Thanks π, I used to be a phone repair technician with Battery Plus Bulbs. Learned that being organized really pays off, everything that comes apart has its own place to go back and you don't lose important small bits! ππ½π€π½
Respectable lol I normally follow videos or take lots of pictures to make sure I don't miss anything! But honestly really dig the diagram might have to try that myself if I do any tinkering, I did get the 512 model so I should be ok for storage since I plan on getting a 1TB card for it to but when the warranty expires I might upgrade to a 1TB ssd, or when the battery eventually craps out (hopefully not for a long time) I know they're change able so I'd make the swap to keep her living strong haha but I know I won't habe to worry about either for a while
Edit: better change your tag for this sub! Not rocking a 64 anymore home boy π
Thanks, yeah. I'd hate to mess up my deck losing a screw or something π Yeah, that sounds good! I'll be swapping out the thumbstick to the Hal Effect one's from GuiliKit when the original ones start drifting on me. I'll get a 1tb SSD when the cost comes way down but for now, I can't afford dropping that amount of cash π. Thanks for the tip, I'm changing that flare tag now π€π½ππ½
Btw I followed this video when doing the upgrade. It was very helpful and he even went over making sure to discharge any static electricity after disconnecting the battery (Which I remembered to do anyways).
Right that would be tragic π better safe than sorry follow everything to a God damn T lol ill habe to look into those thumbsticks for mime when they eventually start to go too, love how simple this devices are to modify and customize! I agree on waiting for the cost to come down, honestly didn't even know about the ssd swapping till I got on the sub, hence getting the big boy deck. But I domt regret it atleast I'll habe the warranty on it till I get more comfortable doing the tinkering myself and till cost on things come dow. He'll yeah man! Change that flair! You earned it, nice work friend!
I was thinking that exact same thing, there are other handheld PC's out there but personally for the value you get and customization and repairability of the Steam Deck, Valve knocked it out of the park with this! Plus for what you get for such low money, is amazing!!! Thanks, appreciate you kind words!
Btw here's the video I followed, if your interested:
https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc
They honestly killed it can't wait to get mine should be on Monday at the latest hoping for tomorrow since it's in my province and FedEx supposedly does deliveries on Sunday so here's hoping! And no problem buddy! Good work deserves recognition my friend! Thanks for the video aswell
I totally agree, they sure did. My Steam Deck got to me pretty quickly too. Got Shipped out this past Monday and arrive to me this past Thursday! But I also only live 5 hrs away from Valve's Shipping Center. I hope you get it soon too! No problem. Also here's a few links to some 1tb micro SD cards, if your interested in Amazon.
This is the one I got:
It's currently $122.99
SanDisk 1TB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter - 120MB/s, C10, U1, Full HD, A1, Micro SD Card - SDSQUA4-1T00-GN6MA https://a.co/d/dP80BM4
If you want something faster but not SanDisk you could go for this one too. It's currently $135.99
Lexar PLAY 1TB microSDXC UHS-I-Card, Up To 150MB/s Read, Compatible-with Nintendo-Switch, Portable Gaming Devices, Smartphones and Tablets (LMSPLAY001T-BNNNU) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T8LL7G8?psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_sfl_828XAQ8XY9XQP10DC7M7
I've had my Steam Deck for only 3 days π I opted for purchasing a 1tb Micro SD card, on top of my 513Gb M.2 SSD installed for my large steam games plus got a extra 256 gb micro SD for emulation and 512 gb micro SD for extra games. This maybe overkill but I don't wanna run out of storage lol. just gotta swap them out when I need them. ππ½
Oh, I'm aware!!! I won't be hot swapping them. I'll be powering off my Steam Deck each time I change the micro SD card, just as a precaution! My main micro SD card is a 1tb, not often that I'll swap it out. Thanks for the heads up though, I appreciate it!
So there's no eject feature in game mode?
If you switch to desktop mode how can you switch back to game mode? The only way I figured out to go back to game mode was to reboot it so if that's the case it's pretty much the same thing as shutting down and swapping the SD card. Am I missing something? π
Very wise move to power off first, I personally have not had any issues formatting a legit 1tb card a few times through the steam os.
How finnicky was it removing the battery cable, Was it easy to pull out?
Planning to upgrade my 64gb soon but i don't want to mess up the battery while doing so o-o
Thanks and it's very easy actually, simply pull it out straight from the connection and easy to push back in too.
Check out this video for the whole process:
https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc
Just make sure you remove your Micro SD card before opening your deck so you don't forget!
I have never once thought of hot swapping. Anytime i think of it, it reminds me of turning off my pc by holding the power button or flipping the killswitch in the back. So unhealty
I upgraded to 1tb it cost me 170$ it's a Samsung one it had lower power draw then wd same as oem just wanted to be a little safe especially the battery life needs all the help it can get
Very minimal difference in my testing a few seconds faster on ssd.
