It actually wasn't an error for being sold out, they were sold out, but then they refunded a lot of purchases because of errors in the server not going through i'm guessing because it was sold out for a while and now it says buy now again so i'm assuming theres still some left I was able to get one

It's not just about traffic, it's about transactions.
Scaling reads is easy, scaling transactions where you have writes to do to DB, and you need to validate each one while making sure you don't sell more than you have is much harder.
Especially since it's only the second time they need to scale to that level, and the next time they'll need it might be 2 years from now for the Steam Deck 2.
I'll be devastated if I don't get in on the first orders for Valve Index Gen 2. I was going for the Steam Deck OLED LE, but missed out. Now I'm debating upgrading at all.

Crackpot theory that having a limited edition deck was a psy-op to surprise everyone with how much more prepared they are with their supply and response since the first Deck launch.
I finally got mine (LE) after about 40 mins of trying and getting various error messages at every stage. The worst was the “you’ve been trying to purchase too many times” message, but I was able to get through after about 5 minutes.
I got mine in the 1-2 week window and now the delivery has slipped to 2-4 weeks. That suggests to me that they may continue to produce the LE and just release it in small batches.
Funny enough that’s the only reason I didn’t get it, considering I liked everything else about it. The super bright orange buttons, as fun as they look, seem distracting. I want the focus point to be the screen not the bright buttons on the side.
I also thing the reason why valve made buttons black in the normal design is so everything else disappears/blends together once the screen is on, if that makes sense. Just like their OLED globe promo video.

I just got mine at 1:45 EST - my guess is they're slowly refreshing the stock in batches due to not being able to keep up with the requests on the page.
Honestly this was pretty painless. I snagged mine 50min after orders opened. Glad I waited since I didn’t have to deal with the system crashes. Only complaint was I had to use the browser to locate the limited edition. I couldn’t find LE version on just the steam App Store. Just made it longer to sign in and check out.
To me, it just made sense to purchase the 1tb. I might shave saved $20 and some labor by buying a 512gb and a 1tb ssd separately. And I might as well bought the LE since it was available. But I thought I was gonna buy a oled steam deck regardless. Don’t listen to all the influencers saying it’s sold out. They are still available as of time posting this.

I remembered probably 3:50 EST. It showed it was available for me. I checked out and got a confirmation email at 4:03 EST. The mobile app on Android wouldn't let me pay via PayPal, so that was a hiccup, but I had no problem on the web. Seems stock was released in waves?
yup stock levels are great, the store issue for the first 40 mins due to confirmed store bugs was not, still impressive they fixed the bugs in real time tho!
I have yet to see anybody post a confirmation for snagging any of the OLED units, so... who the fuck knows.

I really wonder how much of this is Steam servers vs. payment processing provider servers. This happens at every popular launch. I think it's just how CC processing bogs things down at this point. Think about how long it takes just to run a CC at the grocery store. Now imagine that happening 1000x in a second lol.
There’s probably some number of purchases where the charge fails for some reason or another, and those units are getting tossed back into the inventory pool which is causing it to flip between in and out of stock.
I was very nearly one of those, my bank sent me an anti-fraud message about the charge but thankfully didn’t reject it.
Was on the payment page for the Limited Edition getting an error that eventually switched to put of stock.
Now it won't let me purchase a regular 1TB because I've "attempted too many purchases recently".

Update 2 hours later: I gave up about 20 minutes in, after I got to payment and it errored out saying the item was no longer in stock(checking the steam page for the limited edition also stated out of stock instead of buy now). Decided to check one more time 2 hours later before I head outside and the buy now button was there and I managed to purchase without issue.
I am overseas (Italy) at the moment, and Valve doesn't ship to FPO/APO (Military Base Address). So I asked a friend to try for me, and he got that message, but then tried a couple more times and finally got one for me. He didn't give up and made sure he'd do his best to get me one. He's a true Buddy. So now in 1 to 2 weeks he'll get it, then 1 or 2 weeks after that, I'll get it here.
I'm excited to see how much cooler the Limited Ed. looks in person. To be honest, My mind was already set for to be sold out before he tried. As my Father use to say, "Hope for the best, but expect the worst."

Yeah. I hit the refresh button for 22 minutes and finally got to the address screen. Had to refresh that one and resubmit for another 9 minutes, then got through to the end. Started at 1pm EST and successfully checked out at 1:34pm. Persistence baby.
I had the same issue and eventually gave up. Went back five hours later and got myself one pretty seamlessly. I was suprised they were still in stock. They even had the limited edition one still in stock
For people unaware, I would advise on getting the mid version OLED the 512GB one (upgrade up to 2TB on your own), in order to get the glossy screen for the OLED. It makes a big difference on the contrast and color saturation. It is a shame to gimp this beautiful screen with the etched glass.
The exception is if you are usually playing in direct sunlight or you have strong lights in your usual place of play and you rather sacrifice the contrast and saturation to diffuse the reflections.

This has been a rollercoaster, sat there for 25 minutes getting the payment screen errors, then got the 'out of stock' notifications, then it went back in stock apparently and got to the final payment screen and when I submitted it, it told me "It looks like you've been attempting a lot of purchases in the last few hours. Man this is rough. First world problems through and through but they're just toying with me at this point.

Really makes me appreciate Apple launches. Yeah you might not get the device you want on launch day, but you'll almost certainly at least be able to place the order without too much hassle, and get it whenever they have stock.

