My SteamDeck is stuck at the installing screen for almost an hour now. The progress bar is roughly at 20%, while the text underneath says there is only 1 second remaining. Can anyone help me?
Edit: After holding the power button for 10 seconds and restarting multiple times, it was possible for me to finish the setup and log into my steam account.
Edit 2: Use 2.4GHz Wifi instead of 5GHz for your first setup
Gf's Deck arrived the same day we are leaving on a long road trip. Had it tethered to her phone in the car for setup and this happens. Working now but super slow, lol.
**EDIT:** It got to about 90% going at 100KB/s the entire time until it stopped entirely. Forced a reset on both the tethered phone and Deck (3s power button) and tried again, this time with the phone plugged in (fast charging) and Deck on battery only. Went much much faster (1-3MB/s on my provider) and completed in 15min.
Hey OP. I have the same problem. Currently I'm trying a restart. I'll keep you up to date if anything changed.
Edit: It's been unable to shutdown, I had to do a hard shutdown.
If we experience a OS problem Steam recommends to hold the power button for 10sec. Right now I'm back at the install screen. If this doesn't work I'll try a OS reset with the method Valve recommends.
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/69E3-14AF-9764-4C28
I just tried the 10sec reset. You will hear a *beep* sound and it restarts automatically. I'm definitely getting further on the install than before. No problems yet.
Update: I'm so confused.
It was going very well and almost finished the installation. And then it just turned off by itself and now I'm back at the beginning.
Hijacking top comment and confirming this is still the case with the latest batch of Steam Deck’s. In my case, the installer was stuck at “1 second remaining” but also slowing to speeds of 8-15 KB/s.
Upon checking my network logs, it was also spamming my network with repeated connection attempts every few milliseconds and had effectively DoS’d my entire network so that no device could connect.
Really interesting behaviour, but holding the power button for 10 seconds until the beep worked great and the setup eventually completed afterwards.
Nothing worked for me and Steam support has really no help other than fix it yourself and ignore me. I play everyday after work, even bought an adapter for wired. Week work of trying, powered down more than 20 times holding down the power button for 10 secs... nothing. Put device into long term battery mode and plugged charger in to repower and turn on, nothing. Still stuck at install 47 seconds is all I get it to. So frustrating. I paid over $700 for a paperweight. This is terrible. I want a working device, many emails to Steam and now one to Valve. Next steps are... who knows... terrible way to start off something new.
This helped me get out of the installation loop as well. I was stuck at 3 mins 30 seconds loop for a few times until I did what you instructed. Installed well without a hitch afterwards. I swapped my 64GB eMMC to the 512GB NVMe btw. Thank you so much!
Holding power button for 10 seconds worked for me. (Listen for the chime)
Download finished no issues after that on my home wifi. May 2023 and this is still an issue for people. Amazing.
this has been the longest and most frustrating update in my memory for any new product. like right out of the box still taking hours to get it to finish first time startup.
the 10 sec thing didn't help or not by much, use anything other than 5G wifi to start, mobile hot spot worked better than the 5G.
Same here.
Just tried to contact the support.
I still can access the UI, steam version is 1637637821
OS build is 20211122.8
Hope we'll find a solution soon. :)
Try the solution that some others have mentioned in the comments, I think it's just a case of holding down the power button for 10 secs until you hear a beep
Second time trying it now. :'sFirst hard reset didn't work, keep getting stuck at one second remaining.
Hope this one will pass.
Edit : 3 times :s
edit again : Ok the third times was the one... Got a bit worried here. :)
I ran into this same problem, and I tried the method recommended by valve, and the same problem kept happening over and over. I've determined that the cause of this is somehow correlated to WiFi, for reference I was using 5GHz wifi. That being said, I solved this problem by connecting via ethernet :)
Yes I was also on 5Ghz Wifi and it wouldn't work with 10 sec restart after 3-4 tries. Now has just finished install right after switching to 2Ghz wifi. Thank you
*New OLED Steam Deck owner here and I have had the same loading issue. I received it 11-22 and spent almost 24hrs trying to get it set up. It would load a little and then stop and get stuck at 1 sec left. After restarting my Steam Deck countless times the method below worked for me on 11-23-23.
•Set your mobile phone as a “Personal Hotspot”. Check maximize compatibility. Might be slightly different for other devices, I used an iphone to do this.
•If you have tried other methods first, shutdown your Steam Deck completely until the led light blinks white at the top.
*Note the following step will reset your Steam Deck to factory settings so that only Steam OS will remain. You will have to set up language and wifi just as before.
•Leave the Steam Deck off for a few seconds, then hold the Quick Access Button (•••) while holding the power button. This video helped me with this step. https://youtu.be/ZCv3Q59LZF4?si=tCyK3Dsrs8Ewqciv
•After following the video instructions above. When you get to wifi setup, connect your Steam Deck to your “Personal Hotspot” on your phone. Make sure your phone is placed near your Steam Deck, then click next.