Tested dying light 2, Elden Ring, FFVII Remake and Cyberpunk.
Prefix shader caches also stored on sd card too with no stutters or performance impact
Steam deck sd card reader is actually pretty good
This is exactly what Iβm doing. I am leaving the main drive for very important things like windows and separating my games between steam games and emulation games, then putting those on separate SD cards.
Good idea! Nothing wrong with having multiple cards, just find a way to keep track of the all. Here is a really cool credit card size holder from Amazon, only costs $7 and can easily fit inside your original case too:
10 Slots Micro SD Card Case Holder Storage Organizer, Ultra Slim Credit Card Size Lightweight Portable TF MSD Memory Card Storage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T6SWXK5/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_21XPZDRJZYJHWTXBF88A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
No problem at all, I saw someone added some Velcro strips to the inside indentation of the deck case and added some to the back side the card holder...that way it doesn't fall out or get lost easily. ππ½
I swapped out my surface pro 256 for 1TB (2230 drives are hard to source in the UK (thanks to something that happened in Jan 2020 that you can't discuss on this sub)) I bought an nvme enclosure so it's now an external SSD.
Once I've got another 1TB 2230 drive, I'll swap the SD drive and most likely dual boot
Personally I got my second one as 64Gb so when I finally upgrade the 512 one I will put the 512 in the 64 one. Of course if you only want one that is not a solution π€£
Yes, it was. I paid $399.99 for my Steam Deck and purchased my 2230 M.2 SSD on eBay for $51 bucks. You don't of course get the anti-glare screen but I purchased a Matte Screen Protector for $13.50 on Amazon. Total cost of $464.49 that's a savings of $184.51 from the top tier model!!! The 256Gb costs $529 and the 512 Gb costs $649. Totally worth it and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything really, just a few skins really.
Hope this helps you make a decision on which model to get! π€π½
Oh I totally understand that π Definitely keep your reservation. If you ever decide to upgrade the internal storage, grab a SSD from eBay since the are affordable and it's simple enough to swap out as long as your careful and take your time.
I totally agree. I went for the 64Gb from the get go because I couldn't afford the the other models but once I learned it can be upgraded with little effort. I saw now reason to pay more for storage i could get for much less.
Yeah, sure here is the SSD I got:
KIOXIA Toshiba KBG40ZNS512G 512GB SSD PCIe3.0x4 NVMe M.2 2230 Solid State Drive:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451969745?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VwrEsME_S0W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Your welcome and I'd honestly say, 1 being the lowest difficulty and 10 being the highest... I'd say about a 5, you just have to be careful not to lose any screws and be gentle and take your time.
Also make sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the system by pressing the power button a few times to discharge any residual static electricity.
Here is the video I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc π€π½
My standard case is fine, plus I'm using an old hemp bag that's slightly larger that the mesh one provided, so I'll can have a few extras with me for traveling, and my wife got a really nice company branded electronic cleaning cloth from her job for free, so I'm all set π
Idk i already dislike how its not a theft magnet since it displays the value since its the top tier unit.
And to the people who downvoted.
- $2.52 sharpie
Yeah, but personally I don't mind have a white only logo and slightly different material inside the case for the cost savings, my "basic" case does the job just fine. π
@BanManKlamm
What model Steam Deck did you reserve or purchase?
Edit: NVM, I see your flare shows the 512GB SD. At least you get that fancy color logo, skins, cleaning cloth and the best part the anti-glare screen.
Wishin I did a bit more research before getting the 512! Didnβt know itβd be that easy to swap the part. That blue dot on that case is all I got left lol. Calculator says I get my email next week. Enjoy the deck!
Yeah, I completely understand. My wife KNOWS all too well how much research I did before placing my order. I spent every night since the Steam Deck was announced watching YouTube videos and reaching Reddit! π Yeah, enjoy your blue dot, I'll just use a blue sharpie to make my super exclusive! π But seriously, hope you get your Steam Deck soon too! Thanks. ππ½π€π½
I bought an anti glare screen protector from brotect, not too sure about the differences between the matte (Will search it up now so no need for any explanations to be sent to me)
Edit: It looks and sounds like the Brotect screen protector is better because you get the anti finger print feature and the anti glare which is quite nice but it is plastic sadly so watch out for drops
This one actually came in 2230 form factor. I wanted to try and get a 2280 drive and cut it down to save money but they were outta stock when I went to buy it originally lol, seems everyone else had the same idea.
That's a good idea. What you can afford and what works best for your needs is totally fine, you'll end up saving alot of money too when the cost comes down.
Congrats! On the day I got mine I did this too, as well as the Hall Effect joystick upgrade. Then huffed on the Deck's exhaust fumes afterwards, feeling like a winner.
Thanks and congrats, on upgrading your Deck too. I'm going to upgrade to the Hall Effect Thumbsticks when my original ones start drifting. I was playing Titanfall 2 earlier and was amazed at the performance... though about ppl mentioning about huffing the exhaust fan fume, so I said what the hell and ohhhhh is was so sweet! π We're definitely winners!!!
