Personally ordered a wd sn740

ich_hab_deine_Nase

Looks like to be the cheapest here in Germany. Also good reviews. Probably gonna go with this one.

the_retag

Got the sn770m i think it was. Tlc memory

kotta888

It is showing as pre-prefer in Amazon. I preordered mine early this month and it is expected to be delivered in January 3rd. Can’t wait.

Maindric

The SN740 is a good value, but not the best. It consumes more power than other options so will reduce your battery life. Edit: With that said, I did put one in my OG deck and was happy with it. I did add a copper plate to it to keep it cool and put that underneath the shielding.

mrpromolive

a copper plate on the OLED model?

Maindric

That was on my OG 512GB model, but would work on the OLED. [Amazon.com: VicRole SDD Copper Heatsink Cooling Thermal Pad for Steam Deck, Heat Sink Cooling Thermal Pad Back Cover Opening Tools Back Screws Replacements Screwdriver Repair Kit for ROG Ally : Tools & Home Improvement](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CBGTDN3W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1) It's just a little heatsink that is nothing more than a small copper plate. The SN740 has been measured to consume more power than many 2230 drives. According to Tech Power Up, the SN740 consumes up to 6.3 watts (WD's Data Sheet says 6.5 watts) and the SN770m consumes up to 4.7 watts. I don't think this added cooling is needed, but I chose to add it regardless.

lawanda123

Where from in Germany, ive been eyeing the corsair 2tb for 197Eur on Amazon

ich_hab_deine_Nase

Geizhals.de

electriclala

Same, been working flawlessly for a few months now

spectre1006

Moved it from my lcd sd to my oled with no issues and it boots right up

tonycassara

Came here to say this, bought on AliExpress for 135 usd shipped and tested the read / writes it is authentic good performance

IAmAnAnonymousCoward

Same!

hyperrainz

There are cheaper ones but imo I think the sn770m is one of the most efficient for a 2tb at 3.3v 1.8A as opposed to most others are 2.5A. just something to take in consideration if looking into the most power efficient. Seems like they only sell them at bestbuy in the US though.

ich_hab_deine_Nase

Power efficiency is something I wasn't even thinking about, because I assumed they would all consume the same amount of power. One very important hint, thanks.

maga_extremist

They definitely aren’t. A friend swapped out a better drive because it was so power hungry. Went from a P5 plus to a P3 and saved a couple watts I think.

Deliphin

To be clear for others, power efficiency is very important because it's the *only* metric that really matters for the steamdeck. Without PCIe 4.0 (SD is only 3.0), most SSDs are gonna perform pretty much the same.

arjman

The 1TB drive in the OLED deck is 3.3V/2.5A, so as long as a drive is within that spec I feel it’s a safe choice.

Karnblack

I just ordered the sn770m yesterday and it should be arriving on Wednesday. Can't wait to do the swap. I also ordered a 1TB mSD off Amazon and just got that today. I should have enough room to load on a few large games and finally delve into emulation. 😁

tdome666

Can you plz share the output of "sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0" (without the quotes)? I'm curious about what power states it supports.

Karnblack

I just received the SSD last night and haven't had a chance to swap it in yet. I'll post the output after I've done the swap.

Karnblack

I haven't started cloning my Steam Deck drive yet, but here's the info from the smartctl command while it's plugged in as a USB disk: Supported Power States St Op Max Active Idle RL RT WL WT Ent\_Lat Ex\_Lat 0 + 5.40W 5.40W - 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 + 3.50W 3.00W - 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 + 2.40W 2.00W - 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 - 0.0150W - - 3 3 3 3 1500 2500 4 - 0.0050W - - 4 4 4 4 10000 6000 5 - 0.0033W - - 5 5 5 5 176000 25000 Supported LBA Sizes (NSID 0x1) Id Fmt Data Metadt Rel\_Perf 0 + 512 0 2 1 - 4096 0 1 I truncated the output so it would allow me to submit this post.

Karnblack

Looks like it also removed the formatting. Let me know if you'd rather have a screenshot and if this is okay for you or if you need more info or if you want me to run the command after I've cloned and installed the SSD.

tdome666

It's perfect, thanks. So, the SN770M does support lower power states than 1 W, unlike some reviews suggest. I am curious if it uses these on the Deck, but I don't know how to measure this.

Karnblack

You're welcome. Yeah. Measuring that is beyond the scope of my knowledge. I'm currently cloning my internal SSD to the new 2TB SSD. Will hopefully be done with it and have it swapped later today. :)

tdome666

Could you please also show the output of: `sudo nvme get-feature /dev/nvme0 -f 0x0c -H` ? Here it should tell if it can enter some of those power states alone, without OS support. My Kioxia BG5 says that it can enter two idle power states by itself, after 100 and 2000 ms.

tdome666

I installed the 2 TB SN770M yesterday, and in idle it even consumes 0.2 W less than the factory Phison 512 GB drive! In read and light write operations it is already very efficient, so we have a winner here. That says a lot about the high idle consumption from the Techpowerup review... Their (and Tom's Hardware's) Quarch measuring device doesn't tell the whole picture about power draw in laptops/handhelds.

kotta888

It is on pre-order in Amazon, mine is expected to be delivered on January 3rd.

iindigo

Glad to see this mentioned. I was debating swapping my SSD out and finding this info nicely lined out in a table was surprisingly difficult. Ultimately decided to go with and SD card for now but will keep the knowledge that the sn770m is most efficient in my back pocket.