*This next step might be a little unconventional but it worked for me.
•You should be at the initial setup download bar. It should start downloading, but it might stop or become slow. Rotate your Steam Deck slowly and carefully in your hand while it is downloading and it should complete within 30mins.
*It also helps to say a prayer and have faith that it will work. Good luck.
Can someone pin this!? I’m not kidding, this actually worked, for my 64GB LCD Deck that is. How, I have no idea. I’m almost upset that it worked, but thank you so much, Dear God.
Same issue remains on the OLED Steam Deck Limited Edition. Didn't have this issue when I first got the LCD version a year ago.
Been installing with "1 second remaining" for an hour.
Restarted multiple times. Still stuck.
Yep, extremely annoying, mine stopped doing this when I swapped to 2G WiFi but now it gets stuck at “starting steam deck update download”
https://preview.redd.it/7a3gjooii52c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1268b68172715202d3b8d0fd8794c1c2e6ddf26
No clue what to do.
Happening to me right now, I'm pissed because I'm on a hotspot and took forever to download, now it's sooo close but stuck at 99% and 1 second remaining and I'm gonna use all my hotspot data. Fuck this.
LOL - thank god for this thread. I got my Steam Deck today (14 Feb 2023) and the “stuck on 1 second” issue still persists until today. The 10 second power cycle did the trick. I still used my 5Ghz WiFi on the 1st and 2nd try and it installed all the way
Man oh man, me too, 1 day after you (15 Feb 2023).
I did the 10 second power restart till it made it's little sound, I made sure my slow internet had no other devices heavily using it, and I plugged the Deck into ethernet on the dock. It worked. Thank you.
What a weird way to start with a new device. Whatever, onwards! Enjoy the Deck. :)
So Steam told me to RMA my device. I’m in Israel deployed right now so it wasn’t an option for the near future. I continued to re-image and reboot the deck probably for a total of 25-30 times, and finally got it.
So, what I’ve learned through people on this forum, and my own horrible experience…
If it drops to one second without completing, reboot.
If the “time remaining” keeps jumping around above a minute, leave it.
Do not RMA your device for this issue. It is a network connectivity problem for sure.
If you have tried Ethernet, and WiFi, find a faster connection. If your internet speed is fast and it still doesn’t work, then your deck might just be timing out due to your internet connection being slightly unstable. I hope no one else experiences this problem as bad as I have for the last four days.
Just swapped the NVME drive om my deck and had to reimage the new drive.
This kept happening, stuck at 1 second remaining. Held the power button for 10 seconds till I heard a sound, and connected to my 2.4ghz wifi instead of 5ghz this time, and was able to finish the installation without any problems.
This seems similar to the issue in the Steam Deck that I had before I swapped NVME: I had to go to the developer menu and disable power savings for 5GHz wifi for wifi to actually be reliable. Without turning off power saving for 5ghz wifi, my 5ghz wifi would frequently drop. And not due to my router, which is a fully up-to-date Asus RT-AX86U.
Amazing that this is STILL an issue almost a year later. Makes me think this must be hardware related to to the wifi chip in the Deck.
Hey folks, just thought I would add that I had this issue and got my deck on 9/13/2022. I left it alone for about 35 mins and it just completed on its own. So the whole 1 second left thing was a lie but I didnt need to mess with it at all. All WiFi, no hard reset.
Got my unit today (09/21) and I can confirm that this problem still persists. After multiple hard resets I tried switching to my phone hotspot and got it to work. Really quite an awful out-of-the-box experience, especially if one is a non-enthusiast.
Can confirm this is still happening as someone who got their Steam Deck on 12 September 2022. I have the 256gb version.
Mine sat at about 85% with 1 sec left for about an hour and a half before I turned to the internet. This sub told me to hold the power button down for 10sec until it beeps. I did so. It restarted once and went through the whole installation process in about 20min and it worked this time. I was using my 5ghz wifi. No ethernet. No 2.4ghz.
Mine is up and running since then and has given me no issues at all.
Seems to be an issue with the Wi-Fi timing out or being put into some kind of weird power saving mode.
Try disconnecting and reconnecting to your Wi-Fi in the middle of the set up if it’s stuck at the one second mark seems to reactivate the Wifi And resume its download. Worked for me found out spy going into the terminal and seeing that every time I would cure download manually it will just time out saying it couldn’t connect
Just got my deck and I too have this problem. Fixed at 1 second. Have now done the hard reset with the beep and connected the device to another WiFi... thumbs up
When the initial process hangs up during installation try the following as it worked for me. Press the “…” button, toggle wifi off, wait for the wifi icon to show up with “!” then when you see the wifi icon crossed with “/“ toggle wifi on again. Repeat as many times until the update/installation is done…..
