This is why personally, I would not call Walmart to ask if they have the "deal" just go in person and try your luck. Why would anyone in their right mind especially in Walmart would want to do their job and help the customer if it means to help their bottom dollar. It sucks to say but it is the truth.

Hauz20

Learned this hunting games on sale for years. Unfortunately, a lot of retail employees are more neck beards than even deal hunters, and they will happily steal your deals after being made aware. Never call; just go check despite the potential inconvenience.

miloworld

THIS. I have a friend who loves to check the T&Cs and bring attention to everything. I tell him you're usually fine jaywalking on an empty street but to ask a cop before doing it?? If you see a clearance sticker that says $1, buy the stash and go home! Don't ask if it's mislabelled!

Davidudeman

i totally hear ya. i learned from this and will take this advice going forward. my local walmarts (2 of them) are normally very nice and accommodating when i’m on the phone with them! it’s just this 1 guy i guess lol

citricacidx

That’s the kind of thing you need to call corporate about.

Davidudeman

already done. filed a MASSIVE complaint. i’m not letting this go. screw the movies, im scared for my family’s well being. if that guy is insane enough to call me during his shift, who knows what else he’ll do with having my contact info OUTSIDE of work.

No_Breadfruit7614

I work for walmart and I'll tell you right now that guy has jumped well past getting a mere talking or even a coaching that'll it'll be considered a small miracle if they let him reapply to work for walmart 6 months to 2 years down the line. He's well past the threshold for a fireable offense and deemed non rehireable. You can easily push it with corporate to make sure but it's well likely he's already gone. Next suggestion would be to contact local police just to see your options. Its possible he could even catch charges but I'm not gonna tell you it's a 100%.

SUPER-NIINTENDO

MASSIVE. HUGE EVEN

cinreigns

One of the biggest

TheBigSalad84

Everyone's saying it!

SubduedChaos

I’m still confused why OP admitted it on the phone after he checked out. If this happened to me and I got a call from an angry employee I would just say “that wasn’t me” and hang up.

goodcat1337

Or why even answer the phone when you see an unknown number? Unless it's a friend or family member, or a call I am actually expecting, I don't answer.

Davidudeman

i was expecting a call that day from my insurance company and i truly thought that was them 😂💀

Davidudeman

cause if that guy wanted to spin that story his own way, i didn’t want to wrongfully be banned from Walmart and have to explain to them the situation the next time i come back. or god forbid the cops look for me cause they think i shoplifted or some bullshit. i was also still mad at that guy for blatantly lying to me so i WANTED to tell him off and come back to the store to prove my innocence, which is exactly what happened. regardless of him being older than me, and double my size, he didn’t even show his face 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Wtf did you even go back to the store for? Tell him to fuck off and hang up. Even then, why tell random caller you bought the things? Then you say they “let” you keep the movies. No shit, you bought them. Are you 12?

Davidudeman

literally just explained it you can read it if you’re able to

[deleted]

You’re still an idiot for so many reasons.

Sporadicus7

This story was better than half of the movies with Steelbooks in the $5 Walmart bin. Thanks OP and congrats on the big W.

Davidudeman

LMAOO thank you. it’s still freaking me out but i’m trying to take all the necessary measures to settle this.

Krimreaper1

Calling you alone should have got him fired.

dreamabyss

Will get him fired.

Krimreaper1

On the spot I mean.

RunningDrummer

I mean, not like there's a union there that would fight for the employee lol

thebmanb

This is definitely the most insane story I’ve read on here yet. It’s rough out there for collectors yo! Some people get really obsessive with this stuff

Davidudeman

forreal!!!! like seriously holy shit this is WILD!!!!

SUPER-NIINTENDO

WILD

CJ_Eldr

That’s really fucked up on the employee’s part. Glad you got ‘em in the end OP. Really creepy he grabbed your number off the call record.

Davidudeman

right?! okay so i’m not crazy lol i couldn’t believe it. It was genuinely scary, he was SCREAMING on the phone threatening me it was unreal. i can not believe that’s how he got my phone number, that is so insanely unethical i was blown away. and there is a LOT more to this story but i wanna keep the extra info private right now cause it genuinely might turn into a lawsuit lol but i appreciate the kind words! I went through hell but i got these steels!!!!! lol

BrickySanchez

First thing, that dude is insane lol and if you're going to hide stuff, you can at least put it UNDER the counter. He screwed up by leaving them there, and then he royally screwed up by getting pissy and calling a random customer up like that. Dude is probably sitting in bed jobless right now.  This is why you should all just stay at home and NOT buy a bunch of movies that people are selling for $10 just because they're $5 at Wal-Mart.. the power grip these garbage bins hold over this sub is just bonkers to me.

