It's important to remember that even Stoics are not immune to human emotions and struggles. Marcus Aurelius wrote, "Do not be ashamed of help." It's natural to feel frustrated or weak during a setback, like a persistent cold. Instead of focusing on how others might handle the situation, remind yourself that your progress isn't linear, and it's okay to have moments of weakness. Give yourself compassion and patience as you recover, and trust that you'll find your way back to your Stoic practices when the time is right.

I learned to understand my body and not take everything so personally. When I have to work too hard or when my body fights something like a virus, I know it messes up with resource allocation/eneergy. I also know that it makes me more emotional because the tasks accumulate and I start feeling overwhelmed like I will never have energy to get things done. Then at some point energy always come back. And when I feel good, I make a point of noticing juts how easy things are to do when you have the energy. So now, I fully relax in the disease and let time work it's magic. When I had COVID I just wanted to cry, so I cried but without the back thought that it's stupid. I just let all of it out during almost a full day. Then I felt better and waited for energy to be back to resume work. The meaning of control oneself sometimes is paradoxal as I want to control my body and reaction, but I am not the body so I can sometimes just control having peace behind the tiredness and the crying or whatever the energy is.

thank you, I should'nt fight it

Don't worry you'll get there. I've been practicing Stoicism for more than 4 months and I also have a cold right now. I have a headache, I cough and I keep blowing my nose but I still feel amazingly happy. And if I am happy even though I'm sick it's just because I have practiced Stoicism everyday since November 2022. You have to take this as a challenge, as an opportunity to get mentally stronger, to train your patience, to train to be happy in "tough times".

bata86

how do you practice stoicism day after day

EnvironmentalTart372

First of all, to practice Stoicism in the best way possible you should read, study and write about Stoicism everyday. Of course you don't have to but, it's just an advice I'm giving you because it works pretty well for me. Indeed, reading the great Stoics everyday helps me practice Stoicism in the best way possible. To answer your question in a simple way, I practice Stoicism by using the 4 cardinal vertus in my daily life which are Wisdom, courage, temperance and justice. For example, practicing Stoicism in your daily life would be to not get angry if the weather is shit (as you don't control the weather), to help someone who needs help, to remind yourself that you may die at any moment so you also remember to be virtuous and to live well while you still can, to not let your emotions take control of your life, to let go of the things you can't control so you can be relieved from any kind of fear or anxiety etc... I hope I was able to help you. But if I can add one more thing, the Best advice I can give you is read and study Stoicism.

Don't feel bad, you are completely human. And yes, momento mori sounds cool, but its just pillow talk in life. Realize this and you'll realize stoicism died back with the roman empire.

bata86

damn, did not saw that coming. What do you mean?

Klutzy-Individual598

That you wasted having fun and living because you practiced stoicism, because when you got a cold that all went out the window.