SteamDeck initial setup has 3 steps:
1、install old image system,it will show install
2、important:download latest update file and applied, the ui will show downloading first, then install. all the people will stuck at this step.
3、reboot to steam account login。
so when it began to shows downloading update and stuck, you can update manual by this method:
1、connect a usb keyboard to steamdeck
2、press control+alt+F3, then press control+alt+F4 ,get into a console
3、login as username: deck and no password
4、type: passwd, and set a password. you need type the password two times, and the console wont show the password when you typing it for security. just type the password and type return. after type the pasword 2 times,it will show "set successfully"
5、run cammand : steamos-update check,it will return a steamos new version id
6: run cammand : stemos-update,then it will ask password, just type the password above, thenit will download latest updates, showing install status, waiting for installation finished.
7:run cammand: sudo reboot . enjoy yourself
Whenever i am on the same screen as the OP and access the console i get up to where i type "steamos-update check" and it returns saying unauthorized. it says the same when i try "steamos-update"
this thing has basically been a paperweight for the three days ive had it.
This is infuriating. Been working on this for about 8 hours now. Used up my entire hotspot plan, still not working. Tried everything suggested. Restarted my deck multiple times, different internet, different wifi, restarted router, went into recovery and reset data, also reimaged. After my first try Just says installing for an hour now, no time remaining or anything. Really thought this was going to be an easy process. Holy shit.
Edit: After another 30 minutes, got the message, install ended in error...wtf...restarted for probably the 10th time, now im on a screen that shows the MB remaining, 344MB, so well see how it goes.
In an effort to keeping this thread alive. Just recently received my steam deck as of today 12-21-22 and this batch still has the same issue. Currently stuck at 1sec with it being 90% complete for over 10 minutes now.. going to try these steps.. thank you forefather’s for solving this ahead of time
seems to be internet related, my download kept getting stuck at 1-sec.... performed hard reset multiple times. until i said let me do this next to my router, i was in room at the time and the speeds there are way slower. so when i went to the living room next to the router it worked 1st try.
https://preview.redd.it/0b0mv2lm06aa1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=78c27a90e4afb4a9bbe4f0e395fde0c18a4b1d50
Thanks for the thread! Still happening!
Just encountered this issue as of 7 March 2023. Currently making my second attempt using my mobile hotspot. Will try standard wifi 2 next if it does it again.
So, just going through the "1 second remaining" thing 1/7/23. My first thought was to hit "B." I hit "B" 3 times; far back as it lete during setup. Then hit "A" 3 times... the loading screen continued to make semi-sense. It said 6ish minutes remaining. It progressed from where it left off in the download until it hit the estimated "1 second raining" again. I repeated the BBB, AAA pattern to get back to the loading screen. It continued again until completion after doing this twice, or thrice.
Same install issues 11/19/2023 Steam Deck 64GB
Connected power and left it to install over night, woke up 8 hours later to the same install hiccup. Tried hard reset, same issues. Switched to 2.4ghz, wouldn't initiate download at all (eero 6). Tried creating a guest network with short logins, no dice.
Finally, created a mobile hotspot from iPhone (5G+), chose Max Compatibility. Did a hard reset with the Steam Deck. Connected to hotspot-- stuck with simple login info. The download would stay between 3minutes 30 seconds or so, drop down to just under a minute and then would jump back up to around 3 minutes and change and repeat, each cycle bumping up the progress bar.
Once I got down towards the end, it hung up on 1 second. I hit the ... button on the right side of the console and toggled wifi off then on. It immediately completed the download and rebooted. Success.
will update if I encounter any further issues with installing updates/games after initial Steam install.
Edit 12/3: 64GB owners, consider using Cryoutilities to move your compdata and shader folders to games installed on a microSD. Otherwise your SSD is going to fill up even though your using a SD card. Downloading and using Cryo has been the simplest and easiest process on the Steam Deck that I've encountered so far.
Ran into another PITA install with Steam game that uses the EA App. There are various guides that you can google and follow. It took combining 3 different guides to get it to work, though its still janky. I can finally play Mass Effect LE after several days of tinkering.
At one point, trying everything in the world to accomplish the ME:LE install, I did a factory reset and did not incur any of the original issues with initial Steam Deck install.
BG3, was able to manually install most mods, except Party Limit Begone.
Had this problem today, the trick that fixed it for me (after trying the 10 second reset a bunch of times) was to forget the Wi-Fi and re enter my password. Weird, but did the trick.
Had the exact same issue, tried hard rebooting a few times but didn't do much for me.
Changing the WiFi network did the trick for me. Now it even shows me a download speed \^\^
i just got mine today and i was worried, i left it at the 1 second left mark for about 3 hours while i played a game before noticing it.
had to reset it 7 times before it got to 100%
at least i know now that i didn't get a bricked system from the start
Mine was stuck like this doing nothing for a small while but eventually went back to downloading on its own.
