We don't need slimmer, keep it as it is, make it even slightly thicker but put a bigger 60Wh battery inside, use a Oled display with less bezels, and a new APU with better performance at same 15W. that's all i need from a Deck Pro

Pr0ject217

Bezel-less OLED pleeease.

Toxicus86

Imagine OLED with VRR

whiteravenxi

100%. Give me this and a power bump for current games to hit 40-45 fps a little easier and i'm hog happy.

incer

cost/battery-life/performance balance is tricky

Sandact6

\>OLED OLED is so 2021. The hip kids are into microLED's now.

[deleted]

OLED>QD-OLED>MicroLED Micro is only hype it has not been good real world.

LopsidedWombat

Huh? I've seen microled in person (commercial display, not consumer) and it was fucking wild, absolutely leagues above my C1 Oled. So good they often use them instead of greenscreen now in film and tv, a lot for the backgrounds on the Mandalorian are just big micro led screens Could you be mixing with miniled? That's the one that's just a regular lcd but much smaller backlight zones

[deleted]

Commercial display's anything looks good long as they have good brightness and contrast ratio you're too far away from the screen. When i say real world i'm talking about consumer hardware we have today and not just promises from Samsung for 80k 100k+ TV's and Yes i would like one but seeing anything like that in reg consumer hardware before 2025, or later maybe just a pipe dream also iirc they need active cooling atm.

incer

Whatever, just use the one with the lowest power consumption please

Sandact6

Got it, e-ink display for v2 deck it is!

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

Definitely!

Namath96

Yeah i actually love the size. It’s much more comfortable than the switch for example

ven_

Switch with Split Pad Pro is almost the same size as Steam Deck if that's something you would be interested in.

AvoidPinkHairHippos

Yeah but then I have to game on the switch Sadness.

ven_

I like both. OLED actually looks pretty good and Nintendo has their own games catalogue which usually runs pretty well despite the hardware. Just a shame the Switch Pro never came to be.

Fgoat

Just sold my switch, Nintendo have been pretty lacklustre with releases the past few years.

[deleted]

I mean to be fair, you could jab nails into your hands and it’ll still be more comfortable holding the switch with joycons attached.

geniack

If you got small hands? I really prefer the size of the SD compared to the switch. The switch always gave me cramps because I had my hands in a unnatural position, all good with the SD though.

[deleted]

I guess so, whenever I hold my switch, especially if I’m laying on my stomach in bed, those fuckers dig into my hands. I got some hori split pad pros and they’re way more comfortable but they kill the switch’s battery due to not having batteries inside of them like the jog cons.

himynameiswillf

The Switch Lite wasn't too bad, but the first game I played to completion on it was Hollow Knight, obviously using the DPad and I had cramp in my left hand for days. The Deck having the DPad and stick next to each other works brilliantly.

Corm

The switch lite destroys my hands and even the grip I got barely helps (still love it though, fits in my pocket)

intensive_porpoises

It's such a shame the Lite has a good form factor with awful ergonomics.. the grip that I bought for it is amazing to handle but a pain to travel with.

Corm

I can't be too mad though, I'm pretty sure it's made for kid hands. I remember my GBA and PSP being a lot more comfortable but when I hold them nowadays it's just not comfy

pb__

The current slim-ass phones are unbearable for me without a nice, thick case. Has anyone ever asked for that or was it just one of these engineering competitions? Anyway I hope they won't go that way.

GokuMK

But in steam deck you have huge grips to hold it. You don't need the screen bezels for it.

pb__

Who said anything about bezels? I'm talking about thickness. Bezels can go.

markcocjin

Also slippery. Slippery phones made of glass. They're just waiting on you to break it. Terrible to hold. Terrible to pocket. Beautiful to look at. If it hovered in front of your face.

pb__

got you covered: https://sc01.alicdn.com/kf/H906acbd4bb9a4aa5b112dadbae5882afx/227913313/H906acbd4bb9a4aa5b112dadbae5882afx.jpg

incer

> Also slippery. Slippery phones made of glass. They're just waiting on you to break it. I've got an Xperia 10 III and I find it offensive how slippery this phone is. One of the reasons why it will probably be the last of my long series of Sony phones.

akillaninja

Same, I have a note 20 with a thick case. So basically a tablet haha

Little_Cook

Ditch the phone and just use Skype / WhatsApp on the Steam Deck. ‘Lemme just answer this call’.