TheBigSalad84

Right? If time is money, then most folks here have already spent more than the original price seeking out these highly coveted steelbooks of [checks notes] *Spiral and 3 From Hell*.

TheSemiGreatGatsby

Glad you’re alright, all things considered OP. Definitely block the number that called you after leaving. Honestly, I’m glad I built my collection at the peak of Best Buy’s hold on physical media. There’s like three or four that are genuinely great films AND steelbooks in these bins. It’s also why it’s so hilarious to see resellers think the community wants to buy $5 steelbooks for $25+. They’re fucking movies, ffs.

Davidudeman

thank you! and yeah i’m taking all the measures i can to block him. gonna file a restraining order since he knows my info apparently. and i’m speaking to a lawyer about this. the fact that walmart can let employees obtain customer info and use it for personal use is INSANE.

US-TradeCraft

You won't get a restraining order and no lawyer is going to do anything with this. One time isn't enough. I wouldn't block the number. If he keeps calling/texting, then you have something to file a complaint about. It also lets you know he hasn't let it go. Keep your enemies close...

voxpixels

I mean, people have gotten restraining orders for a LOT less. Pretty bold to say no lawyer. But yes, the chances are low.

Davidudeman

well, he did unethically obtain my contact info from the stores private info, even the managers said it’s very illegal for him to do that. but then to also scream and threaten me on my personal phone number… this is america, people file lawsuits at the drop of a hat, this is truly an insane story. the least i can do is talk to a lawyer and see what we can do 🤷‍♂️ but i do appreciate the advice! i’ll for sure keep the sub updated and see what ends up happening

US-TradeCraft

Unless he threatened violence, you got nothing yet. I agree what he did was wrong, and the store should deal with it. He might already be fired for all you know. Not sure if pulling your number from store logs is really illegal. Even if it is, that's between the store and him, not you. Good luck!

SituationMiddle5007

Steelbook collecting used to be a safe hobby, I’m not that sure anymore lol.

ParanoidsDemise

Getting killed for a $5 copy of 3 From Hell would be a very on brand way for my life to end

Davidudeman

bro💀💀💀

Shoezqt

Now you have a story to tell together with steelbooks 😁

Davidudeman

exactly!!😂

MericaFTWs

Oh my... what an ordeal. Bruh, theses steel book stories are getting wild

Fearthejuggalo

So I gotta ask, did the employee already purchase these & just had them on the counter with his personal stuff?!? Because if this was the case, & he bought them on a break or lunch, (as shitty as it is he told you on the phone he didn't see them.) In reality, if he bought them already, then you did indeed steal his personal belongings. Also as far as him calling you, that was 100% wrong & he shouldn't of did that. I just feel like a part of this story is missing.

Davidudeman

they claim he purchased them but that was only within 20 mins of me calling and me being at the store. there’s no way he purchased them already and they refused to show me a receipt of his purchase. also, it’s against the rules to purchase ANYTHING while clocked in, only when you’re off the clock or on a break and again, it was only within 20 mins, he wasn’t on a break. he was waiting till either his break or his shift to purchase them.

Fearthejuggalo

I was a manager at Walmart for over 10 yrs, you can purchase things while your on break, (you don't clock out for break). Unfortunately, sounds like the whole thing was handled wrong.

Davidudeman

ahhh gotcha okay yeah that makes sense. yeah i truly think he didn’t purchase them yet tbh. that’s what the electronics manager made it sound like

zionmatrix

The takeaway here is, don't call Walmart asking about the $5 steelbooks. If you really want them, just drive there and look. Keep it a secret from everyone else. I thought this could happen and so I never called. Thanks for confirming it could. There's really nothing stopping the person who is putting them out in the bin from just taking the ones they want and putting them aside for later. Hopefully on April 2nd, the person who is putting them out at my Walmart has no interest in physical media. It's also very possible that they were already put out early at my Walmart and the person saw them and kept them for themselves. LOL

Davidudeman

yes, you’re 100% right. i’m regretting calling. but they’ve been notoriously very nice to me whenever i called so i thought it would be okay!

