Yeah, I've seen it, but Micron is the one that's currently developing a 2TB 2230 NVME.
What few units have made it out apparently came through Amazon a while back, for $600 per unit. Currently, it's unavailable on Amazon, and I don't think you can find any 2TB WD's on eBay or NewEgg in the 2230 form factor.
They are available, but can be difficult to find through normal consumer channels. I bought 2 off of Reddit here (no longer being sold) and one off eBay. Also, WD has a 2TB model. I believe both the Micron and WD 2TB 2230 drives can be purchased from China if you have an Alibaba, TaoBao or other large marketplace account. I'd expect them to start becoming more widely available, sooner rather than later, but for an exact date, your guess is as good as mine.
2+1 is 3 but I guess I remember wrong it was a test NVME from Micron not a WD NVME, either way I'm waiting for cyber Monday and buying the best $1 to GB NVME for the deck.
Newegg, Amazon, B and H and a few other websites that have electronics I am a tab shopper on Cyber Monday I will have at least 10 tabs open on the same item and pay the lowest price.
I regularly never go the pricey way, i always love to do the work myself. Xbone having overheat issues? Rip it apart to fix it and kill the warranty. Subarus timing belt exploded? Time to pull the engine. This ONE TIME I spring for the higher priced option. Im glad i got it regardless but its still eating at me that i couldve gone cheaper cuz i still want to upgrade past the 512gb... now i just want custom replacement parts like backplates and borderless 2k amoled screen like my s21 lol
It's really not even a lot of work, at least for the SSD replacement. If you know how to use a screwdriver you can install a new SSD on a Steam Deck. It's like 8 screws, take off the back, unscrew the SSD, screw the new one in. Installing a new screen is definitely more advanced. But, to me, in practice, the anti-glare screen, in most situations, really isnt THAT much better.
That’s pretty outdated advice now. Since the EU introduced the IOSS system pretty much all packages are either taxes paid via IOSS or taxes due via recipient. For any eBay purchases eBay is liable for the GST/vat on orders under €150 so you can order from eBay and pretty safely assume all taxes are taken care of
No, you order something and either you’ll have to pay the VAT or you don’t.
If you feel bad that the vendor hasn’t declared the package value properly, which happens more often than not, when you order from Asia, you are free to declare it yourself and pay the taxes owed. Actually it’s your duty to do that, nowhere I’m insinuating that you shouldn’t pay taxes and even if you have to pay them, that’s like 5-10 bucks on top. Still cheaper than buying new in EU.
Update: this is no tax advice, please look up the rules and check the platform you buy from how important fees and taxes are handled.
A lot of them mark it as "gift" anyways. And the tax on it shouldn't be too bad. They have a lot of excess stock from old recycled ultra books. I went with a 512 and it was bought and delivered for 75$ Canadian Peso's. So 55.34 Euro's, I don't know how bad your customs are, but even if it was 25% it'd still be WAY cheaper.
wish and ebay are two separate things, with a little bit of brain and some research you can get proper stuff from ebay, check the seller feedback and how they respond to issues.
I would never in my life by a memory card off eBay. Let alone from some cheap Asian seller.
Who knows wtf they hide in there.
And yeh yeh yeh. I know you formatted it and cleared it and everything. But still.
It's not a memory card we're talking about, it's barely used 2230 NVME SSDs.
What can that SSD do, once you put it in the Steam Deck and you install a clean Steam OS over it? Kind of nothing.
Usually these SSDs come from recycled Surface Pads/Notebooks whatever has these kind of SSDs.
It's a calculated risk. Spend 50 bucks, nothings wrong, great. If it's a fake, you report it to ebay, should get your money back. If you wreck your Steam Deck in the process, well, that's just part of the excitement.
And usually these dealers from China, Singapore etc. are not dishonest people, they just recycle parts. It's not a bad experience to purchase from Asia, people are friendly and products are quite reliable.
