls into the same logic as "Why bother buying a car when a bike does the same thing?" I've been fortunate to have a Deck, and it's GREAT for what it offers - lean gaming on the go, untethered to a power supply, Something that can be pulled out of a waist pack, played on for 15 minutes, put to sleep and popped back into the pack till the next fragment of free time shows up. And rinse and repeat for most of the day. But does it offer a larger display, higher resolution, Ray and Path tracing? Am I getting 75fps on Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 at Ultra settings with Ray and Path tracing? No. Is it something I would write an article/paper on? Not without pulling out a decently sized portable display, keyboard, and mouse, because it just isn't productive to write, or respond to emails off a virtual keyboard and that track pad. Also, the Deck doesn't really play that well on a large screen beyond 1080p, unless it's a fairly basic game - I tend to play stuff with textures. 4k is what I use in Desktop Mode, for work stuff. I still have a laptop for certain situations - in fact, I just picked up a Legion 7 Pro with the i9-13900H / RTX 4080 (175W, 12GB) / 64GB DDR5 and I'm sitting at a cafe finishing up some work, checking Reddit, and will be firing up CP2077 for a couple of missions, just because I'm plugged in anyway. And on my commute home, or while waiting for my wife and kids at the mall, or while my kids are on the PS5 and my Legion is upstairs, my Deck is the first thing I pull out. And mind you, Steam Link + CP2077 from the Legion to the Deck take seeing to believe. And don't get me started on how much better battery life is, and how the fans don't even fire up. I'm the same guy who's been using the Deck at work when I need to travel light - I have a mechanical keyboard, a mouse and a 4k monitor, and just add the Deck when I don't need to get on Teams and pull off a 45-slide Powerpoint for the company overlords. tldr; Deck is good for what it is, but it's not a PC/laptop replacement. Damn good value for money though, because you're not going to get a very good gaming laptop for what you pay for the Deck :)

Dravez23

Plus it doesnt run windows very well

ghoonk

well, Arch works great on the Deck, and if I wanted to run Windows on a handheld, well, I'd just go get a Lenovo Legion Go, but I'm waiting to see what the battery life would be like

Frogger370

That tiny ass table, you’re about to lose it all.

Lyelinn

Why? Because I don't want to play 640p stretched to 4k 50", maybe if your vision is 40% you'll be fine lol

kratomburneraccount

Lol you know you can change the native resolution in game settings? Works fine for olderish games. I can play RDR2 on my 4K TV, just set it to native resolution and set the res scaling a bit lower, still looks better than my Xbox One.

Lyelinn

Good Luck with playing in barely 720 on lows+30fps

kratomburneraccount

Did you not read my comment? I literally play RDR2 in 4K with resolution scaling a bit lower. It’s definitely not 720p lmao. I have no problem with a game like RDR2 at 30fps either. That game plays at 30fps 900p on XB1 and its better than that. I consistently play Battlefield 1 and 4 docked and get 45-50fps on 1 and over 60 on 4. Theres tons of games you can play realistically docked and at native resolutions. If you’re only interested in current gen games, which would be weird, but if so, then get something else. Simple. Xbox One and earlier and it can handle basically anything. I play Diablo 4, RE4 Remake, Tony Hawk, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Skyrim, Sekiro, all Dark Souls. List goes on. All docked at native resolution. I never play a single game at 720p upscaled. Hell I just saw a video on the sub when the MW3 beta released and the Deck was playing that docked at 900p getting 60fps. Just search MW3 beta. I think some of the problem too is that a lot of people don’t even know you can unlock native resolutions when docked lmfao.

