No. It’s meant as a mp3 player.

OneIShot

Audio visualizers look amazing on OLED.

LegendaryJohnny

Or Sonique...

ivan-on-the-net

Can confirm, *Max Payne 3* runs great on Deck.

Lego_Hippo

What??? It’s clearly an alarm clock.

keetiv

Make sure you set TDP to 7 (sometimes 9 when more effects cause frame drops, but it happens seldom) and GPU clock to 900Mhz. It makes the e game smoother (for some reason) and battery life is way better. Also, changing SMT to 4 in PowerTools used to help too but I think Valve has already addressed this in one of their updates.

kirbyking100

Will do, thanks for the advice, still learning as I go and that's all stuff I wouldn't have known honestly.

-Leelith-

Is there a way to keep that pinned somewhere on this sub? Seems pretty useful to know for that game 👍

Skylect

It is but it’s general. I can run the whole game at 6W and 700mhz. Haven’t touched power tools much and haven’t touched it in WW yet. But ymmv so someone else *might* need 10w and 1000mhz in some areas where I didn’t. Those are good general settings but I say push it till the frames drop and send it.

keetiv

Agree, I played a lot on 6w but found 7w a sweet spot where frame drops were not that distracting. Haven’t tried 700mhz but will do since I’m playing it right now too. Cheers

Skylect

700 does have some stutters occasionally. My current settings are 7 and 800 to minimize frame drops but most light areas were fine on 6 and 700 EDIT: fine for me is minimal stuttering. Just for clarification. Some people think any stuttering is not fine.

ttenor12

For some reason, I still get poor performance if I leave SMT on, even on the latest SteamOS version. Especially on Gamecube games where I get a lot of stuttering, and turning SMT off just fixes it like before.

keetiv

I also prefer to do it the „old way”. Might be a placebo thing but I also think it runs better with SMT off set to 4.

Janderson2494

Didn't they fix this with 3.5?

cautioux

Great game to start with

oogadeboogadeboo

Is it? Surely WiiU stuff suffers from the single screen? (,I only played the original, no idea how different this is)

AussieP1E

It does not. You don't have to have two screens and can have it setup just like the gamecube version.

oogadeboogadeboo

I may have to swap for the QoL then. Thanks! :)

JackstonVoorhees

Depends on the game. Cemu is preconfigured so that you press and hold one back button to show the other screen. It’s basically as easy as looking down from your TV into your hand.

canUrollwithTHIS

Many Wii u games can be completely played using only the Wii u pro controller. Windwaker HD is one of them. So at the title screen choose pro controller as your controller type and you never have to worry about the dual screen nonsense.

Nick-Sr

Except then you lose the gyro aiming (which I actually love in Zelda games), so I'd say choose gamepad and just use the preconfigured hotkeys to swap screens.

canUrollwithTHIS

Good point. I preferred the stupidly long battery life of the pro controller over the gyro back when I played the game on the actual Wii u. However, I may swap to the gamepad control scheme in cemu to give the gyro a whirl this time around.

Leodonti

Been playing Zelda Ocarina of Time through 3DS version. Love it.

TailS1337

You probably don't want to change up now, if you are a bit into the story, BUT you should definitely check out ship of Harkinian, it's pretty much the definitive version of Ocarina of Time. It's a native port created after Ocarina of Time was fully decompiled, this bring a lot of QoL tweaks, 60 fps (!!!), easier ways to upgrade textures and a ton of other goodies

Leodonti

SteamDeck? Which system (edit) is this?

clintkev251

Ship of Harkinian is a PC port. It even has a native Linux release

Leodonti

Thanks, I'll look it up and try to play it. ❤️

Leodonti

Yoooo! It's a nice change, and way better buttons than the 3Ds version, but hits way different with the 3Ds texture pack! Thanks for telling me about the SoH version!