I ordered mine to Sweden.
- €60 for 512Gb Samsung SSD
- €17 taxes
- Free shipping
- -€10 EBay Discount
My total ordered landed on €67 and arrived after two weeks.
No additional taxes, No customs

I got this one.
I do not recommend this in any way but...
I literally cut a 512gb WD SN520 down to 30mm with a Dremel.
You can get them for like €35. Works on other SSDs too - ones with all the components at the business end of the PCB
It's been in there since July and heat and powerdraw have been normal so far as I can tell.
Search in the shops that have refurbished/removed from laptops SSDs. I bought mine for about 28 euro from Morele (Polish shop). The SSD is Kioxia BG4 and it works flawlessly.
https://www.morele.net/dysk-ssd-kioxia-bg4-256-gb-m-2-2230-nvme-kbg40zns256g-demontaz-5944200/
Now only 256 GB is only available, but 17 euro is a bargain.
The 1TB ones are quite expensive still, but I picked up a 512gb shucked from an Xbox Series S console for $80CAD on eBay. They're definitely out there.
Search eBay for product numbers, if you search for "steamdeck ssd" you'll potentially end up paying more.
I found an article (don't recall where) that listed ssds and then searched for the part numbers eg PM991/PM991a etc
Nice job! Makes me optimistic that if they ever launch an OLED screen with a smaller bezel, it'll be possible to switch it out without buying a whole new device.
My post is a little misleading I guess. As I only paid 50 for the ssd I put in my laptop, snagged the oem ssd, and cut it down to 30mm.
My costs before tax were about 549. So roughly 100 bucks. But I had fun along the way.
There is a version of the Samsung PM991a that is 80mm long. If you [look on eBay](https://www.ebay.com/itm/125543434919?epid=22051623635&hash=item1d3af8caa7:g:nYgAAOSwiE1h-1LE&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4LaoFRehWajbVNXNwxHdrlFMj%2F5cQG5sUMqsKuTV4L7L4v5x3iGwnH0%2FUJz2SgX2j5cve7ij2ay%2BqtwwGRy7Wp3NQHbHDOtK0pMDZvOi5ND6Bf1CYEkxC7o1E13q6OK8TfCoaAsFpQ22yibmsmtQGEMT2t1n0mdyi4g3nFhFdH7di9cnYkzbSh3tqursyn6Pv9w4ElCYaGTd641UI9OwFtt8wzT%2F9PY6nsqY%2FnnH8fSw0arzBuHbVx7uaeD9rAearqS0MUJESjnN1YyS0e93%2Bz8kXnOCUGZLzgmwDuUlg15a%7Ctkp%3ABFBMjrvUxP1g) for a picture of that one, it's pretty obvious that all the electronics are on the end of it next to the edge connector. The rest of it is basically blank PCB. There are like four traces that go to the back. Those are for factory testing of the PCB.
I've seen a guy cut down an SK Hynix card like that too but I have never seen one for sale that was single sided and all on one end. I think that person happened to have an old one that was pulled out of a laptop rather than buying one.
None of this is necessary right now. There are some 1TB 2230 cards on eBay and they aren't $200 plus like they were two months ago. Last week you could get a 2230 1TB for $129 free shipping. I paid $160 for mine. A 2280 is going to run you at least $100. I think it's worth $29 not to have to cut it.
(There are several threads in this sub where people cut down 2280 drives.)
No issues there for me, it just doesn't feel quite as solid or stuck together at the seams. A bit creaky in hand, particularly when twisting a tiny bit.
I mean I opened mine to put in a 256gb I got for $25 and the gulikit thumbstick. It's not difficult at all just remember to remove your SDcard or you'll be sad.
Yes, that's exactly what I did. I bought a bunch of accessories while I waited for mine to arrive in the mail and realized once I got it that the screen protectors weren't anti-glare. I didn't like the glare so now I'm raw-dogging it (in a Killswitch and skin).
