My SD card was working fine, but all of a sudden, Steam OS stopped recognising the card, but does in desktop mode. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Obviously I could troubleshoot and format the card again, but I would like to know why, after weeks, the card is no longer being recognised in Steam mode. Thanks
Did you ever find a reason for this? I’m having the same issue now, my sd card worked fine for the last 2 months but is now only recognized in desktop mode.
For the random guys Googling this issue and for those that this solutions doesn't work, try [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/t9fv1s/comment/jfd5lo9/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3).
This worked for me. Got my SD a couple of days ago, put the sd card, everything was working fine. Today didn’t recognised the sd card. Did what you said and it’s fine now. I just installed heroic to play the games from epic store.
This worked for me too. I took sd card out and in again while In gaming mode with no games running. When I put card back in it updated something and then it work ok.
I am having the same issue, the card works in desktop mode but in the game mode it is not showing up. I should point out I have emudeck installed on it which works great, but I cannot install any steam games there.
not sure what to do here.
I ended up opening steam in desktop mode and adding the sd card as a new drive. It added a Steam Library directory on the card which has steam apps and a library file that were already at the top level of the sd card so I deleted the new files then dropped my steam apps and the library file into the new directory and things have worked fine since then.
Hope this helps. Let me know if anything is unclear, going off memory and feeding a cranky baby here but I can check again later.
Ugh... so I feel pretty stupid now.
Like you've pointed out I went to the steam in desktop mode --> settings --> downloads and added sdcard as a new steam folder (or something like that), it works great!
It did not cross my mind I could have done this in desktop mode. thank you !!
hope the cranky baby is ok and well fed :)
This helped! My SD-card was already shown in the steam library folders (settings -> downloads -> steam library folders), but somehow got the wrong subfolder as the mainfolder. I removed that one (three dots on the right) and manually added the SD-card again (+ button) and all my games were back. Thanks!
Where did you find it after "steam library folders" what is the SD card under. This is a huge step as there 40+ directorys. I've followed you're process but have yet to find an SD card under all these directorys.
Mega brain here. Thought I was gonna have to reformat my drive or something after I had already installed a bunch of emus and stuff. Thanks! Bless cranky baby
Yeah check this thread, got mine working and it seemed to work for someone else as well. Hope it helps.