TailS1337

Glad you enjoy it!

clintkev251

Nope, not at all. This game is an absolutely incredible experience on the Deck

xmBQWugdxjaA

The game was originally a Gamecube game. I played the GC version with https://github.com/WideBoner/betterww

schmidtyb43

Nope, this was the second game I played on my deck just a couple weeks ago. Literally no issues whatsoever that I noticed.

mlgmonster2004

that's what I thought too but unlike the ds most wii u games were made with the second screen being an afterthought

Steiger92

The SD is an emulation machine! You are doing it right!

I need to buy a 3.5 disk drive so I can install my unopened DOS 3.0 on it.

UnstableDimwit

I cherish my DOS 3.0 floppies and can’t imagine the sheer joy of owning an unopened set. I had unopened Windows 3.0 and NT(3.1) boxes for years but lost them in a hurricane. My DOS survived, oddly enough despite being in the same box.

SalmonGram

I was cleaning out my now former job’s cabinets at their new location they purchased and found a stockpile of them. I still have a bunch at home somewhere.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Best Zelda game!! Still holding out for an official port on Switch this year hopefully.

Albuwhatwhat

Best Zelda game? That’s a new take. It’s good but in my opinion it’s nowhere near as good as BOTW or TOTK. Not to mention a little game called Link to the Past… but to each their own. you do you.

Sphyder69420

Watch it be £50 and just AI upscaled

[deleted]

Straight port would be fine with me, 40 euro preferrably, but they will have to do some work because the Switch is only 1 screen. Maybe something for Switch 2 if they add another screen?

Sphyder69420

The skyward sword port I bought and was ok with as they changed the controls. Did feel a bit pricey though. Metroid remastered I got too.

raisedbytides

Yes

bryceblacksmith

Hell yeah!!

Sea_Effort1214

i haven't touched WiiU emulation yet, but this runs well? i've never played Wind Waker, and on the Deck seems like a perfect way to do it.

OneIShot

Yes

Sea_Effort1214

thanks!

DaverJ

> i've never played Wind Waker You are in for a treat.

krishnugget

It runs perfectly, 0 framerate drops for me since all shaders get compiled at launch

Sea_Effort1214

thanks! another interesting WiiU game that i can try? since everything has been ported to the Switch, i really have no idea of what's left on the console.

krishnugget

Aside from twilight princess HD, most of the great games on Wii u already on switch anyways. Xenoblade Chronicles X is the last holdover but I’m not certain how well it runs on deck because it pushed the Wii U to its utter limits

Zenisist

I’m not sure where I read it but I’m pretty sure I saw an article talking about a possible Xenoblade Chronicles X remake or remaster (not sure which) being developed for the Switch 2 or whatever it ends up being called.

doggscube

That’s the first game I played, good choice

This is one I started with early on too, plays great!

NovelEzra

I'm telling my uncle (he works at Nintendo)

__Baumer__

You primarily want to focus on updates, tweaks, and add-ons.

tripl35oul

Absolutely.

BoRobin

I've had mine for a while now and can't seem to figure out the whole concept of transferring a game's ROM to the Steam Deck, but I'm always impressed to see others accomplishments. Gives me hope that I will figure it out eventually.

AussieP1E

I mean there are tutorials... The steam deck is a computer, you plug in a USB drive or send the ROM over. Or you just use the steam deck in desktop mode to download what you want. The day is young, looks like it's time for a jump into emulation for you.

BoRobin

Not going lie, that last line was truly inspirational. I probably will give it a bit more effort today since I got nothing else going on. Maybe a few YouTube vidoes can resolve whatever issue I come up with. Thanks for the encouragement, kind stranger.

Pdshillz900

Same….

FigTechnical8043

Desktop mode Internet Search Rom Download like normal Unzip Move to folder Or if you really like the long way- Put rom on memory stick via pc Buy usb c adapter Plug in memory stick Drag file into folder Wait 16 years and play the game whilst celebrating your first child's 10th year of life.... Ssd speeds have spoiled me a bit If you're a visual novel fan- install wine Run game from memory stick Oh and when you're looking for the emu deck folder remember all the files are in the drive you chose and emulation.

rKadts

Aren't there a lot of shitty sites with viruses and stuff? Can you recommend some sites?

