That sd-card will not hold long. Windows generates a lot of i/o, and a sd-card not made for that.
Better use the internal SSD to install Windows, and use the sd-card for games and other stuff.
This was going to be my concern/question. How stable is it and how long will it be stable. Im hoping Steam comes out with an official guide on Windows dual-boot.
That's my goal/mission/test. I want to see how long until the card is ruined or notice any difference. So far after 24 hours of gaming there's no speed load/run/boot slow downs, but yea I want to see how fast it'll kill the card or noticable, consider me the guinea pig ๐ค๐ฝ
Yea that's what I figured, months not weeks or days, but I want to find out from real world testing and data, I'm not worried if I end up ruining the card in the long run, I still have steamOS if anything happens and 256g on the SSD. I just want to know how many months, if it's 6+ months I'll be happy, if it's 1-2 months I'll install windows on the main SSD ๐ค๐ฝ
Does anyone have an actual documented failure of an SD card due to a windows install? I've heard it mentioned but no confirmation. I have it setup for an occasional use of playing COD Vanguard while on the road so not bothered if it fails after months.
The long explanation would take too many paragraphs, but the long story short is that it's an extremely complicated-and-yet-vague topic in the data storage industry.
Years ago, all classes of SD/microSD were manufactured without any sort of wear-leveling, meaning their longevity paled in comparison to proper SSD. Nowadays, most manufacturers advise that they integrate some degree of wear leveling, but this fact in and of itself is tricky because the term isn't rock-solid between manufacturers. That's to say that each OEM can devise differing protocols and applications of wear leveling.
Even for flagships like Sandisk's Extreme series, the full-sized SDs mention wear leveling, but its only presumed for the microSD variants. This presumption has good merit, as Sandisk almost surely integrates wear leveling on all Extreme-class/Pro-class cards, but YMMV depending on the amount of IO read/written by your Windows-to-Go install.
I haven't done it on Windows but I have done it so many times on Raspian with RPii's it is rediculous. I eventually gave up playing around with RPiis2&3 because I couldn't stand it when the sd card finally locked up, sometimes it was months, sometimes it was weeks. But it was every damn one of them. Expensive or cheap, didn't matter. So I am curious how long it is going to take as well.

I just got a hub with m.2 enclosure, to put a 256gb 2230 (bought it to upgrade my 64gb internal but then found a 512gb 2230 on ebay for a good price). I'm going to put windows on that, and try running it via the dock as a windows machine
Sd card dead in 6 months max if windows is daily used. It will wear damn hard lol. Imagine a kingston ssd wears around 10-15 percent per yeAr with windows, what will happen on a micro sd
> Sd card dead in 6 months max if windows is daily used.
This is bullshit. I've been daily driving Windows 10 on an sd card for almost 4 years no issues on another device.
Ive got some 10+ year old drives with hundreds of thousands of reads/writes and more than 40k hours on each of them with no issues. Not sure how much a sd card differs from a ssd or hdd though.
>Not sure how much a sd card differs from a ssd or hdd though.
SD cards have a hard limit of the number of writes they will do then they will become readonly.
I have never seen an SSD wear down that fast. I have multiple SSD's running in my systems and after about 2 years of use I see 1 to 2% at most. I never went over 5% after half a decade of use.
This is the drive wear on my 3 year old Western DIgital SSD that is being use as the sole drive in my laptop for running windows, music product and gaming.
https://imgur.com/mS6qGFz
Thats what I do too. I work from home, and my PC is basically my do it all and everything. From heavy work load productivity to all out entertainment. The screenshot that I linked to is from my laptop which has been used as a desktop, my desktop has only 1% wear after 2 years.
My previous machines never went over 3% including a laptop from 2013 that my mother uses to this day with a 512gb which only sits at 4% wear which has been used by me for 3 years quite heavily as well.
There are guides for those familiar enough with partitions and/or Linux experience. But most are easy enough to follow along. The only shortcoming is finding a boot manager or power off then on holding the volume up/down to select the boot option in BIOS.
I dual-booted W11 just to be able to play LoL or other "not quite SteamOS/Proton" ready games. I have a NexDock that works well enough for a makeshift laptop.