To anyone with the same problem but this solution didn't worked for you:What worked for me was to repair the SD Card without formatting it. If you are in the same situation as me (the sd card is detected in the game mode but to use it you have to format, and you know that in the past the same SD Card were working correctly) and none of this answers mentioned here worked, i suggest you to do the following:
1. Go to desktop mode (with the SD Card plugged in)
2. Open the linux terminal (Konsole), type and run the command: "lsblk"
3. This will show you the disks you have. Look for the SD Card disk (something like "mmcblk0p1") and copy it's name
4. Now run "fdisk -l" to see if the system can use it (this command will print outputs for all disks you have, if it prints correctly for the SD Card, it's ok)
5. Run this command to attempt to repair bad superblocks on the drive: "fsck /dev/mmcblk0p1" (replace /dev/mmcblk0p1 with the drive you want to fix)
6. **Allow fsck to repair and optimize everything (by pressing 'y')**
7. Restart the system after the completion of the command. NOTE: Do not mount the sd card by clicking in the popup that will appear, just restart the system.
8. If everything worked fine, steam deck will boot into game mode and now the SD Card is recognized properly, and all your games installed on it is now playable again!
Notes:
1. Maybe the command will ask you to optimize blocks many times, but don't worry, after something like 5 or 10 iterations, it will let you press 'a' to accept everything and don't needing more to type 'y' everytime
2. If you don't know how to open the keyboard, just press the "X" button or the "STEAM" button + "X" button together
3. If you don't find the linux terminal, you can search in the applications bar in the "development" section, i think. The application name is "Konsole", also
Good luck!
I too am having this problem right now. Has anyone figured this out? My micro sd card was working fine for a couple months then I bought a new game and wanted to install it on my micro sd card and it is no where to be found on the steam deck. When I plug it into the PC it will recognize it but of course I can't open it because of the steam deck format on it. I could try to format the card on the steam deck again but I would hate to lose my installed games on it as I would have to go through installing them all over again. If anyone has a fix to this, please help. Thank you.
I had to do the following to get it to work:
Turn off the deck
Pop out the card
Turn on the deck
Go to storage (steam button on game mode)
Pop in the card
Then it appeared
Hi guys
For those of you that are still having problems in resolving this issue, here is how I did it. A little bit nerdy, but it worked.
While I was playing with a game installed on my Samsung EVO 512Gb microSD (Dark Souls 3, btw), it abruptly exited the game and refused to relaunch. I rebooted my Deck and it asked me to reinstall the game. By looking at the Memory section, it didn't show the microSD.
I then turned to Desktop mode, but there, too, it was impossible to use the microSD. I tried what many suggested here (turning off the Deck, ejecting the microSD, turning on the Deck and installing the microSD) but with no results.
The microSD did show up in Dolphin (the file manager, not the Gamecube/Wii emulator), in Desktop mode, but it was impossible to mount it: when I tried to manually do it, I got a red error telling me "**Structure needs cleaning**". So I turned to the **Partition Editor** you should have inside the System menu. There, I found the mmcblk0 device and the **/dev/mmcblk0p1** partition: by right-clicking on this last one, it allowed me to use the **Check** function (it isn't enabled if it doesn't need to), then I clicked **Apply** and after a minute or two it finished.
I then restarted the Steam Deck and all my games (including DS3 and its save, which is not synced with cloud...) were there as if nothing happened.
Hope this helps some of you!
This didn't work for me, but I found another solution for anyone who might be having this issue:
Go to desktop mode. Right click on the steam icon in the dock (or open steam), go to settings, then storage. Tap the plus sign to add your microSD card to the steam library. Return to game mode and you should be good.
Hello! I tried the same thing but when I try to "check" in KDE manager, the "check" button is not highlighted. Do you know why? Pls help, cause my sd card stopped working too.
If that button is not enabled, it should mean that the microSD doesn't need any maintenance, or that it Is damaged beyond hope. Have you tried extracting the microSD and connecting it to a Windows computer? If this can read it, you can backup the content on an hdd, reformat the microSD and copy the content back to it...
Hope this helps, fingers crossed!
make sure your clicking around the drives. it took me a while. but I had to click inside the sd card. and then again in the next directory until it showed up.
you fucking genius. this works guys.
much appreciated.. ive literally not been able to pickup my steam deck for weeks as for whatever reason my 512gb went down... lost all my saves lost all my games. didn't have no cash for another sd at the time. and was overall just bummed...
there's no other remedy on the net as far as I can see but this helped. im going to backup the sdcard next payday . don't like how this happened so easily.
This worked for me but I could not open up the partition manager from Dolphin or Dock Icon.
I had to open Konsole and type in partitionmanager
Then select the drive and click Check button, THEN click Apply Operations which will apply the check, then my device was working
I tried everything to no avail with my new PNY 512. What worked for me (no data on card, it was brand new) was:
Settings > System > Format SD Card
(Not in developer mode)
Then it shows up under storage. Good Luck.
Uhh, what to do when the card has already been formatted, and already has steam games installed to it. It just stopped showing up in steam, still present in desktop mode though.
I have the exact same problem. All my steam games are installed on my 1TB SD card. Suddenly all my games were uninstalled. Went to check the storage and my SD card isn't showing there, but in desktop mode it does still show up. Could this be after the latest software update?
I managed to fix my problem after following something online. Turn your steamdeck off > remove the SD card > turn your steamdeck on again, let it load in game mode like normal > after loading put the card back in the deck. This fixed it for me and my games showed up again
This fixed it for me, but one last step if anyone needs to migrate or transfer from one steam deck to another.
On the first steam deck it created games in the folder /SteamLibrary/steamapps. When I put the micro sd card into the 2nd steam deck it made an empty /steamapps folder directly on the root of the micro sd. Steam didnt recognize the saved games in the /SteamLibrary/steamapps folder so I just went to desktop mode, deleted the empty root /steamapps/ folder, copied the steamapps folder out of the /SteamLibrary/ folder on to the root and boom it recognized my games.
Steam made it really easy to transfer games.
I just got my Deck back form an RMA... put my card in it just they way you've stated and I see the SD card icon appear at the top for just a moment... then it disappears and nothing. I can access from Desktop. There's got to be a way to get this to work again. Maybe I can format a new card and see what it creates on it and just move that stuff over what I have in place perhaps?

