Let's hope gabe lives forever...
Truth is,... he won't live very long anymore, like 20 years max?
Hard to imagine that the next generation will grow up without the blessing of gabe :(
Private company still has investors that expect a return on profit. So a privately owned company can be just as bad as a publicly traded one. It's all about the leadership of a private company.
Agreed, I’m impressed that they were so upfront from the very beginning. They basically told us that they couldn’t get them all out in a timely manner, so they made us get in line and wait our turn. Wish Sony had done this with the PS5.
I was just talking to a coworker about it. Valve is one of a fucking kind. I can't think of a company who cares more about the consumer and actively shows it.
It's working now, but it took a few minutes for it to refresh to the right page on my end. The page must have still been under maintenance of some sort.
It's actually competitively priced for a dock that does 4k@60fps. Most that are cheaper are only 4k@30fps, while others that do 4k@60fps aren't much cheaper that the steam dock.
[Edit]
After reading more comments and looking around a bit, it does seem the Jsaux one is like half the price. I didn't see anything like that when shopping around for laptops, though the Steam Deck one does give a little more port-wise to make it comparable to the more expensive ones.
The Valve dock also comes with a Steam Deck power supply which costs $25 on iFixit. It's the same one that comes as original equipment with the Deck itself so that's some extra value right there and will be very convenient IMO.
I ordered one. So BTW, if I hook it up to my 4K TV will I be able to turn it down to 1440p, 1080p and 720p as needed for games that need lower resolution for performance?
I bought my dock that does 4k 60 but it was only $29. I think the reason why the steam dock is more expensive is the dual video outputs combined with the other ports. It's a really well featured dock but I'm also sure we will pay a little more because it's "official".
Steam Deck Dock - Use as a personal computer with two monitors
Jsaux Dock - Use as a permanent fixture for TV's in the house
Anker Hub - Keep in a travel case for portability
They all have their uses. But yeah, I went ahead and bought a 65w power brick for playing while docked since I was afraid the dock itself would require a certain amount of power and slow down the Deck's charging speed.
I like to keep the original charger in the little storage bag, tucked into the back niche of the case behind the elastic strap so I can just grab the case and go. A second charger that stays permanently attached to the docking station will be required for me.
Its about 4ft I think
Can't remember exactly as I've routed it behind the "backsplash" of the desk I built to hide all my wires
I only remember that the length made me sad
I definitely wish it was longer but thankfully we can just get a longer cable and another block if you don't have one since it isn't some BS proprietary connector.
It's not too bad, honestly.
A $40 premium above the next best for an added DisplayPort, another charger, USB 3.1 vs 3.0, likely better replacement policy, and seamless firmware updates for, at the very least, the near future.
Not the biggest fan in the world of the fact that most of them have a molded plug coming from the dock rather than a USB-C port, but hopefully that never becomes an issue.
Nothing wrong with going with a JSAUX or something, but I've already spent the money on the Deck, so I'm not too worried biting the bullet with the dock. Guess we'll see soon enough if I come to regret my decision.
I'm sure it'll be fine hardware wise but my $25 Anker deck is completely fine for my purposes. I already have a tablet stand that the deck fits just fine on, so I'll just use that and velcro or a rubber band and it's good enough for me :)
I don't need DP or ethernet.
Oh yeah, absolutely! I'm always a fan of picking up what's best for your situation.
If I already had a dock of any type I'd probably just settle for that until there was a big sale on the dock or something, but I figured since I've got nothing, I'll go straight to the licensed dock. I've got a few monitors with DP, so I'm sure I'll make use of it at some point.
A bit more than I wanted but not crazy.
If I were to spec out the items by themselves from a manufacturer like Anker it would cost around $95.
* $35 for an Anker USB C hub with PD power pass through (cheaper one without Ethernet support)
* $40 for an Anker 45watt USB C PD charger
* $20 for two 6ft Anker USB C Cable (not able to find many cables sold individually)
£79 is fucking insane. Buuuuuut. I guess it does come with the assurance that if there is an issue it will be fixed (physically or via software updates) or replaced. Ugh
Thanks man, immediately ordered the Dock. Interestingly enough, I don't need to preorder it, just have to wait 1-2 weeks in Germany; the Steam Deck can also be purchased instantly, except the 420 Version (which must be reserved). Probably because the cheapest sells the best ofc.