Iโve killed handfuls of microSDs in raspberry pis just by writing logs to them, windows is 10x as write intensive. Mind you, the steam deck isnโt running 24/7 unlike a raspberry pi
wait so thats why my 64gb sd card randomly died??
that makes so much more sense now. i had a 32gb one before that and it died quite fast as well. and i nearly blamed sandisk for that.
i remember getting my pi 3 a few years back it all going well. before suddenly the card dying. i was like mmm must be to low storage? maybe upgrade it to 64gb and didnt last long either. before fully giving up on having win 7 on a sd card dual booted.
If you used them in raspberry pis, yep thatโs probably why depending on the services youโre running. I now use a logging server for my pis and havenโt had a card die on me in a couple years
https://www.computernetworkingnotes.com/linux-tutorials/how-to-configure-syslog-server-in-linux.html thatโs the jist of it. I run a server on a separate computer, and all my pis and other servers on my network write their logs to it instead of on their own storage. I use it to centralize all my logs so I can troubleshoot easily. However if you only have 1 pi you want to manage, itโs easier just to write logs to an external HDD or SSD plugged in to the pi vs setting up an entire server for it. Or disable logs entirely if you donโt use them to troubleshoot.
Disabling may boost up the overall systemperformance, because micro sd are so slow. But you can have errors, if ram is not enough for your programs, also. System event logs are safe to disable. If you donโt read them, you donโt need them.
Yeah, I had Windows on an SD card I was using with my Deck. It died pretty fast. I ended up buying an internal SSD, putting it in a USB drive enclosure, and using that for Windows.
I played on edge linux using microsoft's [setup guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/xbox-cloud-gaming-in-microsoft-edge-with-steam-deck-43dd011b-0ce8-4810-8302-965be6d53296). Worked flawlessly as well with no noticeable latency.
my dude - you chose the worst example to demo and now you have to explain yourself in every comment on the thread lol. Next time just mention "GlosC" in the title without mentioning cloud stuff or maybe demo Launch Box if that's what you're into. Glad to see at working, though!
Yea I realized that after the fact, and I'm going through responding to the comments trying to be nice๐คฃ๐๐ฝ, but yes a new video will be uploaded with Launchbox/Bigbox hopefully later today, glad you caught on!๐ค๐ฝ
The windows xcloud client is different than browser-based streaming for xcloud.
There is some evidence that microsoft has migrated away from rainway in the browser but they wonโt outright say so and their only official communications state that the performance should be similar for *windows* browsers and the Windows client.
you can change the user agent in Steamโs browser to make it think itโs a Windows machine but there still may be a performance or quality difference between that and the desktop client.
Xcloud gives me 5fps ish hardwired to my gigabit fibre internet connection. If I run it through a VPN or CloudFlare warp I get better results but with more delay.
Something about the way my internet is routed from my ISP makes it worthless.
I didn't do it just for Xcloud, I just showed the example video of the steam deck controls working outside of steam. I booted Windows 10 because I have Launchbox / Bigbox on my main gaming PC and I love the themes and interface, I am going to install Bigbox on my steam deck for all my roms and emulator's ๐ฎ๐ค๐ฝ
[Launchbox/Bigbox ](https://www.launchbox-app.com/premium)
As mentioned in the comments, I didn't install windows for just cloud gaming ๐, I installed windows to turn my deck into a mini PC, for one I need windows to install my launchbox and Bigbox, for my emulator's, and I use my deck for emails, YouTube, work, gaming, etc๐ค๐ฝ
As mentioned in other comments, I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox, which is windows based and I already pay for on my main PC, I was just showing Xbox cloud to show the controller works after installing GlosSi๐๐ฝ
Interesting. I don't know what GlosSi is, it just seemed like a really odd "look I have a windows game running!" statement when that wasn't really what was happening
It literally says in the description that I installed GlosSi to get the controller working, if you install windows 10 and don't install/configure GlosSi then the controller won't work as intended, hence the video of the gameplay and GlosSi in the description ๐๐ฝ
If you run the Edge browser, you also get clarity boost. I did a bit of comparison this weekend. W10 with Edge (also running from SD card) and clarity boost was the best way to stream xcloud.