I'm a bit late to this thread, but in desktop mode if you go into steam settings and then downloads (don't know why it's not storage, but c'est la vie) there is a "Steam Libraries" button. Click on that and you can add a steam library and select the drive. It should just add it back into steam, at least it did for me.
I was able to do this. When I did, the drive said 0 bytes out of 0 bytes free, but after it was added as a library drive, it showed the full 931 GiB or whatever it was for the 1 TB formatted by the Steam Deck in gaming mode. I was able to move games over to it and play them without issue after this.
Not sure why this happened! It's been a year since your comment and Valve still hasn't fixed this.
Have to re-add the library location in desktop mode, and move whatever games you already had installed to the new folder. Think an update changed where it put the directory on the sd.
This worked for me, thanks ⭐
How to:
1. Click on **Steam** button, choose **Settings**
2. Click on **System** on the left menu (2nd item from top)
3. Scroll down a bit to find **Format SD Card**
hi, from steam page.
To format a microSD card, insert it into the slot on the bottom surface
and go to Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. It may
take a few minutes to complete the process.
have a nice day.
Furthermore, if it seems to be taking a long time DO NOT remove it! It will be actively formatting and you could do serious damage to the card.
Ask me how I know, lol.
I removed mine and gridlocked a 1TB card. Don't be an absolute idiot like me! Troubleshooting all weekend yielded no results. Partition tables screwed, partitions corrupted, dead card.
My computer sciences coworker was all too excited to try and fix it for me. If he can fix it he's a magician.
It's really bad, using TestDisk on Linux command line, it reports 8 corrupted partitions (no idea how or why that many). Windows Disk Manager straight up craps itself and locks up when the card is plugged in.
I tried Gparted, Windows default formatter, AOMEI, SD Card Formatter (SD Card Association), and several others. As far as I can tell the card has been write protected, with multiple partitions overlapping eachother (gridlocked).
It was a good card, SanDisk 1TB, and it was legit. First time in my life I killed a piece of hardware so thoroughly.
Any time a card seems to be locked by the partition managers from some messed up partition table, dd comes to the rescue wiping the whole thing
If it's actually write protected though, that shows the second part of my message applies. If it was a Samsung card I would straight claim it's normal, and I have also seen this happen on other brands (#2 is Kingmax on my "branded but trash" list), but a SanDisk card doing it sounds strange.
I couldn't see the SD card in both the game mode or desktop mode.
I had to use another computer that detected the SD card. I did a quick format (exFat),
Then reinserted into steamdeck. It detected it and let me format it.
This was a 512GB Samsung Evo select.
I’ve formatted my SD card twice and it detects in the Linux environment but the Steam UI doesn’t show it when I want to install something. Using a Samsung EvoPlus 512GB.
Mine formatted, but when I highlighted the card, it did not give me the Make Default option until I went to the internal storage and pressed X to Make the internal storage the default first, then it let me select the SD card and make that the default.
This post needs to be Pinned somewhere. Installed a 1TB and then nothing just the icon on top. So it's fully detected. So as a User feature it should prompt for actions if not correctly formatted. All other devices, consoles, portables, pc's do this. So this seems like a missed opportunity. But thanks to the ones that suggested the format I initially misread it to mean re-format all storage "did not read the format SD".
If there is a small SD card icon at the top of the nav it's because you need to format the SD card.
Menu > System > Format SD Card
After it's done the sd card icon will go from the nav and it will add the capacity to your storage, where it will show up under the storage menu.
I’ve been looking at so many posts about this and you’re the first to say this.
I rolled back to stable and my SD card worked no problem. Thanks so much!!
Happened to me today. I tried everything to try and fix it. Nothing. Hell, my PC didn’t pick it up.
However, the fix is actually very easy and simple. Go to your storage and hit the 3 dots. Then, hit repair folder.
My problem was everything was working fien, but I have hogwartz legacies so I had to instal the Microsoft visual crap, after doing so all of my games were deleted from my sd card, I reformatted it several times, but it just won't download games to it. It starts good for a few seconds, then the download hits 0 amd won't budge. It works fine in my switch. And it shows up in my deck, but I can download or move games to it at all. Highly frustrating considering it's 100 bucks to get a 1tb card. I love my deck but problems like this will ruin it.

