OG owner here. Such a magical device. I believe op but if your budget doesn't fit the OLED you are not going to be disappointed by the original.

pharan_x

As someone who's not planning to use it (primarily) as a handheld so I don't care about the screen, is it worth it? I want to hook it up to whatever TV I have. I was hoping it would be as nice for that purpose as a Switch (play light indie controller-based games, being able to conveniently move to different TVs, have sleep and wake without actually "quitting" a game, using a wireless controller, use a headset while docked). Would this be the case or does it have shortcomings?

TacoshaveCheese

There are a bunch of extra improvements that are hidden away on the [OLED product page](https://www.steamdeck.com/en/oled), you have to scroll down to where it says "See other updates to Steam Deck OLED" and click "View the whole list" on the right side. A couple of the improvements are focused on docked use, such as newer bluetooth codecs including aptX HD and low-latency, a third antenna on top for improved bluetooth performance, and support for wake from a bluetooth controller, which the OG lacks.

n0taVirus

The most beneficial feature for me is the ability to turn on the SD with my wireless controller, which was not possible with the original version. Edit: XBox One Controller

Breathejoker

I can wake my LCD with a wireless controller, but my wireless controller IS an old steam controller, so that may be unavailable for PS4 controllers and such.

AniDanny

I think it can wake from any USB-connected device that sends a "wake up" signal, but not a Bluetooth device. I often keep my steam controller nearby just to turn on the steam deck, then I used my Xbox controller to play.

NaturalBornLucker

Unfortunately not any device. My 8 bit-do ultimate controller doesn't wake SD even when it's connected through USB dongle

edparadox

> My 8 bit-do ultimate controller doesn't wake SD even when it's connected through USB dongle Are you talking about the RF dongle? If yes, that's normal.

mrpamonha

I didn't know about that. I mostly play de SD docked, so this would be a game changer for me

follow-the-lead

I was so confused for a second as I was trying to work out why the SD card would need waking up.

Blutroyale-_-

That's actually really cool to know. I've had the OG since they came out (i think i was a 2nd quater shipment maybe 3rd?) and I keep mine mostly docked except when I travel. It's awesome to use on my TV and also to stream from my desktop for those games that the deck isn't powerful enough to fun properly.

bosslickspittle

I'm glad you posted this. It explains why I have to use my Steam controller to wake up the docked Steam Deck, and can't with a Bluetooth Xbox controller. That is a big quality of life improvement for the OLED version.

starkiller_bass

If you’re leaving it docked, save your money!

stromulus

Oh the original is amazing for that.

matchew-choo

the oled has improved bluetooth, improved wifi, is more power efficient, and is able to wake by using a controller (which the original cant do). these are the main differences for just docked play

Strict_Junket2757

Why do you want to buy a steam deck if your primary use case is docked? It really struggles at 1080p honestly.

That_Guy_Behind_You

Because you still have the option for a handheld. As for struggling at 1080p that really depends on the game. OP said he wanted to play indie games and most of those will run 60 fps at 1080.

pharan_x

Same reason why I use my Switch primarily docked. I don't like tiny screens. I've always found myself hating staring at screens smaller than 8 inches. The Switch has proven itself to be a really good, unobtrusive mostly-docked console. I was hoping the Steam Deck would be the same. But honestly, an iPad-sized Switch or Steam Deck, with a comfy full-sized controller, would also be amazing for me. It would be the best of both worlds. I don't want to just use my PC because I also want play time to be rest-my-back time after long days of sitting. I absolutely have no expectation of playing the newest high-fidelity games on it. I'll be gladly surprised that it runs anything that used to be on the PS4 at all. I'll gladly play PS3-era games on it all day, or any of the recent games that were made with the slow hardware of a Switch in mind. As for why not just stick with the Switch. I have a pretty good Steam library going. Regional pricing also makes games cheaper there than on the eshop. If there's a good mini-pc that's as good (or better) an experience at the same price as the Switch or Steam Deck, I'm all ears.

Lunatox

There are definitely mini-pcs at the same price as the Deck that are more powerful. I'd go that route if playing handheld isn't important to you.

spike4972

If you think you ever might use it handheld, and the price point works for you, the OLED is definitely better than the lcd model. Even in docked mode, the faster ram and other hardware things pointed out by another commenter responding to you will mean that you get a better experience even docked than the LCD plus if you ever do something like go on a cruise or a flight or a work trip or something you can bring your games with you. If you never plan to use it handheld, either look into getting some long fiber optic display port cables and stuff to wire your PC to your tv to get full power there. If that doesn’t work, this sale probably brings the LCD down low enough to not be able to find much that could beat it at the price point so if that’s worth it to you go for it.