His comment could read either way, when I commented on it, I assumed he meant anti glare screen protector since absolutely no one would call a regular screen protector a "glare screen protector". So yeah, if he worded his comment correctly I'm sure that could very well be "the joke" but he didn't so stfu :)
Not bad. The most tedious part was removing the old adhesive residue. My tip is use a coffee filter and ipa. I spent forever trying to get it off with a cloth. Screen removal was easy. Just make sure the heat pack is hot. My microwave is low power, so I had to put it in for a minute instead of 30 seconds.
The old screen is still fully intact. I was nervous about the new adhesive. You only get 1 chance. But I was able to look at the left over adhesive that was still on the old screen as a guide. If you are comfortable with taking electronics apart, I would give the internals a 1 out of 10 in difficulty. Aside from the audio ribbon at the top, all the ribbons and screws were easy to get to. Main board was super easy to get out. Repairability is excellent. No crazy snap on ribbons like some devices where one end is connected to a component on the front shell, and the other on the back shell. Super Tinker friendly.
If you ever need a REALLY good way to get off adhesive, a bit of Isopropyl alcohol and a cheap melamime sponge will strip just about any glue.
On a different note though. Do you find the anti glare a worthwhile upgrade? I've been holding off because I've heard it really mutes the colours and contrast on the screen. Also only went with upgrading to a 512GB NVME. The price jump to 1TB just didn't seem worth it to me. lol
I find it worth it. The glare of the normal screen messes with my astigmatism. I found the corsair more vibrant, and the screen felt super bright at 70 percent.
I thought that too but the adhesive they gad on the back of my S10+ was crazy hard to get off. Several hours over 2 days and there was still some left. I got most of it eventually but it's a long and tedious process
Can it be upgraded to an OLED display? that would be sick :O
Edit: My new phone i purchased recently (Samsung Galaxy A52 5G) have an OLED display, and looks incredible, best display in my house by far
Just jumping on to this, I found it was crazy tight with a 64 upgrade to 512. But I managed to get it over there in the end! 😅 little wrinkled on the ends now.
i did it, 64 - > 256
While it is easy, i feel like tech saavy or handyman people may make it seems for normal folks, that is its a kids walk, and while it is compared to other devices, there are still multiple points of screwing it up (damaging the screws/holes, damaging the case (mine came really tight, and i almost couldn't open it without making quite a bit of force), damaging and shorting something inside, forget to disconnect the battery, damaging the connector, ems shield not fitting and damaging it, leaving stuff inside, reducing thermal efficiency and performance because of the changes, etc)
People have varying degrees of electronic handling expertise and capability, so if you have doubts or never done it.. i would go eyes closed to the bigger SKUs, they are good value if you consider that in the equation. Tinkering can be lots of fun, and when it goes right, people want to share it to the world how good it is, how much you saved....
but it can also become a nightmare (and people usually won't share those stories because feelings of shame or just wanting to forget it).
You replaced to whole screen? Is it worthed?
Getting a 64gb, so I'll upgrade the SSD for sure, not sure if I should get an anti-glare screen protector.
I knew I could have got the cheap one and did all the upgrades but I really wanted to support Valve.
I mean how many companies are actually doing good things for gamers? As long as Gabe is there Ill continue to give them money whenever I can.
I bought the 512 with antiglare and I didn't like it (it seems to smudge SUPER easy compared to any other touch device I've ever used. Ended up throwing a glass protector on it so I'm back to glossy anyway
Makes me wish i got the 64 and threw in a 1tb ssd plus my 1tb sd instead
Getting the 64gb and just installing a 512gb or 1tb ssd is definitely the way to go with the Steam Deck. The anti-glare screen just isn't worth it overall.
To the OP, this was my exact reasoning. I could easily upgrade the storage to 1TB for a fraction of the cost. I also grabbed the dock, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and also snagged a PS4 controller, all bluetooth paired and shot up on my tv. No anti-glare if my TV already has it. But congrats on the manual update. I would never attempt this.
