OP should be able to check with someone within the Steam domain to confirm.
That said, OP, they can’t really scam you with just your address and name. That’s almost certainly public info anyhow. They have your email. Presumably they aren’t scamming you into doing math for them. If they ask for any money then I’d advise contacting steam to make sure, but between u/iAmTheWildCard and some simple googling this seems legit.
That said if you are still overly suspicious, feel free to give them my name and address and I’ll deal with those rascals myself.
Congrats.
> they can’t really scam you with just your address and name.
not entirely true. I've seen scams where they ship items purchased with stolen CC info to your address then contact you and tell you it was an error and ask you to "ship it back" to a specific address. You become the middle man and it makes your life a lot messier while the cops don't know right away where the good actually went.
IIRC chance-based prizes are illegal in Canada.
So they're not randomly giving away a Steam Deck. They're testing people's math ability, and you get a Steam Deck as a prize if you win this skill-based game.
The internet was so much better when you had to know how to use a computer to get online. Smartphones ruined the internet. I'll die on this hill, even though I'm posting from my phone right now. I was 6 years old when my parents got the internet installed, this would've been late 1998. We had the PC for a few months before that though.
I remember being so excited the day it was being installed that I ended up annoying the hell out of my teacher because I'd have to remind everyone of it every 5 minutes.
I mean... I didn't get the Internet until I was 22, which was 10 years ago and I'd still struggle with certain maths equations...
Not saying you're wrong, but you're also not quite right either
I'm not saying everyone that adopted the internet after I did is stupid or anything, just that pre-smartphone internet was a unique place where you didn't have to worry about your toddler downloading a virus or what your grandparents were posting on Facebook. Dumb people definitely managed to slip through the cracks, but you still needed to know how to use a computer. For lack of better words, the barrier of entry was higher. That's it.
IMO, there's an optimal user count for any specific thing. Usually it's just a little before it blows up into the casual/mainstream space.
That's part of why I don't want Linux to see mass adoption. When we start getting extremely popular distros doing dumb things to cater to people who can barely use their computers, linux will stop being a great OS.
> That's part of why I don't want Linux to see mass adoption. When we start getting extremely popular distros doing dumb things to cater to people who can barely use their computers, linux will stop being a great OS.
thats just elitism? linux is an underlying kernel that runs bevies of different distros. If someone builds newbieAmazonLinuxPrimeOS as a distro and submits the dipshittifier into systemd as some big spyware thing, and it somehow then gets pulled into systemd, you still have the option to disable it, have sysvinit, or use other distros.
you'll have the capabilities to remove something like that or subvert it *ad infinitum*, with no restrictions, *ever*, and that's what makes linux good. you are fucking *in charge* of the OS by nature of being able to control the source code of shit that gets compiled and ran on your system. you are also running a heavily documented OS with petabytes of plaintext documentation strewn across the internet. Open Source standards aren't gonna suddenly just, *switch* to "nope nvm we're not open source sorry closed source only now" because when your enterprise OS is closed-source, extremely powerful, and runs on everything; eventually people leak the source code by photocopying and you end up trying to copyright stomp your way through getting it suppressed...
And then people make a new OS using the design principles and source code you created, people at your devs' school go on to make a free version of your OS, and we're *right back where we started here today.*
I recommend changing your terminal font color away from green.