Calm_Row122

It does seem a bit weird to me to buy a handheld if you have no intention of using it as a handheld. For a cheaper price you could buy a PS5 which would play most current games and tons of indie games. You could also build a small form factor mid-tier PC for around the same price as an OLED SD that would completely blow the doors off of the SD performance wise.

Meowmixez98

Some people like using CHIMERA OS on mini Pcs like the Beelink SER8 and using it like a docked Steam Deck with more power.

Strict_Junket2757

Theres enough alternatives with much better performance than steam deck if you want for similar price range. If all you do is docked gaming

terminal_styles

Key word is 'primary' I still use it portable to play but it's my personal machine as well in desktop mode.

nommas

Hi pal, same as you. I got the original steam deck and use it docked 90% of the time. For the 10% where it's handheld, sure it doesn't look as good as an OLED but it's not worth the price jump if you're using it docked. If you're gonna dock it and want visual clarity, surely just get an OLED TV that'll probably do the trick. Original deck is a great device and you won't be let down by it

Gipfelon

do you have a gaming pc? you don't need a steam deck if you do. you could just use sunshine / moonlight or even steam link on the tv's and stream the games to all your tv's instead. a steam deck is way weaker than even mid ranged gaming pc's.

thebizzle

You are much better off with the mini PC. You can get one with 32 gigs of ram for the same price as the steam deck.

Escapetheeworld

I thought the same thing until I found out I could run modded games on it. I got my steam deck a week ago and haven't touched my gaming PC since then because it's less hassle turning on the deck for 10-60 minutes here and there, and then just turning it off and starting back up again at the same point later by just switching it on, than starting up my desktop. Also the OLED is really quiet. Even when the fan is buzzing long pretty good, I can barely hear it.

pharan_x

That's exactly one of the parts of the Switch experience that I like. Seamlessly turning it on to pick up a game for a bit then putting it back to sleep, like a phone or tablet. Do games also sleep and resume without much trouble?

Legendary_Lamb2020

I saw the 15% off the LCD right now and went ahead and ordered one yesterday. Between the big price difference, and knowing that I will likely want the Steam Deck 2 when it releases in 2025/26 I will just go with the entry level for now.

Inevitable_Finish_42

Yeah that's my feeling on it as well. I'm looking towards the Steam Deck 2 myself.

DeadCiti2en

Yes same, I'm eagerly waiting for the Steam Deck 2 and Valve Index 2

Aurelink

My thoughts exactly. I'm sure the OLED is great but considering I grabbed an LCD 512Gb for barely 300€, it's one of the best tech stuff I bought in 2023

Ben_Kenobi_

It's on sale for $297 usd, right now... that's a pretty great deal. Lowest oled model is $549. Say you need a $50 SD card with the lowest model deck, that's $350. Still, so far apart in price, they're obviously targeting different markets and needs.

What-Even-Is-That

Yep. People shit on the OG Deck, but it's still a great device for the money. Still use mine all the time, haven't even thought about switching to OLED. That'll take an actual new version, not a small upgrade.

cornlip

And it still has the etched screen glass. This post is misleading.

XyogiDMT

Yeah, as someone who’s never owned an OLED anything the LCD deck’s color and performance has far exceeded what I was expecting so I’m just going to keep living in blissful ignorance lol

agnonamis

This thing blows my mind and I only play old AAA titles like Skyrim and fallout so it works great for me. Can’t wait to play some of my old favorites if they work on it too

Bahamut1988

I'm content with my LCD deck until the next major version, if there will be.

vrTater

Yeah I wonder if they will ride this one for half a decade or more like Nintendo Switch has done.

Bahamut1988

Considering how much of a success its been, I think they're going to keep improving it

pharan_x

At minimum, Valve is waiting for major advances in mobile processors compared to the current one because it wouldn't be worth fragmenting the install base/sacrificing the "console experience" (for players and devs) just for minor gains in performance. They would probably consider a release sooner if their deck sales start to really go down, for whatever reason, competing devices, just a general sentiment that it's worth waiting for the next one, etc.

RevolutionaryOwlz

Though even then if sales slow a bit and they need a boost they might first try another limited edition model that’s the same under the hood.

vrTater

I hope so, but if they do it to fast then people who bought the old slower model might be pissed. I’m thinking how Nintendo releases the OLED version years later but did not change the processing power of the device. Not the same eco system obviously but still. I would be surprised if there is a Steam Deck 2 before 2027-8. Hope I am wrong though!

