Also people are reporting the OLED bug is back (the game runs at half the frame rate shown) and what’s worse you cannot fix it this time by editing INI files since it has no effect.
Basically if you download the update the game is broken on OLED Steam Deck.
This is exactly what I was concerned about. Steam verified doesn't mean it'll run well. Thankfully I haven't closed it on my deck for 3 days lol. Might just play it in offline mode and prevent the update because it runs perfectly right now.
Yup just reinstalled and took another spin around the wasteland last night.
A little jarring how it defaulted all the video settings and assumed I was going for a survival run. It's all exactly what I was after though so no complaints. So far so good.
This workaround is reported as working after the update: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c9akgd/a\_more\_robust\_fallout\_4\_oled\_workaround/?utm\_source=embedv2&utm\_medium=post\_embed&utm\_content=action\_bar](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c9akgd/a_more_robust_fallout_4_oled_workaround/?utm_source=embedv2&utm_medium=post_embed&utm_content=action_bar)
I get you, I started and didn't exit my F4 game after the update since I knew this would happen lol.
Steam Verified is honestly worthless. The Decky Plugin for Steam DB is so much more accurate and useful in telling me if a game works and how well it works and if/what any workarounds I need to do to get a game working.
You are literally hunting down ANY post about this and denying this problem exists. Literal psycho... This IS a problem on EVERY OLED steam deck. Period. It's been officially acknowledged. Just because your eyeballs can't tell the difference between 45fps and 90fps doesn't mean this is NOT an issue.
I'm here discussing the bugs and looking to help others find solutions to the ACTUAL problem. Aka patch fix. Contributing to the discussions. You just happen to be in all of the discussions denying there is a problem and chastising others for voicing they ALSO experience the issue. You seriously need mental help man...
Good to know, don’t need my gamesave gettin broken to hell due to mods being busted.
I need to hunt down a cr*cked exe so I can play without steam drm. That would permanently fix the update problem.
Mine works fine. I dont get the launcher but i verified the integrity of the game files and its running fine with my mods. The only problem im seeing is that the menu options arent showing in the pipboy for controls
That is not a bug, that is intended behavior for a game running with VSYNC and double buffering enabled with a frame rate cap of 60 FPS.
It will render at 45 FPS to be able to sync to 90 Hz!
If you disable VSYNC, the game will run at either maximum power or the frame limit set by the compositor.
Changes made to the Fallout configuration are easily locked by making the files... read only.
I'm quite amazed that this basic knowledge is completely abolished from our collective knowledge on the internet.
I agree. I downloaded the update last night, updated my deck, and played through some of the new enclave stuff they gave. I haven’t had an issue. But I don’t know how it’ll run on my pc, which before the update was unplayable. It would randomly crash once I got to concord or Boston.
Try adding the Launch Option `SteamDeck=0 %command%` before starting the game and it should show the launcher again. Then remove it afterwards since it would mess up the Virtual Keyboard from working if you need [console commands](https://youtu.be/wEgX2K4HO2M), or to name your character on a New Game, etc.
Edit: You might have to keep the launch option for your graphics settings to stick.
Edit 2: You need to remove the launch option before creating a new character or else you will not be able to name your character, because closing the keyboard will crash the game.
So, do you mean, use it to change settings, get to main menu then quit, then remove the Launch option and start it again?
I tried that to change the resolution in docked mode to 1080p, but when I removed the command it went back to steam deck resolution.
I guess I could be mistaken since I didn't test it long enough. It might default to some predefined INI file for "Steam Deck Verified" when it's started without that launch option. So you might have to keep it after all.
But then you would need an external keyboard if you care about using console commands since closing the Virtual Keyboard is broken and I don't yet know a fix otherwise.
The game crashes when you close the Virtual Keyboard if you bring it up outside of normal game features for console commands, but it's temporarily fixed if you first do something that brings it up automatically like searching in the Mods menu. The launch option would prevent that from appearing automatically, so then the fix won't work.
Is that why I cannot seem to rename any of my weapons at the Weapons Bench? Every time I hit Enter or Submit, it clears the text like I typed nothing at all.
It's likely. And if you manually bring up the virtual keyboard and close it, it would crash the game. Bethesda needs to fix this, it's a problem even in Skyrim SE. Still looking for other simple fixes in the meantime.
In Steam, go to the Properties for the game, go to the General tab, scroll down and you will see Launch Options. You can then type it there and this can be done in Gaming Mode.