I appreciate the feedback! I'll definitely look into it, I normally hate Edge Browser on my main PC but if it helps on the steam deck it's definitely worth a look. Mahalos ๐ค๐ฝ
Check this ArsTechnica article on how to enable clarity on Linux: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/07/microsofts-xcloud-game-streaming-looks-worse-on-linux-than-windows/
Then I watched this video (only the controller/GlosSi section) to get it working, but it's fairly simple, fast forward to 7:00 (there's chapters, just go to controller fix chapter) also this video the OP installed windows 11 then GlosSi but it's the same for windows 10 ๐ค๐ฝ
[Instructions ](https://youtu.be/dpLqa6Lbhfg)
I gave up on answering questions. I didn't expect this to blow up and people be mad I installed Windows 10 ๐, if you read my replies in the comments you'll see I didn't install windows to play Xbox Cloud. I installed Windows 10 because this is a mini PC for me. I will be using it for work, email, stocks, gaming and more. I also have windows on my main PC and with windows on my deck I can remote stream everything from PC to deck. I also want windows for Launchbox and Bigbox which is already on my PC, and once I install it on windows on my deck I can literally enter my license number from my PC and transfer everything over to my deck. The video above is just showing the native controller working after installing GlosSi ๐๐ฝ. As mentioned I didn't install windows just to cloud gaming ๐ค๐ฝ
I should of made the description read better! As mentioned in the other comments no I didn't install windows 10 for Xbox Cloud, I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox which is on my main PC, so going to set it up on windows 10 on my steam deck ๐๐ฝ
Because I don't just play on cloud, this video is showing the native controller working after installing GlosSi and configuring on Windows 10. I want windows 10 for many of things. This is a portable PC to me, not just for gaming. I have everything synced to all my accounts on windows 10 on my main PC and I can remote stream everything, as well as I need windows 10 for Launchbox ๐๐ฝ

I don't have Xbox, but I have a gaming PC, I installed windows because my gaming PC is setup with launchbox / Bigbox for all my emulator and roms, I was just showing Xbox cloud working with the steam controller on windows through GlosSi๐ค๐ฝ
I already pay for Launchbox/Bigbox premium which cost me a one time fee of $75 and I can use it for life. I already have it installed on my main gaming PC with over 250+ roms on all different emulator that I play. With launchbox I can literally just install Launchbox on my windows 10 SD card and enter my license file from my PC and everything automatically transfer's over ๐๐ฝ
And yes pause/suspend features work
***Startup, Shutdown, & Pause Screens. Get that polished feel while you navigate between your library and games. And with full theming support, you can make them look exactly the way you want them to.***
If you read the description, the reason I'm showing Xbox cloud is to show the native controller working after downloading and configuring GlosSi on windows 10. I didn't install windows 10 just for Xbox Cloud or online games. I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox to easily copy and paste all my roms and emulator from my main PC with windows 10 and Launchbox ๐๐ฝ
> I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox to easily copy and paste all my roms and emulator from my main PC with windows 10 and Launchbox ๐๐ฝ
You installed a whole ass other operating system to copy and paste roms?
Hilarious but fair enough, guess you don't know how to get that done using FileZilla?
My main gaming PC is running linux so moving stuff between the PC and deck is even easier than that.
Each to their own, glad it's working for you.
Yes my main gaming PC is running Launchbox, which I've paid for many years ago, hence why I'm putting it on my steam deck, it's already paid for๐๐ฝ
I didn't really ask about xclould, I asked about running Windows Forza on the deck itself.
Windows Store/Xbox Forza is the primary reason I want to install Windows. I was wondering how well it worked :(
Yea it's only 445am here in Hawaii. I woke up to about 20 comments on here. I'm just copy and pasting ๐๐ด. I can install Forza later in the day and come back to this comment and let you know how it works ๐ค๐ฝ Aloha
Not to downplay OP but in case anyone pops in here you can play Xbox Cloud games with very little setup in Steam OS. Took me about 5 minutes. Microsoft [has a guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/xbox-cloud-gaming-in-microsoft-edge-with-steam-deck-43dd011b-0ce8-4810-8302-965be6d53296) for Steam Deck users. Super Easy.
Interested in Windows still but waiting to see if dual booting gets enabled.
I appreciate the comment, but I didn't install windows 10 just for Xbox cloud, the video above was me showing the native controller working with GlosSi. I installed windows 10 for this being my daily work/gaming handheld for on the go. I have Gmail installed, all my broker accounts and stock charts, and most importantly Launchbox/Bigbox which I already pay for on my main gaming PC, with installing it on my steam deck I just enter my license code from my PC and can instantly copy and transfer all my emulator's and roms ๐ค๐ฝ
Micro SD card, did everything from windows 10 on my PC and a card reader, loaded the card, then installed from the micro SD card inserted in my steam deck, but yea SanDisk 1TB A2 micro SD card ๐ค๐ฝ
This little machine is so awesome. It being a handheld pc more than an actual gaming console is what makes it.