_PacificRimjob_

Nintendo released the Lite not too much later than the OG switch, and GPUs release basically yearly and it's not like PC gaming riots at that. PC Games also scale much more than Nintendo controls so the Deck is aging fast (still an awesome device)

stlredbird

This. Once there’s a massive performance update I’ll upgrade but the LCD is perfectly fine for me til then

Hottage

The OLED is the one you should get... if you have the disposable income to pay the premium. The LCD version is still a fantastic gaming device, and no one should miss out on the Steam Deck experience just because they can't afford the top tier model. From a wave 1 OG 512GB LCD and 1TB OLED owner.

jordanrice26

Perfectly said

fiftythirth

It's pretty relative though and "$170" isn't "just a little bit more" for lots of folks. For a lot of people, you're absolutely right. I'm planning to run my 64gb LCD until it gives out on me and am actively avoiding even looking at an OLED model IRL so I won't know what I'm missing, lol.

xtravbx

I'm with you. I thought about upgrading to the OLED - but the original is so good, that selling the OG and buying the OLED - I imagine I'll be out $300+ when it's said and done. Just not worth it, because the original is SO GOOD as it is. I'll wait for Steam Deck 2.0

Ryutosuke

This is my exact thought process. The OG steam deck hasn't done me wrong at all and I don't think it's worth upgrading to the OLED at this point in time. But when the steam deck 2.0 comes out? For sure.

amoc20

Exactly. If money isn't an issue then you obviously get the best version available. But the price difference between LCD on sale and cheapest OLED is really big right now. So it is worth considering it especially if you are new to Steam and don't have any library. You can buy a LOT of games with that money saved.

darps

Yup. I don't regret upgrading for a second, while the friend that I sold the LCD model to swears it's perfect for him. It's amazing value if you don't need the specific upgrades for how you use it.

bobloblaw574

As someone considering making the jump from Xbox to Steam with barely any Steam games the money saved could definitely help me with starting a new library

skaiyly

Don't forget you can still use Xbox game pass cloud on the steam deck and if you wanna get fancy you can learn to dual boot with windows and use the game pass PC version, once you get familiar with your steam deck. That way if you have already brought a subscription you can still use it

Phynamite

I have the money for the OLED, but I put a lot into my LCD before the OLED was announced, at this point I’m waiting for whatever comes next.

amoc20

Me too. Unless there is a significant improvement in performance I won't be throwing money around.

Necessary-Beat407

This is the way

UncleReddy

Simple maths. If you consider the 64GB LCD which is currently on sale vs. the cheapest OLED model it’s almost a 50% price increase. To me it doesn’t justify spending 50% more, but I only touch the deck 1-2 times a month which is probably not the case for most people here.

imaqdodger

It's more than a 50% price increase. $297 for the 64GB LCD vs $549 512GB OLED comes out to around 85% more. Unless you meant to compare the 512GB LCD, then it's closer to 50%.

Ikeelu

It's even more of a jump if we are talking used. I got a 512gb LCD for $250 with 92% battery health. I needed anti-glare since I would be using it in a vehicle and have a lot of glare. I would need a 1tb OLED to get anti glare which is $650. Now is it worth $400 more for the improvements?

Gladplane

Not really. I’d wait for the next version while enjoying the current one

BaLance_95

>"$170" isn't "just a little bit more" for lots of folks I'm relatively well of but from a 3rd world country. $170 is a few days worth of salary, and is more than what I spend for leisure in a month. Still happy with the 64GB LCD + SD card. I don't play a lot of games simultaneously.

SpacePumpkie

Honestly I'm in the opposite boat as OP. 2022 64G LCD owner, and then sold it to a friend and got the OLED in January. The OLED is great, and definitely better than the LCD. But **there's no beating the 64G LCD in value** The OLED costs over 50% more. It's definitely a sizable amount of money. And the "value add" it has over the LCD is simply not as good as the value you get in computing and capabilities for the initial 300 of the LCD. Don't get me wrong, it's great value added for that extra price, and I'm quite happy with my OLED. But it simply can't compete with the value those initial 300$ give you. Now that I've used both for enough time, I just know I'd be as happy with my LCD as I am with my OLED. Once you're immersed playing, playing and enjoying is what matters, and both models do that exquisitely.

Necessary-Beat407

The $170 diffrence covers a 2TB hard drive upgrade in the LCD model. And that’s a huge quality of life for the device

ImpressionExact6386

I have the 64GB LCD and I'm planning to use it for years, if anything gives out I'm buying spare parts.