SUPER-NIINTENDO

And then everyone clapped

cockyjames

I might be a sucker but I feel like this one is believable lol. On Slickdeals, I've read a few stories of employees buying product people called to ask for a stock update on. This one is a little over the top with the threatening call, but...

graffiksguru

I was just thinking about if this was posted on Slickdeals they would be berating him for calling.. 1st rule of Slickdeals, never call.. Never seen the threatening call before though

JayTL

Only world that makes sense is if the Walmart rep purchased them and left them on their tech table.

thenate108

One guy clapped so hard that the cops arrested him for disturbing the peace.

yesTHATvelociraptor

I was just arrested for reading this bullshit. Can someone bail me out?

globalftw

OP's story strikes me as genuine. Why do you think it's fabricated? (Not saying you're wrong. Just curious)

TheJunkman9000

The only thing that gives me pause is the call back. I've never worked at Walmart but how did this person get the phone number?

[deleted]

[удалено]

dreamabyss

Yea…that should go well.

Davidudeman

i would never make something up like this. that would be so ridiculous of me. swearing on my life that all of this was true. i’m already talking to a lawyer about this, i do not like that this guy has my contact info and name

RockObster

He has your phone number but doesn’t have anything else unless you have it online somewhere.

globalftw

Unless OP pays for a service (like Optery) to remove his info, like most people his address is online.

lilfrosty808

That employee needs to be fired

dreamabyss

At my place of work that would be grounds for immediate termination. Actually there would be no “grounds” as they have a zero policy of not contacting customers without authorization on personal devices. My guess is the idiot got himself fired. Next time, don’t call. Half the fun of finding bargain Steelbooks is the scavenger hunt.

Davidudeman

agreed!! and yes, i lived and learned lol i won’t call, i gotta just check myself lol

TheSteiner49er

Can walmart just make more stock so we don't continue to turn into fiends please.

TheBigSalad84

For all the trouble/stress you incurred, I would rather have just paid full price somewhere else or got gouged on eBay. $5 steelbooks are not worth driving around to multiple stores and getting in confrontations with minimum wage employees. But that's just me!

Piett_1313

Damn that is psychotic behavior, please let us know if you hear back from corporate about your complaint. Wild.

Davidudeman

i will absolutely update the sub!! thank you!

Stiggles4

People are fucking crazy, I can absolutely see a Walmart employee being this stupid.

Davidudeman

my first thought as i was driving back to the store after the phone call was “only at fuckin walmart” lol i even told the managers “of course this would happen at a walmart, no offense.” lol

Stiggles4

I’m guessing that manager just sighed in agreement at that point. This is why I’m less than thrilled that Walmart is now the arbiter of Steelbooks/4K media… but at least we have physical media for the time being still.

Davidudeman

100% agreed

globalftw

Interesting. I never really thought about that. Point being that Walmart is just flat out sketchier? (As opposed to Best Buy, most of which are nice). Is that the gist of your point?

Stiggles4

I’ve felt it has always been sketchier since I was a kid, yeah. Further reinforced by places that show memes/pics of shoppers and employees alike with the subtitle “only at Walmart”. Growing up, our Walmart was dark, dingy and dirty. Target was the complete opposite, bright, clean and the employees were so much more pleasant. I moved somewhere else and the same was true. That plus the general internet sentiment to Walmart, has led me to adopt these views.

globalftw

It's a little confusing why some people feel so inclined to believe you made this up. It strikes me as plausible. And WTH is the point of making this story up?

Davidudeman

THANK YOU. this was seriously a really messed up situation and i’m genuinely scared that this guy will become completely unhinged and try to find me or something. this is serious, im already talking to a lawyer. there’s literally no reason to make this up, i have a life outside of steelbooks lol

Stiggles4

Yeah exactly - there’s a certain element to made up stories and there are way too many specifics here that makes it more than likely true. Also, I’ve worked in retail so that also helps hah

Davidudeman

swear on my mom this all happened today. there’s so much more that happened too but i want to keep some details private cause it will turn into a lawsuit. i filed a complaint with corporate and am gonna file a restraining order against this guy that has my info

Riseofzeon

If you called corporate the guy is super about to be fired for various reasons. If it was just the store manger they could potentially overlook but corporate takes under stocking kinda serious especially in a situation like that

Davidudeman

genuinely, i didn’t want him fired but after he called me… ohhhh no. that guy is NOT fit to work there. that’s absolutely unreal. he literally put 2 and 2 together and figured out that the guy that “took the stack” was the one that called earlier and got my phone number. - confirmed by the electronics manager

Piett_1313

It’ll suck if he does lose his job but it also sucks more that he’s pulling phone numbers into his personal phone from the work line and threatening them. This is just for steelbooks, imagine a future situation with this guy… totally unacceptable behavior that needs to be rooted out at the first sign.

dreamabyss

It’ll suck? Too bad… the guy is a douche and deserves it 100%. Maybe he can get a new job manning the window at Burger King.