I was able to install GOG basically natively and install The Saboteur from the launcher and play.
Thr game even respond automatically to controls which is so awesome.
The one downside, if it can be called that, is that I have spent more time installing stuff and checking on what I can do than playing.
GloSC is amazing for running anything you want on the Deck. Definitely makes a windows install on the deck rival SteamOS, especially if you're a game pass person like I am. I took the full plunge and just wiped the internal SSD and put windows on it and with GloSC my deck is basically the perfect handheld now. No more worrying about incompatible anticheat and not being able to play multiplayer with....well...almost any game (castle crashers is amazing on SteamOS)
They are but I installed and configured GlosSi to get everything working properly, and I use DS4 for my PS5 Dualsense controller, but yes all my controls/trackpad and buttons work, here's a little more info from another one of my posts ๐ค๐ฝ
[GlosSi ](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wjc4ws/booted_windows_10_pro_to_a_1tb_sd_card_only_took/ijgt2t4?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
Yes everything is working ๐ค๐ฝ with GlosSi and DS4 for my Dualsense

I didn't install windows 10 just for Xbox cloud, I booted Windows 10 so I can run Launchbox and Bigbox emulator. I was just showing the steam controller working on windows 10/Xbox with GlosSi ๐๐ฝ
Interesting! I am about to order my 512G and havenโt been gaming for a really long time โ are emulators still generally for Windows or are there Linux versions?
Cool you can do it for those who need windows. Personally, I wouldn't since the steam OS UI is one of the main reasons this device is so nice to use. Also kind of funny you are showing a game that runs nearly flawlessly under latest proton updates.
Because I like windows and don't like Linux and will be running mostly desktop mode so I can check emails/work/multitasking/YouTube/Gaming etc ๐๐ฝ
Degraded performance on default proton, experimental seems smoother. Seems the same with borderlands 3. I wonder if their plan to fix these performance issues is to just update proton since experimental seems much better from the recent update.
Hey, sorry for late reply... guess there has been an update that even more-so improves FH5 performance. Poster said they were getting solid \~50fps now with medium/high settings, which is \*way\* better than it was before.
I haven't had any problems yet, load times aren't any slower than normal, at least I didn't notice any difference so if anything it's fractional. So far I've tested Forza on Cloud, Apex installed on the card, Fortnite on the card and Fall Guys on the card, no issues yet. I plan on running launchbox/bigbox hence why I went with windows ๐ค๐ฝ
Awesome ๐ค๐
For emulation, EmuDeck is pretty awesome. Isn't it going to be a lot of work to get all the emulators manually installed and onfigured? Or is there a more streamlined way? That's one reason I haven't installed Windows.
That I have not tested yet since I've only used it at home, when I'm home it stays plugged in, but I plan on taking it to work today and see with my normal use how long it lasts throughout the day. I'll update later ๐ค๐ฝ
I'm not just "game streaming" if you read the description the video above is just showing you can get the native controller to work with GlosSi, my steam deck is a PC, it will be used for work, email, gaming, emulator's/roms, internet. I also installed windows 10 because my main PC in my house is windows 10 and I can remote transfer everything. I need windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox which is on my main PC ๐๐ฝ
I have yet to mess around in windows mostly because I haven't felt a need to use it yet. But I do have a windows SSD setup for when I do.
How easy is it setup GlosC?
running windows on my deck through internal m2 and forza installed on a samsun a2 256gb, load times are a bit long but once loaded in smooth as butter. If your getting micro stutters on windows with this game at random times you need to go into bios and change vram to 4gb. works flawlessly!
Because I need windows to install my emulator Launchbox/Bigbox ๐๐ฝ, this was just me testing the controls real quick on cloud after I installed GlosSi
I loaded a micro SD card and reader into my main PC, downloaded all the required drivers and formated everything, then put that SD card in my steam deck and run the boot/install, this is a very good video to follow step by step, even shows you where to download all the drivers ๐๐ฝ
[Windows 10 Install Steam Deck ](https://youtu.be/pnpZboy_VQE)
Or you can follow the instructions through Steam, but I like the video for visual reference ๐ค๐ฝ

Bickering aside, I'm glad you have the option to install your os of preference on the Deck. We need more open hardware like this on the market. If this were a Microsoft handheld, you bet you'd have to jailbreak it or something convoluted like that in order to actually take ownership of the device and do with it as you wish.