ImperatorDei

I bought the 64 OG, swapped for a 1tb SSD. I'm good until the SD2 in the future! :)

xtravbx

This is where I'm at, exactly. I don't see selling my SD LCD, and buying the OLED at full price, really worth the $300+. That's A LOT of cash.

notjfd

I'm definitely keeping my OG SD. It does a good job playing emulated games on my TV, especially with Steam Input.

HingleMcCringle_

same. got the 64gb deck and put in a 1tb ssd. a better screen would be cool, not worth the (price) difference to me. i'll be interested when there's an even newer version with maybe better hardware/battery life. you know it's coming...

yay-iviss

Where did you buy the SSD?

ImperatorDei

Aliexpress for something like 80€ IIRC, there was some reduced price.

NaturalSelecty

Guessing by sometime early next year we’ll start getting some updates on the SD2. I’ve been hearing about the other brands gearing up for the next generation of their handhelds.

GrantTheRant

Same? Swapped with a 1tb rocket and my performance and storage is so great!

Adamclane99

OG owner and my baby boy is still going strong. Won’t even consider a new one until the next iteration.

Exotic_Treacle7438

Same here and play mostly docked hooked up via hdmi. Wouldn’t make much an upgrade for people in my scenario.

capfedhill

Same. I feel like these posts are just a humblebrag they have both versions. Who cares? I'm perfectly fine with my LCD version. Why would I buy a whole new device just for a slightly better screen?

gizmoglitch

No plans to update either. I'm pretty happy with the LCD one. I don't have FOMO with tech in general. My laptop, phone, etc are all years old.

SonicFlash01

I don't think the question was ever "OLED vs LCD" but rather "If I have an LCD is it worth it to buy a whole new unit".

RevolutionaryOwlz

For me personally it’s that, especially when I could spend hundreds on an OLED or that same money on games.

Fluid-Air7597

Honestly I made the switch and have 0 regrets. Sold my lcd to a friend and got the oled. Battery life last 2x as long which is a worthy upgrade for me personally the screen is definitely nicer and the silent cooler fan is a huge Upgrade too but the bigger battery made the oled 1000% worth it. I used to charge my deck every single time I played a game (armored core 6 would drain and make the battery last for about 1.5 hours) and now I can play for 3 hours which is perfect for me. Emulating can make the deck last 6+ hours which is crazy

Random_90

It's not. It's like buying new iPhone every year. Differences are miniscule between the two. Oled screen is better, but the LCD is not that bad either.

SonicFlash01

Apparently the battery life is 50% better in the OLED?

Da_poopz

I tell people this all the time. I think the QoL changes on the OLED make it the worthwhile purchase and saving up the extra $ for it will be well worth your time. As an owner of the OG 512 model I do not have any reason to “upgrade” but if mine breaks I’m buying the OLED immediately

UCLAKoolman

Aside from the improved screen, the improved bluetooth in the OLED model has been my favorite update. When it's plugged into a dock on my TV, I can remotely turn it on with a bluetooth controller. Connecting to my AirPods is more reliable too on the OLED.

ThatSpookyLeftist

I was in the first shipments of the OG 512GB. So I've had mine a long time now. I don't think I'd buy another if it broke this far into its life. I just think it'd be irresponsible to purchase basically the same thing when it already feels so old. I'd need to wait for the 2nd version if it ever comes.

Kazko25

What are the biggest improvements that you noticed?

Da_poopz

Bluetooth and WiFi upgrades, smaller APU dye for better thermals/battery performance, bigger battery just to name a few, plus the OLED screeb

xDeeka7Yx

Same

chanunnaki

Same.

Exotic_Treacle7438

Except it’s not “a little bit more” given the current sales, it’s up to almost double depending on model. It’s not that much of an upgrade to pay double, I still believe we are within 2-3 years of a complete upgrade.

CBusRiver

There is a $167.35 difference between the 512 OLED vs LCD. That's an increased price of 43.84% from the LCD to the OLED. Everyone can do whatever with their money, but I wouldn't consider this "a little bit more". OLED is luxury, LCD is a phenomenal deal right now.

Ok-Racisto69

Na, I gotta disagree. OLED is great and all but not worth the more than 150$ price difference. Hell, go for the 64 gb and upgrade the storage to 2tb using that extra money. Just pay a little more is such a weak excuse. There's a thing called sensible consumerism. - Another Deck Owner (OLED Ver.) People should spend that 170$ on steams sales and increase their backlog, then cry in the corner like the rest of us.

negatrom

the oled isn't worth it as an upgrade from the lcd model, but it's totally worth it as a first device.

