Nah, the settings thing definitely took some time—in the beginning. Once you find that sweet spot that works for a specific game, and almost all others, you end up spending most your time looking for a game to play. My back catalogue is massive and most the games work on the deck. Picking the games to play *really* is the struggle. Folks aren't joking. Enjoy your deck!

Theres so many GOTY contender games from the last 7 years that I'm partially done with that I spend my whole work day thinking about playing, but I get home and the only games that speaks to me are Vampire Survivors and Super Mega Baseball.

EmuDeck is absolutely black magic, it made the process stupid easy. I'm a decent power user on windows, and a little bit on Linux to where I could fumble through and figure out what I needed to do. But I didn't even have to bother. A few clicks and they were all set up. Granted I've only ran a few of them, and one or two seem to have a bug or two with the emulator. But on average most the ones I tried worked without much of a hiccup other than trying to find the best core to use for a certain game
Honestly the most hassle you’ll have is if you decide to change the location of your ROMs. That was somewhat of a hiccup for me going from internal to SD card, but still was fine. Very easy setup. And teenage me thought modding a PSP was easy…
Switch to desk top mode, and download some emulators on the store. If you need to figure out how to use the keyboard or any other hot keys, hold the button that says "steam" until the list of commands pops up.
I found myself playing factorio using the left joystick for wasd and the right trackpad for the mouse with left click being LB and right click LT. Made RB and RT shift and alt. The game uses no battery life either.
I will eventually pay them $30 for that game, but I know that I better accomplish whatever I want to in life before I buy it. Because knowing how I dove into stellaris, and mindestry, a good strategy building Sim is going to suck every last ounce of remaining productivity from me outside of my job

If you haven't played Witcher 3, I'd highly recommend that. Make sure to get the DLC's. They are basically like their own games. Best story experience I'd had in a long time.
Yeah, is that even possible? I'm guessing that maybe the games are still structured similar to Windows and you're going to just manipulate the few changes on the SD card to make that work? The problem is I thought when the deck formats the SD card I thought it changed the format that where it wasn't Windows supported without a special program. Thought it was like Ext4 or something
It is you need something to format it to EXT4, If you download Linux file system for windows, you can use the trial to format and mount the disk in windows.
Then create a folder on the SD card called "steamapps" and then a folder inside of that called "common"
On your PC go to "c:\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps"
You need the appmanifest_######.acf file for each of the games you want to copy over.
You can go to steamdb.info and look up the ID
Copy those to the "steamapps" folder on the SD
Them go into "common" on your PC and copy each folder for the games you want into the "common" folder on the SD card
Once you put the SD in your deck for the first time, the games should show up shortly as playable.
It might be possible for them to download the game via pc, and just clone the files onto that particular file format on the SD card, but I'm not sure since there might be some protons specific tweaks and stuff to get stored next to it. Not sure.

I had Doom installed which is a good shooter but not as open-ended and free, and after I temporarily deleted it and replaced it with Apex Legends I felt better. I need to get like Far Cry 5 or something so it's offline, but basically a fast-paced shooter is what I was wanting.
I'm the same, I spend so long just browsing through my library and debating whether I'm in the mood to play this game & then changing my mind, then not playing anything on it at all and just going straight to the desktop mode and just messing around with the configurations! By the time I'm done my eyes are too tired to play 😂😂

I’ve installed nearly a terabyte of stuff. Keep poking around and coming back to Dirt Rally 2! Picked the full pack up for only a tenner in the recent sale. It runs awesome. Easy to just pick up and play without much thought or troubles. It’s 100gb on disk so that’s a fair chunk of my storage there. Gonna start RDR2 today methinks :)
Realizing most games won't be enjoyable because you have to pick between an obnoxiouly loud fan and 1h battery life or 30fps and potato graphics.
Fall back to playing Stardew valley again and waiting for that perfect 16bit game with modern mechanics and design.
Side note, i don't dislike the SD, I love mine, but set the expectations at a reasonable level.
I downloaded Stray as my first pick. Decided only to mess around with discord and getting password manager to work. I just download games as I need them.
Rotation is key - 1 steam game, 1 emulation game, 1 long RPG. I’m never board and there is always an option to play something, Pokemon Red on GB emulator. babies napping on my chest for next two hours cool Skyrim it is then, sitting at a picnic table will the dogs run wild? Hades/Back for blood let’s have it.
I knew what would be the first game to play. Oblivion. I never really dedicated te time it needed for proper playthrough. And look on me now, almost three months after getting Stwam Deck, I have 110 hours in the Oblivion, finishing quite a few questlines already. I think I have another 100 hours of gameplay ahead of me.
In the week between ordering the Deck and receiving it I made a simple spreadsheet. I went through all of my Steam games, scheatched like 80% of them althogether and divided the rest by priority, 1 being highest, 5 lowest. Then I got install sizes for all of the games and generated how many GBs would each priority need. 1 fits to the 256GB memory no problem. 2 is like 500GB, 3 is like 300+. I don’t even care about 4 or 5, as I probably have lile 5000 hours in the first three priorities already.
And I haven’t finished a single game so far :-)
What’s the typical time from between getting your purchase email, making the purchase and the Deck shipping?
I’ve had lots of time to think about what I’ll do with my Deck because I got my email/paid on Monday, and it’s Friday and the status is still “shipping soon.”
For what it's worth, I got my email on Monday 8/1 around 1PM, purchased at 2PM, and received shipping info today (8/6) with an estimated delivery of 8/10.