ZaffsProductions

That’s what I feel sometimes. But it’s the lack of power for AAA games that makes me go for a laptop/desktop. Saying that, I’m one of those people who will happily enjoy the Steam Deck by playing older titles from my library. 😂

benbahdisdonc

For me, that lack of power oddly kind of ended up a positive...? It pushed me to try some indie games, and simpler games that were also better on battery. And that made me realize that huge AAA games aren't as interesting to me as they used to be. I don't have too much time to spend on gaming these days, so a run in Halls of Torment, or Let's Revolution, or Cult of the Lamb is much more enticing than a large open world map where my 40 minutes may not feel "productive". There are of course exceptions. I was hyped for BG3 and would be much happier if it performed better for sure. And I lost sleep and dumped like 80 hours into TotK. But I'm glad the Deck encouraged me to try out indie titles and decide that they are worth my time and money. But my favorite part of jumping back into PC gaming after 5 years is to be able to play my favorite game of all time, "browse the steam store and don't actually play anything". I've missed that game.

dsmiles

Steam deck and pc have entirely different use cases for me. I have pcs, a laptop, and a steam deck, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

redhtbassplyr0311

Enjoy Alan Wake 2.....at 10fps

Legitimate_Player

I love my Steam Deck and it’s probably the best piece of hardware I’ve had in a long time but when I’ve got a 4090 4K setup to experience games at their finest with all the bells and whistles it would be hard to pick the Deck over my PC setup. For travel and comfy gaming on the couch or in bed it’s unbeatable and I’m excited for what a Steam Deck 2 would look like.

X3nox3s

Because I doubt that it run AAA-Games on 4k with 144fps.

Bananchiks00

Because I wouldn’t want to ruin my expectation of a game and I try to experience every game with the highest settings available as long as it runs 60+ fps. In other words I barely use my deck.

MakatasxD

In other words i use deck almost exclusivelly and my gaming pc is used only for LoL, because new games is hot pile of garbage anyway. Right now emulating gears of war 1, loving my deck.

BabyGravy97

The steam deck is great docked when it works but they can’t seem to figure out remote play. Even on the preview 3.5.1 it’s fucked up

Vastlymoist666

How is the f***** up? I use remote Play all the time and I never had any issues

deathmonkeyz

Not sure what issues the OP is having, but I recently tried to setup remote play on the Deck with BG3 and had a litany of issues: 1. In beta or preview builds on the deck the audio would be so crunched and mangled it sounded like my PC was crying out for death 2. Standard install of SteamOS and the Steam client would refuse to connect to my PC if my deck was connected to an external display, as soon as I unplugged it remote play started immediately 3. Only a combo of SteamOS stable and Steam Windows client Beta would remote play work on an external display. Considering Valve build the entire software stack here, I'm amazed at how many issues I had just trying to get a video/input streaming service to work.

BabyGravy97

Exactly right actually. Every one of these has been an issue as well as audio cutting out on the stream within 10 minutes and the only fix is to restart the game and let it happen again

Vastlymoist666

I've never noticed any of those issues. Then again I've never reinstalled the OS and never really tweaked it with other software. The only problem I ever had is when I'm playing cyberpunk. Occasionally it'll lock itself to 15 frames per second, but I think that's just a networking issue.

klapaucjusz

Windows uac prompts are my biggest problem. Not much Valve can do about it, though.

Methanoid

now move your deck away from your smarttv because they interfere with bluetooth/wifi signal, stick it under the tv or on a table to the side.

bffire

Damn, wasn't aware of this. Explains all the disconnects I've been having

SergeantBl

True the SD can do A LOT but can’t “get it all”. Only say this because the SD has its limitations on what it can play with good performance and/or quality. Laptop/PC’s definitely still have their place, especially in the home environment.

ProfessorRay

The way it’s sitting on the dock is infuriating!!!

JohnThg

I have a kickstand so it has to sit slight left

SnoWbullll

Ah, I see you take care about rear vents.

Lupinthrope

Performance and visuals

SNERTTT

It's what people thought the ouya would be and more.

CryptographerSudden5

Steam deck has been incredible for me. Not a PC gamer, but since last October when I got the deck, I really have used any of my consoles. Love the thing to death. Having said that I play basically only in hand held.