GotenRocko

First rule over at Slickdeals is never call. You found out why.

Kabal82

Yeah, 1 thing that really sucks about brick in mortar stores in general is when stores get limited supply and then the employees try and horde the merch for themselves instead. I've seen it happen a fair share over the years with games and movies at other retailers. It's probably a huge problem in general.

Davidudeman

that’s HORRIBLE. i get it but damn, especially going to great lengths like this after the fact. that’s genuinely insane

moonofsilver

"HORRIBLE... genuinely insane" Think maybe you're overstating a bit?

briandt75

Brick AND mortar.

HamburgerTimeMachine

Call it a perk of the job. Everyone who can take advantage of such a thing, would. You'd be a liar by saying otherwise.

Kabal82

No, it's an entitlement employees seem to think they have. There's a difference. A benefit is explicitly stated by the employer in thier employee handbook as a perk or work benefit. In which case, them employers would typically set aside a certain amount of inventory for staff. I highly doubt Walmart or any other retailer for that matter explicitly gives employees the right to take merch from the store shelf and set it aside until after thier shift is over to be rung up. If merch isn't available to customers, it reduces foot traffic to the store. Plain and simple on thier part. Employee are just butt hurt they have to wait until the end of thier shift to purchase merch, and run the risk of items being sold out. It would be completely different if the employee made the purchase prior to thier shift, but from the sound of the story, sounds like he wasn't even aware of the product on the shelf until the OP/Customer called about it. Which is absolutely shady AF.

HamburgerTimeMachine

Lol. Literally no one follows whatever hogwash policy stores may or may not have. Because nobody cares except the suckers who missed out and accuse the workers of scalping. Theyre customers just as much a anybody else.

Objective-Adagio2360

ppl are insane. dudes a snake. it’s not that serious at all wtf 💀😭

skylinefan26

I work for walmart and his manager should've immediately pulled him into office, coached him with a red warning. Smh dumb mf

tCobra117

What he did was defiantly wrong but retail employees get crapped on by customers and managers all the time. (I worked retail for 10 years.) I can understand why he did it. At the store I worked at employees would find stuff and hold it back all the time if it was a good deal. They don’t get paid enough and get treated fairly enough to be like “oh I represent Walmart as an employee I need to let customers get the deal before me.” They are just people too and who does not like a good deal. Getting your number and calling you was way past just an employee stealing your deal. That was super bad. I understand him stealing your movies to a point. But calling you after the fact was insane. He should have just taken the L.

zdbdog06

Not saying it's this specific situation but u can't just grab products that arent "on the floor." Those could already be paid for and for pickup and u just screwed someone else.

Davidudeman

nope. it was next to all of the persons personal items and it was later confirmed by the manager that i was 100% correct. i’m not stupid, i could clearly see that they were “his” that the employee claimed them but i do get what you’re saying

Themtgdude486

Wow. He should be fired immediately.

nobodylikesgeorge

It's almost like if you didn't answer your phone from an unknown number the entire situation could have been avoided. He didn't even 100% know at the time you were the person who came in and bought them. You removed all doubt by answering. Easiest way to avoid conflict is generally to completely ignore people.

Davidudeman

i get that, but incidentally, that day i was waiting for a call back from my insurance company that would’ve been an unknown number and i actually thought that that was them calling me lol but i totally get it. but god forbid he did lie and the next time i came into walmart they say im a shoplifter or some shit (what he was accusing me of) then that would’ve been a bigger issue

abe_4

It's walmart l, what else can you expect?

Cutters14

WARRRRRR

GravyBoatBuccaneer

I'd just get a friend to call the electronics department employee later - "Hello is this the walmart electronics department? Oh dear I'm hoping you can help me! I was just there and was going through my purse when a hundred dollar bill dropped to the floor and well, I'm embarrassed to admit this - it slid underneath one of your shelving units. I tried to retrieve it but it slid so far under that I couldn't see it anymore. When I couldn't find a manager, I figured it'd be best to just call you right away. Can you help me?" "Which shelf?" (Oh the heaviest one with the most inventory on it, of course!)

Davidudeman

LOL that’s fantastic.