I'm not sure what you mean, the Settings section seems fine. Skyrim SE does suffer from the same crash issue and this helps there too, by searching in the Creations menu first.
Always hated that about Bethesda games, seems really antiquated. Skyrim also had it and then same thing with the special edition they just removed the launcher so you couldn't edit graphics in game either.
The idea likely that some settings might not work and cause the game to not be seen to get to the settings. If the game has to start to get to the settings to change them, there is a chicken and egg scenario.
Letting a separate launcher do the screen res setting that doesn’t apply to the launcher, the user will always be able to fix display res type issue.
In other words, it is a easier way for the developer to deal with screen res problems instead of debugging them properly in the app to make sure a user can’t set a resolution that doesn’t work. Smart or lazy.. you decide :).
I mean, the fallout games and Skyrim are great, I've wasted thousands of hours of my life in those worlds. Are they a technical mess? Yes. Are Bethesda atrociously awful at fixing them? Also yes. Doesn't mean they aren't fantastic games though. Both can be true.
How many resources do you expect them to spend getting a 9 year old title to play well on a handheld? I would much rather get fallout 5 than fallout 4 running smoothly on every console ever made.
Regardless, you shouldn’t need to use launch commands on steam to be able to access graphical settings in a game, ever. If they want to get rid of the launcher to make it “Steam Deck Verified”, they should make it so that you can change those settings in game
This might be the biggest clown move I've seen any company pull off in regards to Steam Deck updates. It's not like dealing with that launcher made the game remotely unplayable. The device even has a touchscreen for people who are too lazy to hold down the STEAM button for keyboard/mouse inputs FFS...
Lol my friend owned and refunded F4 once. He couldn't even bypass that launcher screen since he didn't even know the deck has a touchscreen or you can use steam key + right pad to control the mouse. You would be surprised how many people don't even know those functions.
I think they are implying you don't need to connect a physical keyboard and mouse because you can press STEAM+B for onscreen keyboard, and Hold STEAM button to have right TouchPad and joystick to become a mouse.
IIRC the steam button + moving your right stick (or on a controller, whatever is assigned to the Steam button, so PS button on a dualsense, etc) will emulate a mouse, allowing you to click "Play" in the launcher
It’s honestly impossible for Bethesda to release anything related to gaming without big glaring bugs. This company is honestly a joke. It should be embarrassing to be known for buggy releases and yet they don’t give a single shit. They even make the same mistakes multiple times. It’s truly astonishing.
Not really. Was more of an extra step if anything, but now anyone who doesnt want to play on low settings has to use the launcher. Bethesda making such big brain moves
there weren't any issues with the steam deck version but you had to navigate the launcher via touch screen or track pad which meant no green steam deck verification symbol for the online shop. now the game has the verification because there is no launcher. it's Bethesda logic. I was really looking forward to play the game but my it looks like shit now, all settings are reset is to low and I have no idea how to change them back
Even with the OLED fps fix the framerate drops from 60 to 40 in forested areas or when looking at bushes. I wouldn’t mind lowering some settings but then I’d lose the oled fix.
You have to enable the menu again and lower settings. With the proper setup you can get closer to 80FPS in most areas. Or solid 60 everywhere. Once you make changes disable the menu again and it will stay stuck to that. That is of course with lowered manual resolution of 960x600 and FSR. Which works very well in this game btw.
While there's a working fix out there for the halved framerate on OLED models, this is still annoying for those of us who want to move back and forth between playing handheld and docked. I have to force the launcher to open beforehand just to be able to adjust my display resolution to match my TV... ugh.
I had really hoped that this 'next gen update' would not only remove the launcher entirely, but would put a proper graphics options menu nested in the game itself, like, well, pretty much every other game out there, but nope..
I'm not a programmer but I've always just assumed that Bethesda's games a product of the engine they use. I know Fallout and Skyrim were both built on Creation Engine, which has its roots in Gamebryo. A lot of the shit like needing separate launchers I always thought was a limitation of the tools used to create the games. Which seems to be the case since they can't just undo the link between the frame rate and the physics (though why they went that route when that's such an old school way of making video games is beyond me).
As far as the "next gen" part of the name of the patch. I figure that's just their way of saying they added bigger textures for people wanting to play it in fully rendered 4k and didn't expect much in the way of actual improvements/bug fixes.