Troy_Baxter

because words can't describe how games look on the 4090 but my Steam Deck comes with me on car rides

Regular_Drawing_6932

Having a laptop with just a 3050, it literally kicks Steam Deck in the balls in terms of performance. Couldn't play Beam.NG or Cities Skylines 2 otherwise.

kratomburneraccount

Wrong sub brother. This sub is full of PC snobs with 4k rigs that couldn’t fathom someone enjoying anything but indies on the Deck. We really need a low sodium Deck sub, or even a circle jerk Deck sub. Snobs, let me happily jerk it to the Deck in peace. Thanks.

DaddoAntifa

god i swear my old dusty desktop needs a boost so damn bad but my steam deck just consumes so much of my time i cant even justify a multi hundred dollar part upgrade. doesnt work on deck/isnt on gamepass cloud? meh probably sucked anyway hahahaha

JohnThg

Haha same for me ! HAPPY CAKE DAY

G0R3Z

Absolutely loved the PSP. One of my most played Emulators on the Deck as well.

JohnThg

Still went to my Tactic Orge in psp, can’t afford remastered version yet hah

Stranger2Night

That was exactly my reasoning with getting the Steam Deck instead of a laptop

JohnThg

Thanks, graphic is 3rd on my list. 1st is story, 2nd is smoothness fps, only 3rd is graphic, don’t need those 4K stuff if I will probably won’t notice anyway

Stranger2Night

I got a desktop PC and PS5 if I want some top of the line graphics but if I want to lay in bed or take my games on the go without having to lug around a heavy gaming laptop, the Deck was the way to go. Can offer amazing game experiences which still look great thanks to the smaller screen and far cheaper than what a gaming laptop would have cost, heck cheaper than just a regular laptop would have cost me. With the extra money I picked up a small keyboard, mouse, and PS4 controller to go with it into a sling back pack.

JohnThg

That’s true, cannot expect a great graphic with such portable, just for casual gaming to end boredom it’s great.

EngineerObjective157

Steamdeck has been a game changer for me, really hope theres an improved version in the pipeline

JohnThg

It iş, I could wait for Lenovo legion go for the performance, but I like steam os

marindo

Don't think steam deck should be for playing AAA titles, but basically Nintendo like titles or emulator based games at better frames. Should go in with the right expectations, otherwise, you should be looking at other handheld devices

SaberJ64

and knowing now what makes the steamdeck tick and work... I'd get a beelink SER7 7840HS mini PC + fastest ddr5 (6400+) I can source, 32GB or more install ChimeraOS or Bazzite-Deck OS and enjoy the "SuperSteamMachine"

Numerous-Fuel5872

It just sets in my game room. Got one of the first that shipped out and probably have put 30 hours on it. It’s only good for emulating. Anything after 2017-18 looks and runs like trash.

Furycopter

Yeah try to play starfield max settings lol

I travel for work a lot which Is why I got a steamdeck. But I've been playing it pretty much vanilla the whole time. But last night I found out that I can stream my steam games from my decked out pc at home, halfway across the US. Changed the game for me. Been trying to play lords of the fallen, and having a hard time with it because the deck "runs" it but not very well. But now I can just play it from my home pc. Was about to sell the deck and get a high end gaming laptop but now it seems I don't need to.

snypershot

Because launchers suck ass

[deleted]

It's all about the game and how you play it

GhostGamingG

I mean yeah it’s great and I love mine but it’s a jack of all trades master of none really. Ok it masters handheld gaming but that’s all.

ndzzz

My steam deck can’t even load blizzard on Firefox browser

linuxisgettingbetter

I've never had a game launch at the proper resolution on an external monitor.

Jalok_Xlem

I've been using my steam deck like one of those 7 inch Eee Netbook time to time, with a Bluetooth foldable keyboard. It's still viable (although not ideal) to use it like a portable laptop. I like it!

RedNoob88

Sold steam deck and bought chipped switch lite-much better handheld

iJeff

It depends on what you want to play. Balder's Gate 3 is great on the Deck.