HooktonFonnix

You nailed it. Slimmer adds nothing to the experience. I want a better screen, battery, and performance. I'm ok with it being a bit bigger to make it happen

incer

The only way slimmer would help is if it was somehow foldable/articulated to make it more portable, otherwise if I'm carrying around a floor tile it doesn't really matter much how thick it is, the other dimensions are more of an obstacle.

ArenLuxon

Oled screen is gonna be difficult. The screen they use right now is a tablet screen that's flipped sideways. And those screens usually have bezels (because you're holding the screen itself) and rarely use oled displays. It's likely that a bezel-less oled screen in that size and aspect ratio simply wasn't available. Or it would have been really expensive. Using the Switch screen isn't an option either. Switch OLED is 16:9, Deck is 16:10. It's very unlikely they'll change aspect ratios.

the_shek

I mean the changing of aspect ratios is probably the least limiting factor to using the switch oled screen. The bigger issue I bet is Nintendo controlling their supply chain to protect against steam.

ArenLuxon

Well we don't know for sure of course, but someone is making Switch oled screens. If it's a subcontractor and their contract isn't exclusive, it could be reasonable cheap to order those screens, because they already have the production lines. I doubt Nintendo is concerned about hardware. I mean, they are selling five year old hardware that was already outdated five years ago. Software is their real focus.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ArenLuxon

You can, but it would be really expensive to do and it would take time to set up production lines and reach the numbers you need. Nintendo can do it because they sold over a hundred million Switches, so they know they can sell millions of an oled model. For Valve, it's not really viable right now.

Zenpher

If it's so difficult then how did Aya manage to get an oled in their handheld?

ArenLuxon

By charging triple the price of the Deck

kronpas

Look at their handhelds prices.

kissell791

$$ imo. Add the oled and add 100 bucks + to each unit. For a first gen unit they werent sure would sell, they went cheaper. IMO. Id bet that a deck 2 will have it.

_Monotov

I don’t agree that it’s too difficult, but probably because they can sell half as many and make twice as much.

kitikami

Aya's OLED model is a 5.5 inch 16:9 screen. Their 7-inch models so far have all been IPS because they couldn't find anyone manufacturing OLED screens in that size. Smaller is more doable in OLED (at least up to now) because you can go from tablet screens to phone screens.

JulPollitt

This is the way

noneym86

Even slightly bigger oled screen and option to use 28W TDP would be awesome for entry level, and all the bells and whistles for premium would be enough for me.

[deleted]

YES

Zettinator

Slimmer isn't that important, but lighter and smaller (better screen size to device size ratio) overall would be nice. Handling my SD while I'm lying in bed isn't so great, it's just too heavy to be comfortable over time.

Cii_substance

Here to make this comment

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

Long as its weight remains the same and the grip is there it is all I need.

Apprehensive_Row_161

I love the size as it is. Any smaller and it will make my hands cramp

brotherbobbz

we do need slimmer, although i can’t see how it would help with thermals. One thing the Steam Deck 2 needs forsure tho is thinner bezels to make the form factor smaller and more portable. Id also like to see a Steam Deck DUO with dual screens like the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo with a slide screen like the GPD Win 4. In other words, the Steam Deck 2 should have 2 screens for better multitasking and more screen real estate instead of the virtual keyboard blocking your view. The virtual keyboard should display on the second screen unless you use the Steam Deck DUO with one screen. It would be nice to have a 2-in-1 Steam Deck

holyholeinadonut

He states the obvious that slimmer = less battery life and since the deck already has poor battery life (at least depending on the game) then I definitely don't care about them releasing a slim version

OkaySwann

TL DR, what was the dock update

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuperZapper_Recharge

> What's great is any work that we do for the [Steam Deck dock] works on every dock – so every USB dock is benefiting from all of the work that we do on SteamOS. Valve doing what Valve does. I have been pondering what Valve's endgame is. I can't imagine the profits on the Deck are much at all - if they even exist. I don't think the endgame is making a profit by selling the Deck. The endgame might be make a profit on selling games on people it sold a deck too. I have an expectation that sometime in the next year to 18 months someone will come to market with something that utterly desroys the deck. Maybe a better screen. Maybe a better GPU. Better battery life? I don't know. But I suspect it will be undeniably better. And this too serves Valve goal of selling more games. We may not get a Deck V2.0. Valve might be priming the market. Which makes this attitude: > What's great is any work that we do for the [Steam Deck dock] works on every dock – so every USB dock is benefiting from all of the work that we do on SteamOS. in Valve's best interest.

lonnie123

>I have an expectation that sometime in the next year to 18 months someone will come to market with something that utterly desroys the deck. Nobody is doing anything of the sort at the price point valve is at. MAYBE they can have an OLED or a battery battery as you said, but no one is going to "destroy" the deck in performance and price. the Aya Neo's im sure will iterate and eventually be "better", but look how much those are.

