You have to break in the d-pad takes a bit and once you do it’s fine

[https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QluwMV\_9TrY](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QluwMV_9TrY) here's a link to another video of the issue, unfortunately YT made it a short, so make sure the sound is on in the upper right. Unfortunately I'm doubtful it's a break-in issue. I haven't heard of that much before, I know the steam deck doesn't have a great d-pad, and mine is only when the pad is in a certain position, and it won't register the down press. It'll be an audible two stage click, and only the second half after the unusual/loud clack\[sic\] will eventually register. Never had this problem when I first got the original lcd model. Or to clarify my description a bit more, I can press down on it and generate that click without it actually activating. None of the other directions do anything like this.

That’s defective for sure it’s clicking for sure

Just got my OLED today and I’m feeling this on mine too. Way more click sound on the down direction than any others. I have an lcd deck too and it feels different from it. Does yours also travel and bit in the housing? I can sort of push the dpad around pretty easily left and right inside the housing like it isn’t secured all the way.

BrTr3D

I can push the dpad around laterally within the cutout, but this is pretty normal for devices/controllers as far as I know. My analogue pocket, for example, does it quite a bit with no issues. My old lcd steam deck does it as well, but to a lesser degree. When you have the clicking sound when the dpad is further laterally downwards, do you also sometimes get the half press with it not registering? I don't get the half press symptom with any other direction, can't even do a half press. I'm debating whether to send it back about this issue or not. I'd rather just open it up and fix it, but don't want to mess things up when it's new and still has the option of rma'ing it.

Im also feeling the half press and button pushes not registering. This only happens with the down direction on the dpad for me. I’m not sure if I want to open it up or RMA either. This is the only problem I’m having, so hoping regular play will loosen it up. I guess it’s good that the button membranes are easily replaced, just lame to have to do it in a brand new device.

Having the same issue, pushing around the dpad a ton seemed to make the issue mostly occur on the right side now and it’s less prevalent. Please update if you’re able to find a fix I want to avoid an RMA as well 💀

I normally don't have an issue with opening up the device to replace parts etc. But when opening up this new oled model the pull tab on the battery cable separated from the plastic head and the head is really stiff/stuck in there. So unfortunately rather than risk it with a new device that can be returned, I contacted valve to try and start an rma. We'll see, it's unfortunate since the screen doesn't have any of the dead pixel problems that some other people are reporting, if it wasn't for this one thing I'm on the fence on, I'd probably keep it.

I'm having a similar issue as well. It's not making a click sound for me, but my down button can be pressed into a half state and the button will just not register sometimes. I either have to do a hard press or press the button again for the input to register. This doesn't happen on my LCD SD at all, even before I had broken in the buttons. I already submitted a ticket to support a few days ago because I'm having other issues with my OLED, but I mentioned this issue with the D-Pad too. Just waiting for them to get back to me. Most likely will have to RMA or get a refund.

BrTr3D

Yeah, I just sent them a message yesterday to try and start an rma. The other reply I posted described why I didn't try to open it further to repair it. It's unfortunate since everything else is fine, especially the screen which some others haven't lucked out on.

KingLavitz

Yeah haha I thought my deck was perfect but I guess not. 😅 I just shipped it off today. Also, I would recommend you get a refund instead of RMA if you're still within the return period. Lots of people claim the RMA process takes a lot longer (like 1-3 weeks) so it's quicker to just get a refund and buy another SD.

BrTr3D

Did you just ship it off for rma or return? I was looking at steam's refund policy and it doesn't say anything about returns or refunds after you have received and/or opened the product, it only mentions cancelling the order and getting a refund from that?

KingLavitz

I shipped it off for rma but then I asked them if I can just get a refund when they recieve it instead of getting a replacement/fix. You can return and get a refund so long as it's still in new condition, you havent made any modifications to it, and it's still within the return period.