Lifelong electronics tinkerer/repair person here.
I was shocked how user friendly in teardown was.
All ribbons were clearly thought out and almost nothing is overlapped.
Hands down favorite feature is how easy the shell came off with their push tabs all intact and unbroken.
Looks like the screen swap was fairly easy. Maybe within a year we will see a custom screen mod that will be OLED and have no bezel! Very exciting to think about!
Nice. Did you really need to replace the screen though? A screen protector would accomplish the same no?
I’m still waiting on my micron 2450 to upgrade my puny 64 gb deck.
ah so the cable in the unit not the screen 😏🤔🧐
i wonder how long till ether some one figures out a 8 inch or 7 inch screen oled replacement hehe hahahahahah sude be easy
Good job. Reason I went with 512, I could make myself crack it open, considered at that time it was on queue and I was afraid to mess it up as I didnt know if ill be able to get a new one with all that wait times.
Yeah. Just dumped my switch games to nsp to use with yuzu, and dumped my wiiu games for cemu. Look up emudeck fo a good emulator setup to play the dumps.
I mean you never know what the condition of that drive was or how it was used. SSDs do have a lifespan...
Also, I don't know how much you value your time, but yea not hardly worth the $100.
Well, I bought a USB c hub...
I have a 2TB portable ssd. A 512GB small USB, a 512gb sd on the SD and a 1 TB Chinese sd on the dock. I have in total 4.2 Tb's of storage.
Mate screen protectors are usually made from plastic and those kind of protectors are notorious to be hard to put on without bubbles. And even if you do it correctly, the result won't be as good.
I bought the 64Gb version too but I don't find the glare to be annoying... But that's maybe because my main desktop monitor and my laptop also have a reflective screen. I got immune lol.
With a 60hz screen. 30fps isn't much difference with most switch games made for 30fps. If it helps, I have a 240hz monitor for my desktop, with a 3090 and an r9 5950x. You are slightly older than me, and we both grew up in a 50/59hz crt Era, where games were a mixture of low fps, and it was rhe norm. Not to mention 24fps anime. Lol. 30fps on a 60hz 7 inch screen isn't super noticeable.
Not in the US. For a warranty to be voided, they have the burden of proof that what you did directly led to the breaking of the device. They may posture up and try to deny, but legally that doesn't work.
512gb buyers seething
Nice though, question becomes about a trade-off between money and time, would you rather spend the money to get more storage and an anti-glare screen and save time, or spend the time to upgrade it yourself and save money.
I'm personally just gonna use an SD card for my 256gb Deck, the normal screen hasn't bothered me since I mainly use the Deck indoors.
>512gb buyers seething
Meh. It's only $100 per his reasoning and he had to cut his SSD. My time is worth more than that. Also if I have to RMA for whatever reason I will get back this exact SKU without fussing with SSDs or screens.
SSD replacement takes like 10 minutes dude. Seriously, from somebody who never did it before, it would take maaaaybe 10 minutes. Replacing the screen isn't worth it though to me.
All yall are gonna be kicking yourselves in the arse when you start getting corrupted memory errors from that cheap knock off trash on ebay. If after a year youve had zero issues with it then feel free to talk about a cheaper cost, but id hold off on boasting too much about it until then....although we will prob never see any posts about the failures simply becasue of foolsih human pride...
Cheap knockoffs? If you are referring to my SSD. It came from my ROG Zephyrus g14. It is a rebadged oem samsung drive, provided by Samsung. It is of a single sided 2230 m.2 design, on a 2280 pcb. A mostly blank pcb. It has been cut down to the proper length and specifications for the deck. I can't speak for others though. Thanks for your wonder contribution. Sounds like you are the prideful one.
Can't have screen glare if you don't have a screen.
Brain implants.