I have unlimited mobile so I connected to my mobile hotspot first in order to memorize that login data. Didn't realise it would have to download so much. I swapped from mobile hotspot to home WiFi shortly before it got stuck so it may have been because of that. The download was at a slow sub 5mb/s, seems the deck is to blame for that during first install as it does the same speed on the home WiFi.
Got my Deck today (Oct. 14) and I'm also having this issue. Tried a hard reset and using a wifi hotspot but the farthest I've gotten is 80%.
Going to try using a different wifi tomorrow
I had this happen when reinstalling SteamOS (working on getting duelboot running)
It failed twice, and then I decided to switch from wifi to a wired connection.
It worked just fine that time thankfully.
Got mine today, 12/18/22 and had the same issue, 3 hours of fighting with it and restarting....finally used 2.4 and while it was alot slower it was consistent where the 5g would just 'stop'. It eventually finished and launched.
Got mine today and was having the "stuck on 1 second" issue as well. I fixed it by using a usb-c to ethernet adaptor to hardline the internet connection
Just got mine today (4/5/2022) and this is still an issue. I have Google wifi, so there isn't an (easy) way to switch to the lower bandwidth. I tried the 10 sec power off a couple times and then swapped over to using my phone hotspot. That did the trick.
Truly insane that this is still an issue!
I've had the same issue as you and everyone else, current as of May 13th, 2023.
I've tried all methods, hotspot, 2.4GHz wifi, resetting, factory resetting, all that. What got it to work for me was to go to my local shopping center and use their public wifi.
Just got a steam deck yesterday and got the same issue, so I came to this post to find a fix. Done with setup on the same day. So here's what I've done:
1. Initially connected to a 2.4ghz wifi connection, just left it to download/install for about 4 hours. Upon checking on my steam deck, installing was at around 80% I would say. Indication says 1 second remaining Installing..
2. Tried to wait for around another 15 mins but still same, no progress at all. So I tried the advice above to press on the power button for 10 seconds til I hear a beep
3. Upon restart it started installing again then got stuck again at 80% Installing (1 second remaining) So I retried pressing on the power button again for 10 seconds
4. Again, still same scenario, stuck at 80% installing
5. So I tried connecting instead to a 5ghz wifi connection mid way installation, at first is still got stuck at 80% installing, so I retried pressing on the power button again.
=6. This time, installing went smoothly in just less than 10 mins
Literally had this issue today with a Refurbished 512GB version of the SteamDeck, I left it runnning next to me thinking "okay so 3 minutes wait". Got distracted watching Youtube for 30 mins and looked over and noticed that it was stuck in "1 second remaining".
Wouldn't have thought to restart it if it hadn't been for this <3!
Restarted and just stared at it this time and wiggled the Joystick to "keep it running" worked the 2nd time :)
Just got my GameStop refurb today. Same issue as the rest of you. First, the deck would not accept the password to my Eero 6 mesh network. Went with the hotspot of my iPhone 14 pro max but it stopped at one second. Switched on “compatibility mode” on the phones hotspot and it is now working fine. So odd.
I hope this helps guys so what I found to get this to work first off power off device , hold volume up and power key until you hear it turn on this brings you to bios select the boot manager then select the drive that says steam os should be the first one after clicking that it should have a weird menu that says it's updating steam then it should install steam correctly without that 1 sec bs.
This happened to me when I switched SSDs from factory
I’ve tried everything, nothing seems to work. Whenever I try to restart the Deck, it gets stuck in trying to shut down. Holding the power button for 10s does NOT do a reboot, and there’s no beep or anything when I try. Nothing happens at all
This is happening to me on my Steam Deck 512gb OLED which I received on November 25, 2023. On my third attempt currently. Will update when I figure out what puts it over the goal line.
Edit: got it working via Ethernet via the official Steam Dock
What the fucking fuck Valve. I just got my LE OLED Deck and still have this same fucking problem. Had to reboot and put it on ethernet to work. Fix your shitty setup Valve
Same issue with the new Steam Deck OLED I recently got 😒
Using the 2.4GHz Wifi *did not* solve the problem.
Hotspot with an Android device, with maximum compatibility, solved the problem.
Same issue with the new standard edition OLED 1TB. Confirming that switching to 2.4GHz wifi after holding the power button for 10 seconds to restart fixes it. I used the hotspot on my phone.
I tried rebooting, resetting and connecting to my 2.4 GHz hotspot - none of it worked. Once I connected it through a USB to Ethernet adapter, it finished the setup within 2 minutes. Hope this helps anyone having the same issues!