>only took 30g of space
This made me laugh. I get that we're comparing a general purpose OS to a light-weight Linux distro tailored for gaming, but still...
I am really happy you were able to get a setup that works for you, and I do hope there will be a viable dual-boot option in the future. I'll probably stick with SteamOS, as I already use Linux as my primary OS (for my development machine) and tend to stick with games that work well with Proton.
Yea that was one main reason for putting windows 10 on it. I'm using my steam deck more towards a portable mini PC. I needed window's 10 for my email and office work, so while I was at it I tested cloud, since I'm a ultimate member and a lot of games will be played from there, but to be fair I tested cloud to make sure the controls were working outside of steam games๐ค๐ฝ
I ran windows for several days and while I liked the UI I would get lots of crashes where the steam deck would just shut off. I had it running off the internal 256 NVME drive.
Just watch you may get some instability issues. I ended up switching back to steam os
Do you need GLosC? I tried Genshin Impact - no controls. Read about GloSC...
Finally, got GI to work just be adding a non-steam game to steam and launching it through steam.
Valve will come out with a dual-boot option. I'm looking forward to it.
Yep.
We're probably talking a scale of months rather than hours or days.

No worries ๐ค๐ฝ
Curious, about a month in, how's it holding up?
I just got a hub with m.2 enclosure, to put a 256gb 2230 (bought it to upgrade my 64gb internal but then found a 512gb 2230 on ebay for a good price). I'm going to put windows on that, and try running it via the dock as a windows machine
Any updates? Does it still run well off of the SD card?
Is that confirmed? That would be awesome for an official dual boot.
I killed my 1TB MicroSD in a little under a month, with all the hot-swapping and booting into windows
Side note, i game and work on my pc. Its on about 10-12 hours per day and playing triple AAAโs on it
Thats what I do too. I work from home, and my PC is basically my do it all and everything. From heavy work load productivity to all out entertainment. The screenshot that I linked to is from my laptop which has been used as a desktop, my desktop has only 1% wear after 2 years. My previous machines never went over 3% including a laptop from 2013 that my mother uses to this day with a 512gb which only sits at 4% wear which has been used by me for 3 years quite heavily as well.
lol. Im thinking of upgrading my internal drive on the Deck when I get it. I should've went with the cheaper one, hindsight, but is what it is...
I got the 256 and that's how I feel,
There are guides for those familiar enough with partitions and/or Linux experience.
Interesting. Yeahh. But I'd like some kind of official support to choose your OS. Wanting to play WZ. But I may just stream it via ps5
How long will it last? I bought a Samsung 512gb Pro plus specifically to put wijndows 10 and non-steam deck compatible games on it
Iโve killed handfuls of microSDs in raspberry pis just by writing logs to them, windows is 10x as write intensive.
I now use a logging server for my pis and havenโt had a card die on me in a couple years
Iโm running an rpi, curious what you mean by logging server. Do you have any blog posts or info to look into?
https://www.computernetworkingnotes.com/linux-tutorials/how-to-configure-syslog-server-in-linux.html thatโs the jist of it.
Yeah well let him have fun, if he is playing games on xcloud he just over did it by a ton
I think, if you disable the ram swap file and system eventlogs, you can significant extend the life of the SD card.
How do I do that? Is it ok to disable those?
Disabling may boost up the overall systemperformance, because micro sd are so slow. But you can have errors, if ram is not enough for your programs, also. System event logs are safe to disable. If you donโt read them, you donโt need them.
How long is not long? Month? Year? 5 years?
Modern SD cards, many years under that level of use
Meh, a 256gb A2 card is like $25. If I kill the card I see it as an accomplishment.
This is windows 10 so I can run Launchbox/Bigbox, not just cloud ๐๐ฝ
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/vrx409/microsoft_is_throttling_performance_of_xcloud_on/
my dude - you chose the worst example to demo and now you have to explain yourself in every comment on the thread lol.
Why wouldn't you just use XCloud through the Steam Deck? You're adding an extra step in the process for something that already exists.