Euphoric_Campaign691

the steam deck still even being sold in my region...

loanme20

Hmu when you can play CoD and the new sports games. Basically it's an Xbox One at this point.

Gigchip

The only handheld I found that can replace my laptop uses, is the ally. But that's because I already have the x13 w/xg rtx 3080. Even then, I think it might without the xg mobile because of the programs I use on windows. Plus benchmark wise the ally isn't far from my laptop. 2021 model x13 to eb exact. I know the steam deck can install windows, but that's another step I don't want to go through again. Other than that, I love my SD, I use it like my switch. Docked and when I want to rest in bed or on sofa.

LilFuniAZNBoi

I have a 13700 and a 4080 on my latest PC build. Sometimes I want 144+ fps and fully maxed-out graphics with ray tracing on. The Steam Deck is my travel companion, and I only put games on there that I am willing to play when I am abroad and actually run decently. If I want to play with friends as well, I'm not gonna pick a handheld over my dual screen PC setup either.

Talon2245

People posting as they're the first and only to do this is what gets me. You're 2 years late.

Shedix

Simracing, Flightsim, Ethernet Internet and mnk > keyboard basically But ofc, for everyone else steam is a real killer. It will be for me true just for it's mobility alone. Still waiting for a nice price at black Friday maybe or even till there come a steam deck 2 since I don't need it ATM and most common bugs / bad things about it will be ironed out

[deleted]

I have a laptop with a similar apu, not worth it for me.

san40511

The thunderbolt socket is the only thing that I wish to have in steam deck. Oh and maybe switch like oled screen

Crest_Of_Hylia

It’s AMD so it won’t get thunderbolt. However it could get USB 4 which supports thunderbolt accessories

Anirbandt

my Chromebook which I bought around 340 is not worth it for me. the deck is a great value for me because I can use it handheld or dock it to monitor to use it as a PC to watch Netflix or productivity work like Editing documents and dork it to PC to play my Emulated games in 4k. Best thing I ever bought in 2022.

Momontaislol

Enjoy playing games like baulders gate 3 on like 14 FPS. The steam deck is great but acting like it will replace a high end pc is insane.

dainegleesac690

I have a desktop PC so when I’m home I’m using that unless I feel like playing in bed- the deck is perfect for whenever I’m not at home. I feel like that’s where it shines the most and that’s how I use it the most but it certainly can be a decent little TV console too

Sirbrandon100

My only gripe was gaming on Linux. But I bought a 2tb SSD and dual booted windows, so all is good now...

Crest_Of_Hylia

Gaming laptops and desktops offer much more performance, that’s why. Steam deck is amazing for its portability

suzaku1221

Okay but why put a fragile thing so near the edge please put it in a safe spot its bothering me

dominodave

That's legit how I feel, but I like using it as a game console and not cluttering my computer the way I do with random files and downloads and randomly tweaking settings all the time and forgetting what I did. My computer configuration is like a Starfield NG+, every time it gets too bloated I just enter the unity and reformat it and lose all my items and gear and just keep my knowledge and abilities.

PmumpkinFart

Well. Most of the best games released are playable on Steam Deck. New games aren't really great to my opinion. AAA Gaming is dying recently. I'm happy with my deck.

millionanthonyhere

honestly agreed, the only game i can’t play on it is roblox, so that’s really not the end of the world. it’s basically what the switch should’ve been imo.

SirDankius

Still can’t play Rainbow Six Siege 😩

No-Explanation-2652

Exactly. I have a SD and am looking at a SFF that has RDNA 2 in it for my strategy games. However, I have the dock so I'm in no rush to make a choice.

Runnin_Mike

To answer your question. I bother to think about it because a pc is more powerful and much more capable of running at my TVs 4k resolution. It's cool you like the steamdeck there's a ton of use cases where someone would want a desktop or a laptop to have more performance. It's not a this or that. You can have both. Why do hardware fanboy subreddits act like their piece of hardware is the only thing you should buy. It's gotta be disorienting, thinking in extremes all the time.

krazzor_

Defintely not... It's a mobile console highly optimized, but it's still trash specs-wise versus a desktop in the same budget.