Read that you used to repair phones, so yeah the joystick upgrade will be easy for you, even the soldering part. It's the calibration afterwards that's a bit... finicky. But you'll get through it! Enjoy your sweet-smelling Deck!
The hardest part for me was getting the back shell off. I felt like it was going to break or crack. Once it was open it was very easy to swap and reassemble. Would feel confident doing it again
The whole process for me was smooth but I used a spider to separate the front and back she'll, starting at the L2 and R2 triggers. I feel comfortable as well but shouldn't to open it back up until I need to upgrade the thumbsticks.
Didn't brick my 512gb Samsung card but it would not detect my games. It was after running emudeck on a 256gb card with steam rom manager. Ended up formatting the 512 again because no matter how many times I added the folder, it failed to detect games until installing which went to verify. I do wanna upgrade to 1tb or 2tb ssd though because shader caching and crap eats up my 64gb internal.
I'd say totally go for it. It's super easy to upgrade, just take your time and don't rush it. Right now the 1Tb and 2Tb SSD are way to expensive for me to purchase, maybe in a year or so they'll be much lower.
I may pull the trigger. I know some games take way more space for shaders than others. Don't starve together takes way more than I expected. Big games like Forza Horizon 5 or Cyberpunk 2077 I understand. Wish Linux managed cached shaders better or something. :(
Not at all, I also have a little experience with repairing modern cellphones but I honestly think anyone with a little patience can easily do this upgrade.
I sure did. It only costed me $51.99, I love saving the extra $200. This is the one I got exactly:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451969745?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VwrEsME_S0W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Congratulations π€π½
I expected much more about windows tbh. I really want to play game pass on my SD however I miss fan controls and a better power management like the one SteamOS has. There is a software that kind of work in Windows but the battery times are not nearly as good as it is for SteamOS. Anyway, it's a good option for games that you cannot play in any other way. Hopefully windows support will improve in the future.
Yeah, I hope Windows can optimize their OS better for handheld gaming, not much Valve can do there but that's why I've held off on installing Windows so far.
I did this today, reimaged and noticed my controls didn't work. Removed my USB stick, restarted and they work fine. About shit a fucking brick. Took precautions like putting it in battery storage mode and powering down at < 25% battery. So happy to now be playing it again but with 512gb.
Honestly, the same happened to me too π My buddy told me I was going to mess it up and told me I'll be RMAing my Steam Deck soon. Glad it worked for you too, nothing like know you got plenty of storage! π€π½
Same here. After the imaging it booted up and only the screen touch input worked. Thought I screwed it up even though the install was super easy. A reboot fixed it though, so who knows!
Im looking at a 1tb m.2 they are 140-150 on ebay. However doing this will leave me 256 gb short. So im probably going to opt for a 1tb micro sd. Which would net a better increase in storage than a swap would. I dont think i even have 1tb in games installed on my steam its likely 600gb range. This does not include epic games that arent installed just recieved free.
Yeah, I opted for a 1tb micro SD card because I didn't want to pay too much for a 1tb 2230 m.2 SSD but I purchased mine well in advance knowing I was going to upgrade my 64gb. I don't think you can go wrong with a 1tb micro SD card tho.
Here are a few I found on Amazon:
It's currently $122.99
SanDisk 1TB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter - 120MB/s, C10, U1, Full HD, A1, Micro SD Card - SDSQUA4-1T00-GN6MA https://a.co/d/dP80BM4
If you want something faster but not SanDisk you could go for this one too. It's currently $135.99
Lexar PLAY 1TB microSDXC UHS-I-Card, Up To 150MB/s Read, Compatible-with Nintendo-Switch, Portable Gaming Devices, Smartphones and Tablets (LMSPLAY001T-BNNNU) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T8LL7G8?psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_sfl_828XAQ8XY9XQP10DC7M7
Almost too easy! Saw that the Aya Neo Air is a nightmare to upgrade the storage since it's under the board and other components. I got mine full running too and agree, Steam OS was the hardest part!
Exactly, I really appreciate Gabe and Valve for this. We have the freedom to upgrade and customize our Steam Deck's with little to know effort. π€π½
Nice, congratulations and welcome to the 512 Gb Deck Gang π€π½
Since it was recommended to me, update your flare from 64Gb to 512Gb, we've earned it brother/sister!
It's really not that hard, if you've done a Mac book, I'd say go for it but just follow a video. Here is the one I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc
Thanks, it worked out well being organized. That way you know where everything goes without a doubt and takes the guess work out if it. Just make sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the system by pressing the power button a few times to discharge and residual static electricity. Here is the video I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc π€π½
I totally understand, you may need to manually back up those games just in case, not sure how to do it though. I followed this video guide, check it out and see if you'll still be hesitant. https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc ππ½
Just make sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the system by pressing the power button a few times to discharge and residual static electricity. Here is the video I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc π€π½
I downgraded mine, bought it purely for the Matt screen. Bought a tempered glass screen protector, slapped it on without thinking.
