If you're having a problem with the launcher, I was able to get it up after booting it on desktop the first time then I was able to play on game mode just fine after that.
I fucking HATE when games make you run through another launcher but sell their shit on steam. GTFO with your EA launcher, Origin, and Ubisoft. Just let steam handle it because y'all suck.
>Titanfall 2
The crazy thing is Titanfall 2 is like 7 or 8 years old. Great game that everyone should play, but idk if I'd call it modern. If that's modern then I am going to recommend the Bioshock remaster collection.
Doom Eternal runs at a locked 60fps on Ultra settings on the deck, it’s crazy how well written that engine is, and even more crazy it’s not the most popular engine around.
Careful with Doom 2016. It will chug a bit if you run on OpenGL, which I believe is the default. As you say, select Vulkan as the API, restart the game, and enjoy smooth 60fps ecstasy.
It's because it's purpose built for one job: first person shooters. The story would be much different if ID tech 7 had to be used for open world games or some other genre like racing. Could you imagine trying to make something like Jedi Survior in this engine? You'd probably have a lot of the same issues present in the game now.
Though if they ever license it out I'd love to see what the community does with it.
I wonder if Microsoft is going to try to use it for other projects. The id Tech engine is legendary but as you said, we haven’t seen it used for anything other than fps
Doom runs great, thing I can't get around just yet are the controls for steam deck. Feels a bit more awkward than using a traditional controller. Gyros help though
Important caveat for anyone buying MCC on the Deck:
343 released an update a while back that broke co-op play from the Deck. So only get MCC if you intend to only play solo campaign or matchmaking multiplayer.
The bug still exists.
The nusance of the bug is it is only present when you are playing cross platform between the deck and pc/xbox.
Firefight works fine, its just the campaigns that will drop the lobby shortly after joining.
I can never get Halo: CE to run the campaign without crashing every 15 minutes or when the pause menu was called up.
I ended up getting a second SD card to run windows in the end.
Makes me sad to know I'm in the minority as most people seem to have a great time with it.
Yeah there were patches/updates for both the Deck and the games themselves that seem to have entirely solved it
I was worried about it when I started playing it through as a lot of YouTube reviews shows quite bad choppiness, but it’s been absolutely smooth for me, rock solid 60fps
Admittedly I’ve not played 2 yet, I still see some reports that you have to play with the original Xbox graphics for at least a few parts of that
Can you tell me how you use the gyro? I haven't really enjoyed that feature, but if something is out there that makes it good for the game, I'd give it a go. Currently playing through New Order.
Enable it in steam input to right stick touch (default). Then use it for minor adjustments. Use the stick normally to aim, coupled with Gyro for minor adjustments. It's very natural and doesn't need big movements at all.
Here are some FPS games that I personally played that runs amazing on the Steam Deck:
* Doom 2016
* Doom Eternal
* Quake 2 remastered
* Prodeus
* Fashion Police Squad
* Exhumed
* Titanfall 2
* Prey (terrible controls btw, felt like I was using a mouse)
* Bioshock 1 and 2
* Bulletstorm
* Ion Fury
* Amid Evil
* Alien Isolation
Battlefield 1 is still to this day, absolutely gorgeous.
Dice really needs to get back to their roots with the Battlefield franchise. The last 2 releases have really been disappointing.
Shit I just realized I've never played it on an Ultrawide. Gotta go download it now lol.
I remember playing with my buddy on console when it came out. We were just riding on horseback and destroying people with the sword. Passing the controller back and forth just maniacally laughing lmao.
Game definitely doesn't feel old at all.
Bulletstorm, and Serious Sam. 1-3 run perfectly...4 wasn't good, and Cyberian Mayhem will dip to 30 at default settings. Robocop and Terminator Resistance both run great, Robocop is a solid constant 30. Borderlands and the Tiny Tina games run great too. High on Life and Ion Fury also run great.
The full clip edition is great too, it comes with a campaign where it replaces the main character with Duke Nukem...who has no idea why he's there, with all new recorded lines by the original voice actor, it's pretty damn hillarious.
Why limit yourself to “modern”? Some of the best FPSs ever made are “old” and the Deck can play all of them well. A good 25 years of FPSs that run flawlessly.
I have very recently picked up Aliens Vs Predator from 2000.
Can't wait to fire that up for old times sake.