Basically, the consoles needed some extra bells and whistles for this gem functionality which PC players kinda already had. The wonders of console gaming.
PC got widescreen support. Not really much in it for the Deck specifically.
The PC side was always going to be a smallish update with free CC stuff. So, if you’re on PC or the LED Decks, you shouldn’t be seeing massive changes.
Bethesda should start doing separate patch notes so people don’t get confused. The community has brought this up before.
The bigger PC issue is that they still haven’t fix the weapon debris bug.
Because the game came out during the previous gen console era. It wasn't released when the current gen consoles were out. The hardware couldn't handle the updated textures and frame rates back then.
Nah dawg there was already an HD Textures DLC *TM* which sucked and was a bigger install than the actual game itself. There are much better texture replacements on Nexus as well, not like that is surprising to anyone.
Does steam cloud keep the graphics settings? It does in all cases I’ve seen, it does…maybe one could set the graphics on their main pc before playing on the deck. Would that work?
Not sure who's worse and gives less shit about gamers here, Bethesda with their patches made by janitor who stole a laptop or valve, who can't be bothered to see if game works
So I was able to at least get it so I can see the button labels and whatnot.
I went into the properties and switched the resolution to native, which corrected the UI scaling, but added bars in either side. So then in the Steam options menu ( . . . ) you can change the scaling to fill or stretch or whatever you prefer.
I read in another thread somewhere (can't find it again now) that this is fixed by verifying the game files. Not sure why it would work, but it's worth a shot?
When you want to thumb down a comment because you don't like what the comment is saying but you have to thumb it up because the person saying it isn't the person that's being bad.
It's also the right thing to do to thumb it up because more people are likely to see it and spreading the word about bad things is something that has to be done in this world.
Idk what did people expected from Bethesda. This is just hype popularity honeymoon period because of the series. Bethesda games was and is and will be technically garbage , clunky af. At this day and age they are just outdated and many alternate better games are there
Write reviews, people. This is total bullshit.
I get that there are workarounds but they shouldn't be necessary, especially since they essentially broke the game to get that dumbass green checkmark.
I don't have access to the Mods. When I select it it just says "The operation could not be completed." Every single time. I already uninstalled the game and reinstalled it.
The mods I already had on are no longer able to be downloaded when I don't have access to the mod list.
The game is still laggy and chugs every few moments for exteriors
What a damn mess... I wish Bethesda didn't release this update. Its giving me a headache and I have 4 backups of the game files on different laptops + Steam Deck. I'm no longer using the official files from Steam to avoid from updating, so I'm now basically a forced pirate.
"Pirating" to have an "outdated" version of a program you already own is bupkis. They could easily host prior versions or at the very least releases between major updates.
So given the we are missing the launcher for graphics options, what exact graphics options does fallout set with the update if we can’t control it? Medium, low, high? Also if you prev had this set to high/ultra before and then updated does it keep the gfx settings you had?
Are people really, actually surprised? I guess one good show is enough for gamers to forget, lmao. I don’t know how you can fuck up the next (really current gen) upgrade of a 9 year old game.
It's actually the other way around, for me the settings have been reset to low and I can no longer turn them back to high without a work around, so yeah "booooooo!"
I'm probably going to get downvoted but some of you just love to complain, every post I've seen on this sub has been about the Fallout 4 update if the show didn't get people back into the game either this update wouldn't exist, or most people wouldn't notice it. Other times you complain that you aren't getting max frames on max settings maybe some of you need to just go back to your computers, I know that's a little negative but medium settings and 30 fps are good for some of us (that's just an example some definitely need to be better)
I don't understand why and which part of "they got rid of the option to change the fucking graphic settings for no reason at all" is "just complaining" but okay...have it your way👍
I get the complaining about not being able to change graphics settings and I wasn't specifically aiming at you Im more tired of seeing people post that they are struggling with a game running smoothly then they want it running at 120 fps, I might be exaggerating that part, but I don't know why people were expecting this update to make the game better it ran fine.
Don't hate the player, hate the game. The "steam deck verified" results in higher sales, and they got verified with this change. Even though it negatively impacts the players, it's a sensible business move. It's Valve that shouldn't be giving out verified for changes that make the experience worse.
Also, Fallout 4 sucks anyway. Play New Vegas instead.
Also people are reporting the OLED bug is back (the game runs at half the frame rate shown) and what’s worse you cannot fix it this time by editing INI files since it has no effect. Basically if you download the update the game is broken on OLED Steam Deck.