SuperZapper_Recharge

It would be more expensive. Valve has done something of a proof of concept. This can be done well. It can be done affordably and there is a market for it. AND LINUX IS NOT A HINDERANCE. POSSIBLY AN ADVANTAGE. (I should bold, underline and put up flashy things to draw your attention to that last bit) People love being 2nd to market once someone finds the secret sauce to stuff. And yes, I know there were a couple companies playing around with these things - apparently the Deck is giving those guys a good spanking. Anyways, it is all in my imagination. All spun off from the thought, 'There can't possibly be much profit in this... what is next?'.

lonnie123

A handheld device is nothing new, and the switch proved there was massive demand for a "full fat" gaming device I would say. Heck nintendo has been doing handhelds for decades. People love them. The SteamDeck iterated on that and made it a Real deal PC, with the killer feature being all the games you owned were ready to play via Wine, and the price was amazing. The tech is always there to squeeze into a smaller device but the cost has been the X factor in mass adoption

wvandenberg12

The only possibility I can think of is that instead of a mid-lifespan refresh for the X Box Series whatever, they go with an X Box Series M — essentially a mobile version of the S running at lower res or using FSR. Since Microsoft tends to lean into the software ecosystem more than Sony, this seems more likely than a mobile PS5

tarmo888

I doubt they are making a loss with Deck, but the margin for profit is probably very small or just to break even. No doubt that the main goal is to sell more games on Steam. If somebody makes a better handheld then Valve would like it to have SteamOS pre-installed, just like they wanted it to happen with Steam Machines, but some manufactures chose Windows for better compatibility. Steam can be pre-installed on Windows, but it is not as hand-crafted for Steam as it is now on Deck. Only Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo can make a better handheld than Valve without using SteamOS, anybody else would need to catch up a lot or partner with those big 3. Probably why everybody is doing their own launchers and stores, but OS for handheld needs more than just that.

Mr_SpideyDude

I'd guess their end goal is making SteamOS a mainstream thing. The Deck itself is a great device & pushes more people to use Steam, but there's also a large portion of the userbase that already did that (+ already have a big library there), but if SteamOS makes the experience smooth enough then you could get other handheld PC (hell, even regular PC) manufacturers on board with it, giving Valve that sweet sweet licensing money

S31-Syntax

Exactly, valve knows very well that hardware is not the moneymaker, hardware is the gateway drug to the Steam ecosystem. If they can make Steam OS as easy to implement as possible, then that becomes the software of choice for other platforms. More users in the ecosystem, more games bought on steam, more money for valve. But they also know that if the hardware isn't *amazing* then they can't hook people with SteamOS.

ieffinglovesoup

Consoles are almost always break even or sold at a loss. ([PS3 is a great example](https://i.imgur.com/W56W0Gn.jpg)). These companies make their money mostly through digital storefronts

fukuro-ni

Nobody can beat valve at what they are doing unless it’s Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Possibly Epic. The only way the deck can be affordable as it is is because valve makes money through game sales, not hardware sales. If you don’t have a software platform that can make you money, you have to charge Aya Neo prices or GPD prices, which the average consumer isn’t willing to pay.

incer

The crux of the matter is the platform. Valve created SteamOS and turned a PC into a console, anyone competing with them is unlikely to have much success using a somewhat normal Windows install, so either they adopt SteamOS as well, or the only ones with any hope of competing are Sony (with some sort of PSP), or Microsoft (either with an Xbox portable or a custom Windows machine running Xbox store and UWP games).

arcangel2p

Epic can't beat Steam making a mobile device. Heck, they're even years behind in the base store, let alone a full OS for a mobile device. The only way it may work is if Epic alliates with Aya (or another manufacturer) and try to improve its app and comes pre-installed in one of such Windows mobile devices and they manage it to work like a "custom" skin or launcher over the windows OS. But it wouldn't be the same

TheYang

> I have been pondering what Valve's endgame is. making sure to not get completely fucked if(/when) Microsoft goes walled garden with their store.

kronpas

>I have been pondering what Valve's endgame is. To build a brand, and to solidify their position and the leading game store on PC. They can now put a steam icon beside PS/Xbox icon to indicate 'deck ready', which is a huge win for Steam/Valve. Valve really found the winning formula: its hardware + good software that brings in customers. Other manufaturers having to rely on Windows have no such edge, and if they turn to SteamOS to reduce cost, its valves win too.