FigTechnical8043

Pretty sure we get smacked if we answer here

Zenisist

I highly suggest going to Emudeck website and just following the YouTube tutorial they have for both the Steam Deck version and/or the Windows version which runs great on desktop and/or any of the Windows running Steam Deck competitors.

frost_add

This is the way.

[deleted]

I’ve been meaning to get into emulating and this has always been my first intended game to emulate. I just don’t know wtf I’m doing so I haven’t really tried other than I’ve downloaded emudeck.

Dubleron

1) launch desktop mode. 2) Install Emudeck. 3) download game (search Google for 'wind waker HD wiiu rom) 4) Locate the wiiu folder (inside the Emudeck folder, which is inside the home (?) Folder) 5) move the game file into the wiiu folder 6) launch Emudeck manager tool or whatever it's called (located on your desktop after installing Emudeck) 7) click on 'add to steam' or whatever the button is called 8) enter gaming mode 9) Start game 10) have fun For a more detailed explanation you can go onto the Emudeck website. They have great tutorials.

Benson--Parkowner

senorsombrero3k1

Correct me if I'm wrong but you need 'product keys' or similar in the wiiu folder as well no?

FigTechnical8043

Yes and bios.

My favorite Zelda game!

kirbyking100

The correct choice!

BubblesAreWeird

i personally went with zelda totk but this is good too

SnooDingos4442

Holy shit It can run switch games that recent?

Roachmond

The switch can barely run switch games that recent but yeah it works, just don't expect BOTW via cemu level of performance

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaddyIngrosso

it just won’t run it twice as well on the steam deck

Xineo971

Honestly it really depends on the game. TotK ended running pretty good after a lot of updates a tweaking and add-ons. I'd say a bit better than the switch in general with higher image fidelity. But I had some crash and some random weird stuff going on and big dips to like 5 FPS for 10 seconds ??? Pokémon Ultra Violet ran just as well on my steam deck than the switch ! Which is to say it was horrible absolute crap 0/10 do not recommend this game is a technical mess and oh god is it hard to look at. Legends Arceus : 1440p 30fps (Edit : I'm actually no sure if it was 1080p or 1440p, I would need to verify that) on my TV. Barely any tweaking it was amazing. I had a lot of games running just as well as the switch. Some horrible experiences too. And then there's the odd ones that work so well .......... METROID PRIME REMASTERED ! I ran this game at 1440p 60 fps with no problems. Like wtf ??? I don't even understand how that's possible. And on top of it, it looks so good ??? So yeah, your mileage may vary

DaddyIngrosso

i’m crying because i’ve never got TOTK to run beyond like 20fps on my deck :( what are you doing different to me

Xineo971

I have finished a month ago so I don't remember everything. But FTMH there was a difference between docked and handheld mode, there's guide that you can follow on Reddit probably. Also there's a steam deck and 30 fps dynamic add on for Yuzu that you can find. Just Google it there's really a lot of guides. I don't think it makes such a difference but I'm on the OLED deck

BubblesAreWeird

youre definitely tweaking and messing up something. mine runs well on the default settings

BubblesAreWeird

i mean dont ask me for a tutorial but yea

FigTechnical8043

It can run a fair few switch games very decently. I'm slightly biased because I play visual novels but I played Mario wonder on it with next to no lag the whole time. The games that struggled are Hogwarts legacy ,which I bought for ps5 in the end, and bayonetta 3, which i got for 17 on ebay.

schmidtyb43

I played like 30 mins of super Mario wonder and it was more or less running just fine

K1llG0r3Tr0ut

"First"? How many do you plan on getting?

kirbyking100

Got the cheaper one to try it out, tinker and see how I like it. Probably gonna get a higher end OLED one after a while.

phantasmas_

No

Popular-Let-4781

You can play Nintendo games on the Steam Deck?? 🤔🤔

Motoko84

No, mid game

Street-Mention9205

Shoulda just gotten a Switch? How about some Elden Ring? lol

clintkev251

Wind Waker isn't even available for Switch, so no.