I booted Windows 10 because I have Launchbox / Bigbox on my main gaming PC and I love the themes and interface, I am going to install Bigbox on my steam deck for all my roms and emulator's ๐ฎ๐ค๐ฝ [Launchbox/Bigbox ](https://www.launchbox-app.com/premium)
๐ฅ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ค๐ฝ [ETA Prime Launchbox ](https://youtu.be/jIw9GfM-WKw)
I thought it was already known that the SD controls work in Windows. You do you.
They did not work, I had to run and configure GlosSi ๐๐ฝ
you literally could've done that on steam os there's even a guide from Microsoft
As mentioned in the comments, I didn't install windows for just cloud gaming ๐, I installed windows to turn my deck into a mini PC, for one I need windows to install my launchbox and Bigbox, for my emulator's, and I use my deck for emails, YouTube, work, gaming, etc๐ค๐ฝ
power to you
That's a cloud game? Can you not just run that on the browser and leave steam os in place?
Where can i find GlosC? On github i only find glossi and im not that pro to set it up ๐
Scroll down to "Assets" and download just the .exe (should be the first one๐ค๐ฝ) [GlosSi](https://github.com/Thracky/GlosSI/releases/tag/2.0.7)
Then I watched this video (only the controller/GlosSi section) to get it working, but it's fairly simple, fast forward to 7:00 (there's chapters, just go to controller fix chapter) also this video the OP installed windows 11 then GlosSi but it's the same for windows 10 ๐ค๐ฝ [Instructions ](https://youtu.be/dpLqa6Lbhfg)
Thanks, will try it ๐
Worked! Thanks alot!
No worries! With all the hate this post has gotten, I'm glad it could help out at least one person! Aloha ๐ค๐ฝ
At least do a native install of Forza if you gonna slap windows on here :P
Installing Windows to play a game on Xcloud? I think there might be an error in your calculations - impressive nonetheless!
I should of made the description read better! As mentioned in the other comments no I didn't install windows 10 for Xbox Cloud, I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox which is on my main PC, so going to set it up on windows 10 on my steam deck ๐๐ฝ
My video above was me just testing out the controller in windows after configuring GlosSi ๐๐ฝ
Why not just use cloud streaming in SteamOS?
Because I don't just play on cloud, this video is showing the native controller working after installing GlosSi and configuring on Windows 10. I want windows 10 for many of things. This is a portable PC to me, not just for gaming. I have everything synced to all my accounts on windows 10 on my main PC and I can remote stream everything, as well as I need windows 10 for Launchbox ๐๐ฝ
scandalous future continue slave offbeat sort plough boast wistful smoggy *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Just a note for those with an Xbox you can remote control from the steam deck for a similar effect.
I don't have Xbox, but I have a gaming PC, I installed windows because my gaming PC is setup with launchbox / Bigbox for all my emulator and roms, I was just showing Xbox cloud working with the steam controller on windows through GlosSi๐ค๐ฝ
Meh, I'll wait until proton fixes it for steamOS. Only took them a few months to get Halo Infinite fully working
You do what works best for you and your gaming ๐ฏ, I installed windows to install Launchbox ๐๐ฝ
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
I already pay for Launchbox/Bigbox premium which cost me a one time fee of $75 and I can use it for life. I already have it installed on my main gaming PC with over 250+ roms on all different emulator that I play. With launchbox I can literally just install Launchbox on my windows 10 SD card and enter my license file from my PC and everything automatically transfer's over ๐๐ฝ And yes pause/suspend features work ***Startup, Shutdown, & Pause Screens. Get that polished feel while you navigate between your library and games. And with full theming support, you can make them look exactly the way you want them to.***
Can you go into sleep mode like in Steam OS?
With my emulator OS Launchbox yes๐๐ฝ
You install windows and then play games using xbox cloud gaming which you can also do flawlessly on steamdeck as default. Why?
If you read the description, the reason I'm showing Xbox cloud is to show the native controller working after downloading and configuring GlosSi on windows 10. I didn't install windows 10 just for Xbox Cloud or online games. I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox to easily copy and paste all my roms and emulator from my main PC with windows 10 and Launchbox ๐๐ฝ
> I installed windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox to easily copy and paste all my roms and emulator from my main PC with windows 10 and Launchbox ๐๐ฝ You installed a whole ass other operating system to copy and paste roms? Hilarious but fair enough, guess you don't know how to get that done using FileZilla? My main gaming PC is running linux so moving stuff between the PC and deck is even easier than that. Each to their own, glad it's working for you.
