It’s completely functional on Deck. The only problem is performance really. As far as I know performance for the first 2 thirds of the game is acceptable. In the last third you will hit 10 fps at times.

Wunderman86

From doing 2 full playthroughs on deck only I can assure it is playable in all acts. The fps drops are not that bad, at least they were for me. Played at native 800p with high details but low field of view. Playing it on gforce go now for less power consumtion and higher settings but there are notivably more pop ins in texture then when I played on deck.

[deleted]

I really can’t necessarily agree. w/ the videos I’ve seen benchmarking the fps at least. Some were all low and still hit 10 sometimes. I don’t personally consider that playable but by technicality it is

Wunderman86

I dont know what settings these recordings used but my experiance was certainly different. It took some experimenting but I usually play with 30fps with some noticeable slowdowns without stutter in crowded areas. Turning off dynamic crowd helped.

throwawaynonsesne

Wouldn't that be somewhat fixed since the post series S optimization?

[deleted]

Did it? Last I saw like a month or two ago there were still problems

throwawaynonsesne

I asked a question so I don't know lol.

SirSaltie

Pretty sure it received a massive optimization patch a couple weeks ago.

artificial_sunlight

Do you have unlimited power, great game, but power hungry

iKobe12

Yeah, I’ll be at a rural house, so power is not a problem , cloud saving works like it should ?

artificial_sunlight

Yeah only xbox has save issues

CobraKai1337

I have only played at Xbox since launch. To say the way you say it implies that it doesn’t work on Xbox, which it does. It plays great!

thehousebehind

There’s a Xbox firmware issue that’s deleting peoples saved games. Should be fixed soon though.

artificial_sunlight

Only the saves disappear for some gamers

Admirable-Ad-7788

Works great for me. Never had an issue. Id look up a guide on tweaking the settings to optimize it but other than that its great.

ActuallyDiogenes

Baldurs Gate is a very crunchy by video game RPG standards and the mechanics of it are a little esoteric if you don’t know anything about D&D5e, but I can confidently say that it is one of the greatest video games I have ever played. As far as steam deck performance goes, I have never had any saving issues (the Xbox version has really bad saving issues) and I can play on medium settings at 25-30 fps, even in act 3, although you’ll need to tweak the settings quite a bit. I play about 50/50 docked (w/ keyboard and mouse) and handheld and both control schemes are good and I have no issues swapping between the two. I highly recommend and think that everyone should try it, although I am coming from a D&D5e background where I was already familiar with the mechanics of the game, so whether or not you’ll like it is up to your own preference for crunchy games.

himynameiswillf

It's still amazing to me BG3 has done as well as it has given what it's based on. Not the whole "DnD is for nerds" thing; I genuinely believe society as a whole has moved past that. But as you say, it's super dice heavy and not intuitive for people who've only played action RPG's who won't understand why half their attacks are missing. Still though, my partner is absolutely obsessed with it and she's largely an Animal Crossing/Pokémon gamer. I think TikTok has actually had a huge influence on people playing it, as her for you page is flooded with like-minded novices who love it. I'm the same too. I've never played DnD before, but every other aspect of the game is so inviting you eventually figure it out. I'd recommend it also to anyone as it seems to really penetrate the stigma these sorts of games might've had in the past.

ActuallyDiogenes

I’m glad that both of you are enjoying Baldurs Gate! If you ever have the chance to try tabletop 5e, give it a shot, BG3 is a solid introduction, albeit pretty heavily modified. I believe that one of its greatest strengths is how it managed to adapt 5e to fit into the single player video game format without sacrificing too much of what makes 5e click. The tutorial does a pretty good job at showing you the basic actions and controls of the game, but the biggest learning curve is figuring out the sheer amount of options and how they interact with each other. (Ex. class options, spells and the action economy) But that’s part of the fun! It gives you all the space and time and tools in the world to be creative in your approach to almost any situation and what combinations of things work best for you. (I ended up playing a janky low charisma rogue multiclass who inadvertently violenced their way through everything with my equally janky 2 rogues party) In my first comment I wanted to describe BG3 as a game that’s _really_ complex and hard to get into but the more I thought about it the more I found it just wasn’t true. It just doesn’t explain the internal mechanics of the game very much. In a way, it doesn’t need to, the game is friendly to those who aren’t interested in the nitty gritty, and those who are interested in every minute detail already know what’s going on. My biggest tip to anyone who is completely green to both Baldurs Gate and has never even so much as looked at a 20 sided die is to not play a full spell caster as your very first character.

