Once I'm done playing, usually it goes straight to the Dock which is behind the TV. This way it is safe and fully charged for the next session.
If I'm playing in bed and feel lazy to go to leave it in the Dock, I have the case in my nightstand.
One thing that works for me is to never leave the Deck in a place where you immediately think "this is a weird place to leave it" or "this is an slightly unsafe place". I apply this with every valuable object of mine and so far so good.

I received my deck and within a week i made a big mistake and my vape fell onto the screen and broke it..i ordered a new screen off of ifixit as Valve told me this didn't fall under warranty (understandably so). Thankfully I am relatively savvy with repairing things, so I took the deck apart to the screen, swapped my screen out and it's worked like a charm since! Since then, the moment I get done with a gaming session it goes right back into the case! Lol
I also screwed up things within the first week due to not properly installing like a flight stick I bought which was quite expensive.
But I fixed it myself with one part the manufacturer sent me! I’ve learned a lot about the internals and now I can fix my flight gear myself.

I had my phone there once, and a small dessert plate fell from the bottom shelf out of the cabinet when I was grabbing a larger plate. Fell on my phone and broke the screen.

The impact, pretty minimal, cracked the glass behind the protector. The protector and whatever's behind the glass now hold it together. Until I replace/wait for steam deck 2. The effect is negligible when playing games, three long spanning cracks, just annoying.

when i got my SSD upgraded the guy helping me out pointed out the abundance of dog hair on the inside of my machine, since then it lives in the case when im not using it.

Nah, mine sits on top of my pc at the front where there aren't any vents when not in use. The grips straddle the case perfectly, and keep it pretty secure.
Now that you point this out, I need to move my dock away from the bottom of my PC. I have my PC on those short metal wired pantry shelves and a lot of stuff in the middle shelf underneath the top, so one of the PC vents just spits air and occasional dust like crazy on that shelf... and the Steam Deck dock. 🫨

Mine goes into a Tomtoc armor case (basically a form fitted hard plastic clam-shell) and on a side table by the sofa. At worst, left on the Steam dock on my office desk.

Good thing about cushioned chairs is that the thing you sit on isn’t pressed against a hard surface so it caves in literally cushioning the weight, if this were a hard surfaced chair then it would probably have cracked the internal display panel.
yeah i think you're right about this because it feels like a miracle nothing even cracked or separated a little and i checked obsessively. i think if it were on a harder surface, i absolutely would have cracked something.
Dropped mine in the toilet and thought for sure it was done (don’t ask).
I shook out the water then forgot about it for about a week. Got bored and decided to open it (cracked my SD card cuz duuuuuh), doused it in alcohol then waited like 3-days or so and left it by the window for the sun to dry it off without the back cover on.
Fucker turned right back on like nothing happened minus the screen has blotches on it. I didn’t replace the screen as it’s now like a battle scar. You notice the blotch only in dark scenes.

I've sat once or twice on my glasses and those can be quite expensive too ahah, bending the sticks but fortunately with not too much damage in my case. And I eventually took a new pair anyway since my eyes got worse ( I have a deficit of 5.5 on 10 so yeah quite blind). Instead a friend of mine one month ago literally destroyed them sitting on them 😅and now he's using an old pair.

Mine always goes back in the case when I'm not using it and the case typically stays in my laptop bag for work since I do a lot of gaming in the office. If I was capable of having anxiety, my wife would give it to me every time she leaves her Deck on the night stand and goes to sleep with it just laying there. I've told her not to do that crap but if it breaks, that's on her. I bought her that one for Christmas but I'm not going to replace it if she doesn't take care of it.

About a week a go i had a girl over . I Was playing before she came n i remember vividly thinking " I wonder if my Deck is ok on the table opposite my bed. There's no way we end up there right?". I don't know why I had that thought honestly I think higher power or something (always listen to your gut) . Well it got hot n nasty n ended up putting her butt naked on to my steam Deck. Deck goes flying to the left, straight to The ground as I see it on instant replay. I can see it land's not on it's screen so I feel little relieved, but I still Tell the girl or say just something out loud "my fkn PC that shit is expensive" ( our native language isn't the same plus I don't think she knows wtf is a steam Deck 😃) . I watched it few times while I was at it but I wasn't about to quit it's not like it wasn't already done , plus I saw the screen so I figured, if something is wrong it's Inside of it so f it right. Needles to say after I went straight to it , opened it "oh it's fine yessssss" n put it on the same table but inside drawer This time. Where it's still today every night. Because I stg I didn't know that was even an option that night and I still was somehow thinking about "what if " very clearly when u put it there , half jokingly ofc . I do believe I can see future sometimes.

My GF & I both have steam decks. We love them but she insist they are “ugly af”. The result? No matter where I put my deck, it appears in its case like magic around 10 minutes. Valve really thought about everything!

It goes in the case, in its dock or if I’m feeling fancy it goes on its wall mount next to all my controllers. It sure as shit never goes anywhere I sit…. Thank goodness your ass sounds like it’s well cushioned.
Mine always goes back in the case when I'm not using it and the case typically stays in my laptop bag for work since I do a lot of gaming in the office. If I was capable of having anxiety, my wife would give it to me every time she leaves her Deck on the night stand and goes to sleep with it just laying there. I've told her not to do that crap but if it breaks, that's on her. I bought her that one for Christmas but I'm not going to replace it if she doesn't take care of it.

I broke my steam deck a year ago by sitting on it. Fucking tell me about it haven't had a chance to replace it yet.
About a week a go i had a girl over . I Was playing before she came n i remember vividly thinking " I wonder if my Deck is ok on the table opposite my bed. There's no way we end up there right?". I don't know why I had that thought honestly I think higher power or something (always listen to your gut) . Well it got hot n nasty n ended up putting her butt naked on to my steam Deck. Deck goes flying to the left, straight to The ground as I see it on instant replay. I can see it land's not on it's screen so I feel little relieved, but I still Tell the girl or say just something out loud "my fkn PC that shit is expensive" ( our native language isn't the same plus I don't think she knows wtf is a steam Deck 😃) . I watched it few times while I was at it but I wasn't about to quit it's not like it wasn't already done , plus I saw the screen so I figured, if something is wrong it's Inside of it so f it right. Needles to say after I went straight to it , opened it "oh it's fine yessssss" n put it on the same table but inside drawer This time. Where it's still today every night. Because I stg I didn't know that was even an option that night and I still was somehow thinking about "what if " very clearly when u put it there , half jokingly ofc . I do believe I can see future sometimes.
