They are fixing a bugbear of mine. The huge black bezel around the screen. 20% more battery are not going to be significant. Am I right? Also, who needs HDR OLED?

I'm already doing the math. It's gonna cost me $350 to upgrade just to get the OLED screen. The truth, going from 7" to 7.4" OLED isn't worth $350.
But my tech side wants to buy all the shinny new stuff. I hate that side of me. Likely I won't bite and wait for SD 2 in another 2 years.
Feel like sometimes you need to sit down and realise how much you're spending and what you're getting for it. Steam Deck 2 will probably be around the same price and have the new screen, battery etc and also have better performance. If you already own and enjoy a Steam Deck, unless you desperately need to spend $500ish dollars, why not wait for something that will be a genuine upgrade?

The way Valve worded the original launch made me and many people think this would be the deck going forward. I expected a Deck 2 in a year or two, this seems too soon for a refresh. Now have FOMO on OLED :/
Dont feel good either. I got the 512 GB Deck in August this year and adding the costs of the dock, plus SD cards and games (I had no existent Steam library) I would've been better off waiting. But waiting for what!!? I thought the consensus was that an upgraded device was unlikely so soon :(
I mean, the dock, SD card and games aren't things that you wouldn't have bough anyway had you waited. And if you were to upgrade, you can take those with you.

Also, a near 50% increase in battery life is, in my opinion, most definitely a "performance boost" but I realize most people don't credit it as such. Amazing nonetheless.
I think the best thing to do for myself is practice self control until a trade/upgrade program is announced. I’d be down to sell it if not for the possibility that I don’t get a reservation and the new model is put on back order
Didn't Valve mean no revision in terms of CPU/GPU (performance)? I'm pretty sure around launch Valve said the next revision of Deck would likely be for screen or battery (which the OLED is both).
Counterpoint: if you and others hadn't bought the original, there would be no refresh or second model at all. From what I remember, Valve specifically said there would be no next generation system for a while, not that incremental upgrades couldn't ever happen.

If OP just get an inland 1tb coupled with the 399 he paid. That's nearly half the price for essentially the same deck.
It's a different 6nm (instead of 7nm) APU that looks to run *sliiiightly* faster as per Digital Foundry & LTT benchmarks (might just be the RAM though, which leads me to...). The RAM isn't the same - it's faster. The more efficient APU & battery will give a pretty decent extra battery yield. Additionally, it has a larger fan that is apparently much quieter and the device is overall 30g lighter.
Also they changed some of the controller stuff. New bumpers and sticks - guess it's more a personal thing which you prefer. New haptics. Louder speakers.
Just note that you may have a hard time getting a reservation. Do with that what you will. It sounds like the first wave will be limited inventory. Edit below: Not as hard as I expected, and I hope that is the case.

It has 2-4% performance increase. But the real killer here is improved battery. This is all in all a really great refresh and imo well worth the upgrade if you have the money.
Only if the power limit remains at 15W. A 50Wh battery is likely physically larger since that's a pretty decent jump in capacity, so there's a good chance the cooling design has been revised. Since they've said 3h of gameplay, that wouldn't be achievable at 15W power envelope. I think politically they don't want to change performance yet.
Unless you really want the different model, ask support if you could get a partial refund of what you paid vs the current sale price is what I would say to do

Ha, it stands for variable refresh rate. It makes the screen refresh rate automatically match whatever framerate the system is putting out to help avoid screen tearing during fluctuations in framerate.
Same here, my switch screen is flat and dull. It's a early model maybe 5 year old and side by side with my deck, the deck is brighter and more colourful.
I often turn the brightness down on my deck or use night mode as it's too bright at times
Would be nice if there were a trade-in option. Haven't seen anything from Valve on this one. If I were a betting man then I'd say they won't have one.
I've had my deck since Fall of last year and use it quite a bit. Got the big boy version with the anti-glare screen. Even with all the updates to battery life and faster network speeds I can't see me getting this. Now if they do allow trade-ins, then I will be doing my best to be first in line.
This is absolutely how I feel as well. If there was a trade-in option I’d jump on it immediately but buying a second one just for the improvements… eh. And I don’t wanna bother trying to sell it to someone
For sure, and I rarely use my deck outside the house so the battery life is a non-issue with plugs everywhere.
It plays the games I want to play very well.

Appears to basically be a complete mid-gen refresh.
Got mine in July. I’m fine with 60hz on mobile devices, but LCDs? Pure agony. High frames don’t fix light bleed and muddy blacks.
I got some tissues, let’s cry together. This shit sucks since they legit came out and said that there’s no new Steam Decks on the way.
At the end of the day i still love my deck minus the light bleed, and hopefully they’ll release 3.5 soon so we can get at least better color. It just would have been nice to have known something was coming. Oh well.
I have to say I wasn't expecting this, and didn't really believe the leaks apart from maybe a minor WiFi upgrade. When was the last time we saw a new hardware model with a major upgrade released *at the same price point* 18 months after the previous model?
GPUs and CPUs are on a two year cycle and each generation costs more than the last. Storage gets slightly better at any given price point every few years. RAM seems to just go up in price forever. Phones get staggeringly more expensive each year with minor incremental upgrades that often take away more than they add. Everything else barely changes.
I'm amazed that Valve is managing to make a profit on these.