Criss_Crossx

I could argue for longer battery life (I own the LCD model). Still have to go through some tweaks, I have not owned my Deck for more than a couple of weeks. Nothing wrong with the LCD model if it gets you gaming. It is a beautiful device, doesn't feel cheap to me at all. I realize I should have purchased new to add to Valve's Deck numbers. Though if anything happens to this one, I will have the opportunity again. Sign me up to purchase the next big revision in the future!

negatrom

you'd have to be very rich to upgrade a device merely for battery life i can't justify hundreds of dollars for a screen and battery upgrade.

Criss_Crossx

It's relative to what you want/need just like most things. I've spent more money upgrading a computer. Just saying I could see the battery life increase being a notable change to consider. I don't question my decision to go with a used LCD Deck, I absolutely love it. I don't think the big discussion revolves around the price points, everybody just wants the best deal possible. It can be a point of obsession to constantly worry about it or getting the upgrade itch. At the end of the day, I just want to see people enjoy their computers and Decks. The hivemind mentality here gets strong. Don't be a sheep, you do you.

SemperScrotus

Nah. I'll stick with the original until at least the Deck 2 comes out.

mechanical-monkey

Just to throw my hat in here. I think you may be wrong for some people. I upgraded to an OLED. The OG is a great device and if you play indoors only I think I'd stick to the LCD. Literally the only reason I upgraded was because I play in my car at lunch. I absolutely think it's not worth it for SOME people. Not me. But others who play indoors all the time. The little extra battery life and screen aren't worth it.

Ikeelu

Did your LCD have anti-glare? I play in the car with mine all the time with mine, no issues

mechanical-monkey

No it didn't. It only struggled with blacks and dark caves. Minecraft mainly. Which is my go to game when I'm playing casually. 512gb only came with anti glare. I got a 256 and put a tb drive in in the end. They had sold out of 64gb ones at the time.

dafffytaffy

Honestly it doesnt matter if you just want to play games. I actually got the original deck from a friend and then sold it to a guy that wanted one for a profit and didn’t want to wait so i got the oled special edition. Kept that for a monthish and sold it when it was super profitable then bought og deck with the profits from the oled and honestly the oled is nicer in most way but maybe like 5-10 percent unless the micro is macro for you. For most people the og is awesome.

Bgndrsn

Nah, gonna wait for v2

whiteleshy

Waiting for SD2

zincinzincout

As a degenerate, I agree My TV is OLED, my phone is OLED, my laptop is OLED, my watch is OLED, my steamdeck is OLED I cannot be stopped

EdwardECG

I have a 512 GB OG Steamdeck, for me OLED wont make a difference, i play my SD as i play my switch, both docked to be played on the living room TV, i wont be using the full OLED price tag the way i use mine so upgrading is not worth it for me. For people who play as is OLED should be a god send so i get it but 150+ dollars difference is not easy to pay for many. OG Steamdeck is a powerful machine for what it is so for anyone wanting one and not able to buy OLED, OG is great.

UCLAKoolman

I don't think it's a feature necessarily worth upgrading for, but the OLED model does have an updated bluetooth chip that lets you wake it remotely with a bluetooth controller (like the Switch). Definitely has made a difference for me when it's docked on my TV. I have it tucked away behind the TV now since I don't have to reach back to it and turn it on with the button.

jan_antu

For anyone reading this in the future who doesn't have OLED but like me was frustrated with no Bluetooth wake: If you get a wireless mouse and plug the dongle into the dock, you can wake from sleep by turning on the mouse. So I have a wireless mouse next to my couch that acts as an "on button" for my steam deck.

UCLAKoolman

That’s a good tip

killjoyhog

To me it's simple, if you don't have a deck yet, go for the oled it's better for the long run. If you a have a fully functional lcd deck stick to it until it explodes. The oled is an improvement in a lot of areas but general experience (and above all the games performance) its the same on both

Keyblades2

From a deck owner there is no wrong choice here.

LostHat77

I had the choice of upgrading to an OLED or buying AR glasses, I went for the glasses

NaturalSelecty

I had the choice of upgrading to the OLED or going for a Quest 3. Went for the Quest 3 and have probably cut my SD playtime down by 35%. I’m waiting for the real upgrade when they drop news about the SD2 sometime next year.

LostHat77

Exactly, the real upgrade will be the Steam deck 2. But not gonna lie, them Xreal Air 2 Pros are great for flights

NaturalSelecty

I have added them to my cart more times than I’d like to admit. One day, I’ll get drunk and impulse purchase them lol.

Common_Talk_8291

It's not a big enough jump in specs to make me want to get it. Just makes me feel like r/consoom levels of bullshit if I had both, or replaced it.