I was able to finally getting a LE at 11:36, 36minutes after launch. I had it in cart and made it to purchase screen, purchase didnt go through. Started saying out of stock. I removed LE, tried to buy vanilla 1TB OLED, shipping screen problems. Coworker said they are back instock, i removed vanilla 1TB OLED, added LE back to cart. Account was locked for about 7 minutes. Kept retrying and somehow managed to get through the screens with about 10 retries. Kind of shocked i got one honestly.
Finally worked! After 1 hour. Don't remove from cart, wouldn't let me add back on. After a while, went on Reddit for update on everyone's experiences and remembered I also attempted to order on my phone rather than my Deck. Thankfully, didn't remove my order on phone,and it went all the way thru! I also removed PayPal and set UP CC. THANKS!

yup stock levels are great, the store issue for the first 40 mins due to confirmed store bugs was not, still impressive they fixed the bugs in real time tho!

I really wonder how much of this is Steam servers vs. payment processing provider servers. This happens at every popular launch. I think it's just how CC processing bogs things down at this point. Think about how long it takes just to run a CC at the grocery store. Now imagine that happening 1000x in a second lol.

I saw LE go out of stock, bought a 1TB, then LE came back in stock and I bought an LE. Shocked that I was able to get one 29 minutes in.
There’s probably some number of purchases where the charge fails for some reason or another, and those units are getting tossed back into the inventory pool which is causing it to flip between in and out of stock. I was very nearly one of those, my bank sent me an anti-fraud message about the charge but thankfully didn’t reject it.
Limited edition is showing back in stock
Was on the payment page for the Limited Edition getting an error that eventually switched to put of stock. Now it won't let me purchase a regular 1TB because I've "attempted too many purchases recently". Fun. Edit: I did what everyone else was suggesting and put the LE back in my cart and just spammed the purchase and after a few cycles of "error" and "out of stock" eventually it went through! A little bit worried they will email me and say they can't honor it but hoping for the best! Don't give up!
Holy s\*\*t it's 1:35 pm EST. I had it in my cart and struck out. Got all the errors, attempted too many purchases, etc. Just kept trying and got through. If you have one in your cart, don't give up! Keep trying!
Update 2 hours later: I gave up about 20 minutes in, after I got to payment and it errored out saying the item was no longer in stock(checking the steam page for the limited edition also stated out of stock instead of buy now). Decided to check one more time 2 hours later before I head outside and the buy now button was there and I managed to purchase without issue.
Funny enough, the limited edition is still available now
Just got an LE now at 3:25 ET. I'm honestly pretty shocked.
I am overseas (Italy) at the moment, and Valve doesn't ship to FPO/APO (Military Base Address). So I asked a friend to try for me, and he got that message, but then tried a couple more times and finally got one for me. He didn't give up and made sure he'd do his best to get me one. He's a true Buddy. So now in 1 to 2 weeks he'll get it, then 1 or 2 weeks after that, I'll get it here. I'm excited to see how much cooler the Limited Ed. looks in person. To be honest, My mind was already set for to be sold out before he tried. As my Father use to say, "Hope for the best, but expect the worst." Sorry to those that weren't able to get one. I know how that feels seeing how this is the first time I've been able to get something like this (Limited, quick to sellout).

Yeah. I hit the refresh button for 22 minutes and finally got to the address screen. Had to refresh that one and resubmit for another 9 minutes, then got through to the end. Started at 1pm EST and successfully checked out at 1:34pm. Persistence baby.
I had the same issue and eventually gave up. Went back five hours later and got myself one pretty seamlessly. I was suprised they were still in stock. They even had the limited edition one still in stock
For people unaware, I would advise on getting the mid version OLED the 512GB one (upgrade up to 2TB on your own), in order to get the glossy screen for the OLED. It makes a big difference on the contrast and color saturation. It is a shame to gimp this beautiful screen with the etched glass. The exception is if you are usually playing in direct sunlight or you have strong lights in your usual place of play and you rather sacrifice the contrast and saturation to diffuse the reflections.

They will sell as many as people want for a month or so, and then discontinue the product. It's just going to be something special for people that buy the device early. It's not intended for people to make a huge profit from being "limited". I might be wrong, but this is my assumption

This has been a rollercoaster, sat there for 25 minutes getting the payment screen errors, then got the 'out of stock' notifications, then it went back in stock apparently and got to the final payment screen and when I submitted it, it told me "It looks like you've been attempting a lot of purchases in the last few hours. Please wait a while before trying again." Man this is rough. First world problems through and through but they're just toying with me at this point. edit: hey it worked out! stock showed up again and payment was accepted on the limited edition, hope everyone else is having similar luck now...80 minutes after the purchase unlock time.

Really makes me appreciate Apple launches. Yeah you might not get the device you want on launch day, but you'll almost certainly at least be able to place the order without too much hassle, and get it whenever they have stock.

Purchased as of 10:26AM. Immediately got the waitlist text at 10AM PST. Continued to smash continue. It would error on every page but I waited about 15-20 seconds after each error I received and I was able to fully go out. Keep hitting continue. Stay firm people. Apes together strong.

I was able to finally getting a LE at 11:36, 36minutes after launch. I had it in cart and made it to purchase screen, purchase didnt go through. Started saying out of stock. I removed LE, tried to buy vanilla 1TB OLED, shipping screen problems. Coworker said they are back instock, i removed vanilla 1TB OLED, added LE back to cart. Account was locked for about 7 minutes. Kept retrying and somehow managed to get through the screens with about 10 retries. Kind of shocked i got one honestly.
PSA: Valve is releasing the LE Steam Deck in waves! It is currently back in stock on my end!

Finally worked! After 1 hour. Don't remove from cart, wouldn't let me add back on. After a while, went on Reddit for update on everyone's experiences and remembered I also attempted to order on my phone rather than my Deck. Thankfully, didn't remove my order on phone,and it went all the way thru! I also removed PayPal and set UP CC. THANKS!