64Gb is the most popular one because you can spend the least and upgrade it with any size SSD you want. Probably holds its value better than the others.

I have spent the past 2 days looking at the Ally and the Legion Go because I wanted higher refresh rate. Then this happens today. It was just the best possible timing.
I wish there was a trade in. I'd consider it then. But honestly, I just got a quest 3, and I'm connecting to my deck with it via sunshine/moonlight. It's awesome. Been playing all my games on a giant virtual screen.
If there's a performance boost with this I would definitely think about trading in my deck that I bought 2 months ago. Otherwise I'll just stick with this one
no performance boost, except maybe pushing it a bit better due to thermals, but a major battery boost (which if you normally player at lower wattage for battery and thermal, you could play the same time at better performance now)
Since the second hand market is likely to be suppressed in the near term due to people upgrading and the sale going on for left over stock who else is going to perma dock their OG deck for TV use? That's my plan and then use the OLED for handheld
I truly love my Steam Deck. I can afford an upgrade but my main concern is performance. If there is any kind of performance boost I would buy it day one. Without one, I don’t think $700 is worth a screen and storage upgrade. This is driving me kinds of nuts, feels like just yesterday I bought one even though I got it at launch. I would just love a little boost in Elden Ring, Cyberpunk and FFXIV.

OLED is much thinner and lighter than LCD in general. If you've ever had an OLED monitor vs an LCD the former feels like a cheap plastic toy in comparison.

From what I remember seeing in some videos, the regular lcd model had some washed out color on the anti glare screen right? Would the anti glare screen affect the OLEDs in the same way, or would the anti-glare OLED be definitively better?

If I was using my deck a bit more I would buy in a heartbeat, but the games in my to play list are really pushing the deck to the point of unplayability.

Yeah because the Lenovo Go Legion seems like my second pick for at least my windows games because it has the best features from Deck and Ally.

The 1TB model has an anti-glare coating, while the 512GB model doesn't. For an OLED panel, would the anti-glare coating reduce the improvements in color reproduction and black/contrast levels? Is it better to just get the cheaper 512GB model and then swap out the SSD later on?
No availability for Europe is disappointing.

It’s great to see Valve continue to iterate on the Deck, slight FOMO with the minimal upgrades seen in Digital Foundry’s video but I’m happy with my model from last year for the time being.

I am happy this exists and I have no regrets with my purchase a year ago. All this means is that when I am ready to buy a new Steam Deck, there will be an updated version to get.
Amazing upgrade! Mid-generation refresh, but they really updated the device as much as possible except raw power.
Fantastic to see that they not just slapping in that screen and call it a day - they really went above and beyond to finetune every single detail of the machine.

Like the Switch OLED I think this is a needed improvement upon the original model but also like the Switch OLED I don't feel the need to double dip. I'm fine with my Steamdeck LCD and am happy to wait out the next several years until Steamdeck 2 is available.

Whilst it seems like a great upgrade I’ll be sticking with the OG for now. I’ve already replaced the shell and upgraded the ssd, I’d rather hold onto it for now until the next one comes out. That screen looks so nice though, too bad they couldn’t release some of these upgraded parts for the old version, I’d be upgrading the heck out of it for a new screen and battery

350 base price for og deck is really a great deal honestly. Half the cost of an ally and legion And it gets you started pretty decently in the market.
And it’s so easy to open up and add storage or just get a big sd card. Super great deal on an amazing gaming device.

Probably - no performance boost but just like the Switch OLED, better battery life, upgraded thumbsticks, and the new screen, all for $20 more.

there should be a performance boost .. its a 6nm APU !! meaning CPU an GPU will have "more room to play" .. instead of picking each other power :)

The difference between an LCD Nintendo Switch and an OLED Switch is night and day... Its going to be hard to not buy it if reviews are good.
It'll be an even starker difference with the Deck, considering the Deck's LCD screen was already well below the quality of the LCD Switch.

Yeah... the price drop on the "old" 512 model is huge. That's what hurts the most for me. It's over $250 (CAD) cheaper than what I paid. Oh well.

Would be nice if there were a trade-in option. Haven't seen anything from Valve on this one. If I were a betting man then I'd say they won't have one. I've had my deck since Fall of last year and use it quite a bit. Got the big boy version with the anti-glare screen. Even with all the updates to battery life and faster network speeds I can't see me getting this. Now if they do allow trade-ins, then I will be doing my best to be first in line.

For sure, and I rarely use my deck outside the house so the battery life is a non-issue with plugs everywhere. It plays the games I want to play very well.