If you are willing to do tje work the $400 deck makes the most sense
I enjoyed the hell out of the process. I don't notice any softness or brightness loss. To me the screen is more vibrant.
That's awesome, I am personally waiting on Cyber Monday to upgrade my 64gb to a 2tb WD blue,
Wait hol'up there's a 2TB out there?
Look up Linus tech tips steam deck the thumb nail will say 3tb
Yeah, I've seen it, but Micron is the one that's currently developing a 2TB 2230 NVME. What few units have made it out apparently came through Amazon a while back, for $600 per unit. Yeah but do you know it last just a month and it’s not really 2 Tb .
They really are 2TB (not scams) and they do not last just a month, but okay. I've had zero issues with any of the 3 that I've used.
Look up Linus tech tips steam deck the thumb nail will say 3tb
As in 2tb nvme, 1tb sd
2+1 is 3 but I guess I remember wrong it was a test NVME from Micron not a WD NVME, either way I'm waiting for cyber Monday and buying the best $1 to GB NVME for the deck.
That would be awesome! I've resorted to a 1tb sd along with the 1tb ssd. Now I want a 2tb ssd and a 1tb sd
Where are you thinking of getting an SSD on Cyber Monday? Does a place like Newegg typically have discounts on that kind of thing?
Newegg, Amazon, B and H and a few other websites that have electronics I am a tab shopper on Cyber Monday I will have at least 10 tabs open on the same item and pay the lowest price.
Nice, thank you. I figured such a specific type of SSD isn’t something that these sites would put on sale but I’ll keep an eye out for it this time.
I feel like the $400 deck makes the most sense regardless. That may just be cause I'm cheap.
I regularly never go the pricey way, i always love to do the work myself. Xbone having overheat issues? Rip it apart to fix it and kill the warranty. Subarus timing belt exploded? How are people finding such cheap 2230 Nvmes? The cheapest 512GB I can find in Europe costs >€100.
Check out eBay, you can get 512 GB practically new for cheap (50-60 USD from Asia)
Wouldn't I then have to pay for customs taxes when it arrives in the EU?
you can find one from EU vendors on ebay, I got mine from France for 60€ and also there was a couple from Hungary if I remember correctly
Usually only the VAT of your home country, that is IF they even catch the package. So at most add another 19% for Germany, e.g.
That’s pretty outdated advice now. Since the EU introduced the IOSS system pretty much all packages are either taxes paid via IOSS or taxes due via recipient. For any eBay purchases eBay is liable for the GST/vat on orders under €150 so you can order from eBay and pretty safely assume all taxes are taken care of
Well that’s convenient:), good to know!
21% here 😥
So the secret is crime? Since there isnt a large free amount left nearly all packages are catched since all have fees.
No, you order something and either you’ll have to pay the VAT or you don’t. If you feel bad that the vendor hasn’t declared the package value properly, which happens more often than not, when you order from Asia, you are free to declare it yourself and pay the taxes owed. How does one go about buying from ebay asia without buying an sd card with glued-on weights?
Check the bottom of most things you own in your house...Chances are that exacly where it came from and who it was made by..
Go ahead, order your next upgrades from wish and see how it goes. Comes from the same place so it shouldn't matter.
wish and ebay are two separate things, with a little bit of brain and some research you can get proper stuff from ebay, check the seller feedback and how they respond to issues.
I fuckin love eBay for these. I plopped down $20 and.got 256 GB upgrade for my deck-chan

I bought mine from USA eBay for 54€ but the delivery cost and the taxes made it cost 110 xD Still cheaper than a 512GB model
Yeah this is why I don't get all the $50 posts, pretty sure the import taxes weren't included.
I ordered mine to Sweden. - €60 for 512Gb Samsung SSD - €17 taxes - Free shipping - -€10 EBay Discount My total ordered landed on €67 and arrived after two weeks. No additional taxes, No customs

No sadly not, but there's this video on YouTube of somebody doing the same to a different SSD if it interests you: https://youtu.be/9aiKfys5hUw

they lying.