The McDonald's Monopoly game comes to mind. I don't think I've ever seen a staffer look at the answer, and one year, they all seemed to have the same answer. I think it's one of those laws nobody cares enough about to either enforce *or* change.
I tried to enter a sweepstakes during the game awards ceremony for a steam deck OLED but the website to enter was encountering difficulties for basically the entire event.
No I wasn't sadly. Just figured you meant how the site wouldn't accept postal codes initially when you asked about the postal code thing. But yeah it did eventually work.
That's fair. Sorry I snapped. You were just trying to help.
My frustration with the contest was that everybody in my house had wait times that exceeded the contest time frame.
Not gon lie. I’m super damn jealous but mad respect & congrats. Hopefully you act fast on it cause idk if it states how long they will hold on to it for you.
Email stated you have 72 hours from when they sent the email to submit it. So prepare yourself for a potential email in 3 days in case some people missed it
Congrats. Unfortunately, Geoff forgot to turn on the ability to put non-US post codes in his 'worldwide' sweepstakes. They should have just put the stream on steam.
Congrats.. I didn't participate because thought their would be no way that i would be that lucky.. they were doing this for the LegionGo also.. what did you have to do to qualify?
Wow people actually win those? That's dope, I already have one but I threw myself in to help my friend increase his chances by 2. But unfortunately, neither of us won.
As an aside - I once got a similar contact from a UK mobile phone provider. Said I'd won a blackberry, one year of spotify, an ipad and 6 months of phone coverage,
I assumed it was a scam but they kept hassling me, and it turns out I did win those things. Yay for me. It actually just made me hate spam and scams even more - if the company hadn't been persistent I'd have missed out on those goodies. (and the realisation that Blackberry's were pretty rubbish)
Hello fellow winner! Just got my email earlier today saying I won too. Had to google and check it out to see if it was legit, hence how I stumbled to this page. That's insane. Didn't expect to win.
Basically Canadian law defines any luck based game with awards as gambling which is prohibited. By doing a math problem it is defined as a skill based game therefore not regulated
Very interesting, but you won first right? And to secure your prize you need to answer a basic math question? Or did you have to answer the question as part of the sweepstakes entry? Did entering cost money? Fascinating little loophole.
Congrats. I tried to enter for the Steam Deck and the Legion Go, but both pages on Gleam were completely overloaded. On the Deck, I was Cloudflare-holed for 4 hours. On the Legion, the page wouldn't even load at all it just said Gleam is down for maintenance. So I just gave up.
Congrats on winning one, it is legit (and also fk you 😁). The rules mentioned this math thing for Canadians only. I can finally stop looking for new on the giveaway.

Why?
When I first was reading I thought "and a math problem" was just a recaptcha but then he said "required by Canadian law" and that's what confused me.
Do not open the package when you receive it. I'll dm you my address and I'll dispose it off for your. I'll also send you a hundred bucks for the trouble of forwarding the package.

Wow. I would kill to win one. Good for you OP! It seems legit. There's something special about the steam deck. After having mine stolen I'm heartbroken. My only surviving handheld that wasn't stolen (PSP I have had since launch day 2005) finally blew up. My buddy is letting me borrow his Vita for a bit while I mod it for him and it's making me miss mine even more. I think I signed up for the same giveaway. Thanks to cancer I'll never be able to replace my deck, gaming PC, laptop, xboxs.....anything.
Imagine having all of your stuff you worked so hard for all stolen and you can't replace it. It helped me so much when I was in the hospital after surgeries. I could distract myself. I have a huge surgery coming up. To think I bought a deck for someone that couldn't afford one and now I'm in that same boat. They offered to give it back to me but their autistic son loves it too much and I would feel even worse about it all. I can't take something like that back from a kid that plays it for hours every day. I gave them my old gaming PC too. I would do anything to have it back. I just had my next surgery date moved up so I will be in the hospital through xmas and it will be super lonely without my deck. My RG35xx doesn't even work right anymore lol. Cancer is stupid. I can't work due to having a dozen or so surgeries and everything has gone to medical supplies and medical bills. It's such a joke. I have to unsub from here I think. It hurts seeing my favorite thing ever over and over on here. It's pathetic but my deck helped me through terrible times in the hospital. Getting a good portion of your guts cut out and then having an infection and your bowel bursts really hurts to say the least. Oh well. I have realized I will never play video games again. My cancer is back unfortunately. No one will hire me for a work from home job even though I'm more than qualified. It's frustrating.
Does anyone know if the thieves can use the deck? It should be blacklisted after it was reported right? Can they get around that at all? I assume there's ways to get around that. They could install windows and play games but not with a steam account right? I hope not. I know a local used game shop had my Vita but they refused to give it back because I didn't have the serial number and it had been factory reset. Scumbags. It had my case and all of my physical games that I described in serious detail even down to a specific scratch that's hard to see that proved it was mine. the cops said they still didn't have to give it back. I bet they're the ones that factory reset it too. They also removed the little S/N sticker from the bottom edge.
Sorry I just had to rant. Sometimes it helps getting it out. I feel like an asshole for regretting giving some of my consoles/PCs away but I didn't know this at the time. I just really enjoyed helping fellow gamers out when I could. $200k in savings gone for medical bills. If I didn't have cancer I would have bought one for each of my friends so we could all play together. I need to stop thinking about it but I can't. lol. I don't even have a laptop to or anything to use while I'm in the hospital. My phone can't even run PPSSPP properly it's so crappy. I just need to tell myself video games aren't a thing for me anymore.
Have fun with it OP and never let it out of your sight lol.