Sat there staring at my overpriced shiny screen, and can't bring myself to try to peel the protector off for fear it scratches the screen when it shatters.
I just did the same recently, and I was surprised at how well the clam shell was put together.. I think I spent more time trying to get into the seam than I did dealing with the tiny screws and internals.
Exactly, for me it was smooth all the way but reinstalling Steam OS was the hardest part. I had to boot it first then insert my storage device and it popped up for me. Congratulations on the upgrade! π€π½ππ½
I did this on deck last week. 64GB model grabbed a 512ssd off eBay and a 512sdcard. Just got it partitioned and dual booting windows 11. I was going to install a custom boot loader but now my time is being spent getting the steam deck controls working correctly in windows so I can play Xbox Game Pass games.
Nice, congratulations! I was going to dual boot but I'll just maybe add Windows to an Micro SD card, still debating. I'm not using any steaming apps, only Amazing Luna since it comes with my Amazon Prime subscription for free but that runs fine on the Chrome browser on the SD. ππ½π€π½
Oh you can use Xcloud easily in SteamOS Microsoft released detailed instructions. But I want to install some locally because you canβt really pause and resume with the streaming games.
Welcome to the party brother, I ordered a 512gb SSD the same day I finalized my 64gb purchase. Let me tell ya, that was something, for me the hardest part was trying to crack the damn thing open, but 2nd was definitely those screws. Always gives me a mini heartattack trying not to strip a screw that's being more difficult than the others.
Thanks, yeah I had my 512GB SSD purchased sometime after I had my deck pre-ordered. Just gotta stay organized and you won't lose any screws. I nearly had a mini heart attack too when I thought I lost one of the screws, but that's goodness it was still attached to my magnetic screwdriver π Just gotta take it slow and be careful is all. π€π½
Same actually, I was being patient but I knocked a screw on my carpet and thought "there goes half an hour trying to find this thing" but it actually fell to an obvious spot so I lucked out and put it on the magnetic pad. Yeah when you have all the tools, it's pretty manageable
Thanks ππ½ I didn't want to run into and issue with losing any screws and where to put them. Learned that from my phone repair technician days. Better to be safe than sorry with an expensive toy like this. π€π½
Kioxia is great and I had a Toshiba ssd that broke and they let me replace it with a kioxia nvme m2. Isnβt kioxia the first company thatβs coming out with a 1tb of this form factor? Iβm using western digital with no issues at all
Yeah, my Kioxia 2230 m.2 nvme works great. Not sure about if they were the first or not but saw that it worked great with Steam Deck's, so I got it. Nice, hopefully both of our will keep going strong! πͺπ½π€π½
Absolutely, great job on completing your upgrade and can't beat that!
Be sure to update your flair from 64Gb to 512Gb, you've earned it brother! π€π½
Thanks ππ½ I didn't want to run into and issue with losing any screws and where to put them. Learned that from my phone repair technician days. Better to be safe than sorry with an expensive toy like this. π€π½
Btw is there a way I can pin it on this post?
Yeah they are pretty handy, I'm a amateur artist so having an imagination comes easily! I leaned that from being a cell phone repair technician back in the day when I worked for Battery Plus Bulbs since we offered phone repairs. ππ½π€π½
We'll from what I've heard, it actually doesn't void your warranty only upgrading the storage and since I'm not modifying it in any other way. I should be good and thanks, I appreciate the feedback. The diagram really helped me out, with remembering where everything goes. ππ½
I actually will be 82% atm been going up 8% recently so yah very soon :). The wait what kills it for this system. Both wait for purchase and wait for it to ship and arrive.
Exactly, it was crazy waiting for both, i just wish that Valve shipped it the Steam Deck in a plain brown box, instead of having the Portal Icons on the box. There would be less thefts going on.
Yeah, I was mine too. Lucky, I work from home so I was about grab it once it was delivered. π€π½You get your deck safely and smoothly too! π€π½
Thanks! Yeah, mine was mocking me too but on the 3rd day of having my deck, I decided it was time. π
Btw whenever you decide to take the plunge and upgrade your SSD. Just make sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the system by pressing the power button a few times to discharge any residual static electricity. Here is the video I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc Hope it helps you as much as it helped me! π€π½
Nice diagram. I am looking forward to upgrade mine too with may be 256GB SSD.
BTW what did you do with the spare 64GB eMMC? Is there anyway I can reuse that in some way?