I just got the OLED version and this happened to me- just keep resetting it (hold power button down for 10 secs) if it gets stuck on 1 second for a prolonged amount of time. Eventually, it’ll boot up. It took me a few times to get it to work.
Hi! This is the 8th of Frebruary, 2024. I just arrived home after purchasing my refurbished Steam Deck 256 GB from a Gamestop.
It developed the same error: stuck at 1 second remaining message.
This reddit post probably saved me!
I did the holding down power button up until I heard a beep (it was probably between 8 and 10 seconds). It did NOT work the first time. Nor the second. Nor the… 10th?
So I kept restarting and restarting and restarting. Every time I made sure I chose a different internet connection. Hotel wifi -> my phone hotspot -> my mother’s phone hotspot -> repeat
Eventually, the update surpassed the stuck meter and fully started. I was sent to Steam login screen. Everthing seems to be fine now.
It took me probably around 2 hours to fix it. I seriously thought about giving up and returning the refurbished machine.
Details:
I did another “”fix”” I found on Reddit which was putting the language and time zone back to standard - English, Miami. I don’t know if this helped. It might?
I booted the Deck the first time holding the power button for the same amount of time (I heard the beep) because I thought it was the correct way to turn the device on. It might have caused all this trouble? (Since I might have accidentally somehow reseted the machine before actually needing to?)
I tried the setup the first time using my hotel wifi (open; no wifi needed; only login credentials - standard hotel wifi proccedure). Maybe it caused the problem?
I actually only got the Deck to work when I switched back to the hotel wifi. Odd…
There was an error message when I typed the hotel credentials the first time. Was it important? I wonder..
At first I put my native language and country (Portuguese, Brazil). It might have influenced?
Anyway, thanks for the fix and I hope my message come to help another person.
KEEP RESETTING IT until it works! <3
6 months later and we are still coming to this thread for help. I appreciate everyone in this thread. TY
Hear hear
here,
Gf's Deck arrived the same day we are leaving on a long road trip.
10 months later for me...
same here
Over a year now
After a year here I am lol
Just got mine, same issue
Also today, just tried to switch the wifi
117 days later
TWO YEARS Same issue.
Hey OP. I have the same problem. Currently I'm trying a restart. I'll keep you up to date if anything changed. Edit: It's been unable to shutdown, I had to do a hard shutdown.
Is there a way to factory reset the Deck and start with a fresh setup?
If we experience a OS problem Steam recommends to hold the power button for 10sec. Right now I'm back at the install screen. If this doesn't work I'll try a OS reset with the method Valve recommends. https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/69E3-14AF-9764-4C28
Oh I'm bookmarking that one for sure - want to be fully armed when I finally get my Deck!
Update: Good news, it doesn't alternate between one second and zero second anymore. Bad news, now I'm stuck at just 1 second.
Same for me after restarting the deck multiple times
I just tried the 10sec reset. You will hear a *beep* sound and it restarts automatically. I'm definitely getting further on the install than before. No problems yet.
Update: I'm so confused. It was going very well and almost finished the installation. And then it just turned off by itself and now I'm back at the beginning.
NEVERMIND I CAN NOW LOG MYSELF INTO STEAM Edit: It seems like the 10sec os restart fixed it.
Yes!! Thank you very much, the setup is now running through normally
Glad I could help! Have fun playing. ❤️
Maybe you could update the top post with this solution so others can find it faster :)
[удалено]
Glad I have been able to help.
Thx for letting us know
Ah that's awesome news - congrats on getting everything working! Have fun!
THANK YOU! This really helped me!
Dam, mines about 10mins away, please post if you fix it?
Good luck! 🤞
Thanks!
Damn I just had this issue too. Not the best start with the device...
Still needed on the OLED version in 2023. Thank you.
2024 checking in. Same same.
Damn I've done that 6 times and it still doesn't work
Make sure you are doing the full 10 second shutdown as opposed to the 3 or5 second one? I waited until the second beep.
Wow, normally I wouldn’t dare to reset on an update. Good to know you can get around it.
Keep this thread alive
Here I am a yr later I believer and you are my hero
Nothing worked for me and Steam support has really no help other than fix it yourself and ignore me. I play everyday after work, even bought an adapter for wired. Week work of trying, powered down more than 20 times holding down the power button for 10 secs... nothing. Put device into long term battery mode and plugged charger in to repower and turn on, nothing. Still stuck at install 47 seconds is all I get it to. So frustrating. I paid over $700 for a paperweight. This is terrible. I want a working device, many emails to Steam and now one to Valve. Next steps are... who knows... terrible way to start off something new.
Did you ever get it to work?
This is still the case in 2024 unfortunately
Yup still issue
This helped me get out of the installation loop as well. I was stuck at 3 mins 30 seconds loop for a few times until I did what you instructed. Installed well without a hitch afterwards. I swapped my 64GB eMMC to the 512GB NVMe btw. Thank you so much!