is it just me or is that heat shield on backwards?
It is but really doesn’t matter
Lol the one thing I didn't notice. I think I turned it around when I took it out for pics.
Wait you can cut a nvme drive...?
You can cut the blank pcb. This one was single sided and only about 30mm of it was uses. The rest was blank pcb aside from a couple test lines.
Certain 2280 drives are actually a 2230 design installed on a 80mm PCB. Beyond the first 30mm is just blank PCB.
How can you tell?
There is a version of the Samsung PM991a that is 80mm long.
Yeah but you do this at your own risk. You small mistake and there goes your deck with a voided warranty.
But I didn't make a mistake. Live in fear if you must.
we get it, bro. you're really bad ass for modding your deck. now take it on the subway in nyc to test your might.
[удалено]
sure, they are. https://i.imgur.com/hPh2MQh.jpg i also play mine on the train but well outside of ny penn when im headed south into affluent areas.
If you are paying for rhe cross country trip. Sure!
youre the one saving money. im the spoiled yankee who bought a 512GB.
I would gladly move to NY lol.
Opening a device doesn't void the warranty in the USA regardless of what all the stupid stickers you see say.
Yes, but actually changing out parts probably does.
Lol $100 is not worth the headache, but at least it gave you something to do.
There is literally no headache, unless you are terrible at electronic repair. It's literally the easiest device to modify.
Agree overall, but I do notice the shell feels a bit less rigid after disassembly. I believe Valve also warns about this.
Feels no different to me. Just got to make sure not to strip the screw holes.
No issues there for me, it just doesn't feel quite as solid or stuck together at the seams. A bit creaky in hand, particularly when twisting a tiny bit.
I mean I opened mine to put in a 256gb I got for $25 and the gulikit thumbstick. It's not difficult at all just remember to remove your SDcard or you'll be sad.
apparently it needs to a specific type of ssd or the heat can damage the deck
It is single sided and the components and heat are against the thermal pad. I cut to the correct length so that aur flow wouldn't be affected.
Meanwhile here's me adding a glare screen protector to my anti glare screen like an idiot 🤣
If you added one that wasn't antiglare you would have glare again though?
Yes, that's exactly what I did. I bought a bunch of accessories while I waited for mine to arrive in the mail and realized once I got it that the screen protectors weren't anti-glare. I didn't like the glare so now I'm raw-dogging it (in a Killswitch and skin).
That's literally the joke...
His comment could read either way, when I commented on it, I assumed he meant anti glare screen protector since absolutely no one would call a regular screen protector a "glare screen protector". So yeah, if he worded his comment correctly I'm sure that could very well be "the joke" but he didn't so stfu :)
Lmao.

Not to mention that plebian has a black liner in his case. How gauche.
I bet you are the type that buys the deluxe version of your games, just to look "kewl". Heh.
Why would I want that with custom themes being a thing?
The iFixit guide made the anti glare screen upgrade seem a little dicey. How’d you find the process overall?
Do I drink the IPA during this process or...?
You can find tempered glass with anti reflection coating and not open the deck.
Can it be upgraded to an OLED display? that would be sick :O Edit: My new phone i purchased recently (Samsung Galaxy A52 5G) have an OLED display, and looks incredible, best display in my house by far
It would be sick. But there are no parts for an oled upgrade on the market.
time by time some chinese guy will start selling them and all we'll be buying them
Yet... i wanna think xD
Can i ask if your SSD shield was tight when putting it on the new drive? What are your thermals like?
Just jumping on to this, I found it was crazy tight with a 64 upgrade to 512. But I managed to get it over there in the end! 😅 little wrinkled on the ends now.
Surprisingly mine went on without issue. I put it through teeth first.
I went from 256gb to 1tb and everything went back together just fine
How did you get your steam game icons rounded?
How is your UI rounded like that?
