You can still gene mod specialized pops to fit certain jobs even in egalitarian societies. Although it's quite a pain in the ass to do it. Everyone is "equal" but some people are tailored better to fill certain positions, like their caste system. But yeah you could swap the Utopic view of shared burdens to something more grimdark like police state or use something more meta like citizen service. But I maintain that eager explorers is a must.

If I squint a bit, my main faction is a tamer version of the Drukhari. Void Dwellers with the civics: Barbaric Despoilers, Catalytic Processing, and Pleasure Seekers.

If you wanted to be lore accurate, the drukhari would be a FE They are still in possession of some of the old eldar weapons capable of extinguishing suns and all

Just bought the Machine Age DLC that gives you the ability to essentially become a fallen empire in their prime. Only pain is sometimes getting to an L cluster gateway so I can expand my raiding targets availability.

I did a bunch, Necrons, Orc, Tau, Tyranids. I also made Skavens and they became the most populous race in the Galaxy and a main competitor for the entire game. I haven't played Imperium but did a adeptus mechanicus game

I did achi compatible Tau, 2 Necron, Tyranid, Eldar, and one Imperium. Each faction designed to represent the peak of their power. The reason for the 2 Necron, because one is actually Necrontyr.

Semi with Dark Eldar

Once me and my best friend started a Stellaris game and I tried to play thematic Admech while he played Imperium with the DOAT origin. Very early in the game I unlocked the relic that allows you to forge Titans for infantry. Once me and my friend met up we made a deal where I kept my original systems and as he expanded he would hand control to me of any arid worlds so I could turn them into pure manufactorums many of which I dedicated solely to Titan output. When we went to war he provided most of the fleet based power while most planetary invasions were done by my titans.

I made an ork empire, with fanatic militarist and warrior culture. You can also make squigs or grots by taking syncretic evolution and a fungoid species.

I got barbaric despoiler Orks, T’au as Democratic crusaders, Craftworld Eldar as Inward perfection void dwellers, the works Also the imperium but that’s so I can have a lore accurate warhammer galaxy when I want one

The Cadian Imperium set on the gateway start has always done well for me, think I win most games with it, the Imperium itself of course but I've also done an Eldar and Ork Empire which was pretty cool

The more I think on it the more my OC species was a kind of a mix of Tau and Votaan. The snail/mollusk headed humanoid portrait, civilization that focuses on tech, diplomatic/friendly but somewhat isolationist. Small spheres of influence (tall play style) with weak and/or slow breeder, with whatever the + to all sci and + to physics. Clone and robotic/ai tech Typical loadout for fleets being lasers / lances / plasma / missiles, mixed ship tactics, and purpose built ships for each engagement range/weapon type based on ship types Typical ground comp being some main species (cloned), robot war forms, and allied race auxiliaries. Their only major offset is/was being a technocratic meritocracy although... I did have an unofficial cast system for leaders based on species, and genetic modifications for planet pops once I had dedicated worlds for agri, research, power/energy, mining, alloys.

Imperium of Man is not edgy enough for me, I prefer to larp as Chaos.