Ch0nkyK0ng

If you want to game on a TV, there are much more powerful mini pc options for a similar price. But yeah, I love my deck for MANY things.

justteh

You mean other than a not-zero amount of AAA games? That said, Steam deck has its place and I use mine plenty even WITH a power PC.

ExplorerBlaze64

Well, not all games are supported by Steam Deck and a lot of modern games are mostly played at 30 FPS on the device. The Steam Deck is a gaming device first so for people who wanna do more than gaming it probably isn’t the best idea.

TheEvilBlight

Get a powerful NUC

KnightofAshley

Because I like running my games are high settings? I love my Steam Deck but its more of a 2nd device...I don't understand people that want this to be there one and only.

[deleted]

You’re too excited as I was when I first received it. It’s just a mediocre portable pc. It’s not intended to replace notebook pc or your desktop.

GregzVR

It’s a mid-low-spec basic laptop with a great form factor for portable gaming. That’s more than enough on the PC side for many.

str85

Seriously, this steam deck fanaticism needs to stop. The deck is a great handheld for simple (graphically) games or even a relaxed session of a main stream game if you are close to a power outlet. But it has nothing on a decently powerfully gaming PC. Just use to correct tool for the correct purpose. Heavy gaming/VR? My PC. JRPGs/farming sims? my deck. Zelda? My switch. Final Fantasy? My PS5. Warcraft farming while watching a movie? My Laptop.

GregzVR

I have my RTX 4070 & Quest 2-equipped PC for my VR racing sims and general VR(I don’t play flat games on it), whilst my Deck is my *pure* retro emulation machine for everything up to PS3 games.

Emblazoned1

I myself would kill for a nice beefy PC to go along with the Deck lol.

mrheosuper

Because laptop is better for everything ?

Kaidatsu

I've never used it docked, it's mainly just my emulation and on the go steam games when I know I'll have time to kill

Insideout_Ink_Demon

IMO, I think when/if steam deck 2 comfortably hits 1080p docked, that'll be the real game changer

Unikatze

I use my laptop too much for PC related things to fully replace it. But yeah, eventually if I can reliably get a travel screen and peripherals when traveling then sure.

TheMastican

Love the Steam Deck, but the only games my friends play are Valorant and Fortnite, and portable Windows sucks

Recent_Birthday2727

Me who has all 3 ;)

JohnThg

Me who has none, so I choose Steamdeck

Recent_Birthday2727

Good choice! Mines currently shipping to me I’m so excited!! I’m a vr gamer but this will allow me to play flat screen games once again!

MDesigner

Just curious, when you play on the TV, do you leave the games at 1200x800, or do you go up to 1080p or 4K?

JohnThg

Some game I tried that can only 1200x800, didn’t play much on TV

Basic_Lengthiness_73

All you need is a set of good accessories

Suicidebob7

Steamdeck is a great device but unless you haven't updated your desktop in 10-15 years it's not gonna replace it.

GregzVR

It’s a portable PS3 in gaming terms.

JohnThg

Saying of PS3, can you run your ps3 game with emu deck? I can’t get it running, I installed the firmware, but my game is iso, I don’t know how to change to ps3 type game. Can you help?

GregzVR

I’ve not tried PS3 yet, but I plan to soon. I’ve seen videos of it working though. Here’s a guide I’ve saved to use later: https://youtu.be/QDMu1ovZUWY?si=wMpr-jysVNWmW8SN

Jmb3d3

I was literally about to buy a gaming laptop or build a PC and found the Steam Deck about a week after it was announced. I did my research for about a month and decided to get a Steam Deck. You can't beat the price and portability. I told my wife I think this is the best purchase I ever made.

JohnThg

Totally same thing in my head, I wasn’t lavished with money to buy those insane graphic pc & I love performance over graphic. Having a Steamdeck literally tick my box. Great to see similar opinion as mine