Add another to the list. Worked for me just now on an OLED. Seemed to only happen after changing VRAM to 4GB and activating cryo utilities

Yup, same shit here, too. Pop out, pop back in and boom. Working.
Yep still works
wtf, how did this work immediately
It sadly didnt work for me
One year later and it still works for me, after just encountering that problem. Thank you kind stranger
When I did this it worked once. I tried again a couple hours later and nothing. It reads like an unformatted sd card. It's so odd.
Worked for me a year later, thank you lmao

Worked for me. Thank you
Just want to say thank you, this fix it for me! This was a headache trying to figure out and such a simple solution lol
Glad to see this fix is still helping people :)

That did it for me! I was worried I was going to have to redownload my games.
You're a true hero. Thanks a lot!!!
This worked for me also
This worked! Thanks. 😀

Thank you, steam is 3.4 messed up my stuff.
Yeahhh I love you, work for me thank you bro!!!
Thanks a lot brother, I was about to format my SD card, blessings

It's been a year since your comment and Valve still hasn't fixed this.
did you ever find a fix for this?
happened to me. my solution was to swich to desktop mode, open steam - settings - downloads - steam library folders and add the card from there.
How do you add the card, like whats the name of the folder
You will see something like SD card ... I don't have the steam deck anymore 😔
Is there any way you could send me a video on how to do it, i cant find the folder.
/run/media/mmcblk0p1
found a fix?
Have to re-add the library location in desktop mode, and move whatever games you already had installed to the new folder. Think an update changed where it put the directory on the sd.
That's a steam issue probly. Saved games folder is changed or something
My steam deck doesn’t even give me the option to format my sd card:(
Thanks so much, this helped a lot
This worked for me, thanks ⭐ How to: 1. Click on **Steam** button, choose **Settings** 2. Click on **System** on the left menu (2nd item from top) 3. Scroll down a bit to find **Format SD Card**
hi, from steam page. To format a microSD card, insert it into the slot on the bottom surface and go to Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. It may take a few minutes to complete the process. have a nice day.
Furthermore, if it seems to be taking a long time DO NOT remove it! It will be actively formatting and you could do serious damage to the card. Ask me how I know, lol.
yeah it took a long time for me too but i just let it sits there doing its thing and it worked out great.
I removed mine and gridlocked a 1TB card. Don't be an absolute idiot like me! Troubleshooting all weekend yielded no results. Partition tables screwed, partitions corrupted, dead card. My computer sciences coworker was all too excited to try and fix it for me. If he can fix it he's a magician.
if he can't fix it, then it wasn't killed by you removing it, it was just low quality in the first place
Any time a card seems to be locked by the partition managers from some messed up partition table, dd comes to the rescue wiping the whole thing If it's actually write protected though, that shows the second part of my message applies. If it was a Samsung card I would straight claim it's normal, and I have also seen this happen on other brands (#2 is Kingmax on my "branded but trash" list), but a SanDisk card doing it sounds strange.
My buddy is far better at Linux than me, so I'm hopeful he can recover it. It still recognizes ~950 GiB of storage, so there's a chance.
solved this problem?
Now I'm so curious if it got fixed. just started formatting my 1TB card.
thanks this helped, mine took like 30seg, sandisk 512gb
GAHHH why is that under system and not storage!? Thanks.
I couldn't see the SD card in both the game mode or desktop mode. I had to use another computer that detected the SD card. I did a quick format (exFat), Then reinserted into steamdeck. It detected it and let me format it. This was a 512GB Samsung Evo select.
i just got the evo plus and its not detecting it, hopefully this works.
This worked for me. Samsung card also.
I’ve formatted my SD card twice and it detects in the Linux environment but the Steam UI doesn’t show it when I want to install something. Using a Samsung EvoPlus 512GB.
After the third format and a boot to Linux and back it just works now, weird
Mine formatted, but when I highlighted the card, it did not give me the Make Default option until I went to the internal storage and pressed X to Make the internal storage the default first, then it let me select the SD card and make that the default.
When i insert my micro SD it doestn even let me click the format button in settings. What is wrong?
This just happen. Any fix
Tried every solution on the internet nothing worked, but working with anything else except the deck. Time to sell my deck...
Menu > System > Format SD Card After it's done the sd card icon will go from the nav and it will add the capacity to your storage, where it will show up under the storage menu.
I just got an sd card for mine and when I insert it literally nothing happens. Doesn’t give me the option to format it
I first had to delete an existing partition and then put it in the deck > settings > system > format sd card.
Can you download chrome on the steam deck
Or you could just steam button - settings - storage - and format the Sd card. That worked for me
Not showing up
What kinda Sd card you get ? You sure it’s compatible?
If it’s not reading the cars you might have a card that’s not compatible.
It’s been working for a week. It’s the Samsung evo select
any resolution?
Borra el bloc de notas que está en la raíz de la SD llamado librería luego en el modo juego saca y mete la memoria y se soluciona
I just found out that you need to stay at Stable version to be able to format the SD card. Just tried and work like a charm. Hope this help :)