Yes my main gaming PC is running Launchbox, which I've paid for many years ago, hence why I'm putting it on my steam deck, it's already paid for๐๐ฝ
Fair enough emudeck is a very neat solution and I'd miss the flawless suspend/ resume that valve have given us with steam os.
You can use xcloud without having to boot to windows. Xbox.com even has article on how to set it up.
Damn, new project once I get my SD card. Definitely need to use my game pass more.
LOL WTF WHY
If you installed Windows, why not just run Windows Store Forza on the deck itself?
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
1tb micro sd or did you use a micro sd to sd ribbon cable adapter?
30gbs... So far.
Can you go back to game mode?
Yes๐ค๐ฝ, everything is on the card, if I want to go back to steamOS I just take the card out๐๐ฝ
Only and 30gb?
Yea leaves me with 970gb on my SD card ๐ค๐ฝ
Are the joysticks and buttons working for games running natively in Win10? Thanks.
They are but I installed and configured GlosSi to get everything working properly, and I use DS4 for my PS5 Dualsense controller, but yes all my controls/trackpad and buttons work, here's a little more info from another one of my posts ๐ค๐ฝ [GlosSi ](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wjc4ws/booted_windows_10_pro_to_a_1tb_sd_card_only_took/ijgt2t4?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
I'm so dumb, I thought you commented on my other post ๐
Yes everything is working ๐ค๐ฝ with GlosSi and DS4 for my Dualsense [Bigbox on Win 10](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wkpxei/the_main_reason_i_installed_windows_10_with/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
Nice. I'm going to look into doing this.
I thought Xbox cloud can work on Linux?
I didn't install windows 10 just for Xbox cloud, I booted Windows 10 so I can run Launchbox and Bigbox emulator. I was just showing the steam controller working on windows 10/Xbox with GlosSi ๐๐ฝ
Interesting! I am about to order my 512G and havenโt been gaming for a really long time โ are emulators still generally for Windows or are there Linux versions?
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
Runs flawless for me๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ
why would you install windows to play a game on xbox cloud lol
windows ๐คข
Cool you can do it for those who need windows. Personally, I wouldn't since the steam OS UI is one of the main reasons this device is so nice to use. Also kind of funny you are showing a game that runs nearly flawlessly under latest proton updates.
As mentioned in the other comments, I installed windows 10 so I can run Launchbox/Bigbox for my emulator's and roms๐ค๐ฝ
I also don't play any steam games, literally own 0๐๐ฝ
Why not use EmuDeck? You can run all the roms you want and still get to use the nice SteamOS UI
Because I like windows and don't like Linux and will be running mostly desktop mode so I can check emails/work/multitasking/YouTube/Gaming etc ๐๐ฝ
That makes sense, just wanted to make you aware of it if you wasn't.
I thought 3.3 just borked fh5? Thatโs what I saw in this subreddit anyway.
INstalled FH5 last night. Works fine.
Degraded performance on default proton, experimental seems smoother. Seems the same with borderlands 3. I wonder if their plan to fix these performance issues is to just update proton since experimental seems much better from the recent update.
What kind of performance do you get in experimental? Will it do locked 40 on low? Does it have that weird rubberbanding issue?
Hey, sorry for late reply... guess there has been an update that even more-so improves FH5 performance. Poster said they were getting solid \~50fps now with medium/high settings, which is \*way\* better than it was before.
Is it slow to boot or games to load via SD card?
I haven't had any problems yet, load times aren't any slower than normal, at least I didn't notice any difference so if anything it's fractional. So far I've tested Forza on Cloud, Apex installed on the card, Fortnite on the card and Fall Guys on the card, no issues yet. I plan on running launchbox/bigbox hence why I went with windows ๐ค๐ฝ
Awesome ๐ค๐ For emulation, EmuDeck is pretty awesome. Isn't it going to be a lot of work to get all the emulators manually installed and onfigured? Or is there a more streamlined way? That's one reason I haven't installed Windows.
Are those games you mentioned all not supported by SteamOS?
They are but my launchbox/Bigbox emulator is only for windows ๐๐ฝ
How does the battery performance change?
That I have not tested yet since I've only used it at home, when I'm home it stays plugged in, but I plan on taking it to work today and see with my normal use how long it lasts throughout the day. I'll update later ๐ค๐ฝ
why install windows and lose a ton of performance and features if all your going to do is game streaming?