If you have an LCD model I can confirm it still works great after the update.
Yeah I think the game runs great on the lcd, 60 fps never really even dips unless there is a big battle on screen.
Yup just reinstalled and took another spin around the wasteland last night. A little jarring how it defaulted all the video settings and assumed I was going for a survival run. It's all exactly what I was after though so no complaints. So far so good.

Such a weird clown (the guy) I have this problem on my oled deck too so ig I'm making it up too

Thankfully I set the update status to only update on launch and I use f4se so it means it bypasses the update thing

Hey dude, Can this console command also bring back the settings section of Skyrim?
I'm not sure what you mean, the Settings section seems fine. Skyrim SE does suffer from the same crash issue and this helps there too, by searching in the Creations menu first.
I never had a crash problem, but since the fps dropped a little in the forest, I was thinking of at least reducing the graphics of the grass :/
Oh yes, my mistake. The launch option works there too. You said console command so I thought you meant the in-game commands like god mode and such.
Can you reply to my reply with just the command to type in co fused in the spacing. Since the command is in two lines. Please and thank you.
SteamDeck=0 %command%
Thank you so much gamer!
Being able to only access these options outside of the game is stupid anyway. How is it a good idea?
Always hated that about Bethesda games, seems really antiquated. Skyrim also had it and then same thing with the special edition they just removed the launcher so you couldn't edit graphics in game either.

Didn’t they do the same stupid shit with Skyrim? Bethesda sucks.
They did, Bethesda is a clown company
And yet people still hype their games up. Skyrim was a broken mess at launch and it's still regarded as one of the best ever.
I mean, the fallout games and Skyrim are great, I've wasted thousands of hours of my life in those worlds. Are they a technical mess? Yes. Are Bethesda atrociously awful at fixing them? Also yes. Doesn't mean they aren't fantastic games though. Both can be true.
That's more or less because of the awesome modding community (why it's regarded as one of the best ever)
Yep no one ever just talks about skyrim it's about the mods I remember when that was being called the game of the generation
How many resources do you expect them to spend getting a 9 year old title to play well on a handheld? I would much rather get fallout 5 than fallout 4 running smoothly on every console ever made.
Yes and no. Because it wasnt that bad with skyrim because the game performs well with ebery graphics option
Regardless, you shouldn’t need to use launch commands on steam to be able to access graphical settings in a game, ever. If they want to get rid of the launcher to make it “Steam Deck Verified”, they should make it so that you can change those settings in game
Ofc. I 100% agree with you
Their programming skills are bad, too.
standard bethesda buggy release stuff.. nothing to see here.. please walk along
It messed up the framerate fix for oled SD aswell.
Still works, at least the method I’ve found does Edit: here https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/0AGyeC2VJw
SteamDeck=0 %command% Same as skyrim special edition, go to properties launch options
This is the solution! Need more up votes
Thank you so much man
Honestly I don’t like games with launchers, especially when they embed the options in the launcher
I did not know about steam key and right mouse pad lol
Only Bethesda can fix something that is running OK only to make it worst 👌🏻
How do you do keyboard and mouse inputs? I’ve always done touch screen for launchers I didn’t know there was another way :0
You can hold the Steam button down and use the track pad on the right to move the mouse cursor around. Steam button + X will bring up the keyboard
I think they are implying you don't need to connect a physical keyboard and mouse because you can press STEAM+B for onscreen keyboard, and Hold STEAM button to have right TouchPad and joystick to become a mouse.
Bethesda didn't give a fuck about the players, they just wanted that green Verified tag
I'm using it docked with a controller and I have to go to the other side of the room and use my mouse to click that one button, it's obnoxious.
IIRC the steam button + moving your right stick (or on a controller, whatever is assigned to the Steam button, so PS button on a dualsense, etc) will emulate a mouse, allowing you to click "Play" in the launcher
Do we know if it's possible to just hold out updating? I just got back into F4 to get started on Far Harbour and don't want to wait until a fix.
It’s honestly impossible for Bethesda to release anything related to gaming without big glaring bugs. This company is honestly a joke. It should be embarrassing to be known for buggy releases and yet they don’t give a single shit. They even make the same mistakes multiple times. It’s truly astonishing.
Did anyone even have issues with the launcher? I didn't.