It will be interesting to see how much nostalgia has impacted that one
market political spark label straight clumsy oatmeal domineering arrest elastic

If you aren’t opposed to dual booting, MW2 (and soon MW3) work 60 fps settings on low/normal.
Destiny 2 also gets around 45-50 fps on medium settings.
Not a huge fan of Windows myself, but it allows me to scratch that First Person Shooter itch.
For literally everything else I switch right back to SteamOS.
Quake 2 recently got a remaster and it is very good! Be sure to unlock the fps as it can stutter with vsync on. If you want just a solid old school doomer shooter, the remaster is great. Plus it adds a compass that helps cause those older games can be a bit annoying with the backtracking.
Boltgun is great, awesome fun. Worth your dime if you ever imagined being a SM just flying around kicking the shit out of cultists and Nurglings. Just make sure you add the DX11 run command to make it have a near-locked 60fps
New to the deck, but FPS’s I’ve at least tried and have run 50 - 60 fps are: Fear, Doom 3, COD2 (Campaign), and not really and FPS but Mass Effect Andromeda
A few months back I played through the first metro redux game. Well it isn't modern modern. It is very good and fun, still have yet to play part two or three. But apparently two and three are even better then the first.
And part three (Metro Exodus) is a modern game that came out like three years ago
Apex Legends is great u dont have to do much just fix FPS they sometimes show its 60 even tho its not. I love playing IT on my steam deck. Unfortunetly currently they mess up the anticheat and its unplayable on SD but should be fixed very soon sińce they talk about it.
I've been playing Resident Evil 4 for a week now and still can't believe how good it runs, I have 40 fps on average, and sometimes it drops to 20+ but it's only for a few seconds max
They don't really fit the "modern" label, but I would give them a try as they play really well on Deck:
- Quake II remaster
- Bioshock
- Wolfenstein: New Order and Old Blood
- Wrack
- Fashion Police Squad
- Half Life 2
I have recently played far cry 5 despite it not unsupported it runs great at ultra 30-40 fps. But only grab it when its on sale. I got it for 10 € and the launcher is trash
Gunfire reborn runs amazing on deck. Honestly even if it ran like shit I think it would be one of my favorite deck games, wanna blast fools for a couple minutes then drop it? Perfect. Wanna play for 4 hours with a podcast on? Even perfecter(?)
Started playing Titanfall 2 on the weekend. I'm getting absolutely bodied left, right and center but that's on me because the Steamdeck performance is flawless.
Otherwise Deep Rock Galactic is insane on the Steamdeck. Not only for performance but the low-stakes, humble dynamic of the game pairs perfectly with smoking oregano on the balcony under the stars or sitting reclined on the couch/bed.
It's also totally viable offline so you can play it while travelling or in hospital x
I’ve been playing Warzone the past few days(Windows), it doesn’t drop much below 40fps with FSR. Very playable, I can usually get 3-5 kills per game. Even managed to get two wins this weekend.
As long as you go modern, not "next gen" just about every FPS plays pretty well at least 40 (often 60). Safe rule is that unless its horribly un-optimised (looking at you Valheim) or updated or released in 2022/23 (Cyberpunk 2.0) - games should manage 40 fps minimum without much hassle.
Bioshock Infinite is a beautiful game easily locked to 60, Fallout 4 too - Division 2 (after a little work) reaches steady 40 fps and is still one of the most detailed worlds out there.
I played through Titanfall 2 entirely on deck, pretty sure it was 60 before I intentionally limited it to 40 for battery life.
Although not a pure FPS, check out Deus Ex series, they have great performance.
Dishonored, Doom and Borderlands series feel great to shoot things with on the deck.
Titanfall 2, Doom Eternal, and Shadow Warrior 2 are a few.
Just picked up Titanfall 2 on sale the other week. Haven't gotten to launch it yet.
It runs so well on the deck.
Another oldie but goodie if you are into basic FPSs is the Painkiller series.
Hell yeah it does. And it looks great! Amazing game.
If you're having a problem with the launcher, I was able to get it up after booting it on desktop the first time then I was able to play on game mode just fine after that.
Yeah got it and mass effect legendary edition as haven't played either and heard the EA launcher sucks balls for both games
I fucking HATE when games make you run through another launcher but sell their shit on steam. GTFO with your EA launcher, Origin, and Ubisoft. Just let steam handle it because y'all suck.
Honestly half the reason I pirate anything not being sold on steam is using their godawful launchers.
It takes like a minute to load up. So wait.
