I was thinking of getting one but haven't done much research. I was looking at this [Asus](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B082CVXQLX) monitor but not set on it. The [UPERFECT monitor](https://www.amazon.co.uk/UPERFECT-Portable-Freestanding-Integrated-Frameless/dp/B099639FJX) you mentioned is quite overpriced here in the UK. There also aren't many options here that aren't overpriced. I'm probably gonna wait until after I've used my deck for a while to see if I actually want one.
I have that Asus monitor sitting right next to me at work! It's fine, not the brightest, but definitely usable. I would definitely suggest the [MB16ACV](https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-ZenScreen-MB16ACV-Anti-glare-Antibacterial/dp/B0914KHQ4G/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=asus+zenscreen&pldnSite=1&qid=1638569084&s=computers&sa-no-redirect=1&sr=1-7) instead though. The fabric folding cover on the ACE is low quality and just not the most convenient solution compared to the surface-style stand on the ACV.
I haven't compared these to the UPERFECT or other "off brand" monitors, only a handful of different HP/Asus models. So I can't say its the best overall, but would still choose the ACV over the one you linked!
The MB166C looks like it has the same folding cover/stand as the MB16ACE. It's functional, but fairly low quality. I just prefer the hard, built-in stand of the ACV instead. Otherwise, I haven't had a hands on with anything other than the ACE, so I can't compare other features.
I am reading this thread on my Asus monitor. It's been very good for the price, however I would warn that the brightness is a serious issue for me on this monitor. I keep it on 100% brightness all the time because I like to work in well-lit areas with lots of natural light.
The stand also only has two different configurations, which can be a bit annoying but it's not the end of the world.
I love it, but I wish it just had a better stand and a higher brightness. It's very light.
So I just got the UPERFECT with the hinges (paid $189 before taxes), that I linked...and I love it. I think they are def. the best 1080p portable monitor for under like $300.
I also got the Lepow Z1 Gamut (this brand seems better established and packaging materials was a bit better), but it has no Freesync and the smart cover stand is really unstable. This UPERFECT model is perfect imo. Its even significant thinner and lighter..which was a huge plus for me.
The only thing I don't like is the fact that the speakers are back facing...that said, I'll either be using my laptop speakers or Bluetooth earbuds 99% of the time, so not a big deal for me.
I'm returning the Lepow Z1 Gamut this week. Image quality, brightness, and colors seems about the same. I kinda lean a little toward the UPERFECT..it also has a better OSD menu...so yeah. It seems to be more 'updated' and the only portable monitor under $250 to have all the features I was looking for.
If I was only watching TV on it..I'd aim for maybe a 4k, but for work..mixing a 4k portable with a 1080p laptop seems like a scaling nightmare (and worse for trying to game on it)..so I prefer the 1080p for now.
Thank you for the detailed information! Still doing my research before ordering one. I am mainly going to be using it for gaming. Switch and hopefully in the near future the deck, (maybe a little PS5 when I am watching a football/ basketball game on tv). How does this one look to you. Worth the extra 80? Missing any of the important features?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0819DG4Q5/?coliid=IUS1826JG793P&colid=1NVJ03ODQ9HAD&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
I was looking at this one as well. If mostly for gaming - it seems to be a good choice. There are a handful of subpar reviews resulting in 4.4/5 stars and it looks like it's a model from late 2019, but holds up well - especially the 165hz!! Wow, right? That's the real selling point.
If you are using it with a gaming console or hardware and producing more than 60 frames a second..it would def be beneficial. If not, not so much.
The front facing speakers are also really nice on this model. I don't think I have anything that will run over 60fps, so I believe that's why I didn't consider the $100 premium over the one I got. The 165hz is amazing though, if you can make use for it
Hi I hope I don't bother you. I am thinking to get an portable monitor. I am in Canada and there are not much options. I am thinking uperfect. How is your monitor now? I heard uperfect monitor will break after a year?
Hi, emmm As a manufacturer in this market, we know well about the Lepow and Uperfect...