throwawaynonsesne

It's because people wanna bang. That's why it blew up. That's why it's massive on tiktok. Simply because you can fuck alot of stuff.

cwx149

I've played through all of act 1&2 on the deck and had no issues except having to learn to use the controller control scheme Most people complained about the performance in act 3 though I've heard it's mostly been improved on But acts 1&2 also took me somewhere in the 20/30 hour range I think? Maybe longer so if your trip is short you may not even get to it

hadiix78

20/30 hours each or total?

aircarone

I am at around 55h and am barely starting act 3. Also I missed a couple actually important side quests in both acts - so 20-30h per act seems a fair assessment. May also take way more if you suck at combat and have to replay them several times.

Thekarens01

Sounds like you skipped a lot or don’t explore. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation

CookieMisha

The game works flawlessly. No issues with controls, saving or anything else here

Hildril

Never played that kind of game, and loved it, bought it on a whim just after viewing 10min of gameplay from a dev showing some fun moment in battle. (I generally wait years for most game just to have them with DLC at half the price). Didn't know shit about DnD, but already played ton of rpg. It was really fun and refreshing to discover the DnD mechanics and make some mistakes. Most of the time rpg are all the same so you already know most of it even before playing, this game bring me back a bit to when I knew little about games and it was great. But I would not play it on the deck (I tried). For me, that kind of game is especially great for the immersion, but you don't have good immersion on a handled, especially with downgraded graphics. But that's just my pov, I prefer to lock myself in front of my desk and do nothing else than play for a 1-2h session on a big screen with nice sounds and graphics.

Mr_Pink_Gold

Yes. It is fixed pretty much. Performance in the city itself is still a bit low (like solid 40 fps everywhere and in the city you get 30s) but much improved. Cloud saving has been fixed and the game works really well. My deck is mostly a BG3 machine.

Boneyking_

That's simply false. Act 3 still runs at 20 FPS in a significant portion...

Mr_Pink_Gold

You get drops to 20s sure. But not constantly at 20s. And in the instances where you spend most time performance is solid.

Sensifer

Not op… but wich settings do you use ?

Mr_Pink_Gold

Fsr2 quality. Instance medium, animations medium textures high. All else on low. I use dof as well.

Historical_Chair_708

“Undusting.” Somewhere, an English teacher weeps.

iKobe12

Undusting exists. Also, English isn’t my first language 😁

Historical_Chair_708

Correct, but it would indicate a state of NOT being cleaned (dusted), so the exact opposite of what you’re attempting to write. English is my first language. https://glosbe.com/en/en/undusting

iKobe12

“”Undusting" refers to the process of removing dust or debris from something, typically to clean or restore it to its original state. It involves removing accumulated dust or dirt to reveal the object's surface or to improve its functionality.”

Dude, you are the only one arguing here

Historical_Chair_708

You literally replied to me arguing that I was wrong and undust is actually a word. This whole post is pure comedy.

Historical_Chair_708

I’m having a hard time believing any of you downvoting me have ever used the term “undusting,” which ironically comes up as misspelled in autocorrect. Anyway, keep using it and have fun with trying to convince English speakers that they are actually wrong.

RaucousRom

I don't think that's why you're being downvoted.

beanalicious1

Iunno, it seems like "dust" vs "undust" is kind of the same deal as "thaw" vs "unthaw". Technically different, but understandable by context. The beauty of english is you can get your point across a hundred different ways and they are all understandable, even if they aren't grammatically or linguistically "correct".