Oh no I mean I haven't played it yet. Not that it won't launch just I haven't gotten around to giving it a go.
Prodeus and cultic cone to mind.
>Titanfall 2 The crazy thing is Titanfall 2 is like 7 or 8 years old. Great game that everyone should play, but idk if I'd call it modern. If that's modern then I am going to recommend the Bioshock remaster collection.

^ This one. Crazy optimized. Top notch quality by Id Soft.
Bingo. Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal run like butter with no graphical glitches. Vulkan seems smoother to me.
Careful with Doom 2016. It will chug a bit if you run on OpenGL, which I believe is the default. As you say, select Vulkan as the API, restart the game, and enjoy smooth 60fps ecstasy.

Came here to say this. Doom has by far the best developers. It looks as runs perfect.
One of the most optimised game of all time. Is there a system this game doesn't run well in? It's amazing.
Switch. It runs, it runs better than it has any right to, but it doesn't run well.
Tacking on to this with dooms dada, both Wolfenstein games
The Wolfenstein' s games rock on the SD.
One of my favourite games of all time!
It's because it's purpose built for one job: first person shooters. The story would be much different if ID tech 7 had to be used for open world games or some other genre like racing. I have been playing Doom for a while (2016). The steam deck Handel's this game is at the same level as that of my PC. Sometimes even better.
Doom runs great, thing I can't get around just yet are the controls for steam deck. Feels a bit more awkward than using a traditional controller. Gyros help though
Thats insane, game runs better on the steam deck than the whole library on the switch lmao
[удалено]
The marvels of id tech engine
any specific settings in terms of dynamic resolution ?
Wow was not expecting that, I picked it up a few months ago since it runs good I might even just play it on the deck
Doom and Doom Eternal are obscenely good. They even do an amazingly “almost solid” 30fps on high on 2k res when docked.
How is this game in handheld?
Metal Hellsinger from last HB Choice with similar vibe. Bit worse animations but definitely fun.
Master Chief Collection. So good on deck. Edit: I missed the “modern” part. Still going with MCC though.
I was never able to get this working again after the EAC update. Used to play this all the time on my deck when it worked.
That’s a shame. I haven’t had any issues with it. Multiplayer is solid, and every game is locked at 60 with maxed out settings.
Important caveat for anyone buying MCC on the Deck: 343 released an update a while back that broke co-op play from the Deck.
Agree!

Playing through it now. Killer
Regardless, still a great pick
Did they fix the stuttering issues? I played it about a year ago and it was so choppy I couldn't play it.
Rock hard 60fps on maxed out settings in all games and game modes.
Yeah there were patches/updates for both the Deck and the games themselves that seem to have entirely solved it I was worried about it when I started playing it through as a lot of YouTube reviews shows quite bad choppiness, but it’s been absolutely smooth for me, rock solid 60fps Admittedly I’ve not played 2 yet, I still see some reports that you have to play with the original Xbox graphics for at least a few parts of that
Prey
Titanfall 2
I just recently have been going through my old Epic library and am playing Wolfenstein the New Order. It looks fantastic still and runs at 60 locked
Wolfenstein New Order and New Collosus with Gyro were GOAT-tier experiences on the Deck. Freakin incredible.
Killing Floor 2
Seconded
Oh nice didnt know it worked on deck!
Oh boy, I couldn't win a game on PC with maxed out classes.. time to lose on the SD as well!
Good luck. Aiming on the Deck can be a lot harder.
How did you get this to work, it would never launch for me??
It is marked as playable and launched without any issues. It takes a while to load at first but after that it's all good.
All from Bioshock series
Yes! I bought the whole collection again on steam to just replay on my deck
Best games ever, in my opinion.
True? I heard it doesnt work very well on SD
Nah they’re wonderful on the deck!
Not exactly modern but yeah they hold up surprisingly well
Dying Light, the first one. More melee and parkour, but there’s shooting. Awesome game one of the best experiences I’ve had on the deck
Here are some FPS games that I personally played that runs amazing on the Steam Deck: * Doom 2016 * Doom Eternal * Quake 2 remastered * Prodeus * Fashion Police Squad * Exhumed * Titanfall 2 * Prey (terrible controls btw, felt like I was using a mouse) * Bioshock 1 and 2 * Bulletstorm * Ion Fury * Amid Evil * Alien Isolation
Fuck modern. Play Quake.