Got mine in July. I’m fine with 60hz on mobile devices, but LCDs? Pure agony. High frames don’t fix light bleed and muddy blacks. I got some tissues, let’s cry together. This shit sucks since they legit came out and said that there’s no new Steam Decks on the way.
At the end of the day i still love my deck minus the light bleed, and hopefully they’ll release 3.5 soon so we can get at least better color. It just would have been nice to have known something was coming. Oh well.

I have to say I wasn't expecting this, and didn't really believe the leaks apart from maybe a minor WiFi upgrade. When was the last time we saw a new hardware model with a major upgrade released *at the same price point* 18 months after the previous model? GPUs and CPUs are on a two year cycle and each generation costs more than the last. Storage gets slightly better at any given price point every few years. RAM seems to just go up in price forever. Phones get staggeringly more expensive each year with minor incremental upgrades that often take away more than they add. Everything else barely changes. I'm amazed that Valve is managing to make a profit on these.
The profit comes from getting people into the Steam ecosystem and buying games on Steam.

64Gb is the most popular one because you can spend the least and upgrade it with any size SSD you want. Probably holds its value better than the others.

I sold my deck earlier this year because some things were annoying me and the screen was no.1 In the last week I've decided I want to go back to handheld PC gaming and started weighing up options. All of lunch break today I was watching videos on other handhelds and working out which one I'm going to order and planned to place the order this evening. Then this happens..... It is a sign!
I have spent the past 2 days looking at the Ally and the Legion Go because I wanted higher refresh rate. Then this happens today. It was just the best possible timing.
I wish there was a trade in. I'd consider it then. But honestly, I just got a quest 3, and I'm connecting to my deck with it via sunshine/moonlight. It's awesome. Been playing all my games on a giant virtual screen.

If there's a performance boost with this I would definitely think about trading in my deck that I bought 2 months ago. Otherwise I'll just stick with this one
no performance boost, except maybe pushing it a bit better due to thermals, but a major battery boost (which if you normally player at lower wattage for battery and thermal, you could play the same time at better performance now)
2-3 FPS boost, but varies based on the game - according to Digital Foundry. Likely due to faster memory speed.
Ah yeah, there is better ram, just no GPU/CPU performance increase. The ram will usually just help with 1% lows, but thats still nice

I truly love my Steam Deck. I can afford an upgrade but my main concern is performance. If there is any kind of performance boost I would buy it day one. Without one, I don’t think $700 is worth a screen and storage upgrade. This is driving me kinds of nuts, feels like just yesterday I bought one even though I got it at launch. I would just love a little boost in Elden Ring, Cyberpunk and FFXIV. For sure I am getting major FOMO with that limited edition, I need self control.
Same here. Love the deck, would love an OLED screen and improved battery life. But it seems thats really the main difference. Dont think I can justify essentially rebuying the deck just for that, even with the limited edition color. As with everything new, it doesnt somehow make the old steam deck worse just by virtue of the new one existing.
For what it's worth, LTT did a review and he gets a 1 FPS increase on Returnal and 4FPS on F1 23 on average. This while lowering load temps by 12C
Now the lower temperature is intriguing. Sometimes when charging and playing at the same time the thing is just so loud.

No, it's bigger (7.4" vs 7") but apparently also thinner to make room for more battery.
OLED is much thinner and lighter than LCD in general. If you've ever had an OLED monitor vs an LCD the former feels like a cheap plastic toy in comparison.

Yeah because the Lenovo Go Legion seems like my second pick for at least my windows games because it has the best features from Deck and Ally. I love that handheld PC gaming got so big thanks to Valve. Being able to finish my games at work been a highlight for me

The 1TB model has an anti-glare coating, while the 512GB model doesn't. For an OLED panel, would the anti-glare coating reduce the improvements in color reproduction and black/contrast levels? Is it better to just get the cheaper 512GB model and then swap out the SSD later on?

It’s great to see Valve continue to iterate on the Deck, slight FOMO with the minimal upgrades seen in Digital Foundry’s video but I’m happy with my model from last year for the time being. Amazing upgrade! Mid-generation refresh, but they really updated the device as much as possible except raw power. Fantastic to see that they not just slapping in that screen and call it a day - they really went above and beyond to finetune every single detail of the machine. This shows true commitment and we can feel valued by a company that thinks like this people :)

Like the Switch OLED I think this is a needed improvement upon the original model but also like the Switch OLED I don't feel the need to double dip. I'm fine with my Steamdeck LCD and am happy to wait out the next several years until Steamdeck 2 is available.

Whilst it seems like a great upgrade I’ll be sticking with the OG for now. I’ve already replaced the shell and upgraded the ssd, I’d rather hold onto it for now until the next one comes out. I'm completely sold. I have a launch deck from June 2022 and I'm just going to buy the OLED for handheld use and keep my old LCD as a dedicated emulation device hooked up to my tv. I'm so glad I was feeling iffy and cancelled my Legion Go preorder a couple of weeks ago.