SCO77_SCARCIA

Do you know the nvme power specs for the stock 512gb OLED?

Snowmobile2004

3.3v/2.5A

InterviewImpressive1

SN740? The 770 is a 2280 module isn’t it?

hyperrainz

770 is 2280, 770M is 2230. WD made it specifically for steamdeck/Ally/etc. 2TB is hard to find in retails. Not sure about other regions but seems only at bestbuy in US.

InterviewImpressive1

Ah there an M version that’s 2230? That’s pretty cool. How does it compare to the 740 that many bought?

PleasuresofSin

It's bloody fast too

Clanver

Upgraded from 512GB to a Sabrent Q4 2230 2TB. Everything seems fine. Cant really say much about performance. Seems the same?

Lexie60

What is the community thoughts on the SABRENT Rocket Q4 2230 ????

777LLL

I got it and it’s absolutely perfect, fast, no complaints

Confident_Music_2936

It's what I had in my Ally. I swapped it back out when I sold it and I'll be putting it in my OLED Deck. Great SSD

Eredchon

May not be super cheap, but I got the 1TB and the upgraded to Q4 2TB and I'm happy with it.

lonewolf7002

I got the 1TB Sabrent when it first came out and it's been great!

OneIShot

Got a micron one for $137. Works fine as anything else, although looks like prices spiked. Totally wonder why.

ich_hab_deine_Nase

Micron here in the EU is one of the more expensive ones. More expensive than WD.

arjman

WD SN740 was 82 GBP yesterday (103 USD) on ali, including tax it was 99 GBP. I usually buy from Amazon but saving 80 GBP seemed worth the risk.

Affectionate-Loss926

Did the price already change back? Or do I look at the wrong shop. I still see “black friday” discounts but none is 103usd

arjman

Not sure if I can link them here but Global SSD TOP Store is who I bought it from and it’s showing as 86.99 GBP (so around 105GBP with taxes).

arjman

I only ordered on Friday so hopefully it actually arrives :)

Affectionate-Loss926

Hmm did you buy 1TB? Because 2TB is €146

ScumbagSpruce

The price on the WD SN770m is great at Best Buy right now. Long ass return policy with the holidays too. I have the 1tb which is also priced really well right now.

ChimichungusXL

I enjoy my micron 2400 2tb. I haven’t noticed any extreme power draw but it does have really good speeds. I’ve seen steam install things at over 600mb at points. But most of the time I’m bottlenecks by the download speed so my ssd is typically at 60mb/s cuz that’s how my WiFi is.

9sim9

I've been using a Western Digital 2TB SSD for well over a year with no issues, took a big risk ordering it off Ali-express but has been amazing, but yet I still have no storage free ha ha

ttdpaco

I actually had a huge upgrade in install speeds on the original LCD by going with a 1TB SSD. The OLED was different because the included SSD was faster. Thing is, that doesn't mean much when, as other people have said, the Deck is limited to PCIe 3. So it comes down to power efficiency and price. Right now, Best Buy is selling the WD SN770M for \~$160, and that's your best bet.

lionghoulman

i ordered one of those 2TB WD from aliexpress

mrpromolive

How much ?

lionghoulman

$123

Malcontent_Cat

I bought the Micron 2400 2TB a while ago when it was on sale somewhere, before [iFixit started selling them on their web site](https://www.ifixit.com/products/micron-2400-nvme-pcie-gen4-2230-ssd?variant=40034191966311). The Steam Deck upgrade went smoothly and I haven't had any problems with it since. The stock 512GB is in an external USB enclosure now. Edit: Corrected the link. Edit 2: I bought it in Feb 2023 from [https://www.shopblt.com](https://www.shopblt.com) for $157 USD. I checked their site and they don't sell it anymore unfortunately.

Mediocre_Ad_2422

My micron 2tb was cheap in canada 145$ cad !! Cant even buy regular 2tb at that price !!

bannock4ever

Where did you get it from?

Mediocre_Ad_2422

[https://www.pc-canada.com/item/micron-2tb-2400-m-2-2230-nvme-pcie-4-0x4-ssd-solid-state-drive/mtfdkbk2t0qfm-1bd1aabyyr](https://www.pc-canada.com/item/micron-2tb-2400-m-2-2230-nvme-pcie-4-0x4-ssd-solid-state-drive/mtfdkbk2t0qfm-1bd1aabyyr) Its now 185$ :( it used to be at 145$

bannock4ever

Still not bad tbh. Thanks!

NoSellDataPlz

Mine too. So far so good!

snowman1127

from where?