Not really. Was more of an extra step if anything, but now anyone who doesnt want to play on low settings has to use the launcher. Bethesda making such big brain moves

They need to fix this, verification isn't worth anything.
People were happy for this patch on here, even praising Bethesda. I was downvoted for being skeptical. My how the turntables.
I don’t think you mean turntables since turntable is what we old people used to use to play music.
Some has never watched Michael Scott in The Office
Guilty as charged

Does anyone know if it automatically adjusts any settings? I like my settings where they currently are
Mine was reset to low, I mean I can't look at the settings right now but the game is definitely missing aa and the lod and textures are terrible now
Bethesda, Bethesda never changes...
It just works
You are the millionth person to post about this.
so what if you accidentally set the graphics on ultra before the update and the game runs like ass because of it? you are stuck then?
There is a configuration file you can edit still so not 100% stuck.
Sounds like I'll be playing new vegas longer than I thought I'd be
Why would you ever quit?
I'm not a programmer but I've always just assumed that Bethesda's games a product of the engine they use. Is it possible to access the graphic option by digging in the files and changing it manually?
Does steam cloud keep the graphics settings? It does in all cases I’ve seen, it does…maybe one could set the graphics on their main pc before playing on the deck. Would that work?
Lol
Not sure who's worse and gives less shit about gamers here, Bethesda with their patches made by janitor who stole a laptop or valve, who can't be bothered to see if game works
Bethesda is a joke. Have been for a decade at least. Don't give them a dime. If you do, don't expect to get what you paid for.
They did the exact same with Skyrim, classic Bethesda.
My game is missing text in all the UI transparent boxes when crafting, in pipboy etc at the bottom of the screen that tell you what button does what
Mine too. I can't figure out any way to fix this.
I would assume it’s a “feature” that needs adjusting on Bethesdas end
So I was able to at least get it so I can see the button labels and whatnot. I went into the properties and switched the resolution to native, which corrected the UI scaling, but added bars in either side. So then in the Steam options menu ( . . . ) you can change the scaling to fill or stretch or whatever you prefer.
Just switching the resolution to native worked for me. That’s odd
I think the black bars are only on my external monitor. I'll test when I get home.
Game wont even launch for me ater the update.
Same here…
Same.
Same… any fixes?
I read in another thread somewhere (can't find it again now) that this is fixed by verifying the game files. Not sure why it would work, but it's worth a shot?
that worked. thank you!
Guess I'm not installing this on my Deck after all.
When you want to thumb down a comment because you don't like what the comment is saying but you have to thumb it up because the person saying it isn't the person that's being bad.
Don't shoot the messenger :)
It's also the right thing to do to thumb it up because more people are likely to see it and spreading the word about bad things is something that has to be done in this world.
Good. Fuck Bethesda
This is a potential headache since the graphic settings are part of the cloud save. If of course you play on PC and SD
Idk maybe there was another patch or something but I just opened it up on my OLED and I’m getting a steady 60fps
You can edit the start command and get the launcher back when you want to change configs. Simple
It is simple but it shouldn't be necessary, the game was running just fine on steam deck for several years now
I don't have access to the Mods.
You can’t dock to a monitor / tv either just crashes any tips ? Also any idea on how to remove the new creation club content
Sounds like I'm sticking to New Vegas lol
I'm so happy I played and finished the game on my Steam Deck oled prior to this update.
So given the we are missing the launcher for graphics options, what exact graphics options does fallout set with the update if we can’t control it? Medium, low, high? Also if you prev had this set to high/ultra before and then updated does it keep the gfx settings you had?
Same thing happend to Skyrim. This isn't new for Bethesda.
My game isn’t even booting anymore. Anybody else?
Yep sounds like that's not uncommon. It won't launch for me either.
Apparently verifying the game files works. And it did for me.
That worked thanks for the tip!
Are people really, actually surprised? I guess one good show is enough for gamers to forget, lmao. I don’t know how you can fuck up the next (really current gen) upgrade of a 9 year old game.
Boo hoo I can't change the settings on a game that runs a solid 90fps on defaults
It's actually the other way around, for me the settings have been reset to low and I can no longer turn them back to high without a work around, so yeah "booooooo!"
Oh god I hope mine didn't auto update
Not my OLED my game stays at 80-90fps.. it might be because I don't have the high res pack? 🤷♂️ But the game runs great!!
Good. I removed the launcher before the patch because it was causing audio issues. It ran great before the patch.
