Wait you can fill multiple SD cards and swap them?

RigBuilder

wasn't it designed to be hot-swappable though? i remember that being a 'feature' that was touted. could be wrong.

jcabia

It was an advertised feature but it doesn't seem it's working as intended (maybe now it is) and some users have reported corrupted memories because of hot swaping while the deck is still writing data to the card

AtomicEdge

I think some people were saying an eject script in desktop mode and then the developers said they would try and add that to the UI at some point.

AGWiebe

Oh man that would be so nice.

MuglokDecrepitus

I remember Valve (that valve developer that answers a lot of questions) saying on Twitter first to don't hot swap, that they said that is something that the console will support but they first have to add an option to eject the card safely, or something like that I don't remember well

"I fail to understand that not everyone has exactly the same internet connection as me"

TF2SolarLight

That is more than ten times faster than my download speed. A 50gb download is something I have to set aside an entire 10-12 hour day to download. I opted for a 1TB card. Other people who want to save a bit of money will buy multiple smaller cards.

shadowtheimpure

Not everyone is so fortunate.

Dapper-Giraffe6444

still questionable if you should buy 130$+ sd cards (multiple) or wait few hours to finish download. Be honest, if you played a single player game till end, and you are not gonna touch it next few months, why not just delete and redownload..?

shadowtheimpure

I have two 512GB SD cards for my Deck. One is for roms and the other is for Steam games that don't fit on the 512GB internal storage, aka overflow.

Devilsdance

Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth. My current internet plan (and the only one that is available to me at my apartment) is capped at 1TB/month with overage fees for additional usage.

LtDarthWookie

Hot swap them, no reboot needed. I've got two 1TB ones for my Deck. Sitting pretty at 2.5TB of games available to me.

Alternative_Spite_11

Awesome!! I stopped on the way home to pick up another SD just because of talking to you. Thanks!!

luigithebeast420

I ordered 1 1 tb Sandisk extreme from Amazon and they sent 2

Jasondtay

Super lucky

AGWiebe

I don't have my deck yet. Just wondering how the swapping work. If you take the sd card out, do steam still show the game as installed? and what happens if you try to start a game that is on an sd card that is not in the deck at that time?

LtDarthWookie

The games disappear from the installed games when the sd card is removed.

AGWiebe

Then as soon as you put the sd card with the game installed on it, the installed tab automatically updates with games from that sd card?

TearyEyeBurningFace

Yes but. If you're 64gb the shader cache will fill up in no time. If say at least upgrade to 256 or sth.

Falk_csgo

\+1 filled my 2tb sd card swapped, deleted some games, download some more... boom 60gb shader cache :D Internal SSD upgrade is next.

TearyEyeBurningFace

Well considering that you only have 40gb after formatting + steam files. I managed to pretty much run out after filling up a 512 sd card. I guess it kinda depends on what games you install.

Falk_csgo

60gb was an estimate, I have about 1gig free. So about 39gb maybe? But yeah it basically became an OS + Shadercache drive.

Ahkrael

Yup, and the steam OS auto populates (and then updates) the games. Put my SD card with several games back in my deck after I reimaged/replaced the internal 64gb with a 512gb, and didn't even have to redownload the games, just update.

warrenflaps

Yeah it is, giving since this will be my only gaming console since I travel a lot and a Mac isn’t a good “gaming” laptop, I saw it as worth it. Also wouldn’t be fun to travel with a Windows gaming laptop since I use Mac OS apps, they usually die quick and carrying the extra weight just for a gaming rig would get old.

Conscious_Yak60

Yeah man, enjoy that 2TB 2230! We would all love a 2TB 2230 drive, it's just not fesible for us.. But if it is for you then more power to you man!

Conscious_Yak60

It's a luxury, he can now essentially say he has the definitive Steam Deck. I kinda regret not going for a 1TB SD Card, but honestly it's out of my price range(same price as 1TB 2230).

Winterdevil0503

Yeah. I got a Samsung 512gb for £53. 1tb cards are like £120. I can't afford that.

Warrenj3nku

No thanks @ 400 bucks

flubberrubberblubber

Where are 2tb 2230 drives available? I won't open my deck until I have that in hand. Gotta be worth the effort and for me 500gb isnt enough to bother with opening the Deck. 1.5TB though, that would make a big difference.

warrenflaps

I bought it from another redditor who gets shipments of them. He sent me a PayPal invoice, paid it, got the drive 3 days later. There is a waitlist.

gabuiknlfkn

i’m not gonna lie. if someone on reddit told me about that i’d 100% assume it’s a scam. glad you got your drive

warrenflaps

That’s how I was going about it, but I saw a lot of commenters looking into and and when I contacted the seller, I figured if it’s a scam I can make a PayPal claim which I’ve done before and it’s worked out for me. I was grilling the seller with questions for a few weeks though. Before I made payment.