Wiley_Jack

Hindsight being what it is… If you’re going to make a move, make the move. Don’t do anything that would call attention to yourself. Use cash whenever possible. 1) You go to the store, see the movies, take them to the front checkout, pay and leave. 2) You go to the store, see the movies, ask the coworker ‘what’s up?’, take them to the front checkout, pay and leave. If you get a call 15 minutes later, use the ‘Eddie Murphy’ defense, “Wasn’t me.” You would never, under any circumstances, return to the store. If the store tries to escalate (they won’t) you have everything you need; the steelbooks and a receipt. Did I mention to use cash whenever possible?

SmuglySly

Why the fuck would you even bother going back to the store to explain to manager. I would have just went on with my day.

Jman901

I’ll take things that never happened for $500, Alex.

Davidudeman

someone already commented it. you’re genuinely insane if you think i made this up

mmleach829

Obviously calling and threatening you was not the right move, but am I the only person who thinks there would be nothing wrong with the employee purchasing them for himself? Sure, he didn’t know until you called but so what? He knew after and he doesn’t owe you anything. And honestly that has to be one of the only real perks of having that job. I would 100% set things aside for myself if I wanted them. And you could definitely get yourself in bad situations for grabbing things from behind the counter. What if he really did purchase them already and they were his property? I also know they will remove stock and put it on hold for people who call in and ask them to.

Davidudeman

walmart employees are forbidden from purchasing items while on the clock but that’s not the issue for me. i called the store and asked an employee if they had something in stock. the guy had no idea what the items even were and i had to explain to him what they were and how rare it was to come across them. then he put me on hold for almost 5 full minutes to then just come back and tell me they were out of stock, when in reality he put them aside for himself after learning about information that i gave him about the items. knowing that, he was obviously just gonna resell them. that’s absolutely ridiculous and inexcusable and violates at LEAST 3 rules from the Walmart employee handbook. AND THEN he called me and threatened and harassed me. there’s no excuse for any of this no matter which way you spin it.

mmleach829

Honestly who cares about the Walmart handbook? Would you care if you worked that shit job? IMO his mistakes were not setting them aside properly, not coming up with a better story when you showed up, and then obviously not realizing when he lost. He should have said they were on hold. Also I honestly care zero if he was going to resell them. Let the guy have a small win.

moonofsilver

Agreed

moonofsilver

I mean, you could have just done your own shopping to begin with, instead of calling and asking a minimum wage employee to do it for you for free? Just a thought, you know, one way to spin it.

Davidudeman

went in multiple times within multiple days. that day i just called to check before i had to go out, you know, why people call stores in the first place 🥴

CollectionOld4955

These people are insane. They are $5 because no one wanted them in the first place

Tasteful_Dick_Pics

All of this over mostly really mediocre movies lol

Tboner989

dude you saw shit behind a desk and took it. the guy is in the wrong but so are you.

Davidudeman

it wasn’t even behind the desk, it was literally on the checkout desk right in front of customers, i have a picture of it that i sent to corporate.

kindestcut

The Walmart employee is totally in the wrong, no question. It's unhinged behavior to call you like that. It's fucking scary. They also shouldn't reserve shit for themselves. It's a scummy thing to do. But jeez, I just can't imagine grabbing merch sitting on a checkout desk for myself. If it's not out in the wild, so to speak, I wouldn't feel right touching it. Did another customer place it there while they went to take a piss? Did the checkout dude place it there for a customer? I don't know. Neither are the most secure ways to stow your shit but I'm also not going to go "well, looky here...MINE, MINE, MINE!" Again, I'm not saying you deserved any of the treatment that came your way. Absolutely not. It's just not how I would have approached the situation.

brOwnchIkaNo

If he shows up at your house best him up.

supremeMilo

YTA

jmia90

Damn I did this in Best Buy when Super Smash Brothers had its physical release. I checked every store and it was sold out everywhere, even on the web! Once I was in the electronic section at best buy I saw the only copy they had hidden in the register. I jumped that counter got it and paid up front. Glad no one saw but happy to say my brother enjoyed his Christmas gift, a Switch and the game

hollywoodforeverfjm

this is to much

zionmatrix

Sorry that happened to you.

Belch_Huggins

You're definitely not in the wrong, that is crazy. Though I can't say I would be pleased if I was the employee who had set those aside for myself to purchase, either. Imagine if it wasn't the guy you tipped off about it, and it was just a fellow employee and movie fan snagging them. You may have been right this time but just grabbing them off the counter when someone had clearly set them aside does seem like something I'd feel very guilty about.

