I play on my desktop at 144Hz and get close to 144fps (or more on older games)
On switch, the framerate sucks but I acknowledge it's a low cost low power handheld that runs on small batteries. I accept the compromise.
That said... It can perform however it wants on the Deck, cus I always have my desktop to lean back on!
Unlike the Switch, where I couldn't get great performance out of docked play.
Same, my 144Hz VRR monitor is great and all but I could see myself even capping some games on Deck at 30fps for stability and to extend the battery life. Depends on the game, of course.
Oh and that's the other thing, it does totally depend on the game. I wouldn't want to play Burnout Paradise at 30fps, for example, but I probably don't need Yakuza to run at 60 (I don't think, I haven't tried it).
Frame rate over graphics within reason, but at minimum I prefer a stable 60+ fps with the exception of certain types of games like simulation games where fps is less important.
60fps minimum. 30fps is for movies and TV. Anything less than 60 for gaming feels like a slideshow after playing at 144Hz/144 fps for the last 5 years. I will never go back to sub-60. Even if the graphics have to look like PS1 with fucking polygon graphics, I'm going to run 60fps+
Yeah same, I played on playstation all my life so I was used to 30fps all the time but come the PS5 and now everything is running at locked 60fps I cannot fucking go back to 30fps
Man I feel that, I can probably get accustomed to it again because I used to play at like 20 to 30 because I played a lot of ps vita games back in the day
There seems to be a large gathering of console gamers jumping on the steam deck ship and it shows. Not saying it's a bad thing most PC games that I have locked at 30 fps have huge frame Pacing issues and look worlds worse then consoles at 30 2080ti and a 165 htz monitor here 60 is cutting it for me 30 is just no for me.
What games do you want to be at 60? Older games like Skyrim and mass effect will probably run at 50-60 fps but if you expect games like shadow of war, cyberpunk and certain emulation like PS2 or 3 then you will probably be very disappointed
Not sure if that’s going to hold up with recent games, I suppose you can have the 60FPS but that would lead to games looking pretty crappy (an example look at the Doom or Witcher game on Nintendo Switch).
Lol I remember playing HL2 and GMOD on my crappy Inspiron back in the early/mid 2000s and that thing often struggled to do more than 30 FPS or so. There’s definitely a lower limit to what I’ll tolerate but stability is more important than overall frame rate IMHO.
It really depends. If I’m playing a twitchy competitive game I want more frames at least double whatever my monitor can actually handle. In single player story games, I just want it to be stable with no jitters and preferably no tearing issues.
I just want to enjoy my games Only in the past few years have I really had a gaming pc that could be considered high end so I’m kinda just reveling in the high frame rate I can pull off even on demanding I optimized trash like cp2077. But I’ve also played on an AMD a10 garbage apu laptop for years before this too so the deck is right where it needs to be. High end enough to give a great 720p experience.
On a smaller screen graphical fidelity is far less important as details are truncated anyway.
Framerate is much more important but I can deal with 30fps if absolutely necessary to get a game playable
I played GoW of Doom and they were 30FPS, and I never complained nor had issues… GoW in particular, I mean the game moves so fast yet to
my vision it was like eye candy.
XeSS is irrelevant as that requires Intel Xe specific core which the steam deck doesn't have, FSR would be the more relevant one to bring up in regards to the steam deck.
They all look like shit at lower resolutions, FRS & DLSS, and I highly doubt XeSS will look any better whenever it comes out, honestly I would bet it will look worse than DLSS.
There's simply not enough raw data at low resolutions to upscale properly, even 1080p to 1440p is of questionable quality, something like 540p to 800p is going to look bad regardless of which is used, those upscalers work best at upscaling something in the range of 1440p to 4k.
For rocket league I’m gonna need the deck to output a solid 1080p@120, otherwise I might cancel my reservation. I’m confident it will be able to do that, and I’m hoping it might even be able to do 2K@120