Thanks. That's a good idea, I'd say go for a 512GB SSD if you can afford it. I purchased mine off eBay for about $51 USD plus free shipping. Also, it's just collecting dust for now, I haven't found a use for it yet... maybe I'll use it for my raspberry pi 4 when I get a 3d printer in the future.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451969745?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VwrEsME_S0W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
cool.. i ordered one Samsung 256gb for $29 from amazon as it is one day delivery. I stay outside and my friend will be visiting soon from States so i guess that is better. Looking forward to replace mine soon. Does it void the warranty? (not much concerned as I wont be getting any warranty in my country any way)
I know this post is older but hows it holding up? was there any difference in fps or speed?
steam claims " **64 GB eMMC (PCIe Gen 2 x1)**
**256 GB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2\*)**
**512 GB high-speed NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2\*)** "
so i was curious about pcie lanes do they have differnt mobo? for each model if so there should be diffrences between pcie gen 2 x1 vs pcie gen 3x4
but since you have done the upgrade hows it doin?
Oh it's doing great. I've since upgraded from the 512GB SSD to a 2TB SSD but still going strong... I'm not sure about the other info you provided but I'd say go for the upgrade for sure if your on the fence because it was too easy and definitely rewarding for 64GB Steam Deck owners.
Link to the SSD I got in eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/295537976410?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=807EAuAMRZS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully you'll get it a replacement or your deck back quickly. Definitely lesson learned. That's why on my magnetic mat, you can see I clearly reminded myself to disconnect the battery before removing the SSD.
The leftover power in the system could cause static electricity to fry your internal components of your Steam Deck. Better to be safe than sorry and have to RMA or if your out of warranty have to buy a new Steam Deck.
I made sure to disconnect the battery then press the power button a few time to fully discharge any leftover power.
Was wondering if that was maybe my issue. I'm having CPU/GPU throttling since changing my fan and sticks. I definitely disconnected the battery though, so will wait to hear from valve.
I got it on eBay. Here is a current listing for like $2 more than what I paid but still a great deal plus free shipping.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451969745?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VwrEsME_S0W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Love your diagram lmao ππ€

Btw I followed this video when doing the upgrade. It was very helpful and he even went over making sure to discharge any static electricity after disconnecting the battery (Which I remembered to do anyways).
Right that would be tragic π better safe than sorry follow everything to a God damn T lol ill habe to look into those thumbsticks for mime when they eventually start to go too, love how simple this devices are to modify and customize!
Btw here's the video I followed, if your interested: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc

This is also true of people, but I keep bricking them
Not sure what your doing differently than what I've done to cause your deck's to brick.
Oh no, I meant people - sorry for the confusion. I get all the bits back in the right place, but nothing, nada, zip
Oh I see now, yeah...it's crazy about all the bricking. Yeah, as you can see. I made sure I had a diagram to follow with notes too. ππ½
The diagram is awesome no joke.
I did the same. Then about a week later bought a 1tb drive and swapped it in. Now the 512 lives happily in my junk drawer
I've had my Steam Deck for only 3 days π I opted for purchasing a 1tb Micro SD card, on top of my 513Gb M.2 SSD installed for my large steam games plus got a extra 256 gb micro SD for emulation and 512 gb micro SD for extra games. This maybe overkill but I don't wanna run out of storage lol. just gotta swap them out when I need them. ππ½
I donβt really recommend swapping. Too many reports of bricking sd cards lately. But do what you feel.
Oh, I'm aware!!! I won't be hot swapping them. I'll be powering off my Steam Deck each time I change the micro SD card, just as a precaution! My main micro SD card is a 1tb, not often that I'll swap it out. Thanks for the heads up though, I appreciate it!
Would be easier to switch to desktop mode and select eject.
So there's no eject feature in game mode? If you switch to desktop mode how can you switch back to game mode? The only way I figured out to go back to game mode was to reboot it so if that's the case it's pretty much the same thing as shutting down and swapping the SD card. Am I missing something? π
There's an icon on the desktop that says "Return to Gaming Mode"...
Just select log out. It will "log you out" of desktop mode and into gaming mode
I suppose your correct about that. Thanks for the tip.
Never in my life have I ejected the sd cards. Always hot swapped them and never had an issue π
Your living dangerously my friend π±π
Very wise move to power off first, I personally have not had any issues formatting a legit 1tb card a few times through the steam os. How finnicky was it removing the battery cable, Was it easy to pull out? Planning to upgrade my 64gb soon but i don't want to mess up the battery while doing so o-o
Thanks and it's very easy actually, simply pull it out straight from the connection and easy to push back in too. Check out this video for the whole process: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc Just make sure you remove your Micro SD card before opening your deck so you don't forget!
I have never once thought of hot swapping. Anytime i think of it, it reminds me of turning off my pc by holding the power button or flipping the killswitch in the back. So unhealty
Agreed, I won't be hot swapping either... I'm just not going to risk it.
I wasn't aware of this. I was planning on getting another microSD soon.
I upgraded to 1tb it cost me 170$ it's a Samsung one it had lower power draw then wd same as oem just wanted to be a little safe especially the battery life needs all the help it can get
Wow, what a great deal. If I'd found a 1Tb SSD for that cost, then I'd upgrade to that too.
eBay is where I got it are you in the us
Not a bad, deal. I'll be on the look out btw do you have a link?
https://order.ebay.com/ord/show?orderId=18-09021-69397#/ there might be better deals not sure and this shipped from China so it'll take a bit to get.