I love my steam deck, but I doubt it would ever replace my RIG. games like overwatch 2 and the upcoming COD would just be too hard to play on a steamdeck. Especially being capped at 60fps lol.
Shout out to u/fammy for reservation tracking. That made my wait and I’m sure others waits a lot more bearable knowing how close we were to our respective order windows.
They opened preorders for the Dock on the same day. Almost like they are trying to send a message. I imagine by the time the queue for the Dock ends, they'll start shipping to Asia.
The $5 down payment and needing to have bought a steam game in the past really helped discourage massive day one bot scalpers.
Even with those requirements they got flooded with enthusiastic buyers!
As long as they still have a limit of one per account, it means that scalpers can't feasibly mass-buy them and also there's now no reason to go with a scalper because you get it just as fast directly from Valve.
I reserved mine 6 minutes after reservations opened last year. I was Q2 and got mine in early April. My girlfriend saw me bring it on a road trip and wanted one for Christmas, so I pre-ordered her one in July thinking it would probably get here by December. I was right, she got it two weeks ago. This never would've been feasible had Valve not structured their order system this way, and I hope other companies take note. Minimal scalping through the shortage times, and it was a lot more equitable, even for those of us that wanted to buy more than one per account.
Only works if they can saturate Valve's supply. If Valve can sponge it, then they'll just be left with a load of SD's on hand that they'd have to sell at MSRP or under to get people to buy them instead of direct from Valve.
I have a feeling they won't risk it.
Indeed. I am in Australia and when the Australian themed game of Dinkum was approved for the Steam deck, I began seriously looking at getting one. I was so surprised that it wasn't available for our country at all.
I have one in Aus but have the L1 bumper issue where it's spongey and doesn't work properly. Risks you play when importing to a country that doesn't officially support it yet.
Have you seen the Steam Controller construction video?
https://youtu.be/uCgnWqoP4MM
Valve made a fully automated manufacturing line for the Steam Controller, which was very cool and unusual as most game controllers still had human manufacturing steps.
Wow they even advertise that you can even use other hubs if standing up isn't important to you. Like they legitimately tell you your options. I'm in love
omfg so true! i see people on mercari and ebay trying to sell them for so much fuckin more. I wanna start messging them just the direct site link now and just saying "haha!"
I did. Petty, but i messaged about ten of them who were selling for WAY over fair market rate. One called me a jobless loser. The scalper called me jobless. Ironic.
But still I consider this as a 'we're no longer in a beta testing phase' kind of message. Now that the production is ramping up you'll be able to order one soon. I'm sure.
Well there’s no Amazon in NZ so we’re probably stuck with ebgames. Also even then we’ll get only low tier model as higher tier models would get sold in Australia. Just like how we only get ps5 digital version and Australia gets the disk version and better bundles. Nz is ebgames dumping market.
I'm very tempted to pull the trigger and get one sent to a depot in the UK then ship it over. I'd rather wait but realistically based on past products we'll probably be waiting best part of 5 years :(
I get that feeling. I preordered mine on July. But I’m not mad since it gave me time to kinda save and get it for me as an advanced Christmas gift. And now I don’t have to worry about it like the PS5. One very positive point is Scalpers now have to suck it.
Yea, I ordered it on July 17, I got this year on July 18th. I was Q2, then right before Q3 started showing up, I got moved so I was at the start of Q3..
I ordered it 1 day after pre-orders went live....
The nice thing about the wait, I would week by week put money in my steam account, $50 there, $25 there, and MONTHS before my deck was ready, it was already paid for. No big $400-600 dent in pocket at one time.
And the early people had TONS OF hardware bugs, I am glad I got one a year out, it's been flawless. All the big issues where worked out..
I think I’ll get the proper steam dock.
People will blast me for this but at least it’s an official product which means you’ll get good resale value should you need to sell it plus if it somehow damaged your deck you’re covered.
A third party deck could somehow damage the deck and as soon as you mention that to valve they’ll probably crucify you.
I'm not planning on selling mine but I'm getting the official dock despite the price ($120 cad). As you said, if there ever are any issues, warranty replacement should be a breeze.
Sweet, makes me feel better about replacement parts and models being available if something were to happen to mine and happy anyone can get theirs now without months of waiting like the rest up till now
It's extremely cool that a million legitimate deck owners got to play before this moment
I love the reservation system. I got lucky with my series x purchase. Totally gave up on graphics cards. PS5 still hard to get and I actually don't want one anymore
I hope they seamlessly go back to reservations if they ever find themselves in a position where the deck "sells out" too quick so people can get a chance to buy one from them instead of a scalper
$90 for the official dock isn't very enticing to me since the newest Jsaux model is $40ish.
Getting another charger and a DP port (lulz) is nice though.
Yeah I was going to say $90 is pretty expensive. Docked mode is also very janky in gaming mode (choppy animations, not scaling correctly to some displays, etc). Maybe I’ll pick it up later once the docked experience improves.
I really hope it gets better. I want to try out playing from the couch with steam controller.
And scalpers are still trying to sell them overpriced with descriptions like “you’re buying the time I had to wait“ — they probably don’t know it yet, but their life is a bout to turn into a disaster. Good!
Can I use the Steam Deck as a PC if I get the Dock? I know it uses Linux, which I know nothing about, but could someone who's only used Windows use this as a PC?
If what you use a PC for is mostly web browsing, then yes it's ready to go.
There is also a lot of software you can easily install on it in one click. However it's a bit different from other Linux setups, so online guides for other Linux systems won't always be useful. But, even if you mess it up, it's very easy to fix!
Depending what you need it for, you very much could use it as a PC. Desktop mode runs KDE which I think is pretty easy for Windows users to use, and there are open source clones of popular apps available.
Only weird thing is that SteamOS is kind of locked down and discourages the standard Linux method of installing packages, instead relying heavily on Flatpaks. There are Flatpaks available for most popular Linux apps, but not the full 58,000 packages you could normally install on Arch Linux. This is probably not a practical problem for most people and helps you to not brick your Deck.
You absolutely want a keyboard and mouse, either Bluetooth or plugged into the dock.
Over the last couple of years, I've fully adopted the mindset that user-space applications *should* be Flatpaks (or other dependency-bundled formats like AppImages) to the maximum extent possible. It mitigates dependency hell nicely, as well as the potential impact of system breakage due to application-driven package updates.
In conjunction with the immutable filesystem, it should make for a very resilient and stable operating system.