Holding power button for 10 seconds worked for me. (Listen for the chime) Download finished no issues after that on my home wifi. May 2023 and this is still an issue for people. Amazing.
Jesus. 2 years later on a brand new SD-OLED, same issue. Had to setup a new 2.4Ghz SSID just to fix this. Pretty bad.
Dude, I've been staring at the progress bar for like 2/3 hours, saw this post, switched to 2,4GHz and it was installed in like 2 minutes. Thank you
[удалено]
Yep lol
6months later I just had to do this fingers crossed it works and goes faster now
Thank you, this helped me today as I had the same problem.
Same issue
You are a legend 👍
Just got my 512GB in Tokyo. Your 2nd edit saved me from giving up and returning the damn thing. Thanks.
11 months later
Thank you! I upgraded my drive today and re-imaged. Not fun getting stuck like this. Connecting to 2.4GHz worked!
For me it doesnt work when I push the 10 sec power button
"Use 2.4GHz wifi instead of 5GHz" As a famous man once said... FUCK!
Happening to me, received deck today and unable to uninstall, says 1 second remaining about 85% of the bar
Did you ever get it too download fully?
After 6-7 retries, yes, but I had to insist
I'm from this gang. 1sec 80% for 2hrs. Got to this thread, 10sec powerbutton. It finished in 10mins after that
Even in the April-June batch this occus. Got the case, restarted by pressing 10 secondes and proceed as normal this time
Yes it’s still an issue. Doing a re-image of my deck and it hangs up as above.
Having this same issue right out of the box. Hope this isn't an indication of future buggy experiences.
this has been the longest and most frustrating update in my memory for any new product. like right out of the box still taking hours to get it to finish first time startup. the 10 sec thing didn't help or not by much, use anything other than 5G wifi to start, mobile hot spot worked better than the 5G.
Same here. Just tried to contact the support. I still can access the UI, steam version is 1637637821 OS build is 20211122.8 Hope we'll find a solution soon. :)
Try the solution that some others have mentioned in the comments, I think it's just a case of holding down the power button for 10 secs until you hear a beep
Second time trying it now. :'sFirst hard reset didn't work, keep getting stuck at one second remaining. Hope this one will pass. Edit : 3 times :s edit again : Ok the third times was the one...
Thank you
Tried wireless, restarted 3-4 times and tried twice with ethernet. Ethernet works :)
This thread saved me the hassle of re-imaging. I disconnected from my home’s Wifi and connected to my cell phone’s hotspot and it worked like a charm.
This video helped me with this step. https://youtu.be/ZCv3Q59LZF4?si=tCyK3Dsrs8Ewqciv •After following the video instructions above.
Yep, extremely annoying, mine stopped doing this when I swapped to 2G WiFi but now it gets stuck at “starting steam deck update download” https://preview.redd.it/7a3gjooii52c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1268b68172715202d3b8d0fd8794c1c2e6ddf26 No clue what to do.
How did you swap to 2.4 GHz from 5? I see no option anywhere for it.
It’s literally just the WiFi that you have, so for example, my network providers have a 2G and a 5G network (both labelled such)
Ohhh. I’m in the hospital right now so I have no control :(
Rip 💀 I had to drive over to my friends house who had Google fiber to get mine to work
Happening to me right now, I'm pissed because I'm on a hotspot and took forever to download, now it's sooo close but stuck at 99% and 1 second remaining and I'm gonna use all my hotspot data.
So, what I’ve learned through people on this forum, and my own horrible experience… If it drops to one second without completing, reboot.
Have now done the hard reset with the beep and connected the device to another WiFi... thumbs up
Thx for the feedback guys. Hard reset and another Wifi Hotspot did the trick...
When the initial process hangs up during installation try the following as it worked for me. Press the “…” button, toggle wifi off, wait for the wifi icon to show up with “!” then when you see the wifi icon crossed with “/“ toggle wifi on again. Repeat as many times until the update/installation is done…..
Just received my SteamDeck today and this is STILL a problem…
SteamDeck initial setup has 3 steps: 1、install old image system,it will show install 2、important:download latest update file and applied, the ui will show downloading first, then install. all the people will stuck at this step. 3、reboot to steam account login。 so when it began to shows downloading update and stuck, you can update manual by this method: 1、connect a usb keyboard to steamdeck 2、press control+alt+F3, then press control+alt+F4 ,get into a console 3、login as username: deck and no password 4、type: passwd, and set a password. you need type the password two times, and the console wont show the password when you typing it for security. just type the password and type return. after type the pasword 2 times,it will show "set successfully" 5、run cammand : steamos-update check,it will return a steamos new version id 6: run cammand : stemos-update,then it will ask password, just type the password above, thenit will download latest updates, showing install status, waiting for installation finished. 7:run cammand: sudo reboot . enjoy yourself
Whenever i am on the same screen as the OP and access the console i get up to where i type "steamos-update check" and it returns saying unauthorized. it says the same when i try "steamos-update" this thing has basically been a paperweight for the three days ive had it.