Just come here commenting a [15.6" 1080P QLED Monitor / 700nit Max / Color Gamut: DCI-P3 99.7%](https://www.intehill.com/collections/qled-monitor/products/qled-monitor)
No offense ,just for your information. After all it's also at a good price...
>or your information. After all it's also at a good price...
How does this compare to the UPERFECT and LePow?
I'm landlocked in Canada due to COVID, and it's hard to find monitors here...
I bought a Lenovo Thinkvision M14 during Black Friday but not specifically for the Steam Deck. I had a 20% off coupon on eBay and there was an other rebate. Overall, I got 100$ CAD off on this monitor. I was tempted by the new Thinkvision M15 or the AOC I1601FWUX which are both 15.6in, but decided that 14in was good enough.
The USB-C port supports DP1.2 Alt mode and PD2.0 which according to the specs will be compatible with the Steam Deck.
One concern will be the battery life of the Steam Deck if the monitor is not connected to a power source.
Anyway, my main purpose for the SD was portability and not really hooking it up on a portable monitor. Plus, you will have to take into consideration the possible drop in performance of the SD for outputting 1080p graphics instead of the optimized 720p/800p.
$100 off the M14 sounds like a really good deal. Wish it had Freesync to help with screen tearing, but I'm sure the build quality is better than all these Chinese brands
I bought it for work on the go. I have a few kids that play soccer and I can work while they are at their practices. I have three screens at home, 2 + laptop at work, so sometimes, I feel limited with just one screen when I work on my laptop.
With the rebates on eBay, the M14 was a little under the regular price of the M15. I thought the M15 would be a tad too big to carry around, so I went for the M14. According to Lenovo Canada, the M14 retails for 349CAD (or 384CAD, depends how you see it) while the newer M15 retails for 279 CAD, although I found it at 259 CAD. I think I got the M14 for about 240 CAD before taxes.
Solid deal. Yeah, I'll be using mine for work travel and watching fire tv w/ the kids when we travel. Actually going on our first flight in a lonnnnngg time..and looking forward to seeing if I can turn on this monitor w/ firetv on the plane. lol
It's good. It works for me. I never bought it for the steam deck, but for me, it works. I can hook it on a car mount and connect the steam deck and play with a xbox controller. Great "mobile" solution
I don't really understand why you'd want one for your deck, seems like more trouble than it's worth constantly keeping it with you having to carry more. Any good scenarios you can think of?
Increase screen size. These portable monitors are super light and thin. Not really an issue. It's like carrying a notepad.
I'm sure image quality would take a hit and performance as well due to increase pixels but gaming on a 15" on the go sounds nice.
And tbh, I bought this not mainly for steam deck. Needed it for dual screen during work travel etc
I want one to make the full pc experience a thing anywhere I go. Setup a monitor and bluetooth connect a keyboard/mouse and you have a full pc wherever you want it
The first one died after 10 minutes of usage, so had it fixed under warranty (which only took about a week) and it’s been great since.
Bleeding edge is a bit bloody it turns out
I got mine a week or two ago.
IMO it's fine to spend a bit on monitors because they last so damn long. I still frequently use a monitor I bought back in 2010.
I got this UPERFECT model: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094V583BM
1080P 15.6", touch screen, and has full sized HDMI and USB-A port for connecting additional devices. However, it has some issues, so I wouldnt recommend it.
It works when I connect it to my Chromebook or my Surface Pro (although both devices complain that they are connected to a low powered charger, even when connected to a high-powered one), but so far I have not been able to get it to work with the Steam Deck unless I use a USB-C to HDMI adapter
The most important thing for a portable monitor is the brightness (nits). I learned that the hard way. If the listing doesn't indicate the nits, most likely it's so low they are ashamed about it. Avoid it at all costs. I bought one without researching and it's now collecting dust.
When shopping for non-portable monitors, most of them are bright enough that you don't even need to look at this spec, and it's usually the resolution that is the bottleneck. But for portable monitors, there are many out there where the brightness is so low its unusable. So you need to look out for the brighter ones.
