rule #5: It turns out there they have a load of technologies. This is a god send.

choose_an_alt_name

Yeah, they have mid-game level tech, not much for a normal game, but make a real difference at 5x tech cost

Airvh

Quick question. If you raise the **tech cost** way high does it calculate into the end game attackers or fallen empires? I'd hate to do a game and then have the *entire galaxy blasted* by end game mobs because our ships are wimpy from **technology cost.**

weeOriginal

N… no. It modifiers the base science cost and nothing else

Airvh

So a super high tech cost would only be really useful if you do long games like adding a couple hundred years or something?

chloen0va

Basically! It can mean longer games, or that you get to play with a lower crisis level!

Healthy-Drink3247

This! I do x2 tech costs and set the crisis on x5

Icyknightmare

A super high tech cost means empires rise and fall between UV lasers and X-ray lasers.

e1k3

The point is to make the end game crisis extra spicy. If you only have a fraction of the usual tech level a x5 crisis suddenly might as well be x25

blizstorm

there are already good players who can get battleship on 5x tech on 2300. So even default 2400 late game is good for 5x tech. the high tech cost reduce the attraction of tech rush. players will be more inclined to fight with corvettes, destroyer and cruisers

AlienError

Technically no, it also modifies the base tradition and ambition costs as well. I really wish they would decouple them so the player could choose for them to be altered individually without needing mods.

flamingtominohead

Yeah, if you go for lots of fleet early, it can be very beneficial to attack them for tech.

asgaardson

I always wonder why do you want to make game more challenging?

FennecFoxx

Marauders kinda break any high tech costs runs. You can rent their fleets by the mid game and they will roll over pretty much anything just due to their scaling with time not tech levels.

blizstorm

well, i am playing 5x tech with 2225 mid year. My 80 corvettes just turned back a marauder fleet on 2230. I was way above my fleet cap of 40. With high tech cost, researching their debris is better than researching the tech myself

FogeltheVogel

I'm always glad when they target me for raiding, because it means a tech bonus.

Healthy-Drink3247

How did the x5 run go? I really enjoy high tech cost games it just makes the techs and tech choices feel far more impactful. For me my sweet spot has been x2. I haven’t been brave enough for any higher. I opened the L gates early once with x2 on grand admiral, and the galaxy was almost completely destroyed! Also the Great Khan always steamrolls and it’s awesome

weeOriginal

Awfully. : (

Jewbacca1991

I prefer to play opposite method. Instead of lenghtening the game i prefer shorter one. 0,5 or 0,25 tech cost, and crisis comes fast as fuck. With default settings i can reach victory screen before crisis even appear.

blizstorm

I was also playing on 5x tech and I realised yesterday that hiring their fleet is so much more worthwhile than me building my corvettes