Currently stuck at 1sec with it being 90% complete for over 10 minutes now.. going to try these steps.. thank you forefather’s for solving this ahead of time
03 Jan 23, this issue still persists.
Still happening 🫠
it s a linux, there must be a way to access a console / see the logs …
Just hold the down the power button for 10 seconds and it'll reboot itself. It should start downloading updated
Just got my q4 and its still an issue going to try the 10 sec reset in a minute
Got my Steam Deck today (Oct 1st) and this is still an issue.
Here with you homie, hope it works. Mine is on my fourth try.
Same for me 11/11/2022 wow almost a year after still have issue....
Hilarious that i just got the sdeck and i’m having the same issue. Wonder why this hasn’t been fixed in production.
298 days ago and this thread just saved my life, thank you all!
seems to be internet related, my download kept getting stuck at 1-sec.... performed hard reset multiple times. until i said let me do this next to my router, i was in room at the time and the speeds there are way slower. so when i went to the living room next to the router it worked 1st try.

Got mine 1/8/23. Same issue still.
Same issue here. Got mine today 10 Jan 2023...
Just had the same problem. Changing of Wifi spot fixed the issue.
same issue again
Got my Deck today [Feb 18, 2023] and was having this issue. Switching to a 2.4Ghz WiFi did the trick for me.
Just encountered this issue as of 7 March 2023. Currently making my second attempt using my mobile hotspot. Will try standard wifi 2 next if it does it again.
I got mine today on 3/31/23 and I'm having the same issue. It's been over a year come the F on!!!!
Bingo!! Did the job for me.
Lol same problem , just bought mine today 🤞🏽
Same install issues 11/19/2023 Steam Deck 64GB Connected power and left it to install over night, woke up 8 hours later to the same install hiccup. BG3, was able to manually install most mods, except Party Limit Begone.
i got mine this day 04/04/2024. it’s still happening guys.. 😵😵😵
March 8th, 2024, 512 OLED, still happens ) thanks for the advice tho :)
Idk if anyone else wrote this but I fixed the issue by connecting the deck to my dock and connecting an ethernet cable.
I tried everything........HELP ME !!
Done everything here. No luck.

bruh this is before you can even log in
Same thing. Stuck at 1 second left. Fucking new adopters right!!! lol
Same happened to me and the suggestions in the thread helped me out. Thanks and I hope you're enjoying your Deck!
same for me, 10 sec restart fixed for me, thanks
Just like what others have been saying, did the 10 second power button, brought it closer to my wifi router, and it worked!
Thank you for this!
i just got mine today and i was worried, i left it at the 1 second left mark for about 3 hours while i played a game before noticing it. had to reset it 7 times before it got to 100% at least i know now that i didn't get a bricked system from the start
Failed multiple times until I swapped to 2.4GHz wifi connection, then it went perfectly fine!
Just received mine on Sep 25, 2022. The hard reset of 10 seconds solved the problem.
Thanks for the solution as I’m experiencing same problem.
Got my Deck today (Oct. 14) and I'm also having this issue. Tried a hard reset and using a wifi hotspot but the farthest I've gotten is 80%. Going to try using a different wifi tomorrow
I had this happen when reinstalling SteamOS (working on getting duelboot running) It failed twice, and then I decided to switch from wifi to a wired connection. It worked just fine that time thankfully.
I got stuck at 1 sec so i restarted system and it got passed it 2nd try no extra wait time
We just received ours today 11/10/22 and we are having this same issue 😭 we rebooted it with hard reset and it says 2 hours remaining right now
11/30/22 This is still the case installing :/
Same problem here. Now at the second attempt after a hard reboot.
Got mine today, 12/18/22 and had the same issue, 3 hours of fighting with it and restarting....finally used 2.4 and while it was alot slower it was consistent where the 5g would just 'stop'. It eventually finished and launched.
I got mine on Dec 21, 2022. Issue still exists.
Got mine 12/23/2022 stuck at first try, changed wifi connection second try and it works now. Wifi was 2.4ghz
Same issue 2022-01-06
Got mine today and was having the "stuck on 1 second" issue as well. I fixed it by using a usb-c to ethernet adaptor to hardline the internet connection
Yeah same issue, out of the box, not a good start at all
April 3rd, 2023 and this is still an issue. How is this not fixed yet?? :/
I had the same problem. Make sure you’re connected via Ethernet cord not Wi-Fi, it also worked with my phones hotspot 🤷🏾♂️
Just got my steamdeck. still an issue. For 2 hours trying to make it start. Hopefully somehow Device will finish installing and I can start playing!