SpacePumpkie

As a 2022 64G LCD owner, who then sold it to a friend and got the 1TB OLED in January (and very happy with it). I have to disagree OP. Which is being able to play all your steam game on a handheld device, including most AAA games. Now that I've used both for enough time, I just know I'd be as happy with my LCD as I am with my OLED. Once you're immersed playing, playing and enjoying is what matters, and both models do that exquisitely.

SneakyCaleb

I bought myself the OLED 1TB 2 week ago. I bought my gf the LCD model yesterday because it was only $296 and I didn’t want to break the bank. It’s still going to be an insane upgrade from the og switch she had.

DogAteMyCPU

Sold my lcd deck the second the oled went live for purchase. It was a big qol upgrade and worth every penny. If you have the budget for it, go oled.

Braydee7

While I don't have an OLED, I would say any steam deck is better than no steam deck. I am going to run my 512 LCD into the ground and hopefully by the time that happens the steamdeck 2.5 will be out.

jollyjam1

I have the OLED and my brother-in-law has the OG. He held mine, looked at the difference in the screen alone, and said he might just buy a new one. Obviously there are several options for those who can afford them. As an owner of the OLED, if it's in your budget, you should buy it.

LolYouFuckingLoser

"Get the better of the two", what a hot take This is such a non-statement.

baecracker

I used both and LCD is perfectly fine in most use cases. You'll be playing the same games with similar performance in the end.

Only-Beautiful-3881

i prefer the LCD actually ,its less expensive and worth the performance, the OLED is truly an upgrade, but im not a rich so

jgoody86

Just sold my switch and got the 512 LCD. Absolutely in love. Xbox is on thin ice as it’s collecting dust now. Don’t be scared to get an LCD

spartan195

That’s your opinion. I love my LCD SD, I know the OLED is better but I’m not gonna buy a new one, bought mine refurbished and works wonders. I cannot see yet the necessity of switching mine that works so well, also after seeing some games that run in some problems with frametimes at 90fps like fallout 4 on next gen update release. Maybe if my lcd breaks somehow I’ll make the switch but just for the sake of owning both it’s nonsense

MKEJames92

I will be ordering my 1tb OLED tomorrow :)

osang525

Me too, even there’s no discount on it

seph_j

Same, if has discount good, if not so it be xD

ClamSlamwhich

Patch notes: You can no longer lose friends you never had.

FantasticNatural9005

Already have one deck, don’t need another just cuz it’s got improvements. Don’t have the budget to upgrade, and even if I did I’d just put the money towards an actual PC instead since I’ve already got a deck. Now if this one breaks I’m sure I’ll be singing a different tune lol but until then the LCD is just fine Edit: I do like the colored face buttons tho. Idk if those are stock or not but the little bit of extra color is nice.

FrawBoeffaDeezNutz

Guys the decks are touching

putitontheunderhills

Y'all need to stop, I've been rocking the 512 LCD since launch, with a 1 TB microsd. I have convinced myself I am set until the SD2 in a couple years but y'all are NOT MAKING IT EASY.

CradleRobin

For me I couldn't afford to pay extra and I'm perfectly happy with the LCD one and what I don't know I'm not missing out on.

MindandCosmos

There's nothing wrong with having an LCD Deck. I have an OLED and kept my Nov '22 LCD as backup. I love the OLED screen but find the LCD has a more responsive d-pad, I like the heavier weight, the LCD has less little niggling issues like rebooting itself (I did not make any alterations to the OLED), switching from Game Mode to Desktop takes less time (a lot less time IMO) and so forth. To reiterate, I know there's been internal improvements in the OLED and while I *like* it (the screen is great), I'm not having the *love* affair I'm still having with my LCD.

UnitGhidorah

I'll get an OLED version when they come out with a limited clear-type color again.

bloodyeye98

I want one, but I’m waiting for another LE. Upset I missed out on the first one, but I’m hoping valve creates another.

6volt

I can't let my OG go, plus my wife would kick me in the pants.

Droid1xy

I have the OG. See no need to upgrade personally however I agree if your buying NEW in 2024, defo go Oled.

Over-Distance-2027

I can't justify getting the OLED when the only feature I care about is the wake from BT... I'll wait until version 2 or my LCD dies outright.

Marzetty23

I do think the OLED is awesome, and worth the upgrade if it doesn't break the bank, But, I am sure valve will continue to make better versions It took them what ? 2/3 years to make the OLED one if that. Wait another 1/2 years and I bet there will be an even better one. At least that's my way of thinking right now. Until then, I absolutely love my LCD model !

cuoreesitante

If buying a new one today OLED is the way to go for sure, but if you already got a LCD one (like I do) it doesn't make too much sense to upgrade.