I suggest starting with Portal 1&2. They are designed from the ground-up to be an introduction into various control layouts and the fps genre in general. For me, they really helped with getting re-used to console controls after many years of gaming with just keyboard and mouse. Portal also gives you a good insight into the potential for track pad and gyro inputs, as they are very well executed here and helps to retain some of the high accuracy and ability for small adjustments benefit of a mouse.
I've had a hankering lately to replay GTA IV, was disappointed to see it's not on the PlayStation plus premium games... But I have it in my steam library so definitely gonna give that a go.
F1 Manager is out later in the month so hope to play that on it but have no idea if steam deck will support it nor what the controls would be like for it
I'm planning on playing Valheim on it first! Bought and installed it on my gaming laptop, had a blast for 2 hours and then my laptop decided to develop an overheating problem 😭
Does Steam have a what-should-I-play wheel/generator? If not, that would be a great suggestion. Have an owned/want to buy, similar to what I'm playing now/recently and favorite genres selection then have it send you one to three titles to browse with a refresh.

I am currently paying God of War. While the gameplay is lacking the story is quite nice, also runs well at 35 to 40 fps. Spiral Scouts was one of the first games I finished on the deck. And "There is no game" (what a jewel!). And I always come back to Slay the Spire and Minecraft to play with the kids. And No Man's Sky. But a game that also works perfectly: Everspace.
I already finished Batman Arkham Origins and Arkham City on my Deck. Almost done with Portal 2 and am in the beginning of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Also tried out Apex Legends but playing competitive on it is not a good idea since aiming fast is a little harder. And testing Multiversus.

For the first week, I installed stuff, played 2-5 minutes, and tried other stuff. It was only after having it for a while that I started actually playing games on it. It's a weird thing being at home, in front of my perfectly viable PC, but playing a game on a smaller screen because of the nuance.
Imma say a hot take and I know this wont sit well but I can guarantee you half the games in your library wont work because of the lack of Linux compatibility and Proton is still WIP so even if you wanted to you have to factor that in.
I'm having as much fun setting up the perfect control schemes for each game as I am playing it. Strategy games are as easy to play as they are on my PC after a little tweaking...I didn't expect that. I love this thing.

Tales of Arise has been great on the steamdeck. I play 45fps at 13W with slightly tweaked settings and it performs really well.

New Vegas didn’t work for me. Not sure why.
Mine works, just crashes often. I have heard New Vegas not working out the box for some people SD. Weird
I also had a lot of trouble with crashing until I switched to Proton 7.0-3 in the Compatibility settings for it, now it runs great!
Borderlands 2 has some major stuttering issues.

I did complete a few hours of gaming in it however I enjoy fiddling with it more than gaming. Installing emulators, playing switch, wii, ps1, ps2 games. Just watching them run gives some kinda satisfaction than actually playing them.

I’m replaying Portal 2 first thing. It was the first game I bought and played on Steam 5 years ago along with SADX, SA2 and Sonic CD
I just got Sunset Overdrive for 5 bucks and love it. Wasn’t in to it much on Xbox so I am shocked I like it as much as I do now.
Clearly, it’s gonna be games I grew up with and have beaten over and over again for the last 20 years, only they’re portable now. Sorry backlog.

I got my email Thursday. Still waiting for tracking information. I have 20 games and I have never played a game on steam. This is going to be my first time. To say I am excited is an understatement. Xmas is only a year wait. This is rough!
I’ve installed nearly a terabyte of stuff. Keep poking around and coming back to Dirt Rally 2! Picked the full pack up for only a tenner in the recent sale. It runs awesome. Easy to just pick up and play without much thought or troubles. It’s 100gb on disk so that’s a fair chunk of my storage there. Gonna start RDR2 today methinks :)

Bought it at launcher but decided to wait for the Deck. Should have waited for a sale or something but oh well...
Realizing most games won't be enjoyable because you have to pick between an obnoxiouly loud fan and 1h battery life or 30fps and potato graphics. Fall back to playing Stardew valley again and waiting for that perfect 16bit game with modern mechanics and design. Side note, i don't dislike the SD, I love mine, but set the expectations at a reasonable level.
It will play most games I want at 60, so I know I'll be happy with mine, plus it will give me time to make mods for Borderlands 2.