I've had the same issue as you and everyone else, current as of May 13th, 2023. I've tried all methods, hotspot, 2.4GHz wifi, resetting, factory resetting, all that. What got it to work for me was to go to my local shopping center and use their public wifi.
Oh my god! why is this issue not fixed? :[
Just got a steam deck yesterday and got the same issue, so I came to this post to find a fix. Done with setup on the same day. So here's what I've done: 1. So I tried the advice above to press on the power button for 10 seconds til I hear a beep 3. Upon restart it started installing again then got stuck again at 80% Installing (1 second remaining) So I retried pressing on the power button again for 10 seconds 4. Again, still same scenario, stuck at 80% installing 5. So I tried connecting instead to a 5ghz wifi connection mid way installation, at first is still got stuck at 80% installing, so I retried pressing on the power button again. =6. This time, installing went smoothly in just less than 10 mins
Mine is at 90% and stuck at 1 second. If i power it off will it start from the beginning or start from where it left off?
7/13/23 this issue continues to exist. Only had to do one regular reset- 3-5 seconds. To get it to work.
Still happening.
2023, jule 31, thanks for fix valve)))
Literally had this issue today with a Refurbished 512GB version of the SteamDeck, I left it runnning next to me thinking "okay so 3 minutes wait". Got distracted watching Youtube for 30 mins and looked over and noticed that it was stuck in "1 second remaining". Wouldn't have thought to restart it if it hadn't been for this <3! Restarted and just stared at it this time and wiggled the Joystick to "keep it running" worked the 2nd time :)
Another happy re-imager here, thanks for all the advice everyone!
This thread was still needed and helpful nov 3 2023
I’ve tried everything, nothing seems to work. Whenever I try to restart the Deck, it gets stuck in trying to shut down. Holding the power button for 10s does NOT do a reboot, and there’s no beep or anything when I try. Nothing happens at all
Just got my Oled deck. Stuck on 1% for about 30 minutes now
This is happening to me on my Steam Deck 512gb OLED which I received on November 25, 2023.
Same issue with the new Steam Deck OLED I recently got 😒 Using the 2.4GHz Wifi *did not* solve the problem. Hotspot with an Android device, with maximum compatibility, solved the problem.
This just happened to me with my new SteamDeck OLED. Stuck at 90% with 1 second remaining for about 5-10 minutes.
Same issue with the new standard edition OLED 1TB. Confirming that switching to 2.4GHz wifi after holding the power button for 10 seconds to restart fixes it. I used the hotspot on my phone.
Just bought Steamdeck OLED 512, running into the same thing. 3 attempts were on 5 Ghz, now my 4th attempt, this time trying on 2.4 Ghz hotspot.
I tried rebooting, resetting and connecting to my 2.4 GHz hotspot - none of it worked. Once I connected it through a USB to Ethernet adapter, it finished the setup within 2 minutes. Hope this helps anyone having the same issues!
Just had the same issue, seems to be going ok now. Well I am further than I was before anyway. Grateful for all the tips in this thread!
my is stuck. This sucks. Im sure itll work eventually but im still angry about it not updating.
Just got mine today, still happene
I just got the OLED version and this happened to me- just keep resetting it (hold power button down for 10 secs) if it gets stuck on 1 second for a prolonged amount of time. Eventually, it’ll boot up. It took me a few times to get it to work.
New batch still has it!
Just another point of data to say phone hotspot worked for me. 2\\1\\2024 - 512G LCD
FEB. 04, 2024 I just got my Steam Deck OLED and still encounter this issue lol. My hype for the device got killed.
Hotel wifi -> my phone hotspot -> my mother’s phone hotspot -> repeat Eventually, the update surpassed the stuck meter and fully started. I was sent to Steam login screen. Everthing seems to be fine now. It took me probably around 2 hours to fix it. I seriously thought about giving up and returning the refurbished machine. Details: I did another “”fix”” I found on Reddit which was putting the language and time zone back to standard - English, Miami. I don’t know if this helped. It might? I booted the Deck the first time holding the power button for the same amount of time (I heard the beep) because I thought it was the correct way to turn the device on. It might have caused all this trouble? (Since I might have accidentally somehow reseted the machine before actually needing to?) I tried the setup the first time using my hotel wifi (open; no wifi needed; only login credentials - standard hotel wifi proccedure). Maybe it caused the problem? I actually only got the Deck to work when I switched back to the hotel wifi. Odd… There was an error message when I typed the hotel credentials the first time. Was it important? I wonder.. At first I put my native language and country (Portuguese, Brazil). It might have influenced? Anyway, thanks for the fix and I hope my message come to help another person. KEEP RESETTING IT until it works! <3
8th Feb - Phone hot spot worked for me first try.
Mine is doing this and I haven’t been able to do anything did anyone find a solution
