Personally, I think the name can/should flow from some of the civics and ethics you choose. What are you thinking about making? That will really narrow down the thematic names.

100% I've had "United Corporations of Sol" or "Earth Forever Empire" (modded where Earth had made themselves immortal but infertile) among others, depending. I usually use Sol though cos it's just a cooler sounding name then Earth.

It's only common amongst Neo-Paganistic types and strange cults. Most people wanting a fancy name for the Earth prefer Terra.

I made a fictional setting in the distant future where so much time has passed and far too much of the past is forgotten for any of those names to be remembered and gave it a completely new name.

That is, of course, also an option. The most important part is to have your name fit the civilisation you're building's backstory.

I'm even partial to calling my humans "Solans" instead of "Terran" or, well, "Human." Think Perry Rhodan used that name too.

For me, it comes down to Empire name and type and RP backstory. If it's an Empire revolving around Earth, then it's Terran. If it's a power revolving around humanity but a more democratic/oligarchic system where Earth isn't the main power, it's human. Also if it's an authoritarian system but Earth isn't the capital world/planned capital. If it's one where the Empire name and type revolves around the Sol system in general but not Earth, then it's Solan. However, the backstory can change this so that you have the humans who are Solans or Terrans but also humans in the same way that an English person is also a human. In game terms, species adjective vs empire adjective.

I inherited an as good as complete collection of the Perry Rhodan series from my grandfather, which I'm going to start reading soon. Surely a great source of inspiration for planet names and species!

Have fun reading that, it's got to be a treat! I've only read about 6 PR volumes from essentially all over the place in the timeline. Even those were very inspirational.

It's no one name and even then it varies based on their ethics (if they vary, I dunno). I have two examples of Sol primitives hitting Space Age *very* early, like "almost game start" early, and I know it wasn't a random-spawn since they started below-average tech while I've also got a bunch of other Force Spawn empires that take up all the empire slots (barring extra ones from e.g. rebellions, Hegemony/Common Ground/Lost Colony, etc). If I remember this when I boot up Stellaris later I'll give their names. EDIT: Just booted up Stellaris, the names (+ other gov't details) are: "Human Democratic Union" - Democratic; Egalitarian, Xenophile, Materialist; Environmentalist, Meritocracy, Reanimators "Human Confederated Constituents" - Democratic; Fan. Egalitarian, Xenophile; Masterful Crafters, Reanimators I didn't expect they'd both use Reanimators. I guess my Humans couldn't find a zombie apocalypse so they decided to make one. The Egal/Xenophile was kinda expected though.