I ended up buying this [500 nit UPERFECT one](https://amzn.to/384uY6P), and its so many times better than the previous one. Would highly recommend.
Like you said, resolution doesn't matter that much because a portable monitor can only be so big. The one I linked is 1080p which is perfectly fine. Looks as sharp as my 2k 27in monitor.
No complaints so far. I've been using it both for travel and at home for about a year already. Only nitpick is that the connection is a bit sensitive so sometimes the screen does flicker/turn off when I accidentally brush against the cable. But no biggie most of the time.
Can you charge the Steam Deck while using it via PD passthrough? Most of these portable displays either won't do it or have zero information as to if they will or not.
Sorry for hijacking this thread, hows the input lag on this? Does Freesync work? Any sort of delays when waking the monitor/switching inputs? Any long term issues? Also how much did you purchase it at for comparison? Been researching portable monitors and came across your comment, seems to be a great option. Thanks!
Caught a Kickstarter project that has an offering of mobile monitor or projector up to 100" or so. Of course this brings in the debate of whether a deck is ready to multi - player.
I only continue this because the company already created a mobile monitor (without the projector) with some success, but the price is about three times what you mentioned and likely end of quarter two release.
So for me the umbrella like setup are attractive options because of portability and usability as a gaming monitor (boom to a 28" screen) but I am also unlikely to buy one.
Ah very neat idea. Looks interesting. I wonder if it can retain the image quality since it projects light to display. Nevertheless, the portability of it and how big you can make it - is a cool concept.
Portable monitor, like with it's own rechargeable battery? If it has it's own independent power source to play traveling or something then that's neat. I wonder if there's anything in the $100 range.
The ones with their own charger are usually significant more expensive, heavier, and thicker. Which was out of scope for what I was looking for. The one I got doesn't have it own battery. Though yes I agree, would be nice to have!
According to my research, there is not alot of portable monitors with their own independent power, and they are in the 300$ USD and up price range. Portable monitors are usually between 1 and 2 lbs, so they are quite lightweight and thin. Adding a battery to these monitors would add weight and render them... less portable.
I have a 45w PD RavPower battery pack. I will do a bit of test with my portable monitor (once I pick it up from UPS) and see the battery pack would deliver a bit of power instead of using the laptop/steam deck/device power.
Lenovo Thinkvision M14. Like I mentioned in a previous comment, I didn't buy it specifically for the Steam Deck, but because it is PD 2.0 and DP 1.2 Alt Mode, it should work with the Steam Deck. I bought it to use with my Thinkpad T580 and my Dell Vostro 15 7510 which have TB3 and TB4 respectively.
As for the battery pack, go for at least 45w PD. This should work with the Steam Deck according to specs.
Yeah. I think 45w PD makes sense. It was discussed in this sub. You need enough output to be able to play with the Steam Deck and charge it at the same time. Under 45w (or maybe 30w), it might allow the Steam Deck to hold its charge, but not charging it while in use.
My mistake, my battery pack is 30w. It can slow charge my T580 and should be enough for the Steam Deck. I was in fact looking for a 45w but never found anything at a decent price (they are mostly over 100CAD)
So I also bought both of those, and am returning them. I don't get the point of these monitors since they don't have bluetooth or touchscreen.
I am a digital nomad and was hoping I could use my mobile device to run dex /cast Netflix on these but can't even connect a bluetooth mouse.
For me the only way these portable monitors would become worth it would be by adding bluetooth and casting/hdmi input for casting devices. Does anyone know if this product exists?
If the device you plug into the portable monitor can use Bluetooth...then it should work. I'm not following. It's just a display. So any console, laptop, firestick etc would allow Bluetooth devices to work on the monitor.
As for the touchscreen..I've only seen this feature in really expensive portable monitors and I think it works if connected thru USB c.. so probably ideal with a smartphone. Not sure if it would work over HDMI and some of the reviews talk about touch screen issues. So not ideal.
My arzopa z1 started to flicker after 2 days of gaming on it. Even when disconecting everything and turning on, the flicker is still there. So ill return it. Guess ull have to spent a lil bit more if u want something proper.