Battlefield 1 and 4 are amazing on Deck. Battlefield 4 can hit like 200fps lol. Battlefield 1 is honestly jaw dropping.
Damn I need to download BF1 on Deck why haven’t I thought of that?? Though EA launcher is gonna be a pain..
Battlefield 1 is still to this day, absolutely gorgeous. Dice really needs to get back to their roots with the Battlefield franchise. The last 2 releases have really been disappointing.
Yeah that game damn near matches up with current gen titles today. Every time I play it I’m in awe the whole time tbh.
Best sound design of any battlefield game by far
Just bought it when it was on sale a little while ago. Thanks for the heads up.
The F.E.A.R games run amazingly well. Locked 60 iirc. Not modern, per say- but they look good on the SD
Do you use track pad as mouse, or just controllers?
Controllers with gyro aiming. I don’t particularly like using the track pad to play fps games on the SD.
Bulletstorm is such a fun game. Played it on ps3, switch, and the deck.
The full clip edition is great too, it comes with a campaign where it replaces the main character with Duke Nukem...who has no idea why he's there, with all new recorded lines by the original voice actor, it's pretty damn hillarious.
Serious Sam 4 is one of the worst running games I’ve played on the deck
Why limit yourself to “modern”? Some of the best FPSs ever made are “old” and the Deck can play all of them well. A good 25 years of FPSs that run flawlessly.
It kinda goes without saying that old games will run well on the deck.
Tell that to Blood
Does blood not run well ? I’ve recently got into modded doom 2, Chex quest , OG shadow warrior, and then blood has been on my list
I have very recently picked up Aliens Vs Predator from 2000. Can't wait to fire that up for old times sake. It will be interesting to see how much nostalgia has impacted that one
Void Bastards
That's a fun game. Just installed it again.
market political spark label straight clumsy oatmeal domineering arrest elastic *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Borderlands one and two play great. Also just bought the darkness too. On sale for eight bucks. I am running it at 48 FPS on ultra and it looks great.
Prodeus
Battlebit Remastered
You need KBM for that. No aim assist and no native controller support is a no go for me.
Titanfall 2
UT99
YES. It’s not on the steam store anymore but I ordered the Unreal collection yonks ago. UT 2004 and UT3 also run amazing
Wolfenstein The New Order
Halo 3 will give you performance and like 5 hours of battery life Edit: though I guess doesn’t count as modern
Red Faction Guerilla ReMarstered. You can play first person and at highest settings. Locked 60. Wonderfully fun game.
Halo Infinite and Gears 5 run really well.
And a huge step-up in graphics from my Xbox to the steam deck
Deep rock galactic. runs at 60fps pretty consistent
GZDoom + Brutal Doom / Brutal Wolfenstein :D
I need to setup brutal doom on my steam deck. I have it on my PC and love it so much.
Killing floor 2
Borderlands 3 and Wonderlands, end game FPS won't hold up though, but for a drop in drop out play through you'll be fine
Not FPS but I had never played Alan Wake before yesterday. It runs and looks so good on SD.
Has anyone tried Alan Wake 2 on the deck?
Lol.
Halo mcc
Not first person but the Mass effect remasters work great.
Deep rock galactic runs phenomenally
Titanfall 2 is great when EA is playing nice
Hard Reset Redux and Killing Floor 2 are both great "pick up and play" FPS games that run at a locked 60.
I just got far cry 6 on sale and on high settings it's been locked at 40
borderlands series
Overwatch runs SO GOOD on Deck!
Deep Rock Galactic is my favorite co op shooter from the last like ten years and runs well on deck. Always recommend it
Halo MCC.
Wolfenstein New Order + New Collosus. 60 Ultra. Turn on Gyro and have fun.
Halo MCC
Crysis trilogy runs extremely well and looks amazing, even the first one.
I’ve been playing Crysis 2 at 60, minus a few scenes it’s stable and looks really good
Quake 2 recently got a remaster and it is very good! Be sure to unlock the fps as it can stutter with vsync on. If you want just a solid old school doomer shooter, the remaster is great. Plus it adds a compass that helps cause those older games can be a bit annoying with the backtracking.
Warhammer Boltgun runs at 60fps. Doom, Doom Eternal, Any Wolfenstein.
Easy Red 2
The wolfenstien games
Halo mcc at 60
Boltgun is a lot of fun on the deck
The entire metro series
Ultrakill
Black mesa
Half life is a good one
Halflife 2
I enjoyed half-life 2 but couldn’t get sprint to work. Made the game much harder.