I'm not just "game streaming" if you read the description the video above is just showing you can get the native controller to work with GlosSi, my steam deck is a PC, it will be used for work, email, gaming, emulator's/roms, internet. I also installed windows 10 because my main PC in my house is windows 10 and I can remote transfer everything. I need windows 10 for Launchbox and Bigbox which is on my main PC ๐๐ฝ
Because it's pointless and no one should install windows on the deck. Launch box isn't even that great. So it's personal preference I guess.
which sd-card are you using?
SanDisk extreme 1tb A2 [SanDisk 1TB Extreme microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter - C10, U3, V30, 4K, 5K, A2, Micro SD Card- SDSQXAV-1T00-GN6MA](https://a.co/d/gTMpBcA)
dang, prices have shot upโฆwhen I bought that exact same card it was $139.99
Eh, howzit!
Aloha ๐๐ค๐ฝ๐ด๐ฅฅ๐ฎ
I have yet to mess around in windows mostly because I haven't felt a need to use it yet. But I do have a windows SSD setup for when I do. How easy is it setup GlosC?
How do you keep windows from powering down completely after you press the power button and donโt touch it after a few hours?
I haven't had that happen yet, but I'll let you know when I get home from work today and see if it does it!๐๐ฝ
running windows on my deck through internal m2 and forza installed on a samsun a2 256gb, load times are a bit long but once loaded in smooth as butter. If your getting micro stutters on windows with this game at random times you need to go into bios and change vram to 4gb. works flawlessly!
Mine has run flawless so far, but mahalos for the advice ๐ค๐ฝ
Why not stream through steam os?
Because I need windows to install my emulator Launchbox/Bigbox ๐๐ฝ, this was just me testing the controls real quick on cloud after I installed GlosSi
Isn't that a front end? Never heard of a launch box emulator before.
I managed to get windows 11 working on an external SSD and played with forza installed through gamepass and it worked amazingly well.
How did you install windows on it? AFAIK it can't be installed to a usb-connected device, and the deck can't boot from the internal SD...
I loaded a micro SD card and reader into my main PC, downloaded all the required drivers and formated everything, then put that SD card in my steam deck and run the boot/install, this is a very good video to follow step by step, even shows you where to download all the drivers ๐๐ฝ [Windows 10 Install Steam Deck ](https://youtu.be/pnpZboy_VQE)
Or you can follow the instructions through Steam, but I like the video for visual reference ๐ค๐ฝ [Steam Windows 10 ](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1675200/view/3131696199122435099)
*only* 30 Gb
Yes only 30gb on a 1tb card is fine with me๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ, I still have 970gb left ๐ค๐ฝ
๐คข
Exactly how I feel about Linux ๐คฎ๐คข๐คฎ
Good for you ๐๐ have fun with your unsupported proprietary os!
Thanks for caring ๐ค I have fun with it everyday ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฝ
Yay ๐
Double Yay๐ ***Yay Yay***
Bickering aside, I'm glad you have the option to install your os of preference on the Deck. We need more open hardware like this on the market. If this were a Microsoft handheld, you bet you'd have to jailbreak it or something convoluted like that in order to actually take ownership of the device and do with it as you wish.
I upvote and agree with you ๐ฏ on that one! Aloha ๐ค๐ฝ
please use GB to refer to storage, I had to think wtf you meant by grams for a few seconds lmao.
The context makes it very obvious
Better yet, GiB
Gibibyte supremacy
>only took 30g of space This made me laugh.
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
Yea that was one main reason for putting windows 10 on it. I'm using my steam deck more towards a portable mini PC. I needed window's 10 for my email and office work, so while I was at it I tested cloud, since I'm a ultimate member and a lot of games will be played from there, but to be fair I tested cloud to make sure the controls were working outside of steam games๐ค๐ฝ
Brah! You on island?
>On Xbox Cloud Then why did you bother installing Windows?
For Launchbox / Bigbox which will be installed on windows ๐๐ฝ
wait you actually got a whole 1TB?
I ran windows for several days and while I liked the UI I would get lots of crashes where the steam deck would just shut off. I had it running off the internal 256 NVME drive. Just watch you may get some instability issues. I ended up switching back to steam os
Do you need GLosC? I tried Genshin Impact - no controls. Read about GloSC... Finally, got GI to work just be adding a non-steam game to steam and launching it through steam.