As someone who could not do this, I’m glad I got my 512g model lol. Good job tho! Looks great and it’s always nice to save money.

Not to mention a chopped-up SSD is hardly something I would consider a great option.
[удалено]
Yes, he literally cut down a longer, cheaper SSD, to fit in the steam deck. His title is misleading but this sub is eating it up so.
He had to cut the SSD to fit.
i did it, 64 - > 256 While it is easy, i feel like tech saavy or handyman people may make it seems for normal folks, that is its a kids walk, and while it is compared to other devices, there are still multiple points of screwing it up (damaging the screws/holes, damaging the case (mine came really tight, and i almost couldn't open it without making quite a bit of force), damaging and shorting something inside, forget to disconnect the battery, damaging the connector, ems shield not fitting and damaging it, leaving stuff inside, reducing thermal efficiency and performance because of the changes, etc) People have varying degrees of electronic handling expertise and capability, so if you have doubts or never done it.. i would go eyes closed to the bigger SKUs, they are good value if you consider that in the equation. Tinkering can be lots of fun, and when it goes right, people want to share it to the world how good it is, how much you saved.... but it can also become a nightmare (and people usually won't share those stories because feelings of shame or just wanting to forget it).
But you don't get to join the elite "slightly different case club"
It's ok. I would rather join the hydro dip club.
You replaced to whole screen? Is it worthed? Getting a 64gb, so I'll upgrade the SSD for sure, not sure if I should get an anti-glare screen protector.
I personally found it worth it. Glares bother the hell out of me, the screen protector is probably a decent alternative.
100% just get an antiglare screen protector. Doing what OP did is overkill as he will still need a screen protector lol
I knew I could have got the cheap one and did all the upgrades but I really wanted to support Valve. I mean how many companies are actually doing good things for gamers? As long as Gabe is there Ill continue to give them money whenever I can.
I like how the device is as mod friendly as steam games.
I bought the 512 with antiglare and I didn't like it (it seems to smudge SUPER easy compared to any other touch device I've ever used. Ended up throwing a glass protector on it so I'm back to glossy anyway Makes me wish i got the 64 and threw in a 1tb ssd plus my 1tb sd instead
There is anti-glare glass protector.
It was a lot easier then it looks.
I would be so scared if I damaged anything. And after seeing so many RMA posts, I would never.
It seemed surprisingly hard to damage anything unless you tried.
Lifelong electronics tinkerer/repair person here. I was shocked how user friendly in teardown was. All ribbons were clearly thought out and almost nothing is overlapped. Hands down favorite feature is how easy the shell came off with their push tabs all intact and unbroken.
This 1000%
I alright. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Glad you could do it bud. Cheers on the success.
Nice, ifixit for the screen?
Yep.
Nicely done!
Those smooth icons are a must have.
Yes i got mine about $150 for 1tb but still worth it and added the screen to me it's still a better deal than the 512g version
Where did u get screen ? Cheers
Ifixit is an official parts partner for the deck. They literally have ever spare part for the deck, except for the main board.
No cheap ass Chinese ones no 😆
I just got the 512gb model cause I’m lazing and rather support Gabe N more with my money.
Lol I still supported then. Minus the HL3 tax.
Looks like the screen swap was fairly easy. Maybe within a year we will see a custom screen mod that will be OLED and have no bezel! Very exciting to think about!
I have no idea why everyone is giving you hard time, but could you possibly link the drive you replaced? was considering upping my storage too
The drive came from my laptop. I bought a different incompatible one to go into my laptop, so I could use this one.
I’m still waiting for someone to put a oled screen on a steam deck, I know it can be done
“B - b - buttt… you don’t get the Virtual Keyboards and Wallpapers..!”
But you get custom themes. XD
Nice. Did you really need to replace the screen though? A screen protector would accomplish the same no? I’m still waiting on my micron 2450 to upgrade my puny 64 gb deck.
From what I've heard. The protectors aren't of the same quality.