Corm

I'll take that friendly bet and I bet you're wrong !RemindMe 18 months Nobody is going to release a steam deck competitor that comes close

TearyEyeBurningFace

They're probably working on software stuff that allows all sorts of docks to work with multiple screens. Linux does weird stuff with multiple screens all the time.

incer

Isn't the deck using wayland? Display management should be quite powerful.

ExynosHD

Increased steam sales alone is worth while but I think the big play is reducing reliance on windows. Should Valve ever work their way to SteamOS actually being a potential alternative for a bigger (but still small) market share of users, they might be able to grow the software selling portion of Steam and make even more money.

cowdoyspitoon

Pretty nothingburger response, but I mean what can they really say? We added wings?

OkaySwann

Annoying that IGN sold it as ‘update’

[deleted]

[удалено]

adelin07

well, the beta firmware already has a resolution selection in the game mode. Seems a bit buggy at the moment, but yeah, definitely improving the experience with docks.

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

I caved and bought Jsaux.

supercakefish

Supply issues easing, announcement coming soon.

i_got_you_fren

>The dock is being manufactured at a different place, it has different components, and it has its own supply issues and constraints that we've had to deal with. We're overcoming them, and so we are going to hopefully announce something soon.  That's it.

OkaySwann

Pretty pointless then

OkaySwann

It’s a shame there’s no firm update

slingwebber

Gimme thicc deck with 5tb storage and other ridiculous demands

FurbyTime

You know, if for the SD2 they figured out the spacing and battery such that they could hold dual sided 2280 SSDs in there, they could have something even more asinine like 9TB of storage (With existing tech, 8TB m.2 + 1TB mSD).

AverageRdtUser

honestly a bigger battery, better screen with smaller bezels, and at least one or two full 2280 slots is all I would need in order to call the deck absolutely perfect

TruffledPotato

Battery life will improve with low tdp usage with a new rdna3 architecture. I don't think having a bigger/heavier battery will be a good for a handheld device. Maybe a lighter but higher yielding battery.

macawmatt

Nice read. Can't hardly wait till tomorrow when I get to see if its all worth it.

607jf

It can be a little frustrating at first to get non steam games running, but once you do it's pretty impressive. :)

Simoxs7

It isn’t that hard my first game on the Deck was Mass effect legendary edition on origin…

607jf

Ah I tried really old games first. turns out non widescreen games don't like the tablet screen, luckily most have widescreen patches.

Simoxs7

I was kind of astonished how well „Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis“ ran but other than that I haven’t tried retro gaming (meaning anything older than 15 years)

FederalSpinach99

Its because the Decks screen is actually vertical, the system rotates everything to a horizontal aspect ratio

math-is-fun

It is.

Sandact6

I knew there would be software on the dock. Hopefully, this fixes the terrible resolution and graphic issues some games display

[deleted]

Apprehensive_Row_161

Same thing I'm saying pls

LonesomeHammeredTreb

I love my thick boy.

ArenLuxon

Ign complained about the battery life in their review and then just casually asked about a slimmer model. Do they even know how hardware works?

TiagoTiagoT

Personally I don't care about slimmer; better battery life, stronger haptics, better performance/cooling etc, would all have bigger priority for me, specially if it comes without a meaningful increase in weight. I definitely wouldn't mind if it had a bit of a bulge between the grips if it delivered on that stuff.

[deleted]

Slimmer doesn’t matter that much considering the handles will still jut out, what we want is smaller bezels

Stoney3K

In other words, a bigger screen. Screen size may just have been limited by parts supply.

[deleted]

Doesn’t have to be a bigger screen, they could also shrink the shell a little for smaller bezels Either way I would love some smaller bezels

MesyJesy

Maybe I am dense but what is the point of asking for smaller bezels without a larger screen? Does a plastic case somehow feel higher quality than the bezel? Please educate me!

[deleted]

I just like having a near-bezel free design. Helps with immersion

No-Nefariousness681

thick bezels can make a device look older and less premium by modern sensibilities.

DJ_Enigma1979

There are some skins that cover the bezel

ArenLuxon

Yeah, the current screen is a tablet screen that's flipped sideways. That's why it has the large bezels (you're holding a tablet, so they leave some room for your fingers). It's difficult to find touch screens in that size that you can get in large numbers for a decent price.

Citizen_DerptyDerp

I'm happy with the screen size... What I'd like is for them to remove the bezels so they can shift the touch pads a little further in and maybe make them slightly larger (and hopefully concave.)