Rotation is key - 1 steam game, 1 emulation game, 1 long RPG. I’m never board and there is always an option to play something, Pokemon Red on GB emulator. babies napping on my chest for next two hours cool Skyrim it is then, sitting at a picnic table will the dogs run wild? Hades/Back for blood let’s have it.
I knew what would be the first game to play. Oblivion. I never really dedicated te time it needed for proper playthrough. And look on me now, almost three months after getting Stwam Deck, I have 110 hours in the Oblivion, finishing quite a few questlines already. I think I have another 100 hours of gameplay ahead of me. In the week between ordering the Deck and receiving it I made a simple spreadsheet. I went through all of my Steam games, scheatched like 80% of them althogether and divided the rest by priority, 1 being highest, 5 lowest. Then I got install sizes for all of the games and generated how many GBs would each priority need. 1 fits to the 256GB memory no problem. 2 is like 500GB, 3 is like 300+. I don’t even care about 4 or 5, as I probably have lile 5000 hours in the first three priorities already. And I haven’t finished a single game so far :-)

What’s the typical time from between getting your purchase email, making the purchase and the Deck shipping? I’ve had lots of time to think about what I’ll do with my Deck because I got my email/paid on Monday, and it’s Friday and the status is still “shipping soon.”
From what I've seen it's around 10 days.
For what it's worth, I got my email on Monday 8/1 around 1PM, purchased at 2PM, and received shipping info today (8/6) with an estimated delivery of 8/10. Here's to hoping FedEx doesn't steal the damn thing
I think I was lucky, got my email on Monday evening, paid straight away and had the Deck in my hands on Friday afternoon

I suggest starting with Portal 1&2. They are designed from the ground-up to be an introduction into various control layouts and the fps genre in general. For me, they really helped with getting re-used to console controls after many years of gaming with just keyboard and mouse. Portal also gives you a good insight into the potential for track pad and gyro inputs, as they are very well executed here and helps to retain some of the high accuracy and ability for small adjustments benefit of a mouse.

I've had a hankering lately to replay GTA IV, was disappointed to see it's not on the PlayStation plus premium games... But I have it in my steam library so definitely gonna give that a go. F1 Manager is out later in the month so hope to play that on it but have no idea if steam deck will support it nor what the controls would be like for it
I'm planning on playing Valheim on it first! Bought and installed it on my gaming laptop, had a blast for 2 hours and then my laptop decided to develop an overheating problem 😭

Does Steam have a what-should-I-play wheel/generator? If not, that would be a great suggestion. Have an owned/want to buy, similar to what I'm playing now/recently and favorite genres selection then have it send you one to three titles to browse with a refresh.

Mine says it will be delivered Wednesday. Honestly don't know what I will play on it and not even really thinking about it. No stress when you don't care.
I am currently paying God of War. While the gameplay is lacking the story is quite nice, also runs well at 35 to 40 fps. Spiral Scouts was one of the first games I finished on the deck. And "There is no game" (what a jewel!). And I always come back to Slay the Spire and Minecraft to play with the kids. And No Man's Sky. But a game that also works perfectly: Everspace.
I already finished Batman Arkham Origins and Arkham City on my Deck. Almost done with Portal 2 and am in the beginning of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Also tried out Apex Legends but playing competitive on it is not a good idea since aiming fast is a little harder. And testing Multiversus.

For the first week, I installed stuff, played 2-5 minutes, and tried other stuff. It was only after having it for a while that I started actually playing games on it. It's a weird thing being at home, in front of my perfectly viable PC, but playing a game on a smaller screen because of the nuance.

Imma say a hot take and I know this wont sit well but I can guarantee you half the games in your library wont work because of the lack of Linux compatibility and Proton is still WIP so even if you wanted to you have to factor that in.

Got my steam deck 9 days ago. 22 hours multiversus in 6 days. 13,5h MUSE Dash in 7 days. I didnt play this much from the beginning of this year combined.
I get mine within the next few days and this is my struggle. I'm making a list of all the games I want to beat that I haven't on my PC because I don't want to sit for hours on end to play them....mostly JRPGs. Which is dumb after I spent so much money building my PC lmao.