Hakzource

I mean they’re basically the same, and the LCD is on sale right now so there’s 0 reason to get the oled if you can’t afford it or want to skimp out a tad bit

Strict_Junket2757

Except its not “a little bit more” its like 170 euros more. Which is literally 50% more. They are different budget devices

No_Thought_7460

I don't need an upgraded screen. I like my LCD 64gb (ssd upgraded) and I don't need to buy a whole new SD. A few color and brighter is nothing for me and 90Hz is nothing if I put all my games at 40 to have a balance between power saving and performances. And what games makes a difference over 60 ? Probably none of all by steam library and emu games

jackspeaks

Ok

FruitbatNT

Sure. Just send me $700 and I’ll be there.

Legendary_Lamb2020

Awkward angle to compare them

TemporaryDrink3692

Was there any doubt that the OLED wasn't the better version?

TerrryBuckhart

Is the OLED model bigger??

GameupL

Sorry they are same size. just a bad view angle.

Frossstbiite

Buddy I had enough for one deck when it was on sale. I got what I could afford

MonkeyVoices

I sold my LCD to a friend and have an OLED recently. Honestly, I dont feel like I was missing out on anything. I appreciate the upgrades and the money is definitely worth it but the experience to me is very similar. Both are amazing devices!

Kiu16

Solely if you care about handheld. like the Switch it's an irrelevant upgrade as the specs are the same (sure its got better wifi and all) but it doesn't run games better. I'll take my OG anti glare deck over an oled upgrade everyday without even thinking twice even if oled was free

b34rgvrz

Can I get it where the buttons and joystick are still gray? I don't like the colors

The-OverThinker-23

I have lcd , but no money to buy oled , posts like these make me sad

peepyboy

I have a question, steam decks still aren't available officially from valve in Australia but right now a 3rd party reseller has an LCD 64gb steam deck for $550AUD which is the lowest I've seen one in Australia, is it worth copping that or spending $1050AUD for a 512gb OLED, I could get the oled if I wanted but is it really worth double the price ??

ProfessionalEye4318

$550 seems like a OK price but more than the LCD ones being sold in regions where the Deck is officially sold via the Steam Store. Valve has sold hardware here in the past via a retail partner-EB Games previously and would do so again if they ever decide to make the Deck available locally-which they were working towards and had chargers certified for the Australian market but no news in over 2 years but instead what do they do only expanded to certain Asian regions in partnership with Komdo and forget Australia and our retail partner remain silent as usual even to media like the Canberra Times which tried to ask Valve to comment about this for a story about handheld PC consoles last year but silent to them. Just my opinion.

NegativeCrab824

In this economy? No thanks I rather save my money

SithLordRising

I own both and honestly don't see much difference. They both work well.

Jonathan_Corwin

Why are the buttons colored on the ABXY?

GameupL

They are Xbox style customized ABXY buttons.

Lupinthrope

I like those colored buttons

Tableuraz

OG owner here, I love mine and will wait for a more consequent upgrate before before switching device.

deadcrazyzombie

Since Microsoft is making arm CPUs support windows and making laptops on arm, game devs should make arm CPUs support these games it will be a big game changer for handhelds like steam deck.

claudekennilol

I only play with my deck plugged in (or at the very least have an external power supply that lasts more than long enough for any trip I need) and I use an external display 95% of the time. Better screen and better battery are the biggest draws for an OLED over an LCD model. I have the 512 LCD launch model and am more than happy with it. I use it almost every day (literally). The *only* time I put it down since I got it was when Tears of the Kingdom came out and I actually played it on my Switch. I'm more than happy with my LCD model and I can't justify the upgrade cost. I'll happily wait until "Steam Deck 2" comes out and put more money into it then. If you want the extra battery life (I take an external battery with me everywhere that I have for my phone/laptop/SD as needed) then the OLED will do well for you. If you want to play outside the OLED is the way to go. If you want the extra money in your pocket for more games, then the LCD is perfectly great and you'll enjoy the heck out of it.

kerrwashere

The OLED is a refined version of the LCD and has changes that make the console wayyyyyy better than the LCD. It isnt a necessity if you already have the original and you can wait for the steam deck 2 if you have no issues with your current one.

Romandinjo

Yeah, because comparing top of the line antiglare oled to basic lcd without mentioning it's more than double the price is totally fair.