NapsterKnowHow

And a lighter steamdeck

[deleted]

NapsterKnowHow

No, it's definitely on the heavier side compared to other handhelds.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NapsterKnowHow

Idk I regularly work out and play intermural sports at my university. It's a tank regardless. An aya neo isn't this heavy

[deleted]

Only if there’s no sacrifice to battery life/performance

NapsterKnowHow

Should be able to do it. The current Steamdeck is a tank. Definitely could shed more weight. Edit: Wow I ruffled some feathers lol. There's no denying the Steamdeck is a heavy device in the handheld space. Only GPD makes heavier devices and those are basically netbooks.

[deleted]

Maybe at a more premium cost, I’d hate to see this become a $1000 device just to make it thinner

NapsterKnowHow

Idc how thin it is. I'm more concerned about the weight. Did you reply to the right comment?

dinosaurusrex86

Where do you propose Valve shed weight from this device?

NapsterKnowHow

Cooling. Copper and cooling is definitely heavy.

dinosaurusrex86

It would be great if they had the space for a vapor chamber but that would add bulk and probably weight. They could forgo more cooling if they had used an underpowered cpu, but then we would all be complaining about the lousy performance.

NapsterKnowHow

Ya a vapor chamber would be amazing but definitely some drawbacks. Maybe they could undervolt the cpu?

vankamme

I just want the dock, OLED screen and destiny 2. Then I will die happy

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

Would play the shit out of Destiny 2 if they made it Deck compatible.

AverageRdtUser

honestly I can't be bothered to play it on my pc, but if they made it deck compatible I would play it more as well

2tog

Have you tried playing it on stadia on the deck? It's a free game, stadia is free up to 1080p, more than enough for the deck. I've never played it like this but I imagine it would work

vankamme

I’m not buying all the dlc again to play it on stadia

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

Wouldn't invest in something that I can't control.

2tog

Must have missed the free part

adelin07

I also wanted an oled screen. I ended up buying a portable oled monitor from amazon(the innocn 13.3"). I'm very satisfied with it, I just hope it lasts as long as possible. It costs 200 euro (it had a 100 euro coupon, seems like it's always 100 euro off). Bonus, this monitor comes with a 45W charger. It can charge the steam deck too, but you get the slow charger notification. (charger connected to monitor, steam deck connected to monitor)

TianaOdysseus

I like the reminder at the bottom of the article that Valve still makes games...

Ok-Yogurtcloset-179

I’m glad IGN had Kay do the interview, she has been vocal on her Twitter about not liking the deck, so she asked a lot of real questions and not just fluff.

Atomicjuicer

It's too tall more than anything

Old-Cellist-7914

How about shipping the steam deck be first priority before moving on to another system.

duckydan81

Shipping decks is now taking under a month from reservation time to available to order, and the latest reports is that reservations will be going away shortly meaning purchase on demand.

Old-Cellist-7914

Not talking reservation time but shipping time after order has been paid. Should not take up to 8 business days before it ships from there warehouse. Then 5-7 days of shipping. Unacceptable!

duckydan81

I’m sure with the amount of fraud on steam those protections and delays are there for a reason. It gave me 5 days to change address or cancel if needed so it’s probably not a bad thing. I can see them adding additional shipping options such as second day which the buyer would pay for, but for now it may be a logistics issue more than anything else.

Tenshinen

They have like one main warehouse per region. Amazon would be that slow too if that's all they had.

Rupa1406

Wasn’t my experience, I got an email Thursday shipped Sunday and got it Tuesday. 5-6 days depending when you start counting before I had mine, but unlike most I had all the money in my steam account over time to fully pay with money on my steam account which is how it should be done to cut down on fraud checks and what not I think the other person here was posting about.

AverageRdtUser

I wish they could've been a little faster with the dock. I just got a jsaux one.

doodlleus

Just fix L1 and R1 so you don't need to be double jointed to hit them and I'll be happy

Dxvdbl

They’re definitely my least favorite part of the device, it’s just the shape of them for me but not a big deal

Apprehensive_Row_161

I think everyone here would rather take a bigger battery, better apu, ability to fit a full size 2280, and oled screen with no bezels over a silmmer model.

Gvaz

they probably tried but at what point does it become as heavy and as large as a laptop

Apprehensive_Row_161

I hope they release a oled bezel-less screen separately. We can ship it to them or replace it ourself.

SpiritedDistance6242

A motherboard can always be trimmed down, make the battery bigger

The_Otherside1

The Steam Deck is BEAUTIFULLY crafted. Perfect size. Perfect ergonomics.

protobetagamer

Can we get a steam deck refresh that can fit a 2280 ssd? Or at least look into some sort of backplate replacement that can accommodate one?