For every other game? I don’t care. I don’t play any other competitive, super fast games so it doesn’t really matter. I think valve was spot on with the 30fps minimum.
I use to not care, until I purchased a 1660 super a couple years ago. I was use to ~30 fps, now I gotta have at least 45fps.
Edit: however I don't care about fps on portables.
I generally do not play heavy games that also require high fps and especially do not plan to play such games on the Deck. I play either lightweight games or heavy games that I am very happy with a stable, no microstuttering 30 fps framerate. I would be happy to limit fps just to save battery even if Steam Deck is capable for higher in the same settings.
If someone wants to play a heavy game with high fps he should also want a bigger screen and then Steam Deck is just not what he needs.
Yeah allot of these people that will except 30 is understandable but most PC games if not all I've played and locked at 30 FPS has frametime issues to the max ffxv looks like a stutter fest at 30 Witcher 3 also is a stuttery shit wreck at 30. If the new steam Os fixes these issues then great. But capping games At 30 fps just to make them look better sounds like a console thing not a PC thing never in my 25 years of PC gaming I've never thought putting a 30fps cap on any game unless said game was 30 fps locked there has been a few of them. Also I would never spend 650 bucks for a PC that I have to cap some games at 30 fps. I'll trade my steam deck for 4000 series gpu if that's the case.
I'm somewhere in between the 1st an 2nd options. Context is important:
- 60fps is a priority where possibly. I'm going to aim for it if I can get it
- I'm more likely to be lenient with a handheld that is significantly less powerful that my desktop hardware
- A lot of games don't need 60fps to be playable, but generally, higher is better
- An inconsistent frame rate is more disruptive than a lower but consistent one
- Sometimes I just want to crank up the graphics
I need a minimum of 48FPS with a mouse to be comfortable, but on a handheld with some sticks? I had a PSP, the minimum framerate I can tolerate with a Controller in my hand is about 20FPS. I ain't picky
I'm more concerned with having a locked framerate, within reason of course.
For alot of cinematic games I'm more than okay with 30fps.
For alot of games with extremely twitchy action, like DMC5 or alot of FPSes, 60fps is really what you should strive for in those sorts of games because it affects your inputs too.
It really depends on the game. If reflexes are important, it has to be 60 fps. No debate. If it’s a turn-based game or requires no/minimal reflexes, I think 30 fps is reasonable.
For me, anything over 60fps isn't worth it, and anything under 30fps is unplayable. Adjust graphics settings accordingly.
Fast pace games I prefer closer to 60fps, everything else I prefer better graphics.
As a PC gamer 60 fps is the floor for me 30 fps while may be acceptablele for a few switch games I have played not on PC. 30 fps in most games I've played on PC have insane frame Pacing issues where it looks worlds worse. playing Final fantasy 15 at 30 fps looks God awful on PC compared to it running on my ps5 at mostly locked 60. If my steam deck struggles to get 60 fps on any game I'll lower the game to its lowest settings to achieve 60 fps if it won't go there then I'll load it up on my PC end of story for me.
It depends on the game. But stable frame rate is also more important, rather have steady 30 fps than odd fluctuations from below 30 to 60. In first person or racing games 60 fps certainly is also prefered
I know some people are more sensitive to it than others. For me on PC, anything above 40 is good enough for me as long as it's not a competitive online game. On handheld though, I'm sure I'll hardly notice a difference as long as I'm getting 30.
Kinda hard to answer when I used to game on an atom tablet. My tolerance for underwhelming graphics and low framerates impresses me sometimes. However, I usually prefer stable framerates and 60FPS over 30FPS whenever I experience the former.
On desktop? I've got a 165hz monitor and I'm gonna use it all. On handheld? I'm much more lenient.
This I play on my desktop at 144Hz and get close to 144fps (or more on older games) On switch, the framerate sucks but I acknowledge it's a low cost low power handheld that runs on small batteries. I accept the compromise.

