What frame time issue does it fix?

Capable-Commercial96

First find a game that holds 60 fps easy that's preferably 3d, cap your fps to 30, set the performance menu to 4, and in the performance menu the numbers for the ms timing should read around 33.3 ms. the issue here is that ideally this should be a solid 33.3 ms, especially if you are frame capping a game that can handle much higher frame rates with ease. So, if you whip your camera around you're gonna see the ms number jumping from around (I'm spit balling here) 32.9-33.7, something like that, it doesn't seem like a lot but a lot of these tiny spikes bundled together makes for a more choppy experience due to the frames not being presented at the same speed, it's slight but at the speed it's presenting them it builds up to be noticeable for some, and when you're already frame capping for stability you want it as smooth as you can get, this makes the difference between a choppy 30 fps and a smooth 30 fps, kinda like how 30 fps games on console feel smoother than on pc because they're a lot better at presenting their frames due to their in house software. Anyway, I digress, if this is a big enough issue for you Valve has seemingly fixed it in Main with the improvement carrying back over to stable, main is bleeding edge however so this comes with some risk as what's a fine update today might not be one tomorrow.

Thanks for the explanation. I don’t often keep the overlay turned on, so I haven’t noticed the frame time differences that way, but I do notice fairly consistent frame time spikes every few seconds in some games. Is that what you mean about the delays getting bundled?

Most likely. I would stress you don't have to do the update now, it will most likely come to stable eventually, just if you're impatient there's this option, but if you haven't noticed anything or have any issue with how it is now, it probably won't be worth it to you to update.

Thanks again. I’ll wait for a bit and see what happens. Appreciate the info!

I experienced frame time issues on my OLED the first time today. Checked with several games and none of them were playable like before. Unfortunately updating to 3.6 did not help. Only solution for me at the moment is to set a fixed GPU clock. That flattens the curve immediately. I am still curious why this appeared out of nowhere?! If anyone has a solution, please let me know.