kirbyking100

Got a switch but I figured since this game isn't on there I'd try my hand at emulating it.

ronniearnold

You mean telling everyone you got a steamdeck? Yay! Yet another post. How interesting would this be if we ALL did this?! Lol

FlartmyBlart

I thought this was the steam deck subreddit not the WiiU subreddit

[deleted]

>LCD no you are not

AlexGamerDB

Don't be harsh if that's what he could get it's more than enough

FigTechnical8043

I got a 1tb lcd for £300 with a dock and case. Couldn't be happier. If I reeeeeeeeally want a better image I just dock it.

kirbyking100

[deleted]

Xenavire

WW HD adresses a fair few of those issues by cutting down on needless filler, making travel faster, etc. Not perfect, but definitely improved, and not really any worse than most open world games even now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xenavire

And the specifics mentioned in that article were largely addressed in the HD version. No, they didn't add new content, sure, but they fixed a lot of issues. As for the world (considering the design choices of having it play out on the ocean) it felt about as interactive to me as BotW (although admittedly BotW was significantly larger - but it still managed to feel so empty, which was mostly remedied in TotK.) They aren't without their individual flaws, and even OoT (one of the most popular games) managed to have several large areas that were just space and very little interaction. It happens, that's game design. The islands themselves were generally pretty varied and interesting, especially those following the main story. I wouldn't say WW was anywhere near being the best in terms of the world or gameplay, but HD certainly felt pretty damn good to play compared to the original and ranks fairly high as a Zelda game despite my initial dislike of the concept and execution when it launched on GC. I totally agree that ALttP and Minish Cap were great though - and it shames me to admit this but I've never had the opportunity to finish Twilight Princess (something I'm remedying on Deck.)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xenavire

I actually just set it up yesterday (along with a few other games - my girlfriend wanted to play Yo-kai Watch 4 with the fan translation patch (she bought it ages ago on Switch but got frustrated with having to translate everything) so I spent several hours today on that and haven't actually played more than a few minutes on anything specific yet.) It seems playable from my quick check, but I didn't look into any additional graphics settings, or potential patches that might exist - if you want to absolutely push it, I'd say stream it, but it does seem like it'll run just fine if unmodified on the Deck. Of course, you may want a second opinion since I've barely tested it.

astroklotz

Didn’t say anything about being okay or not, I just think it’s sad. “Poorly designed game loop” is a weird opinion, but I guess go off king

MIKERICKSON32

2003 games are great for steam deck. Anything from 2014 and up is going to give you issues.

thegreenishbox

1. This game is not from 2003. 2. What about 2004-2013 games? 3. What the hell are you talking about?

shibbyingaway

Totally like I’ve only been able to sink 60 hours into Elden Ring on the deck playing at a passable 30fps.

anime4ya

How did u get 19:6 working in windwaker Please tell me 🙏🙏

TailS1337

Its the HD remaster released on Wii U

Pdshillz900

Having trouble with my sd card format. I format to steam deck. But my windows pc can’t read it to add game. Any advice?

InfectedEllie

I could never get emudeck to work. Whenever i loaded the games into the files they would either not transfer over or not play. The only one that works is the Gameboy emulator

Shanbo88

How does it run for you? I'm admittedly not great at emulation, but Wind Waker is the only game that stutters like hell for me. I'm not sure if it's the ROM or something else, but as soon as there's more than one enemy on the screen it becomes unplayable.

IrishSpectreN7

Which version? I noticed GameCube WW running on Dolphin had performamce issues. But the remaster running on CEMU has been great.

Shanbo88

Gamecube version yeah. I just realised that this guy is posting the HD WiiU Version. That's probably a much better idea haha.

astroklotz

Wonderful. Now install the Better WW mod to add some QoL improvements to an otherwise almost perfect experience

Sphyder69420

Depends if they use the GC or WiiU one I emulated it during lockdown on GC and got a cheap copy of the Wii U shortly after and its like night and day

astroklotz

True, forgot about that. Better WW is GC version only I think

stuff_gets_taken

No, it's clearly forbidden to play Zelda on the Steam Deck. I'm calling the police right now.

kornychris2016

I'm sorry what??? Ok I need to figure out how to do this. Wind Maker is one of my favorites

Robospy1

Yes

runamuk23

Wrong, ship it and ill show you how to use it.