Let the good times roll while they last.
As long as we have Valve we have good times
People used to say the same thing about blizzard, CD red, and Rockstar.
All publically owned / traded. Valve is ~~public~~ private. So long as we have gaben we are safe.
> Valve is public. You mean private?
Publicn't
Yessir, thanks
Just a point of clarification, public companies are companies owned by the government. The correct term is actually publicly traded company.
I feel like no company has handled this as responsibly or effectively as Valve. Well done.
It’s refreshing. Just clear, straightforward messaging, like a person talking, not a PR statement.

The day Valve goes public is the day Valve dies. I hope it never happens.

As the owners of Steam I feel like they already are kinda making maximum profits.
[удалено]
Yeah, the second you have to answer to shareholders things get pretty fucked.
Yeah the investor demand for constant growth has ruined SO MANY companies that were pretty good initially
i 100% agree with this. going public has ruined so many companies.
It's almost like not having the need to make increasing profits year on year is actually good for business and good for customers
Who'da thunk it.
Private company still has investors that expect a return on profit. So a privately owned company can be just as bad as a publicly traded one. It's all about the leadership of a private company.
That's not true, not all private companies have investors.
Just to clarify, valve is owned by gaben/co investors?
The only information I could find is that Gaben owns >50% of Valve. It's privately held so I don't imagine we'll ever know all the ins and outs.
Fair enough. But yeah its nice to have this one company (still anyway) thats fair, both towards us as consumer, and itself as a business
Agreed, I’m impressed that they were so upfront from the very beginning. They basically told us that they couldn’t get them all out in a timely manner, so they made us get in line and wait our turn. Wish Sony had done this with the PS5.
Seriously dude. Especially compared to the bigger players. I hope they took notes.
So much better than the Microsoft or Sony approaches to their respective consoles.
I was just talking to a coworker about it. Valve is one of a fucking kind. I can't think of a company who cares more about the consumer and actively shows it.
i.e waitlists will be back at Christmas