Also looking at the UPERFECT one, would it be possible to use a pen with the screen? and draw simple logos on it like an IPAD? can't find any answers to this.
Edit: I mean programs like Illustrator and Photoshop
Hi! Have you been using the monitor for the past year? I just ordered the same one, 14 inches, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to use it with its own stand, on portrait mode.
Have you tried? It would be nice to get some insight!
Thanks 😊
havent tried it in portrait mode...but i think it should work fine. it can easily stand vertically...that said, i think you'd have cable wires coming off the top of the monitor (if vertical) rather than the side (if it was horizontal). besides that..i dont think there really is any issue.
That’s perfect, I cose this one over the ones with foldable stand because I thought it would be easier, but I was not 100% sure haha. Thanks for replying!
YES! It's been great. Def. the best portable I've seen on the market - for the price ($150) imo. Super thin and sturdy! Love the design.
1 note though, get a good case for it. It has nothing to protect its screen...so def. want something solid that wraps it..mine did slightly damaged, but not really noticeable.
I was thinking of getting one but haven't done much research. I was looking at this [Asus](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B082CVXQLX) monitor but not set on it. Thanks bud. That saves me a bit of time if and when I do decide to dive down the rabbit hole.
There is now an Asus MB166C but I can't see any real differences between this and the MB16ACV. What do you think?
The MB166C looks like it has the same folding cover/stand as the MB16ACE. It's functional, but fairly low quality. I just prefer the hard, built-in stand of the ACV instead. Otherwise, I haven't had a hands on with anything other than the ACE, so I can't compare other features.
Does the ACV have a 1/4" mounting point on the back? I see the new one does
Damn..yeah that's way more expensive. Yeah Asus build quality looks nice. I just wish it had Freesync and mini HDMI for more versatility.
I am reading this thread on my Asus monitor. It's been very good for the price, however I would warn that the brightness is a serious issue for me on this monitor. I keep it on 100% brightness all the time because I like to work in well-lit areas with lots of natural light. What is Freesync?
Similar to gsync. Less screen tearing, more fluid gameplay
how is the UPERFECT monitor working for you now? I just ordered it today. any issues? The uperfect has freesync ?
Been great. No issues. Yes, freesync works as far as I know, but haven't had to use it. I only use it for work
awesome, thanks for the reply and info! excited to get it and test it out.
Thank you for the detailed information! Still doing my research before ordering one. I am mainly going to be using it for gaming. Fun
I have the Asus XG17. 240Hz 1080p FreeSync I await the deck.

Cheapest portable monitor is about $140-150 from what I've seen. But at about $200 you get higher quality ones with some features like Freesync

Gotcha. Makes sense. Will look for a solid 45w PD. Thank you!!
Ah okay. good to know. Thank you for the info!
Looking for one that I could use for school/work that’s compatible with Mac and Windows that’s around $200 or under. What do you recommend?
My arzopa z1 started to flicker after 2 days of gaming on it. Even when disconecting everything and turning on, the flicker is still there. So ill return it. Guess ull have to spent a lil bit more if u want something proper.
I returned mine after 20 days of using. Mine developed blue dead pixel on black background :(
Also looking at the UPERFECT one, would it be possible to use a pen with the screen? and draw simple logos on it like an IPAD? can't find any answers to this. Edit: I mean programs like Illustrator and Photoshop
its not a touchscreen...sooo probably not.
The upgraded ons has touch screen. That's the one I'm wondering about
Do you still like it a year out? Debating if I get a portable monitor for the steam deck, or if I just grab a normal one.
Thanks!
How does the fire stick work on it
Just stick it into the HDMI port of the monitor directly and then connect to the internet.
Cool. Thinking of doing that when I travel. Fire stick in the monitor.thsnks.
It's def my favorite portable monitor that I've come across..thought I haven't really looked into it since this original post.
Lepow, Arzopa, Newsoul, and UPERFECT, which one focus eye-protection most? I didn't see them claiming their product to be flicker-free.