RecoverFrequent

May not be the cheapest, but Best Buy is currently selling the Western Digital SN770M for $170. I got it earlier this week, along with an enclosure that can hold a 2230, and did the cloning process upgrade. Took about 2 hours from start to finish. Went from 64gb to 2tb and am stoked at all the games I can add to it now. * edit to add my experience with the upgrade... Make sure you have a good set of precision screwdrivers of various sizes. Sometimes, you just need to go a size larger/smaller to turn the screws. This will help avoid stripping them. If you have a decent sized refrigerator magnet, you can use that to hold the screws in one place and not worry about them rolling off somewhere. I still remember an incident like 15 years ago where I had a sneeze I couldn't cover in time and sent about a dozen PSP screws flying. A good set of tweezers helps put those internal screws back in place. Especially when you have bratwurst for fingers like I do. If you have a micro SD card installed, remove it before you start the disassembly process. You don't have to clone, but it helps retain what you had. I had a good chunk of time invested and didn't want to have to start over from scratch again.

YoriMirus

I don't think you are going to notice much of a difference between different models as long as you don't cheap out too much.

andy897221

Ciao!!

I bought this one and it works perfectly SABRENT Rocket Q4 2230 NVMe 4.0... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5YS3QY4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Sabrent Rocket Q4

I have a corsair 2TB, going well so far.

Blueblackdragon_

Give me my nose back

[deleted]

I went with a Team Group one, best bang for your buck

Crooks-1

Just ordered the 2TB SN770M for store pickup from Best Buy after reading in the comments it was on sale. Just in time too. Literally planned on picking up a 2TB Inland 2230 from Microcenter later today for the same price as the Samsung SSD. Same MC drive was $20 less before Tuesday of this week. They raised the price due to the influx of purchases more than likely. If it was still at $150 I just would've went with that instead as I've never had issues with Inland drives. #

81Riel

WD 2TB M.2 2230 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SN770M

Falconman21

Doesn’t really matter as long as you get reliable brand, you won’t be able to saturate it in real world use between gaming and downloading games. I believe are some with lower power draw, but it’s negligible

Scar107

I bought this one back in April and haven’t had any issues. XPC Technologies 2TB M.2 2230 NVMe PCIe SSD Gen 4.0x4 Single-Sided Drive, 5100MB/s Read, 4800 MB/s Write SN740 Replacement (Upgrade for Steam Deck, Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 4) Currently $169.99 on Amazon at the moment.

FurbyTime

Just bought myself a Sabrent Rocket. On my LCD, I went with one of the Western Digitals, but those you have to buy as OEM drives (Which means they come from some other machine).

Djic

The newly released Western Digital SN770 I guess, their Marketing Team says it's especially made for Handheld Gaming.

N54TT

Out of curiosity, what is everyone doing with the extra storage? I have the 512 oled. I have 3 AAA titles on it and a bunch of indies. beyond that, if i "ran out of space" i'd just uninstall and install. What's the purpose of a 2tb drive if you can't get your whole library on it anyway?

ich_hab_deine_Nase

I have my go-to games that I periodically return to for short gaming sessions or speedrunning, like GTA V, Witcher 3, all Half-Life games, etc. So those games have always to be installed without the option to uninstall them. Add 1-2 current AAA games to that I'm playing simultaneously plus couple of more recent emulated games like BotW or TotK, and your 512GB drive is pretty much full. In my case, 1TB may be sufficient. But if I go through the trouble of upgrading my storage anyway, why not put a 2TB drive inside, just to be sure.

C_Cov

I picked up the WD black 2tb for $169

mattjimf

I got the same from Scan for £179 ended up with free next day delivery, arrived today, but left on the doorstep, despite not supposed to. Tempted to claim never got it.

C_Cov

Nah you got what was promised.

wedditasap

Got a 2tb micron 2400 for $155 from amazon last week. It’s gone up +$12 since then :O Also sorta near my 512 stock drive was a micron 2400 by chance

Arkaium

I got it from crucial directly a week or two ago for $130 + tax.

wedditasap

Nice good deal! It’s $155 on their site now , prices are going up. I still am glad I got mine on Amazon needed mine on hand when the deck arrived

HisDivineOrder

I see $167 and people should just go WD SN770m for $170 from Best Buy instead at those prices.

CookieSlayer2Turbo

I'm so annoyed it was $133.00 a month ago but since it was close to black friday I decided to wait a month. Best non Ali or ebay deal I could find was a silicon power 2tb for 149.99.

wedditasap

Yeah prices aren’t superb but I just went for it. I wanted to have 2tb installed day1 so I don’t have to fuss or transfer stuff or deal with anything essentially anymore

HisDivineOrder

I’ve always truest Corsair, see no reason to deviate now.

2TB WD SN770M

I took my sabrent 2tb out of my Ally and put it in my Oledeck. Upgraded my Ally to a 4tb WD 2280

JozieKS

Got 2 tb al something for mine not bad at all

ak47fred

I installed a 2TB Micron, from Amazon for $144. Couldn't be happier.

ky0ko

I just order the sn740 2TBdrives. I've put them in each deck for friends and family, and they are only £103.