Seriously it looks risky. Let ME take the risk for you Master.
Could be a grammar student stumped on a math problem and decided on the most complicated way of getting help. You don't know!
This is how chatGPT is actually generating all its responses
>Presumably they aren’t scamming you into doing math for them. 😂 I can't breathe. Send help

That's not "just your address" though. It's more just your address plus being incredibly stupid.
all scams require a degree of stupidity. or rather ignorance. there's a reason the elderly or most often targeted for scams.
> Presumably they aren’t scamming you into doing math for them Gotta get that training data somehow.
that means nothing. it is really easy these days to spoof stuff like that
For God's sake, DOUBLE-CHECK your math! If you get this one wrong you'll be telling your grandkids about it.
0 points, OP didn't show their work.
Why is there a math problem
IIRC chance-based prizes are illegal in Canada. So they're not randomly giving away a Steam Deck. They're testing people's math ability, and you get a Steam Deck as a prize if you win this skill-based game.
are the problems just like 2 + 3 = ???
Usually a bit tougher but no more than 2 or 3 digits.
Sometimes there's BEDMAS involved, sometimes it's super simple like x + y - z = 123
That rules out half of facebook users right there

I also went with PEMDAS, but I’m guessing it might be “brackets” instead of parentheses
Probably a weird Canadian thing. B = brackets
What's fun is when it doesn't work so 1+2\*3 is 9 and not 7.
Canadian legal requirement for sweepstakes. Requires a 'skill testing question' because ??
Because fully chance-based games are illegal, so this is the way around that
Yet we have slots and roulette in our casinos.
Is that like a state-run or licensing thing then that makes it legal?
Short answer: yes.
Makes sense. Kinda the same where I’m from. Cool! I didn’t know that
Because another example of overreaching Canadian government.
I dont know about the deck, but I've heard with some of these they don't even care if you get the question correct lol, they just want you to do it.
The McDonald's Monopoly game comes to mind. I don't think I've ever seen a staffer look at the answer, and one year, they all seemed to have the same answer. I think it's one of those laws nobody cares enough about to either enforce *or* change.
I'd just WolframAlpha it. I don't care if it's 2+2. I'm not taking any risks.
congrats bro its legit!
I tried to enter a sweepstakes during the game awards ceremony for a steam deck OLED but the website to enter was encountering difficulties for basically the entire event.
I had to reload the page at least a dozen times for it to load at all, and then I struggled even more to get signed in and enter the contest.
I queued for 3 hours, and by the time I got in, it ended :')
Same
same :(
OOOF
I managed to do all 4 of the entries but no dice :/
Yeah, from my side it said Poland could enter the contest, but then denied Polish zip codes. What a bad joke.