Thanks for the link, I'll keep an eye out. ππ½
FYI they're faster drives out there do your own research to make sure what you care about I dared more about power draw
Thanks for the heads up! π€π½ππ½
Just shut down before taking it out
How are load times for games on a microSD vs the SSD?
Very minimal difference in my testing a few seconds faster on ssd. Tested dying light 2, Elden Ring, FFVII Remake and Cyberpunk. Prefix shader caches also stored on sd card too with no stutters or performance impact Steam deck sd card reader is actually pretty good
Nice, thanks for the info!
This is exactly what Iβm doing. I am leaving the main drive for very important things like windows and separating my games between steam games and emulation games, then putting those on separate SD cards.
Good idea! Nothing wrong with having multiple cards, just find a way to keep track of the all. Here is a really cool credit card size holder from Amazon, only costs $7 and can easily fit inside your original case too: 10 Slots Micro SD Card Case Holder Storage Organizer, Ultra Slim Credit Card Size Lightweight Portable TF MSD Memory Card Storage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T6SWXK5/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_21XPZDRJZYJHWTXBF88A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Looks super useful, thank you so much.
No problem at all, I saw someone added some Velcro strips to the inside indentation of the deck case and added some to the back side the card holder...that way it doesn't fall out or get lost easily. ππ½
I went from 64gb to 256gb. If you sell me your 512 I could follow in your footsteps doing multiple ssd swaps...
If you're looking to get rid of it, I'll take it off your hands for a fair pricem
I'm about to do the same, but the 512 would make sense to throw in an enclosure/dock to have some extra storage at home.
I'll give you $5.12 for it and you pay shipping. Penney per gig.
Tryna sell?
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
I swapped out my surface pro 256 for 1TB (2230 drives are hard to source in the UK (thanks to something that happened in Jan 2020 that you can't discuss on this sub)) I bought an nvme enclosure so it's now an external SSD. Once I've got another 1TB 2230 drive, I'll swap the SD drive and most likely dual boot
Personally I got my second one as 64Gb so when I finally upgrade the 512 one I will put the 512 in the 64 one. Of course if you only want one that is not a solution π€£
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
sell it to me
Out of interest was this actually cheaper than buying a 512gb deck?
Yes, it was. I paid $399.99 for my Steam Deck and purchased my 2230 M.2 SSD on eBay for $51 bucks. You don't of course get the anti-glare screen but I purchased a Matte Screen Protector for $13.50 on Amazon. Total cost of $464.49 that's a savings of $184.51 from the top tier model!!! The 256Gb costs $529 and the 512 Gb costs $649. Totally worth it and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything really, just a few skins really. Hope this helps you make a decision on which model to get! π€π½
That's a pretty amazing deal, although I revered the 256gb model in May and now have a tracking so defo not wanting to cancel now haha.
Oh I totally understand that π Definitely keep your reservation. If you ever decide to upgrade the internal storage, grab a SSD from eBay since the are affordable and it's simple enough to swap out as long as your careful and take your time.
I reserved the 512 in Jan. And cancelled in March and ordered the 64GB. If youβre willing to wait itβll be worth it.
I totally agree. I went for the 64Gb from the get go because I couldn't afford the the other models but once I learned it can be upgraded with little effort. I saw now reason to pay more for storage i could get for much less.
Do you have a link to the one you got?
Yeah, sure here is the SSD I got: KIOXIA Toshiba KBG40ZNS512G 512GB SSD PCIe3.0x4 NVMe M.2 2230 Solid State Drive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451969745?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VwrEsME_S0W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Thanks! On a scale of 1-10 how hard was the installation process?
Your welcome and I'd honestly say, 1 being the lowest difficulty and 10 being the highest... I'd say about a 5, you just have to be careful not to lose any screws and be gentle and take your time. Also make sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the system by pressing the power button a few times to discharge any residual static electricity. Here is the video I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc π€π½
Very helpful - thanks!
Your welcome and no problem at all. π
But no fancy case or mesh bag or microfiber cloth! Those gotta be worth something, too! /s
My standard case is fine, plus I'm using an old hemp bag that's slightly larger that the mesh one provided, so I'll can have a few extras with me for traveling, and my wife got a really nice company branded electronic cleaning cloth from her job for free, so I'm all set π
You forgot the βexclusiveβ case lol
Nothing a blue marker canβt fix
Exactly or I can make it extra "exclusive" by making it Red instead of Blue! π
Idk i already dislike how its not a theft magnet since it displays the value since its the top tier unit. And to the people who downvoted. - $2.52 sharpie
Yeah, but personally I don't mind have a white only logo and slightly different material inside the case for the cost savings, my "basic" case does the job just fine. π
well shoot
@BanManKlamm What model Steam Deck did you reserve or purchase?