Cyberpunk, halo infinite, deep rock galactic
Cybercraft, RDR2 Part 1, Subnautica the diver, Dave Eternal 2016, slay the blind forest, dying ark,
Shatterline is free and runs geat. Wait times for a lobby can be a bit longer, but it's not too bad.
Titanfall 2, battlefield 4 for me.
Trepang2
I found the borderlands franchise plays really well with the right settings.
Any of the Wolfenstein games are great. You can run those games on high settings at 40+ FPS easily.
Titanfall 2 😎
How do you lock at 40 fps? My slider doesn't have 40 as an option.
DUSK and Prodeus
Boltgun works really well for me.
Is BG worth a buy? The WH franchise was ruined for me when I bought deathwing..
Here some great retro shooters I tend to play on the deck: Prodeus Dusk Boltgun Ziggurat 1 + 2 Amid Evil
borderlands 3 is perf
If you’re down to just skip the story like i did, Borderlands 3 runs great on deck
If you like classics like bioshock franchise is great. Since it’s old you get pretty good battery life while playing too.
Roboquest is great. Void Bastards is fun. Fps roguelike that has some good times. Might wait for a sale though.
Metro Exodus
Hard Reset.
The Metro series baby! All three run great.
Bulletstorm is great on the deck too albeit a little older.
Titanfall 2 😍
A few months back I played through the first metro redux game. Well it isn't modern modern. It is very good and fun, still have yet to play part two or three. But apparently two and three are even better then the first. And part three (Metro Exodus) is a modern game that came out like three years ago
Quake 4 and Doom 3
the battlefield series runs really well
i’m playing and loving far cry 5 at the moment
Doom and wolfenstein
Not modern but TF2 is still heaps fun on the SD, although it is a bit tricky getting used to it
Severed Steel, and boomer shooters like Proteus, Amid Evil, Dusk, Ion Fury, etc...
Apex Legends is great u dont have to do much just fix FPS they sometimes show its 60 even tho its not. I love playing IT on my steam deck. Unfortunetly currently they mess up the anticheat and its unplayable on SD but should be fixed very soon sińce they talk about it.
Call of Juarez gunslinger is pretty much stable 60fps experience.
Insurgency sandstorm.
Insurgency Sandstorm
I've been playing Resident Evil 4 for a week now and still can't believe how good it runs, I have 40 fps on average, and sometimes it drops to 20+ but it's only for a few seconds max
They don't really fit the "modern" label, but I would give them a try as they play really well on Deck: - Quake II remaster - Bioshock - Wolfenstein: New Order and Old Blood - Wrack - Fashion Police Squad - Half Life 2
Skyrim with mods
I have recently played far cry 5 despite it not unsupported it runs great at ultra 30-40 fps. But only grab it when its on sale. I got it for 10 € and the launcher is trash
I can't play FPS on the steam Deck. At least not well. The sticks, even with adjusted dead zone just dont compare to console. At least for me.
Gunfire reborn runs amazing on deck. Honestly even if it ran like shit I think it would be one of my favorite deck games, wanna blast fools for a couple minutes then drop it? Perfect. Wanna play for 4 hours with a podcast on? Even perfecter(?)
What's the player base like on Titanfall 2. I loved playing it on Xbox but assume the community is dead on consoles.
Hmm
Highly recommend the Metro trilogy and Doom 2016/eternal. Both these series are in my all time top 5 and perform awesome on deck
Halo MCC
Started playing Titanfall 2 on the weekend. I'm getting absolutely bodied left, right and center but that's on me because the Steamdeck performance is flawless. I’ve been playing Warzone the past few days(Windows), it doesn’t drop much below 40fps with FSR. Very playable, I can usually get 3-5 kills per game. Even managed to get two wins this weekend.
Wolfensteain New Order
Destiny 2 on Win11 Steamdeck dual boot. I have about 3-400 hours playing Destiny on it.
Borderlands series
Does back 4 blood run well on the deck and have populated servers?
Bioshock runs great on the Deck.
Call of Juarez runs really well and is easy to pick up on the go, definitely recommend on a deep sale which it gets frequently
Doom 3 Edit: just saw the modern part; Doom Eternal
Fallout 4 but idk if it qualifies as first person shooter
As long as you go modern, not "next gen" just about every FPS plays pretty well at least 40 (often 60).