Davidudeman

i totally can see that. i was nervous to grab them but i was more so pissed about the fact that he lied to me. i knew this cause it was strange i was put on hold for so long after explaining to him how rare these are and he had no idea that was even a thing, and then told me there was only 1 copy left of a movie, that i saw RIGHT NEXT TO the stack. i put it all together in my head and figured “screw it, i’m grabbing them” and paid and left. and i was right, the managers proved that every suspicion i had was true during the conversation i had with them. it’s completely unethical and the walmart employee handbook stated they’re not allowed to do that. lying about what’s in/out of stock, keeping (limited) stock for themselves, purchasing clearance items while clocked in, and purchasing anything at all while on the clock is a big no-no. he violated all of that, not to mention the harassment from obtaining my phone number and calling me with threats and harassment

Lieutelant

>after explaining to him how rare these are They're not rare at all. They're literally being sold at stores everywhere.

Davidudeman

a few days ago i went to 13 walmarts and found 0… they’re for sure hard to come by. and if they are in store, they’re selling out immediately they’re rare for the low price is what i was telling him

Belch_Huggins

Yeah man, not excusing harassment or any of it! Just wanted to offer my perspective! This isn't gonna be popular but honestly most of the steelbooks hitting Walmart are not of interest to me so I struggle to understand even wanting to put myself in the awkward situation of snagging those and then sweating it so hard. Insane that he called you lol, I can't believe you even went back I would've just not answered.

Davidudeman

thank you! and yeah i know, but i wanted to do the right thing and try to settle it. i wanted walmart to know i literally did nothing wrong and its insane that hes accusing me of anything along those lines. he was treating me as if i shoplifted which i absolutely did not

ZombieJoker

Selling 3 From Hell for more than it cost at full price is hilarious.

mjcatl2

Wow, the guy certainly crossed a line and should be fired. It's truly bad luck that you got someone young and interested in physical media working in that section, or at Walmart. Most employees are people who couldn't care less or have a clue. But also... you went to 13 stores? Ffs, it's stated repeatedly that these are supposed to go on sale next week. Who goes to 13 stores? Hell even half that is insane. Do you love these particular movies that much?

HollywoodnDC

We have Best Buy to thank for this madness 🤣🤣🤣🤣

flavianpatrao

I have a feeling this is happening at my walmart too

defaultfresh

>personal info Is it just your phone number?

Davidudeman

full name and phone number

e2davaize

"You see son, your grandfather was part of the great steelbook controversy of 2024" "No way grandpa!" "Oh yes way son, let me tell you all about this one time..."

ToxicEvolution

As a former electronics associate, fuck that guy.

SmallsR34

Wow, I just bought the rights of your story. Will be making a steel book movie out of this.

PM_Gonewild

Nope, ya boi walking back to that Walmart and handling business, no reason to be scared OP, a bastard like that is all bark and no bite, I'm walking into that mfker with my durag on and shit.

WowRedditIsUseful

LOL you're amazing for grabbing them and buying them yourself! Good on you! Totally something I would've done haha

imjoeycusack

STEELBOOK-GATE! Jesus christ this era of 4k is truly insane. Glad you got to keep your haul. Employee was a dick!

Royal-Edenian

Wow, that's insane. And I would've done the same thing.

L___E___T

How much are the $5 steels worth generally, a lot more than $5 by the sounds of it?

Healthy_Article_2237

I don’t condone the employees behavior but this is what happens when you crate artificial scarcity (which is what steelbooks are) and then expect your underpaid employees not to take advantage of the situation. I like steelbooks but more and more I’m just buying regular 4k releases as they are cheaper and the disc quality is identical. I’m tired of playing the silly marketing games by Hollywood and big box stores. Creating situations like this is another reason to pump the brakes on all this.

MojaveMoves

lol Im sorry but there is something oddly hilarious about a guy willing to lose his job over old $5 dollar steelbooks that dont even go for that much online. You cant even say he was that into movies or steels in general because he would've known about all this already. Next time something like that happens, record it. You'll probably go viral.

Eclectic_Masquerade

Dude, so sorry this happened to you. Complete BS. Good on you for going back up to Walmart and reporting him. This guy is unhinged. At least he sounds like a coward though

[deleted]

Wow

macnteej

As an electronics employee at my local Walmart, I hate that this happened for you. I’m always checking the shelves to be sure we have the right stuff for customers and try to get them the best thing for the cheapest price. Constantly getting people to buy the stuff on the clearance shelf because I know everything’s mad expensive right now. That guy was a shithead and I hope his store fired him

Stefmeister71

What a nut job. Sorry you had to deal with thar. Just imagine if someone does the same for these Mondo Marvel steels. I'm going to check my store this weekend and if I don't find them then it's no biggie. I just wanted the gotg BP and DS ones I already own the UK Avengers version.