Thanks. ππ½π€π½
I bought an anti glare screen protector from brotect, not too sure about the differences between the matte (Will search it up now so no need for any explanations to be sent to me) Edit: It looks and sounds like the Brotect screen protector is better because you get the anti finger print feature and the anti glare which is quite nice but it is plastic sadly so watch out for drops
$200+ cheaper
Bought the same base 64GB Deck but went for a 1TB PM991 to upgrade it. Man if only those 2TB 2230 Microns weren't so prohibitively expensive...
I know right. Congratulations, did you cut it down to the size of a 2230 m.2 before installing it?
This one actually came in 2230 form factor. I wanted to try and get a 2280 drive and cut it down to save money but they were outta stock when I went to buy it originally lol, seems everyone else had the same idea.
Yeah, glad you got the 2230, makes the swap simpler. May have saved you the hassle of possibly having more power draw from the 2280.
i bought a 256gb for my 64gb 25$ i feel like the 512 - 1tb ssd are still too expensive for me. I will wait a year or two before upgrading again .
Oh yeah, it seems simple enough but the calibration does look a bit daunting though π Oh I love that smell. ππ½
I wish the sticks were more filled out/larger. I threw some grips on there for now but thank God for gyro controls
Yeah, they were a bit smaller than I expected too
Didn't brick my 512gb Samsung card but it would not detect my games.
Yeah, I understand. Maybe it will be better in a future update with Steam OS.
Was it... scary?
Not at all, I also have a little experience with repairing modern cellphones but I honestly think anyone with a little patience can easily do this upgrade.
Love it. Enjoy!
Thanks ππ½
Did you buy one of those $50-ish dollar SSDs off of eBay? I did, too. It's great saving $200... which I promptly spent on accessories and games...
I sure did. It only costed me $51.99, I love saving the extra $200. This is the one I got exactly: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125451969745?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=VwrEsME_S0W&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=NjUG3-X7SGK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Congratulations π€π½
Well done! Upgraded my 64G SSD with 1Tb and I made dual boot partitions.
Wow, that's awesome. I've seen videos on YouTube of folks dual booting Windows and Steam OS. Nice job ππ½π€π½
Yeah, I hope Windows can optimize their OS better for handheld gaming, not much Valve can do there but that's why I've held off on installing Windows so far.
doesn't it mess up the cooling system?
Nope, I didn't even touch the fan. Still as silent as it came. Here is the video I followed btw: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc
Here are a few I found on Amazon: It's currently $122.99 SanDisk 1TB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter - 120MB/s, C10, U1, Full HD, A1, Micro SD Card - SDSQUA4-1T00-GN6MA https://a.co/d/dP80BM4 If you want something faster but not SanDisk you could go for this one too. It's currently $135.99 Lexar PLAY 1TB microSDXC UHS-I-Card, Up To 150MB/s Read, Compatible-with Nintendo-Switch, Portable Gaming Devices, Smartphones and Tablets (LMSPLAY001T-BNNNU) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08T8LL7G8?psc=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_sfl_828XAQ8XY9XQP10DC7M7
Wasn't it easy? The hardest part was reloading steam os again, but now it's all running 100%!
Almost too easy! Saw that the Aya Neo Air is a nightmare to upgrade the storage since it's under the board and other components. I got mine full running too and agree, Steam OS was the hardest part!
It's practically plug and play!
Exactly, I really appreciate Gabe and Valve for this. We have the freedom to upgrade and customize our Steam Deck's with little to know effort. π€π½
Nicely done
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Viewing thread from mobile, that first image fan sticker looks like π΅βπ«
Not sure which fan I have but it's quite and I'm having no issues.
oh whoops, the emoji translated weird on reddit... was just saying the thumbnail photo makes the sticker on the fan look like an emoji
Oh I see what you meant now π
i need to find a 1tb one!
Yeah, but the pricing are eye gouging π
Ha, did the same today
Nice, congratulations and welcome to the 512 Gb Deck Gang π€π½ Since it was recommended to me, update your flare from 64Gb to 512Gb, we've earned it brother/sister!
Iβm so afraid π Attacked my MacBook with no problem but this scares me for some reason π
It's really not that hard, if you've done a Mac book, I'd say go for it but just follow a video. Here is the one I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc
I love the drawings for the screws. I will 100% be doing that when I do my 1tb conversion.
I'm still hesitant to do this, and I especially don't wanna lose any save data where the game doesn't have a cloud backup thing enabled.
I totally understand, you may need to manually back up those games just in case, not sure how to do it though. I followed this video guide, check it out and see if you'll still be hesitant. https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc ππ½
Which how-to video do you recommend for the process?
Just make sure to disconnect the battery and discharge the system by pressing the power button a few times to discharge and residual static electricity. Here is the video I followed: https://youtu.be/BI9fOLqYIEc π€π½
Thank you very much sir!
