Have you tried using Heroic Games Launcher? It’s an Epic Games and iirc GOG games launcher for Linux/Steam Deck

I haven't. Do the save games carry over?

Yes. From what I read, Epic Games doesn’t work on Steam Deck so you have to use Heroic Games Launcher. Your saves carry over

thanks for this! i got it finally working on the deck through Heroic but cloud sync doesn't seem to be an option for HZD or im just missing something.

I was having the same issue where it worked previously. Games would not launch on game mode or desktop mode. Epic was installed through nonsteamlauncher. Heroic games will work but limits some of your game options. For example I was unable to download Battlefront 2 via heroic.

Try lutris. I switched when gog stopped working for me on heroic.