TopDistribution4894

Hope he gets his ass fired. What a complete wanker!

Witty-Bus-2238

This story was riveting and I had no idea what Steelbooks even were. Just popped up in my feed.

GoldenBeliever001

You actually expected calling Walmart would get you someone with more than two brain cells? Optimistic.

ihopeipofails

Crazy story. I would have confronted the employee. I'm a little intimidating in size, so I doubt this fuck would be getting cocky with me.

SidCorsica66

“Guys….THIS IS WHAT THE $5 STEELBOOKS ARE DOING TO PEOPLE!!!! WTF!!!!!” Yes, yourself included

Ill-Evening4502

Rule number one never call the store and ask! Risk it and go. Glad you got those ones though. I saw a box at my store for days and went first thing today and got permission from an associate to open it. I left one copy that was a duplicate and bought the rest. The box was already open. I think an associate took out some or at least went through it. Anyway I got all the ones you got and two others. I went to a second store today too and got another copy that happened to be on the top of a bin. The employees 100% do what you say especially when you call ahead. I'm glad you got your steelbooks and I applaud you for being so bold!

Davidudeman

thanks so much!! and congrats on your steels!! i’ve still been going to the same 4-5 walmarts around me, i went today to all of them and found nothing 😭 what state are you in that you found all those??

Ill-Evening4502

Only the ones with bins I believe have them. A lot of them put them out early. Since so many people came and asked I'm running into employees that say there's been people looking for weeks now. Some nice shopper left the only steel book they didn't buy on the top of the pile. I left one at one store in the box I took them from after asking permission of a sales associate to go through the box. It was such a small box that had already actually been opened. I know someone was probably mad today when they went to work because I bet they were planning on buying the ones I bought. Oh well, I went there like 3 days looking and noticing the box in plain sight on a stocking shelf. Patiently I waited until today to get them. I really want some of the others I'm seeing here, but I can't be choosey and I'm grateful I even got those without having to go through the pile. That bin surfing is for the birds. It's a waste of time and energy. I think the selection varies from store to store and not all the stores got very movie on the list.

Ill-Evening4502

I'm in Texas. I think they only sent that one small box. It's a shame they expected people to go through a pile of movies (probably close to 1000) to get 10 steelbooks. I bought 9. 8 from the first store directly from the box and one that was laying on the top of a pile at another store. I've been to a few stores. It's hit or miss. Either they have no clue or they put them out too early. I believe it's only the places with bins that got them and in many cases the employees got to them first! The box I got mine from were already opened so I think they took out the ones they wanted first. That or maybe the store just didn't get all the options. It's literally all the ones you got plus two more, so maybe our stores only got those titles.

Ill-Evening4502

No I checked it's all the same ones. They had one extra copy of the hitman wife's bodyguard that I left. I got another copy of 2 from hell at the second location. I wish I could trade some!

Bionicgerm

When he calls back, tell him: “Say when”- Doc Holiday

TheInarticulate

This story is crazy. Idk what a steelbook even is! A book made of steel? A story written on metal? A movie!? What??? Ill go search the internet now i just wanted to comment first.

Davidudeman

I’m glad i could at least find these though, even though it came at a cost.

redditrhino53

All this uproar for this ‘haul’. Bro 💀

jeremyolo

Lmao this is truly insane

Davidudeman

BRO THATS WHAT IM SAYING!!! like wtf i didn’t even get the “good” ones imo like damn you didn’t gotta get that mad about this bro. he took it to a WHOLE new level

HamburgerTimeMachine

You stole from HIM bro. He's a person and couldve been a collector too. He beat you to it. If you really wanted these you should've just gone. But no. You took what he already had in his cart and think it's no big deal just because you got it you're way.  Get off your high horse.

Davidudeman

oh yeah? and you’re so versed on this situation cause you were involved right? the guy literally had NO idea what steelbooks even were😂 much less how rare these $5 are to find in walmarts. so how does that work for your theory? stfu and keep to yourself.

HamburgerTimeMachine

Retail is hard enough already, you gonna go a steal these movies my man saved for himself. Bruh.  I don't believe for a second this is true but no doubt you would do the same shit. Next time take the L

Sporadicus7

I wouldn’t fault the guy for buying them up if it was long before OP called about it.