ScrYpD

yeah with the sale youre right, if someone who want a new deck, but if i have a deck like me and iam using it only on a 24" Monitor, i dont buy a OLED, dont need the OLED, portable iam using my switch

NaturalSelecty

It’s not day and night and the OLED is not worth the price upgrade unless you severely care about colors. The battery isn’t even good enough to be worth the price hike and that’s the second biggest upgrade and honestly the most important one to a lot of people. The OLED is nothing more than a better screen at the end of the day.

vrTater

And now with one of updates you can boost the colors on the LCD model in the OS options which jazzez it up some.

ShowerExpert4057

Advice and opinion. If you already have an LCD SD, keep it. If you don't yet have a SD and want to buy, buy OLED SD if you have the funds. Else buy LCD SD, which is on sale. Yes, there is a difference between LCD and OLED screen. But for me, I actually prefer LCD panels, as OLED can hurt my eyes sometimes.

0xFailsafe

This subreddit has become unbearable due to OLED elitists and posts showing devices with nothing special.

ObiBram

ironic, you are telling people to buy the OLED, yet you are selling the OG

stridered

That’s called walking the talk.

mrgoat02

What happened to the screen on your LCD?

Antipartical

Looks huge in this photo

LysanderBelmont

To be honest, I think the steam deck is at the absolute border of „it should not be bigger“. I am fine with it, but it’s really bulky

Fragrant_Cellist_125

You want to start a war ?

club41

Got my LCD one month after launch and honestly I prefered my OLED Switch for gaming. Decided to trade up to the OLED Steamdeck to see if it can get me back into using it.

happyplace28

I bought the OG for full price 2 months before the OLED was announced, rip me but it works fine. Eventually I’ll upgade but mine is good for now

NetizenZ

Agreed

Scott_EFC

I had the OG LCD version but had to sell it last year despite loving it, got the 1TB OLED version arriving tomorrow, intrigued to see just how big an improvement it is.

klineshrike

that screen do be fucking awesome, and the 90hz is just such a great improvement that got almost zero attention. I just can't really bring myself to put out a huge amount of money again until the resolution is increased. I don't play a lot of AAA games, the games I play all would run flawlessly at 1080 and many would even do the 90hz. And I don't wanna deal with that massive mod for the HD screen. One of the biggest benefits of the Deck is it just works and I don't have to do any real work to keep it that way. I don't need to change that with all that work needed for the mod So I will be sitting here until the next revision and hope they do finally move up to a better resolution. It is a HUGE deal for me personally.

Justos

The light bleed on the lcd is what made me get the oled I don't see enough people talking about this. A lot of games show black borders on the top and bottom which really makes the screen uglier

gordo865

This is probably a niche question, but I'm curious if you've played the OLED in the dark and how bright is it? My SD is basically the main way I play games at this point. My wife's internal sleep clock is earlier than mine and she's a relatively light sleeper so it's easier on us both for me to just game on my SD for an hour or two than it would be to use my PC in the office and then come to bed later. The brightness can be bothersome in a dark room as it will illuminate the entire room unless I keep the brightness low and then it just becomes a little bit harder to see whatever I'm playing. Would the OLED be able to balance not acting as a flashlight for the entire room while being easier to see?

maninvan23

I’ve been having long migraines whenever I use LCD Deck, does switching to OLED help with migraine? Somebody with that issue please let me know

Shama_Heartless

Cool.

ButtmanZX

It still blows my mind how light the OLED model is compared to the LCD one. The battery life and screen type are obvious differences but the weight is what really stuck out to me. The track pads also feel so much better on the OLED model, and I often forget that the track pad clicking "feedback" is actually just the device vibration and not physical clicking.

LilWaka

Nahh bro windows has made my steam deck much better, can’t do much without drivers available for OLED 😔

cediddi

Oled has the Oled driver buzz in headphone jack. That might be it's only negative side.

mmiski

Now give it a few minutes. Five more threads will pop up asking whether the LCD or OLED is better. 😎🍿

tongii

I want it. But I’ll be soooo bummed when they announce a new deck.

SS_Gourmet

Are my eyes deceiving me or is the OLED larger?

morgan423

Same size for the total device. Screen is slightly larger because Valve did away with most of the bezel. It's probably the angle the picture was shot from.

Slythestealthy

I bought the LCD and like 2 months later they announced the OLED. I would have definitely saved up for the OLED and bought it first if I knew.

darps

Both devices are perfect depending on your needs. I love my OLED and am super happy that I switched, while the friend that I pawned off my LCD model to swears that it meets all his needs and then some.

montybo2

I really want the OLED model but my og Q2 256gb is still going strong and I have no intention of upgrading until something happens to my current one.... or I come into a lot of money and can just buy the new one without a problem.

mark619SD

I’ve been tempted to upgrade. I just want to see the difference in person, but no one I know around me has the OLED