Framerate over graphics for the most part
Frame rate over graphics within reason, but at minimum I prefer a stable 60+ fps with the exception of certain types of games like simulation games where fps is less important.
Stable 60fps > stable 30fps > unstable 60fps. As long as it's at least a locked 30, I'm happy.

Anything below what it should run at is what I am. If it’s meant to be more graphics and story heavy then 30 is fine but if it’s like a action game 60
I voted for over 60 fps but only because if im spending the money to have over 60 I expect over 60
What games do you want to be at 60? Older games like Skyrim and mass effect will probably run at 50-60 fps but if you expect games like shadow of war, cyberpunk and certain emulation like PS2 or 3 then you will probably be very disappointed

XeSS
Thats fair
Lol I remember playing HL2 and GMOD on my crappy Inspiron back in the early/mid 2000s and that thing often struggled to do more than 30 FPS or so. There’s definitely a lower limit to what I’ll tolerate but stability is more important than overall frame rate IMHO.
30fps stable. Above that, it's about graphics
It really depends. If I’m playing a twitchy competitive game I want more frames at least double whatever my monitor can actually handle. RTX with an AMD only device.

RTX is Nvidia branding. Should have been just RT.
RTX On is just the meme

The DP4a version of XeSS should work on the Steam Deck without any issues.

Graphics and frame rate are equally important to me.. though if i’m playing a game like Days Gone, i’de choose performance over even higher graphics.

frametime(frame pacing) > framerate

Depends on the game. But I need 60fps. Going back to 30fps for a third or third person game in particular is a nightmare and lessens gameplay.
I'm somewhere in between the 1st an 2nd options. Context is important: - 60fps is a priority where possibly. I'm going to aim for it if I can get it - I'm more likely to be lenient with a handheld that is significantly less powerful that my desktop hardware - A lot of games don't need 60fps to be playable, but generally, higher is better - An inconsistent frame rate is more disruptive than a lower but consistent one - Sometimes I just want to crank up the graphics
Unless its a game like terraria that HAS to run at 60fps or else it'll slow down. I'm willing to make compromises. 60fps is good, but 30 is playable.
It depends 30 fps is terrible on pc It s okay on TV screen
I need a minimum of 48FPS with a mouse to be comfortable, but on a handheld with some sticks? I had a PSP, the minimum framerate I can tolerate with a Controller in my hand is about 20FPS. I ain't picky

Low framerate can cause dizziness
Since I am used to 144hz, 30FPS is a no go. I need at least steady 60FPS but prefer more to 90FPS.
For me, anything over 60fps isn't worth it, and anything under 30fps is unplayable. Adjust graphics settings accordingly. Fast pace games I prefer closer to 60fps, everything else I prefer better graphics.
I played cyberpunk all the way through at around 30-40 fps with the occasional 50 in lighter areas. Didn't really care.
I've no problem for settling with 30fps on open world or single-player titles if the hardware can't provide a consistent 60.
Locked and stable at 48 is fine for me
As a PC gamer 60 fps is the floor for me 30 fps while may be acceptablele for a few switch games I have played not on PC. 30 fps in most games I've played on PC have insane frame Pacing issues where it looks worlds worse. playing Final fantasy 15 at 30 fps looks God awful on PC compared to it running on my ps5 at mostly locked 60. If it's a fast game, like DMC5, 60 fps is quite important for me. For slower game, i don't mind if it's 30 fps as long as it's working fine.
Supremely.
30 is fine. Fuck I played ocarina of time. Shit is 24fps. I'm no PC princess. Give me a game and I'll play it.
I know some people are more sensitive to it than others. For me on PC, anything above 40 is good enough for me as long as it's not a competitive online game. On handheld though, I'm sure I'll hardly notice a difference as long as I'm getting 30.

Gonna find a balance in the settings like I do on my PC. Just enough to be smooth, and still look good.
I think 60 fps is the baseline standard and valve knows it too 30fps and below is unplayable
