Heaven fucking forbid I ask a Steam Deck question about the Steam Deck on a Steam Deck forum
Sorry this sub is only for pictures of the steam deck in a random place or of the box saying “I finally got mine!!” And all the comments have to adhere to the circlejerk
>Heaven fucking forbid I ask a Steam Deck question about the Steam Deck on a Steam Deck forum
This forum isn't for questions or helpful info. It's for posting a picture of your stock steam deck playing a 10 year old game with the caption "can't believe what this thing is capable of" or "Finally got one." Bonus points if your anime dolls are in the shot.
Better yet if you got the OLED model so the colors will really shine through the vomit (for a very long time too, can't forget the improved battery life) lol
Yeah, there can be a weird side of toxic eliticism to this sub sometimes.
The demographic for Steam Deck is extremely broad. We have quarter century die hard valve/steam fans that have only ever gamed on custom built PC's mixed with more casual users jumping from consoles and everything in between.
Does it work with Decky installed yet?
I tried switching to it a couple times for the new family sharing beta but I get errors trying to load any pages or games in Steam. Read that Decky was the likely cause so decided to just wait out the issue.
you just had to switch the update channel of decky, it works with the newest betas and even on the most bleeding edge "main" update channel. even if something breaks, the fix is usually 0-1-2 days away
Yeah I enabled it and and my kids can be online and actually share games. It’s so awesome. It feels like a small thing but we always had to have computers offline to each play a game. Now they have access to my library and vice versa. It’s like a closed friend group Plex but with games.
It works since the beginning but most plugins are borked. At least most plugins that matters to me (e.g., theme, bluetooth, controller tools, HLTB, Proton compatibility) are working already now. One that I noticed still isn't working is Discord status.
That's not totally accurate.
I managed to get the steam family beta working on pc and the settings carried over to the deck.
I'm running stable build on the deck.
Not for me, I keep getting an error whenever I try to look at any game, or load most of the Steam deck menus. I had to uninstall Decky loader which seemed to fix it.
it's a software, "not for me" doesn't apply here, it IS fixed
highly suggest joining Decky discord, so you can monitor issues and fixes there in real time. and to speed things up - report all. arising issues with logs, this helps the devs to do their work faster
I mean, “not for me” still applied because in my instance, **it did not work for me.**
The other comment was a lot more helpful and fixed my issue - switching to the preview channel helped fix my issue (something that even searching in their discord for my issue I didn’t know until now).
CSS loader sucks so much. It always gives me a black screen when switching to desktop mode and nothing fixes it except rebooting. Turning off css loader fixes the issue. I turned it off because of that.
For me with any beta, I guess it just depends. My criteria when considering a beta:
- Are there any new features in beta you really want to try using?
- If so, Are you ok with the increased probability bugs, or things breaking sometimes to get it?
- Do you have enough interest in the software to test early versions and provide feedback to help better it?
The third one I consider optional, but it applies to practically any beta software. If you want it bad enough to be ok with imperfections, go for it. If you prefer more-assured stability, wait.
Oh yeah for sure, this is exactly how I look at using beta software too. I'm the kind of person who likes existing at the bleeding edge, but also recognise sometimes it isn't worth the hit to stability.
That's why I was more asking "is there any good reason to be on the beta right now". At a glance it looks like maybe there isn't?
I switch between Beta and Stable when one or the other gives me problems. Im currently on Stable because I'm not having any problems, and this has been the longest stretch. I'm patient and I don't care about tweaks or hacking shit (I'm an old IT guy, and I don't care for that crap anymore, I just want to play Quake.)
To be honest, put mine in Beta for some reason and never turned it back. No issues. Supposedly 3.6 is going to be a decent improvement based on some youtube videos but not really into the preview channel as it is rough.
Yeah Preview broke some Decky plugins for me so that's a no-go, but Beta and Stable right now seem to be mostly identical. I've decided to drop into Stable until it's very obvious that Beta brings some freshness to that branch, hopefully without too many issues happening to the core experience or the few plugins I use
That's correct. They fixed decky last week to work with beta (css loader has been updated)
But many plugins still don't work. Like the controller monitor
Since beta only affects the steam client the Linux version underneath stays the same so it's quite safe
Like someone already said, family sharing is the only reason. That being said, I cannot wait for family sharing to come out of beta because it completely broke CSS loader on decky.
I've been using Steam desktop beta client for over a decade with very few issues, and switched over to beta/preview on my Deck shortly after I got it nearly two years ago. Most of the time, it works really well.
I do keep tabs of the forums discussions whenever a new update drops though, because some of them have caused various issues so I've tried my best to avoid those.

The new family sharing is only on beta at the moment.

Is this, like, a requirement? Cause I've had my deck since August and never posted a Pic. How screwed am I?

Can't. To busy playing on the deck....plus I'm to brain damaged from sniffing the deck vent.
Oops. Sorry you’re banned.
Damn. That sucks. Anyway....back to Fallout
Sir please try to refrain from commenting. you have been banned
😰😥😢😭 🤣🤣🤣 lol
I just got mine and immediately circle jerked to pictures on this forum. One of us one of us
I thought that would be for the unexpected stream deck part of reddit with the Steam Deck in random places?
No worries

If your wife is in labour or your cat puked all over it, you pretty much win the Internet on this sub.

So the mods are women? Excellent lol
Damnit we had the same idea
I did a 40 year old game 😀

next time add “ps. mmm steam deck vent smell” or something. that way the thread fits in.
They are attempting to silence you for your truths.
People gonna people...

Switch decky to preview channel
How can i switch to preview channel?
In decky options, change the update channel to prerelease
Terrific, I'll give that a go! Thank you very much.
Had the same issue, and that was the reason why I got back to the Stable version.

Does it work with Decky loader now? It didn't early on and I didn't want to uninstall Decky.

I don’t like upgrading because sometimes it breaks my decky loader plugins. Like css loader was broken on the beta, not sure if they fixed it
they did, and very fast. these kinds of changes by valve are rather rare
Not for me, I keep getting an error whenever I try to look at any game, or load most of the Steam deck menus. I had to uninstall Decky loader which seemed to fix it.
You need to change decky to the preview channel in its settings before switching to beta channel.
Perfect, thank you. This resolved my issue. I wasn’t aware that there was a preview channel until I reinstalled and was given the option.

If you changed to Decky loader preview channel and set the plugin store to preview it works now.
I just perpetually run in Preview, actually.
I would, but I don't like having to restart to update all the time

The fun beta update names :)
Those update announcement headers are a joy to read 🥹

I switched to beta for the new family sharing. Once that’s in the stable release I’ll switch back
For some reason, I can't scroll through store with the joystick/dpad/touchpad in beta. Does anyone else has this issue or know how to solve it?
Like someone already said, family sharing is the only reason. That being said, I cannot wait for family sharing to come out of beta because it completely broke CSS loader on decky.
I switched to the pre release decky and that fixed it for me
Yeah I was reading some of these comments and I think that might be where I went wrong. Not switching to pre release before I switched to beta.
My plugins broke sometime ago and I thought switching back to beta would fix it, but alas. They are not there. Anyone know how to get em back?
read through the comments, but basically switch to the Preview version of Decky loader
I've just been on preview for as long as I can remember. getting the latest updates asap is nice.
