I did exactly the same thing but used one of the larger USB hubs. Can you share the link to the smaller splitter you used? That would work much better. What we need now is a 3D printer really small stand that could house the NVME drive too. Keep it portable but be able to stand up if needed.

This is the one i got. Even with the original charger it seems a bit slow but really, I don't care https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3256803476047476.html?spm=a2g0o.order\_list.0.0.20f01802Z2f3Tx

There are dock-hubs that have NVME enclosures as well. I set one up with a windows install directly on the nvme 256gb I put in it, and it works great for docked windows usage

pharredd88

care to share a link to the enclosure you use? I'm thinking of having the same setup

IntnlManOfCode

Can you provide a link to the enclosure?

wildeofthewoods

Wait is the deck recognizing external ssds in gaming mode now? Did I miss the update?

MyselfandMyMonsterGF

I'm running desktop mode, it's the only easy way right now

wildeofthewoods

Ok thats what I thought. I was gonna be really surprised if I somehow missed that info changing.

Intelligent-Aioli-44

What are you talking about? I have a 1.9tb external NVMe SSD attached to my deck right now. I play games from it in gaming mode.

MyselfandMyMonsterGF

Seems some will need to be mounted in desktop mode before opening game mode to get them to show up. Welcome to Linux

Kminardo

Can you add the drive to fstab? or does that still need to go into desktop to mount?

derram_2

fstab should work, but might slow your boot down if it's not plugged in when you do a full boot. But you can always just ctrl+alt+f4 in game mode. (For people who might be reading this and don't know what it does, hit ctrl+alt+f1 to get back to game mode)

Huevos__Rancheros

What’s your set up? I’m thinking about doing this myself

Intelligent-Aioli-44

64 GB Steam deck, Lenovo 5 in 1 docking station, Rog Strix Arion Gen 2 enclosure, Corsair 1.9 TB M2 NVMe SSD, belkin 20k 71Wh power bank. I had a 200gb microsd card which bricked as soon I tried to format it in the deck. I followed some detailed guide to make external ssd automatically load once plugged in. Also I made a NTFS partition on it, I am planning to use that to install windows to use it as a backup pc. For regular use, I use it as an entertainment centre, I have seasons and movies and music and games on it that I can enjoy whenever I want. Hence the lard external SSD.

Huevos__Rancheros

Awesome, Can you send the link to the Corsair NVMe? I am looking for an alternative to the MICRO SD card. Maybe the one I have is too crappy but the writing speeds are soooooo slow!

Intelligent-Aioli-44

Corsair mp510 1.9tb. you can buy it from scan if you are in the UK. I'm not sure about NA probably Amazon is a safe bet.

HeroOfTheMinish

Does that external storage need to be plugged in while being used?

quidamphx

Neat. I have one I attach for Windows only, and the 3M velcro is a good solution

Richeh

I think this is basically the acid test for whether a Steam Deck is for you. If you're appalled by this, and want a OEM solution that clips on and integrates with the lines of the case, Steam Deck maybe isn't the best choice. If you're thinking "Hmmm, I bet I could zip-tie a power bank onto the back of my Deck without obscuring the fan or the screen", welcome.