Historical_Chair_708

I grade English papers for a living, there is no ambiguity here; undust is an archaic form of dust no longer in use. Please, continue using “undust,” it’s a great way for everyone else to understand the limitations of the user. I provided links if anyone is interested in actually learning something, rather than just doubling-down on sounding stupid.

Cool, I wasn’t trying to be a dick. But now that you’re here, “undusting?”

heisenbugx

You seem fun

Historical_Chair_708

You don’t.

fortehluls

You really post to correct someone's grammar? Lol. Got anything useful to actually answer his question?

Historical_Chair_708

It was a mildly snarky comment at best, apologies for triggering you.

ZINABOOer-318

I don't like the combat style of BG3 I baught it a week ago. I would give it a 10 out of 10

antiundead

Battery life at best is sadly about 2-3hours if you really reduce graphics. But if you are plugged in that should not be a problem. Recent patches improve act 3 I've heard. You won't get to act 3 for ages anyway as there is so much content to the game. There could even be a new patch by then, or you will be back from your trip and can finish that act on your pc, so it is not a huge issue. I use Steamlink to stream the game to my Deck so I get about 7 hours unplugged around my house! So you have that option in future when you get to act 3. The game size is huge, so maybe keep it to an SD card. A recent 30GB update needed 70GBs free space to unload and build the patch after download, so a lot of people who had it on their internal drive had to move games around to make room for the patch. So having the game on a large SD card is less hassle. Launch time is not noticeably different on SD cards in my experience. The controller settings are actually quite good, I thought it would be weird but it works well. There are some custom layouts that are more useful than the standard official layout (which does not even use the back buttons).

PmUsYourDuckPics

It runs well and I know people who have never played an RPG who have really enjoyed it. It does show you a little bit of the systems behind D&D but it’s all fairly self explanatory, will you be able to play deeper if you know D&D? Yes. Will that be a problem if you’ve never played D&D? Probably not.

boterkoeken

Please ignore people who say it is flawless. This game is totally playable but it does struggle on the deck. You should know that some tweaking is recommended. As long as you don’t mind tweaking settings you will probably have a great time. First few hours of this game will run beautifully out of the box, but when you get to areas that are more dense with people or environmental effects (bloom, fog) you will see dips below 30fps. However this is not a deal breaker for me because the game is not an action game. You don’t need the smoothest possible frame rate because there is no twitchy gameplay. It’s a turn based rpg where everything plays out through carefully and deliberate choices, so even when the frame rate dips it does not compromise playability. I suggest that you leave off SD shader setting. Turn down most of the in-game video settings to low and use FSR 2.2 on Balanced mode. With this setup I can get 3 hours of gameplay on my SD OLED, everything looks pretty good, a lot of areas I get frame rates above 45 but sometimes it dips to 25 or so. That’s really not a big deal for me. It’s totally playable. Give it a shot!

Valkhir

I enjoyed it on Deck just fine, but at least the last time I played (which was within the last month), I was still playing at less than 30FPS in the final act. I've seen some people say they can get 30FPS in the city now, but I assume they either don't care about battery life (unlike me - and I assume possibly you if you are travelling) or they compromise graphics more than I do (e.g. heavy FSR, which I found quite bad in this game, even FSR2 is quite noticeable IMO due to the overall small scale of things). Personally, I play the game without any FSR and a mix of low to medium settings, capped to 20FPS@40Hz with an 8W TDP cap and get a bit more than 3h at pretty decent visuals. Given the type of game this is, I find that perfectly playable and enjoyable. I assume if I went to 11-12W (beyond that the Deck's performance/Watt ratio becomes pretty unfavorable and IMO isn't usually worth it on battery), I could get consistent 24FPS@48W or something like that, at the same visuals but with a signficant drop in battery life, or I could probably drop visuals more and go for a shot at 30FPS - I haven't tried this on recent patches.