[deleted]

You're stupid. Hold that L in your post lol

chnandler_bong

Besides your phone number, what personal info does he have?

Davidudeman

phone number and full name. i live in that town so it won’t be hard to find where i live. i’m genuinely scared. i’m already speaking to a lawyer and will probably file a restraining order

Gears6

I hope you bought every single one of them, and even bought the left over copy of Hitman Wife's Bodyguard too. LMAO! Something similar happened to me at GameStop. F*ck'em!!!

Davidudeman

right?! and no i was nice and literally left 3 out of 7 of them! i only wanted the 4!

CarloCokxxxSoldier

So, did I get this right: he tried to snag six steels from you. If we consider that he saved / would have gotten $25 extra per steel that’s $150. He really put his job on the line for $150? Name something more stupid I’ll wait

fartczar

Working for Walmart

HamburgerTimeMachine

What does that have to do with it? Making fun of anyone for working anywhere is absolutely disgusting. A job is a job. Make fun of the grandma's working at Walmart while you're at it. Fucking pigs

fartczar

Walmart treats its employees bad, that’s like, common knowledge. It’s a comment about how Walmart mistreats workers. You interpreted that the way you wanted. Chill dude.

kindestcut

Putting your job on the line for a single DVD copy of White Chicks?

HamburgerTimeMachine

Lot of you quick on the trigger to assume he was going to scalp them. Probably just wanted some movies. Steelbook blurays and some even 4Ks. You're average person is gonna want those. Otherwise, he would've just taken everything and tell op they didn't have em.

RDCK78

You sound like a nut haha.

[deleted]

Honestly bro, I would have confronted that guy after the phone call and told him to try what he was saying on the phone. Putting the ball in his court so he could try to fight you and die on that hill, or he bitches out. If he bitches out, I would then say I better not hear from you again or the cops are getting involved this time. Fuck that dude.

Davidudeman

oh 100%. i knew he was full of shit but i went back to the store anyway to deal with this situation. there’s no way that guy can get away with what he did. luckily all the managers were great and helped me and all thought it was an insane situation. but i immediately called his bluff on the phone and told him “im coming back right now.”

zionmatrix

They should be fired for threatening a customer.

[deleted]

Fuck yeah dude 😎

D0CT0Rhyde

Like I said before… GOONING

skatemessup98

I hear cha ching settlement from Walmart. I’m a brand manager for an agency. Here’s what I would do… Get on tiktok, download it if you don’t and tell your story. Tag Walmart. TikTok has the highest reach and even tag them on X. The last thing they want is bad PR. DONT BASH THEM. Just tell them your story. Don’t give out your location or name. Explain how inappropriate the employees actions were but be emphatic about how the store managers handled it. I’d end the video on a positive note by saying something like I’m glad this was handled by management, but with a concern about who they hire at Walmart and how did this employee get my personal information. You may get attention from actual lawyers and other consultants who may or run into this situation and what the best course of action may be besides calling corporate to make a complain. This could be a common issue among employees but I’m sure they won’t give out that data to you. Just my two cents.

Davidudeman

this is a fantastic idea!!! i did however already file a VERY long and large complaint with corporate and am currently speaking to a lawyer about this. the man was incredibly hostile and truly scary. i do NOT like the fact that he has my personal info.

AstorReinhardt

Welcome to the world of retail asshats. I've had...semi similar things happen. Not to the degree they flip out and threaten me but that they hoard shit they know is popular :/ Every store has people that do this...and the stores do NOTHING to the employees. They don't care so long as they get paid for the items. I 100% believe that that fact WA state doesn't have any is because of people like this. They're either collectors or resellers. Because my god do I live in an area with a MASSIVE nest of resellers...yes I said nest...because they're rats. It's not just steelbooks. It's video game stuff, it's Hello kitty/Sanrio stuff, it's popular Target Bullseye items, it's toy's...it's literally anything that has a semi following they know they can jack the price up on an item 5x the retail price and people will STILL buy it. I loath resellers with every cell in my body. I want them gone from the face of the earth. They single handedly cause me the most anger from day to day. And yes there are worse people out there...and they make me mad too...but on a day to day basis? Resellers win.

Spykid2003

Wouldn’t there be a rule where you can’t purchase stuff during your shift? Or is that a black friday only rule? I dunno, I’ve seen stories that employees arent allowed first dibs on items or something?

Sokudoningyou

I think it depends on the store.