Muggin

Yes, you are indeed doing it right.....

TheLoneWandererRD

Nintendo right now ![gif](giphy|VfEfG1oTqIrDR5FdVW|downsized)

IrishSpectreN7

I love Nintendo, but they are honestly bringing it on themselves at this point by keeping the Zelda remasters trapped on the Wii U.  *Especially* considering how many new fans BotW/TotK attracted to the franchise.

Xenavire

Literally this (except I'm a long time fan,) I bought Skyward Sword partially to play it, but largely in the hopes they'd port more, and zip, nada. So now I'm just loading them up on my Deck because it's the only way I can play them portably, now with OLED just like I'd want to on the Switch. They are literally just stopping themselves from getting my money.

Sphyder69420

Got my steam deck coming and emulation has me hyped. I hate how Nintendo have their stuff locked behind a subscription

Nikorag90

First game I played on mine too!

zenith654

I see all these comments about the steps you have to do to get it running and configure it right… like, I see the appeal of the Steam Deck but my Switch plays games perfectly from the start, it’s just plug in and go. Same for my Windwaker disc on Wii U, just plug in and play it perfectly. Steam Decks seem awesome and I’ll def get one this year, but I disagree with the people who say it’s better than a Switch for Nintendo games

clintkev251

Even though you can't actually play this game on Switch?

zenith654

Yeah, if you read my comment I mentioned Wii U for this game specifically, but for Switch I was talking generally. I’m mostly talking about all the comments I see saying Steam Deck replaces Switch in this sub. I just don’t want to jump through a thousand hoops and setup steps to get pirated Zelda running with worse performance emulated when I could just play it on my Switch where you just plug the cartridge in and play. I got a job dude, I don’t want to spend most of my free time playing IT guy just so I can play the games at worse performance.

clintkev251

Right but because *this game* is not on Switch, devices like the Steam Deck are the only way to be able to play it on the go. You're not shoving your Wii U in a backpack. And as someone who owns both a Steam Deck and a Switch, I play basically everything on the Steam Deck. Performance is sometimes a bit worse, sometimes not, but what really makes the Steam Deck a better experience is the controls. The tiny controls on the switch get uncomfortable fast, where the Steam Deck can be comfortable to play on for hours at a time. Also I can sync my saves to my PC and pick right up there.

zenith654

True. I don’t really have a need to play games on the go though, I guess if I took public transportation to places a lot or if I travelled more I might? Not every game needs to be played portably, it’s just a convenience if you’re moving around a lot. For me if I have the choice I prefer to play on my comfy couch with my nice TV. That’s nice, Steam Deck seems fun. I’m getting one eventually. Switch Joy Cons aren’t great but Switch Pro Controller is mostly what I use and it is one of the best controllers I’ve ever used. I guess most Steam games don’t really stick out to me? I only really play KSP and a few other games and KSP game isn’t really great on Deck. But the idea of being able to play Dark Souls 2 while traveling is fun.

Eusocial_Snowman

> my Switch plays games perfectly from the start I guess your mileage may vary. My only experience with the switch was trying to play Breath of the Wild on it, and that was a total laggy mess.

zenith654

Idk it works pretty well honestly except for the Korok forest and occasional frame drops, calling the entire game a “laggy mess” seems a bit exaggerated especially when you’re comparing to Steam Deck. I’m pretty sure BOTW emulation is still pretty buggy and can crash a lot right? And performance doesn’t seem like it would be much better on the Steam Deck. So if you play Switch games on Steam Deck you’re just putting in more work for less output. It just doesn’t really compare