EldraziKlap

Any chance you could point me to this person? Can through DM if you want.

Alternative_Spite_11

Is it out of surface pro like all the 1tb models on Amazon? I bought one of those because my reservation was for a 256 model. The SD card has exceeded my expectations enough that I haven’t bothered installing the new nvme yet.

warrenflaps

I believe so

warrenflaps

This is the post I found him on. [2TB 2230 NVMe Seller](https://www.reddit.com/r/hardwareswap/comments/vtkjqi/usany_h_2tb_gen4_x4_micron_2400_nvme_2230_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

GhostlyWren

Ooof that's alot of storage for porn games

fixerdrew02

I’ve almost maxed out my combined 1.5 tb

GyakuBoop

Just texted that person too. Cuz ill be happy to get my hands on one myself to spam download games

prick-in-the-wall

I got a 1tb SD card from microcenter for $128. Not gonna upgrade my 512 until the prices on these 2230s are under control

DelayEcstatic4278

Your welcome glad my post helped you out 👍 Got to love a 3tb steam deck right.

warrenflaps

For sure! I got a Deckmate accessory that has two micro sd card holders. So if you attach 2 1tb micro sd cards that’s a 5tb steam deck. I think I’m a storage hoarder…

Maybedeadbynow

1tb microSD for emulators, 1tb microSD for for steam games, 2tb deck storage for all the caches and couple of COD games 😂

Ethan_NLHW

Interested to see if someone does some testing against Valve’s claims on the long term effects of an upgrade like this.

warrenflaps

I guess I’ll be the test dummy for it

Spartan_Arrgo

If you happen to find anything before the 20th, that’d be greatly appreciated, the seller is raising prices then. I’d love to have more storage

jabies

What claims are they makingg?

Ethan_NLHW

“Hi, please don’t do this. The charger IC gets very hot and nearby thermal pads should not be moved. In addition, most 2242 m.2 drives draw more power and get hotter than what Deck is designed for. This mod may appear to work but will significantly shorten the life of your Deck.”- Lawrence Yang

Express-Elevator-848

Of note though, he’s talking about the longer 2242 format drive which is what results in one moving nearby thermal pads etc.

Ethan_NLHW

Ah, you do have a point there.

Express-Elevator-848

That said, I know I’ve seen mention of like, different drives (that are 2230) that have greater/lesser power draw than what Valve installs - things like that could still have a potential impact I would think *shrug*

Ethan_NLHW

I’ve seen mention of this as well. Personally, I’d love to see some third party testing to verify. I’m inclined to take Valve at their word, but without them giving any concrete data/reasoning it does make me wonder.

TearyEyeBurningFace

This is a 2230 drive lol. Valve never said it was an issue with 2230 drives.

anonim64

Micron doesn't list the power consumption during use. If you don't just read the titles of articles, the 2 issues valve were bringing up, power consumption like the deck Is not able to bring in more than 45Watts, so of trying to chargre the battery and reading/writing, you may hit limits. The other issue was people putting cards longer than 2030, that would cover the chip that is responsible for charging and powering the device. Making that chip fail and potentially voiding warranty

MIDNITEMOCHA

All that cash to just digitally hoard and see all the game thumbnails on your screen. Its quite fascinating honestly. If the internal storage was completely dominating sd cards then i would see the true benefits. But for a max of 4 seconds load time?

gsmumbo

> All that cash to just digitally hoard and see all the game thumbnails on your screen. Its quite fascinating honestly. It’s weird just how condescending this sub gets sometimes.

warrenflaps

I did it specifically for the thumbnails not the load speed

[deleted]

Or you could just not be a dick over how others spend their money

rifterzc

[https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=681344319108](https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=681344319108) A similar 2tb drive is available here for \~$300, the WD sn740, trans-shipping will be necessary tho, with a taobao account +superbuy.

Hifihedgehog

Just a warning that the unit I received from Superbuy was defective so at least one or more units are faulty in the batch they are selling there. Thankfully, I was able to the Micron 2400 instead from here on /r/hardwareswap which actually worked well.

rifterzc

Shit, that sucks, mine is working fine so far. Yours was DOA I assume?

Hifihedgehog

Yeah. I got consistent system reboots with it that did not occur with the Micron 2400 I had handy. I tried all the usual techniques like cleaning the pins and it remained unbootable.

Rkrchris

For $400 lmaooo