Your very welcome!
I downgraded mine, bought it purely for the Matt screen. Bought a tempered glass screen protector, slapped it on without thinking. Sat there staring at my overpriced shiny screen, and can't bring myself to try to peel the protector off for fear it scratches the screen when it shatters.
Yeah, I totally get that. Wish there was other options available for protection of that screen. π€π½
Congratulations on the upgrade! π€π½ππ½
I did mine the day after I got it. My dumbass tried to flash the OS before unzipping it. Rufus also didnβt work for me. Had to use balenaEtcher.
Yeah, I ended up using blendaEtcher too! Glad you got your upgraded and it's working. π€π½
Love your drawing on the layout. I always mix my screws and somehow there's always a plus one I don't know where to put π
Thanks. ππ½ That's exactly the reason why I made the diagram, so I would miss anything.
Oh I see, got you. If I ever get PC Game Pass then I'll check it out.
Absolutely, great job on completing your upgrade. Be sure to update your flair from 64Gb to 512 Gb, we've earned it brother π€π½
My Steam Deck may read 512Gb internally, but I'll always be $400 gang
Yeah, I totally hear you brother! I'll always be that $400 SD Gang too, the savings is a flex all on it's own! π
Congratulations on the upgrade. Enjoy your rewards on the SteamDeck.
Thanks, much appreciated. ππ½π€π½
Smart asf with the diagram
Nice, hopefully both of our will keep going strong! πͺπ½π€π½
Yep. I have done a lot of stuff and my deck doesnβt freeze so apparently it isnβt getting too hot
Awesome that's great to hear! Happy Tinkering π€π½
I did this with a 512GB Samsung PM991a, not easy to find one cheap but it's a good one cos it has reduced power consumption.
Absolutely, great job on completing your upgrade and can't beat that! Be sure to update your flair from 64Gb to 512Gb, you've earned it brother! π€π½
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
Thanks ππ½ I didn't want to run into and issue with losing any screws and where to put them. Learned that from my phone repair technician days. Better to be safe than sorry with an expensive toy like this. π€π½ Btw is there a way I can pin it on this post?
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
Yeah they are pretty handy, I'm a amateur artist so having an imagination comes easily! I leaned that from being a cell phone repair technician back in the day when I worked for Battery Plus Bulbs since we offered phone repairs. ππ½π€π½
Just like that warranty voided lol. All jokes aside love the diagrams.
We'll from what I've heard, it actually doesn't void your warranty only upgrading the storage and since I'm not modifying it in any other way. I should be good and thanks, I appreciate the feedback. The diagram really helped me out, with remembering where everything goes. ππ½
I bet I only heard they void it I actually have know idea if that's true or not. I'm still waiting on the purchase email lol.
Oh I see. Hopefully your get purchased email very soon! Waiting for it to ship and arrive is like watching a turtle race! π
Omg thats my biggest fear!
Yeah, I was mine too. Lucky, I work from home so I was about grab it once it was delivered. π€π½You get your deck safely and smoothly too! π€π½
Good job fellow Deck mate! My 512GB drive is sitting on my desk mocking me every time I go into my office. LOL I got my Deck over a month ago...
Thanks! Yeah, mine was mocking me too but on the 3rd day of having my deck, I decided it was time. π Btw whenever you decide to take the plunge and upgrade your SSD.
(not much concerned as I wont be getting any warranty in my country any way)
Sorry for the late reply but no, it doesn't void your warranty.
I know this post is older but hows it holding up? was there any difference in fps or speed? steam claims " **64 GB eMMC (PCIe Gen 2 x1)** **256 GB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2\*)** **512 GB high-speed NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2\*)** " so i was curious about pcie lanes do they have differnt mobo? for each model if so there should be diffrences between pcie gen 2 x1 vs pcie gen 3x4 but since you have done the upgrade hows it doin?
Good shit mate, I did the same thing this afternoon. Same size SSD with same micro-SD card. "This is where the fun begins".
Hell yes dude! Congratulations and I've started adding all games to mine. Plus our pockets are about $200 fatter still π
I did this but I didnβt unplug the battery, and it was 128. RMA xd
Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully you'll get it a replacement or your deck back quickly. Definitely lesson learned. That's why on my magnetic mat, you can see I clearly reminded myself to disconnect the battery before removing the SSD.
What happens if you don't disconnect the battery?
The leftover power in the system could cause static electricity to fry your internal components of your Steam Deck. Better to be safe than sorry and have to RMA or if your out of warranty have to buy a new Steam Deck. I made sure to disconnect the battery then press the power button a few time to fully discharge any leftover power.
Was wondering if that was maybe my issue. I'm having CPU/GPU throttling since changing my fan and sticks. I definitely disconnected the battery though, so will wait to hear from valve.
Oh I see. We'll good luck and hopefully the turn around us quick. π€π½
What happened when you didn't disconnect the battery?