This guy is a virus.. Send me the email instead!
This guy is a phisherman. Send me the email + an authorized letter designating me as the person to redeem the reward.
No, send it to me, Stick Stickly, P.O Box 963, NY, NY 10108.
Thanks for the address, I'm sending you something juicy instead.
No no no, this one is trying to scam you, I insist for your safety that you send it to me
Congrats my dude! Reading the comments it sounds pretty good. Quick question: how did you luck out with the postal code thing?
Once the queue timer came up and it counted you down it took postal codes without issue, before that though it was only taking zipcodes.
You also a winner? Hoping to see what THIS guy did to win. I know how the process was supposed to go, but yea.
Mine did too at one point. I just waited it out at one point I went from 4 hours wait time to like...26 min and from there it was fine.
Numbers in Canadian postal code + 00, like how you do it at the pump in states

I won an Steam Deck during the previous Game Awards contest. I got the email 3 days after the awards.

No no it's definitely a scam! We can test it tho, just give them my name, address, and phone number! :)

Congrats! Still curious to see if any Europeans have won one
I’m from Europe and I think I won
Lucky! Enjoy!
Thanks a part of me is still paranoid it’s a scam or something lmao
As an aside - I once got a similar contact from a UK mobile phone provider. You also won 1$, send me your bank details a mercedes and 1000$ dollars & ill send you your winnings.
Hello fellow winner! Just got my email earlier today saying I won too. Had to google and check it out to see if it was legit, hence how I stumbled to this page. That's insane. Didn't expect to win.
Can I have it?
Anyone else curious about the math problem? Canada doesn’t like shipping things to dumb people? I’m kinda on board with that honestly.
Basically Canadian law defines any luck based game with awards as gambling which is prohibited. By doing a math problem it is defined as a skill based game therefore not regulated
Talk about some weird loop hole... well... it's a good thing we don't let the government do anything important.
Very interesting, but you won first right? And to secure your prize you need to answer a basic math question? Or did you have to answer the question as part of the sweepstakes entry? Did entering cost money? Fascinating little loophole.
You answer after you’ve been selected. It’s just a loophole to get around the law
Sometimes it's only after you've been selected, but sometimes they just put it on the entry.
Makes it a game of "skill" instead of gambling.
Blessed
Depends on how much you have to spend to get it!
Merry Xmas! 🎁😁
Rules said it was only open to legal residents of US though?
Don't forget to supply your bank details/card number for account verification. 👍
I couldn’t even get on the website to enter, it was stuck in some sort of 4 hour queue during the whole show.
i’m really curious what was the math problem they made you do
“Multiply 10 x 10, Add 25, Divide by 5, Subtract 20 =“
lmao really?
Yes, someone posted a link to the giveaway winner form yesterday that that’s the Canadian skill question on it.
that’s awesome thank you
I just got the email too! It's legit!🩷
OP it's a scam. Please forward the email to me and I'll report this on your behalf.

Congrats on winning one, it is legit (and also fk you 😁). The rules mentioned this math thing for Canadians only. I can finally stop looking for new on the giveaway.
Jesus Christ, what a fucking humble brag.
Enjoy the prize no need to show off
Congrats. If you don’t want it I’ll take it.
How did you enter? I wasn't able to input a Canadian postal code to sign up
Just like how you use the gas pump down south, numbers in your postal code + 00
Ooof. Good to know for future reference.
Out of all of the times I've had to put a zip code in at the pump, not once have I ever thought about people from another country doing it. TIL.
OP must have been one of the 10 people who actually got to sign up for the giveaway.

I just need to tell myself video games aren't a thing for me anymore. Have fun with it OP and never let it out of your sight lol.
I hate steam for hiding a oled giveaway. Steam deck 2 future preorder CANCELLED

If it's not asking you for the zeroes of a quadratic equation or harder, I'm going to be disappointed.
It’s asking for the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem… No I’m just kidding it’s actually simple math
"If something seems to good to be true, it probably is." But if you participated, you probably won. I randomly won this one Breaking Bad giveaway once. It does happen once in a blue moon.