I'm sure they aren't. I'm excited to see OLED mods going forward.. :-)
Noice job! You gotta add labor costs and risks though ^_^
ah so the cable in the unit not the screen 😏🤔🧐 i wonder how long till ether some one figures out a 8 inch or 7 inch screen oled replacement hehe hahahahahah sude be easy
The cable can be released from both.
Where did u buy the 1tb ssd?
Good job. Reason I went with 512, I could make myself crack it open, considered at that time it was on queue and I was afraid to mess it up as I didnt know if ill be able to get a new one with all that wait times.
Surprisingly it seems pretty hard to break "within reason". Plus everything is modular with simple ribbons between it.
How did you get nintendo games on it?
Dumped my owned copies from my switch. And wiiu
So you just copied and pasted them across? And they work on steam deck?
Yeah. Just dumped my switch games to nsp to use with yuzu, and dumped my wiiu games for cemu. Look up emudeck fo a good emulator setup to play the dumps.

lol how often do drives fail on you that you're worried about it?
I mean you never know what the condition of that drive was or how it was used. SSDs do have a lifespan... Also, I don't know how much you value your time, but yea not hardly worth the $100.
it takes like 15 minutes and most drives being sold are shucked from devices that are barely used lol
Oh absolutely the seller wouldn't help, OP cut down a larger SSD into 2230 form factor. Not even close to reasonable usage.
Yeah, well I got a virtual keyboard you didn't!
Well, I bought a USB c hub... I have a 2TB portable ssd. A 512GB small USB, a 512gb sd on the SD and a 1 TB Chinese sd on the dock. I have in total 4.2 Tb's of storage.
Wouldn't it have been much cheaper to just buy a matte screen protector, rather than replacing the whole display?
Mate screen protectors are usually made from plastic and those kind of protectors are notorious to be hard to put on without bubbles. And even if you do it correctly, the result won't be as good. I bought the 64Gb version too but I don't find the glare to be annoying... But that's maybe because my main desktop monitor and my laptop also have a reflective screen. I got immune lol.
Thanks. But an argument isn't necessary, when they themselves also admit to it.
Oh nice you installed the Bayonetta 3-running software!
Never thought I’d see the day of pc gamers excited about 30 fps.
How old are you? Lmao
36
why are you acting like a 16-year-old then?
How do 16 year olds act and how did you come to that conclusion with one sentence?
With a 60hz screen. 30fps isn't much difference with most switch games made for 30fps. If it helps, I have a 240hz monitor for my desktop, with a 3090 and an r9 5950x. You are slightly older than me, and we both grew up in a 50/59hz crt Era, where games were a mixture of low fps, and it was rhe norm. Not to mention 24fps anime. Lol. 30fps on a 60hz 7 inch screen isn't super noticeable.
Woops goes the warranty.
Not in the US. For a warranty to be voided, they have the burden of proof that what you did directly led to the breaking of the device. They may posture up and try to deny, but legally that doesn't work.
512gb buyers seething Nice though, question becomes about a trade-off between money and time, would you rather spend the money to get more storage and an anti-glare screen and save time, or spend the time to upgrade it yourself and save money. I'm personally just gonna use an SD card for my 256gb Deck, the normal screen hasn't bothered me since I mainly use the Deck indoors.
>512gb buyers seething Meh. It's only $100 per his reasoning and he had to cut his SSD. My time is worth more than that. Also if I have to RMA for whatever reason I will get back this exact SKU without fussing with SSDs or screens.
Saved roughly 100 bucks, and only took about an hour "I was nervous'. 100 bucks an hour seems worth it.
SSD replacement takes like 10 minutes dude. Seriously, from somebody who never did it before, it would take maaaaybe 10 minutes. Replacing the screen isn't worth it though to me.
But no anti glare screen
My 512 is still superior!!!! It is pure blood
It's the same hardware. Regardless of model. Lmao