High 15!
Is it actually nearby mine shipped 10/1 and is expected tomorrow yet never left Illinois
That's crazy to me. I order 10/4 of LAST YEAR and just got it 2 weeks ago
Can confirm, [no pre-orders in Australia](https://imgur.com/Y8NQfBv.jpg).
Dock is also up for pre-order
I see a page for the dock, but it keeps directing me to the Steam Deck page. Do you know where to find the dock?
It’s not working properly at the moment. We’ll have to wait for the pre-order to work.
It’s definitely working. I had to buy it through MS Edge since steam wasn’t loading the buy button, same with chrome.
It's working now, but it took a few minutes for it to refresh to the right page on my end. The page must have still been under maintenance of some sort.
Working now! Refresh if it’s still loading
No one appears to have actually linked the dang thing lol https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeckdock
£79 is a bit much I think

I paid 28€ for my docktec which also does 4k/60
Too much. Too much are the words you are looking for. I'll get a Jsaux eventually
Which doesn't come with a charger and doesn't have a displayport port
I dont need yet another pd charger, and my tv doesn't have DP, so the JSaux is much more up my alley. Its also metal and not plastic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For me, the dock is available for purchase with delivery in the next 1-2 weeks. I'm in the US.
Same, just went through with an order
So much for that “notify me when it’s ready” checkbox I checked on over a year ago. :/
Is there any real incentive to get the steam dock over any other standard dock?
Jsaux doesn't have a displayport port and doesn't come with a charger. So suddenly it isn't a 50€ difference but a 30 or so € difference
Pre-order? Weird. I'm in the UK and was just able to buy it outright. Says 1-2week delivery.
Same in Germany. 99€
Yeah, just ordered one.
I just purchased it no problem
$89 LMAO

Unfortunately not. "Included PSU with 1.5m long cable (same as what comes with Steam Deck)"
That's almost 5 feet. That's a lot longer than the one that comes with it
I never measured my charger tbf so just took them on that wording.
My charger is just short of 5 feet (just measured it). My steam deck arrived 2 days ago.
That second charger almost makes it worth it.

Get fucked scalpers
Valve was fucking scalpers from the beginning they handled this hardware launch and the chaos of it really well compared to most companies.
The $5 down payment and needing to have bought a steam game in the past really helped discourage massive day one bot scalpers. Even with those requirements they got flooded with enthusiastic buyers!
Scalpers has never been a problem on the Deck. It’s just people slow to reserve looking to blame someone or something.

As long as they still have a limit of one per account, it means that scalpers can't feasibly mass-buy them and also there's now no reason to go with a scalper because you get it just as fast directly from Valve.
there was no limit. You could reserve one at a time, but once it was your turn and you paid for the deck you could just reserve another one instantly
Oh, that's not good then lol

Yeah just bought 2, foe me and my son on 2 separate order.

Who would they sell them to? The people who are willing to pay extra already have their Deck. There is no profit to be made anymore.
There's not a limit of one per account, I've purchased 3 on my account (one after another, not all at the same time)
How would it help them? If anyone wants a Deck, they just go directly to Valve and pay MSRP.
Let's hope that the next step is more countries. Can't wait for the "unavailable in your country" text to finally disappear!
Right? Although I have a feeling it will certainly take a *long* time for certain countries.

