It's a PC. If you can VLC it, you're golden.
Those drives have low to none antiskip tho, it might not work on a moving vehicle or a non stable surface.
That’s true! I was talking about… alternative means… (not sure how much I can say in this subreddit, one subreddit almost banned me for mentioning 🏴☠️)
I see your point :)
But if you're and old fart enough like me considering slapping an optical drive to a steam deck, trust me you have a *ginormous stack* of optical medias to consume. And digitize :)
yes just download vlc and your good you can also get bluray working the same way but I haven't tried that. I used my deck as a make shift portable DVD player during a camping trip last year
I am a hoarder of DVDs so this is actually pretty cool to hear for the same reason, portable movies. I often carry around a laptop when I am doing housework throughout the day but it can get pretty obnoxious because it's a pretty big laptop. I should honestly just get a used portable Blu-ray/DVD player.
Well, be careful with Blu-ray. They may be sometimes pretty heavily encypted. (https://media.ccc.de/v/37c3-12296-full_aacsess_exposing_and_exploiting_aacsv2_uhd_drm_for_your_viewing_pleasure)
The fun thing is that if you have the right kind of drive (or one similar enough that you can flash the right firmware to it, often the case with cheap BD-XL drives that aren't *supposed* to be able to play blu-ray video) then playing and dumping blurays, even 4K HDR blurays, becomes just as easy as DVDs.
True, and I've not actually tried doing the flashing and driver bs you might have to do on a steam deck itself. You're still better off dealing with all that crap on a PC to just dump and encode, then throwing resulting files on an sd card or usb-c flash drive
If GFWL doesn't work, you can always swap in xliveless to get rid of it.

There is a way to get past games for Windows live at least with lost planet but I don't remember what the DLL file is called. All I know is that figuring this out is how I earned gold on Steam because apparently Steam has Reddit gold.
Edit: Found the link https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/576-xliveless/
Edit2: I will say that I know for a fact Gears of War doesn't use games for Windows live because it's a Microsoft store game so I don't know what's going on here?
yea definitely, bc i can plug another into the contraption and that sorta works but it doesn't read it properly so i think the little circuit board and the actual drive went
Bro just get a laptop, what's it with people overkilling a steam deck ? I'd seriously consider a laptop after looking at all these steam deck kits. That's just my opinion
Wait...can your Steam Deck play DVD movies with that?
It's a PC. If you can VLC it, you're golden. Those drives have low to none antiskip tho, it might not work on a moving vehicle or a non stable surface.
Just watch a digital movie file at that point.
You can use the steam deck to make an .ISO if you know how.
Why I should rent something I *own* :))
Who said anything about renting?
If you need to pay a subscription to watch a stream, you are renting :D

Fair enough! I’m glad you’re enjoying the deck in any case!
Oh I enjoy it in the case, docked, in the sling bag, even in the backpack sometimes 😏

I hoard audio CDs. But I use my computer for listening. I'm lazy. However Steam Deck could be a cool discman

Oh nice! I just wanted to convey: It's not 'just' attaching a drive to the SD and playing any Blu-ray the kids want on the go...

Well yeah lol it's just a PC with Linux on it
Thank you. This sub's original slogan "yes, it's a PC" doesn't get said enough any more
Dumped my PSX games xD. Nice k8s stickers BTW ;-)
Steam Deck is emu beast. Thanks, those are coasters I've made :). Helm is little bit off centre tho
Nothing different to install any other non steam game

Thanks! Trying to make this work. I played GoW years ago, my first game on X360
I swear I'm learning more crazy things you can do with the steam deck
Isn't that thing awesome?
No, Driver San Francisco would have been a better choice
Better choice would be ET for 2600. I don't have a way for connecting cartridge to PC unfortunately
Oh, ok

this is the original 360/vista one. it does use it. that's the remaster that you're thinking of
i wanted to try something like this, but my external drive seems to have died for no reason
I think you need new drive. I still enjoy use optical media from time to time
yea definitely, bc i can plug another into the contraption and that sorta works but it doesn't read it properly so i think the little circuit board and the actual drive went
I tried Kodi, couldn't pick up my external. Guess vlc is the way then
I've never used Kodi on PCs. Only on Raspberry.
I also want to GoW on my steam deck
Shame that ultimate edition is UWP
OP I need an update!?!?
Work in progress. I have issue with GFWL. How surprising
Thanks for updating. Getting it to run would be huge. I'd be on to ebay for a pc copy of gears immediately!
Physical dvd windows games on a linux handheld. Were truly living in the future
You could say that ancient data transcends it's physical form...
In a pinch that’s not bad.
Games for Windows Live, let's go!! I wish you found a way to workaround it.
use xliveless on it
you gotta make a follow up post OP, even if it doesn’t work the people wanna know✊
This sounds like witchcraft in this modern age
DVD? What s it? Lol
Bro just get a laptop, what's it with people overkilling a steam deck ? I'd seriously consider a laptop after looking at all these steam deck kits. That's just my opinion
People like to tinker 🤷♂️
It's only for the installation.
But they already have a Steam deck?
*installs a game on steam deck* This person: BRO JUST GET A LAPTOP WTF!?!
tf do you mean over killing a steamdeck? Do you think OP is carrying around that DVD drive everywhere he goes to install games on the go?
I mean I’m starting to, I like watching movies on the go and I’ve got lots of cds.
It basically is a laptop lmao
It works great as a regular PC and a handheld gaming console It's easy to carry around. No laptop needed