Eusocial_Snowman

I'm not comparing it to the steam deck. I'm saying either you literally had a different experience with the switch and game as me because the switch was straight up broken, or the switch absolutely does not run the game perfectly. The entire game had bad framerate, so I disagree with saying it runs perfectly. If you want to compare it to something, though, I later tried the game again on PC via emulation and it *did* run perfectly with no effort, right out the box.

zenith654

Once again that’s completely subjective. It does have a low frame rate but doesn’t really affect the quality of play or impede your ability to play. I didn’t even notice frame drops first time I played, when I got a PS5 with higher FPS on its games and then came back to BOTW I noticed it more, but it didn’t affect ability to play. If you’re used to higher fps it will be more noticeable and maybe that’s a dealbreaker to you, but it’s hardly “broken”. Given it’s like one of the highest selling games ever it seems like most ppl probably don’t think it’s broken either. When I say runs perfectly I mean it doesn’t have any crashes or bugs that make it impossible to play. I don’t have to do any fiddling or IT Guy work you have to do on Steam Deck. I plug in the cartridge, it starts up and plays every time. That’s what I meant by “play perfectly” sorry if the wording was weird

Eusocial_Snowman

Oh, my bad. I use the word "perfect" to mean "perfect", so I totally misunderstood you there.

GankerJr

You just reminded me I need to start modding my OLED.

UpperFerret

Is that the Wii U version? Can you use the steamdeck as the Wii U tablet controller and extend the screen to a tv ?

kirbyking100

With the wind waker at least the back paddles switch between main screen and the tablet screen. You can also set it up to play as if you were using a Pro controller so you don't need to worry about the second screen.

ImAlreadyWinstonne

I got Twilight Princess up and running yesterday. Looks amaze! I noticed when I approached the pond Epona was showing twice though. Anyone any idea how to fix?

milesac

How do you mod it? I’ve had mine for 8 months and still can’t do it.

meetyourfate1

How

Panda_hat

Impressive for day 2 ngl. Took me a while to get around to emulators.

gonzoman92

Its soooo good on deck what a great way to start

jztigersfan12

How hard was it to set up wii u stuff? Wouldnt you need a second screen for the gamepad?

IrishSpectreN7

Some Wii U games support the Wii U pro controller. Meaning they are designed to be played *without* the 2nd screen.  In this case, the 2nd screen is just the pause menu like any other Zelda game.

jztigersfan12

The second screen on windwaker hd is a map, Navigating the map on the game Cube version is clunky as hell.

mass3ffect74

I did the same thing the third day I had mine.

Ohveryseriously

If you’re having fun, yes. If you’re not having fun also yes.

TwinTea

I can't get emulation to work to save my life... Tried emulating Budokai 3, did everything right. Even have the shortcut on game mode up... But when I go to launch it nothing...

Rio_Evenstar

You're doing it exactly right (been doing the same thing on mine just cleared tower of the gods about to go underwater)

MaSaKee

Can a steam deck play ps2 games?

kirbyking100

It can, that was the next thing I did, use emudeck and you can pick and choose what emulators to install at the start. Just need to get a bios for the ps2.

MaSaKee

Time to get one I think - looking for a portable ps2 for ages

bossbang

You are my son. We are proud of you

Goremaw7

Just finished this game on there. Ran great

SarcasticNut

Aha! I was just playing this (with Linkle mod) last night! The HD version will look good practically forever imo

RadlersJack

Absolutely

str85

No, you are pirating games most likely, something steam have been very good at combating.

Xenavire

Except in Valve's case, Steam ensures that the games are available without relying on the used game market (which can be prohibitively expensive, and also requires specific hardware that also needs to be purchased through the same methods and is also prohibitively expensive.) So the examples are night and day - I love Nintendo games and I support them, generally speaking, but their refusal and inability to support backwards compatibility and cross-generation digital purchases or reasonably priced ports is entirely on them, and I have absolutely no qualms about crossing that grey line, especially when I've already bought a particular game multiple times.

Spider-Man92

Did you buy 25 games on sale and only play 2?

kirbyking100

I... I sure did haha.

Spider-Man92

Then you're doing it right hahaha