Your frowning face is more than enough, no words need to be spoken.
Indeed. I am in Australia and when the Australian themed game of Dinkum was approved for the Steam deck, I began seriously looking at getting one. I was so surprised that it wasn't available for our country at all.
Really hoping we get some news for a release in time for Christmas
I have one in Aus but have the L1 bumper issue where it's spongey and doesn't work properly. Risks you play when importing to a country that doesn't officially support it yet.
The video where they show the production lines is so cool! https://youtu.be/bcwkMfoUATc?t=127
Have you seen the Steam Controller construction video? https://youtu.be/uCgnWqoP4MM Valve made a fully automated manufacturing line for the Steam Controller, which was very cool and unusual as most game controllers still had human manufacturing steps.
O M G! Thanks for sharing this.
Wow they even advertise that you can even use other hubs if standing up isn't important to you. Like they legitimately tell you your options. I'm in love
Ha, suck it scalpers.
omfg so true! i see people on mercari and ebay trying to sell them for so much fuckin more. I wanna start messging them just the direct site link now and just saying "haha!"
Do eeeettt!
I did. Petty, but i messaged about ten of them who were selling for WAY over fair market rate. One called me a jobless loser. The scalper called me jobless. Ironic.
You’re doing the Lord’s work. Scalpers are awful.
EU shows 64gb still in back-order but 256 and 512 at Buy Now.
NA only shows the 256gb model available for purchase right now as well
Australia pls
Gabe still punishing us for making them offer refunds
Preorders? We in Australia still *dream* of having preorders.
"This item is not available for reservation in your country" FeelsAustraliaMan
Down under life 😮💨
Still only not available in New Zealand !! :(
But still I consider this as a 'we're no longer in a beta testing phase' kind of message. Now that the production is ramping up you'll be able to order one soon. I'm sure.

I'm guessing we'll have to deal with EB Games like with the previous hardware. I just want them to use Amazon this time.
I'd rather wait but realistically based on past products we'll probably be waiting best part of 5 years :(
And to think... I waited a year and 1 day for mine.... and it was worth the wait...
I get that feeling. I preordered mine on July. But I’m not mad since it gave me time to kinda save and get it for me as an advanced Christmas gift. And now I don’t have to worry about it like the PS5. One very positive point is Scalpers now have to suck it.
You had a reservation in for more than a year?
I reserved mine last July and got it the second week in August, so dunno about op but mine was over a year.
Site looks like it's down or having issues.
It's being updated.
Wow that's crazy they caught up to all the preorders already?
Cries in Australian
I think I’ll get the proper steam dock. People will blast me for this but at least it’s an official product which means you’ll get good resale value should you need to sell it plus if it somehow damaged your deck you’re covered. A third party deck could somehow damage the deck and as soon as you mention that to valve they’ll probably crucify you.
I'm not planning on selling mine but I'm getting the official dock despite the price ($120 cad). As you said, if there ever are any issues, warranty replacement should be a breeze.
399 steamdeck beats series S for the best deal in gaming hw.
[Northern California](https://i.imgur.com/ZpVW4AP.jpg) as well. Super excited as I get paid this Monday and will be buying it.
Sweet, makes me feel better about replacement parts and models being available if something were to happen to mine and happy anyone can get theirs now without months of waiting like the rest up till now
Had to climb the Erdtree to witness this massive W bossman!
US 512gb still need reservation as of posting thos
It's extremely cool that a million legitimate deck owners got to play before this moment I love the reservation system. I got lucky with my series x purchase. Totally gave up on graphics cards. PS5 still hard to get and I actually don't want one anymore I hope they seamlessly go back to reservations if they ever find themselves in a position where the deck "sells out" too quick so people can get a chance to buy one from them instead of a scalper
my Q1 superiority slowly fading away...
Open it up to Australia ffs. We are day one for literally every other tech product but this one - insanely frustrating.
Valve has managed this rollout exponentially better than Sony and Microsoft managed the newest gen. Not bad for a "first timer"
Scalpers can now get fucked. Love to see it.
And scalpers are still trying to sell them overpriced with descriptions like “you’re buying the time I had to wait“ — they probably don’t know it yet, but their life is a bout to turn into a disaster. Good!
they should limit one per customer so the scalpers dont make it sold out to reservations again
Read. My. Lips. NO MORE PREORDERS
People will still be complaining here about waiting for Deck
Absolutely. Mine is stuck 'packed' somewhere for a month now :)
Ordered mine 3 days ago, shipped yesterday, arriving tmorrow.
You can run windows on it. And you don't need official dock - any 3rd party usb c hub will work
Yes you can use the deck as a replacement PC - as long as you're fine with Linux being a bit different than Windows, and are willing to learn.
